Welcome to the discussion thread! We have much to discuss, so let's get started. Hop in and introduce yourselves (players, not characters) and let's talk a little about how this thing gets started. The introductory scenario is a little unorthodox, but I hope it will take us in an interesting direction.

Sir Constantine Godalming |

I am usually known as Kenderkin here on the boards, but my actual name is Freddy.
I like the redeemer archetype for the half-orc paladin...I like that I can opt out of the detect evil (crutch).
This opens more opportunities for role-playing and not just smiting everything that detects as evil.
I could see myself or my parents (possibly both) encountering Takka of the Toad near the quarry which is 10 miles out of town. (Did you want to background this or maybe role-play it through?)
The other question is of timing, how long can we have known each other?

Douglas Muir 406 |
Second, there are a LOT of NPCs out there, and you may have connections to some of them. In the beginning scenario, all of you PCs are members of two squads that are training on the edge of the Worldwound. You've been in your squads for a while, long enough that you may particularly have connections to NPCs there. Here are the squad assignments (PCs in bold):
>>>RED TEAM
Sergeant Kir -- Kir is a handsome young man who is a worrier and a perfectionist. He comes from Andoran originally. This is his first time out as a team leader, and he's been painfully earnest in his determination to do everything right.
Lance-Corporal Benno -- A halfling, and the lover of Nurrah (see below). He doesn't often come out on scouting missions any more, but he's coming along this time to help Sergeant Kir. You know the stereotypical halfling who's a little plump, always merry and also an amazing cook? That's Lance-Corporal Benno.
Laurine -- Laurine, a half-elven women, is drop-dead gorgeous but so shy she doesn't seem aware of it. She commands a number of small, useful magics. It's a bit difficult to get to know her. She wears a holy symbol of Desna and seems a bit lost sometimes.
Anycek -- A human woman who wears green and carries a bow. Anycek seems rather more competent than the rest of you: she's only in training because she just arrived in Kenabres and joined the Crusade. She seems smart, practical and friendly.
Balek Nine-Fingered, male human Cleric of Erastil
Haruka Shiraboshi -- The two easterners have been split up for training purposes.
.
.
.
>>>BLUE TEAM
Corporal Nurrah -- A halfling, Corporal Nurrah is kindly and competent. She has scouted the edges of the Worldwound many times.
Lance-Corporal Cherano -- Dontrimelius "Don" Cherano is a Varisian who was enslaved in Cheliax for several years before escaping. He came to the Worldwound on a whim and then (to his great surprise) converted to the worship of Sarenrae on the spot. Cheerful and talkative, he claims to have been a Sczarni back home in Varisia. Certainly it is a bad idea to play cards with Lance-Corporal Cherano.
Torg, son of Torg -- A Kellid tribesman who has somehow ended up on the wrong side of the Worldwound. Torg isn't stupid, but he's still rather naive about civilization. He hates demons a lot, though -- they did something horrible to his tribe. He won't talk about it, but he shakes with anger.
Sir Constantine Godalming -- Kindly Nurrah is a bit more demanding of Sir Constantine, as paladins are held to a higher standard.
Kyami, female kitsune Bard
Takka of the Toad, kobold cavalier. -- "Now I've seen everything."

Douglas Muir 406 |
See all those NPCs? Pick none, one, or two. (You don't have to pick any -- zero is an option.)
Then decide what your relationship to that NPC is. Possibilities include friend, best friend, rival (friendly), rival (not so friendly), lover (casual), lover (serious), inexplicable dislike, or anything else you can think of.
Again, this part is OPTIONAL. You can completely ignore the NPCs.

Douglas Muir 406 |
I am usually known as Kenderkin here on the boards, but my actual name is Freddy.
Welcome aboard!
I could see myself or my parents (possibly both) encountering Takka of the Toad near the quarry which is 10 miles out of town. (Did you want to background this or maybe role-play it through?)The other question is of timing, how long can we have known each other?
If two PCs want to role-play out a meeting or establish a relationship, I am totally fine with that. Make sure the other player is good with it, though -- it's not canon unless you both agree.
You've known each other anywhere between "a few weeks" and as long as you care to say.

Takka of the Toad |

I could see myself or my parents (possibly both) encountering Takka of the Toad near the quarry which is 10 miles out of town. (Did you want to background this or maybe role-play it through?)
I was gonna say something similar. Takka knows that his appearance, between his toad and himself, can be both worrying and underwhelming, so having somebody to vouch for him that's native to Kenabres would be helpful. I'm also pretty chill with how my characters interact with others. If folks want to include Takka in any of their recent histories, I'm good with it! Takka is genuinely friendly and tries very hard to not frighten others, so he gets along with anyone who's willing to give him a chance.
Also, as a side note, I think it would be hilarious if Takka kept trying to prove to Kyami that he's the great hero she's looking for. I can just imagine her returning home and going "I found the great hero! He's a tiny lizard on the back of a big slimy saber-toothed toad!"

Leira |

First of all thanks for the opportunity with this AP :)
I would like for Kyami to have already established some relation with someone. The eastern idea pointed out by Douglas will probably work for me. I will go and check all the characters to have a clear idea of how they are.
As a player, I get my first contact with D&D in the middle-late 90s but never played for very long or very seriously in any campaign due to lack of interest in my area. Then in the 2000s I was co-designer and creator of one Spanish MUD and left the pen and paper during that decade. Since 3 years ago I have returned with much more strength. I have directed 2 campaigns and played in another 2, and I am an active PFS GM and player in my area.
As about PbP, I tried out during last summer and I started to enjoy more and more the format. I have gone through a bunch of PFS scenarios and directed another few. The longer games I am on are a RotRL and a Temple of Evil which are going pretty good I think.
I post everyday at morning during breakfast and then again at the evening. Because I work in front of the computer, I usually also feed the forum with a bunch of more posts if nothing urgent is going on.
I hope to have fun with you all here and make the game enjoyable and advancing at a good pace so we can complete some year ;)
About NPCs:

Douglas Muir 406 |
But wait! There's more! -- Here are a few NPCs and organizations that you may or may not have a relationship to or an opinion of. As above, these are OPTIONAL.
Lord Hulrun -- Aged but still vigorous, Lord Hulrun is a senior Inquisitor and also the military commander of Kenabres. He played a major role in the inquisitions that were such a huge part of the last Crusade. He's a controversial character; some say he went much too far, damaging the cause of righteousness and condemning the innocent, while others say his rigor is the only reason Mendev yet survives.
Eagle Watch -- The Eagle Watch was deliberately created as a kinder, gentler alternative to the perceived excesses of the Inquisition. Knights of the Eagle Watch tend to emphasize Good over Law.
Irabeth Tirabade -- A half-orc paladin who was appointed commander of the Eagle Watch a few months ago. Supporters say that putting a half-orc in charge showed a new commitment to openness and tolerance; critics have been known to mutter terms like "freak show". There are a number of rumors about Irabeth, good and bad.
Andoran -- Crusaders come from all over Avistan and even beyond, but after Mendev itself, the Home of Freedom has sent more recruits to the Worldwound than anyone else.
Cheliax -- The Devil Nation's contingent in Mendev is almost as big as Andoran's, and much better organized. It includes a large number of Hellknights. Many despise the Chelish as torturers (true), slavers (also true), devil-worshippers (totally true) and perverts (umm... depends?). It's unthinkable for paladins to ally with willing tools of evil, so the official term for the military organization that defends Mendev is "The Allied And Associated Powers". -- Note that not all Chelish are Lawful Evil, though it's usually the way to bet.
Riftwardens -- Something something wizards, something about the Wardstones? The Riftwardens are pretty secretive, but it's conceivable you might know one of them somehow.

Douglas Muir 406 |
About NPCs:
Nurrah - friend
You and Nurrah are friends. She is earthy and generous and fun. She has a fund of stories about scouting around and even into the Worldwound, although sometimes she will suddenly grow sad and change the subject. She refers to Lance-Corporal Benno as her husband, although as far as you can tell they've never formalized the relationship.
Sargeant Kir - I don't know if I can pick from another team, but he seems like the kind Kyami can easily admire and even get in love
You can have relationships with people from another team, and Sergeant Kir is indeed a likable person -- he's a worrier, but underneath that perfectionist exterior you can tell there is a rather sensitive soul. Unfortunately, he is not romantically available. Any advances are met with a firm rebuff. If a reason is required, it's because he's a superior officer. (You'd need a Sense Motive roll to know if that's the real reason why.)

Leira |

One question about my appearance.
I would like at the beginning the true nature of Kyomi to be hidden. She will show to the world just as a human. Some of the party companions might now this fact, and all of them will surely know about it soon enough.
I would be glad if you can tell me if that works in the scenario/path context. Will be easy to hide that in the Crusade?
Similarly, what do you think about Kyami going around the world as a man? Is it providing you better material or just complicating things? I can easily explain that because she feels to be taken more seriously that way, or just because it is 'fun' to mislead and surprise potential lovers.
That would explain not approaching to the Sargent yet.
I have send a PM to Haruka with some ideas about our shared origin.

Douglas Muir 406 |
I think that you're definitely traveling as human. However, kitsune don't gender-bend (well, maybe they do, but it's not the default): "A kitsune can assume the appearance of a specific single human form of the same sex. The kitsune always takes this specific form when she uses this ability." So, you'd be a female human, and always the same female human.
(IMS it's canon somewhere that both the human and fox forms are equal; neither is the "real" kitsune.)

Haruka Shiraboshi |

@Kyami: I would suggest Haruka and Kyami being good frinds, that met on the road.
@Douglas: Kir friend(non romantic)
I am a PbP Player since about 2 month :) never Played "real" Dnd/Pathfinder before, just some of the DnD games(temple of elmental evil, Neverwinter Nights 1/2)

Judge Tohram Quasangi |

In the dark shadows of the ornately built structure that serves as the headquarters of the Cheliax troops, you see a tall pale skinned man standing and watching. You feel as though your every move can be seen by him. Just looking at him makes you shudder. You do not know who or what he may be, but your every urge makes you want to run and to never have to look at him again, let alone have to interact with the frightful man? Creature?

Bref |

Didn't you leave the remnants of your meal...here? Why are there chew marks all over the wooden leg of the chair? Did something just brush your leg? Is that a chef hat bobbing up and down passing through the crowd?

Douglas Muir 406 |

@Douglas: Kir friend(non romantic)
As noted, Sergeant Kir is a likable (if somewhat nervous and perfectionist) young man. He's also very handsome, if that matters. A bit on the slender side, but very fit.

Welcome aboard. If you have any questions about PBP, feel free to post them.

Takka of the Toad |

Okay, had some time to ponder a bit.
I think Takka would gravitate to largely sociable and friendly folks, so I imagine he'd be at least on friendly (if perhaps rival terms) with Cherano and Benno (not sure what types they are, but I like to imagine Takka holds them as role models to being the knight he aspires to be, so he tests himself against them to sharpen his skills).
I definitely know Takka would be interested in joining or aiding the Eagle Watch, and perhaps getting onto speaking terms with Irabeth. He likes that they're about doing good over keeping the law (that sort of mindset is what relegated him to handling slurks back in his tribe). He'd admire that the Watch put a half-orc in charge, which tells him that no matter your race or background, you can still act as a symbol of good. Actually, between Sir Constantine and Irabeth, he might start to wonder if perhaps the 'outcast' races might be the ones who truly understand justice; having to suffer scorn and ridicule makes them grasp the consequences of not showing kindness to others.

The Judge kicks Bref.
Get back to your ghost home goblin. We killed you for a reason, now stay dead.
Balek Nine-fingered |

Balek is definitely both a rival (in archery) and (shyly) a romantic interest with Anycek. He probably has no idea how to approach her -- she doesn't fit in any of the categories he's used to. Since she's new to the squad, neither aspect of the relationship is likely to be very developed yet.
Balek has tried to take Torg under his wing and guide him a bit -- he probably sees Torg as (a) someone to guide through the minefield that is the Kellid/Mendevian relationship, (b) a drinking buddy, and (c) someone who is what the Sarkoran side of his ancestry might have looked like before the Worldwound opened. Balek's aware enough not to trip over any obvious trigger issues here, but I don't know if Torg is the sort to appreciate any of these approaches. It's hard to be son and brother and father figures all at the same time...
Still thinking about everyone else, but Balek definitely hates Lord Hulrun and isn't too fond of anyone (especially Andorans) who think they can come in and run everything the way they see fit and ignore all the realities already here. But, just as important, anyone who's really willing to fight demons gets a lot of leeway. (Erastil is a very practical god....)
It is possible that this combination of attitudes may be why Balek got assigned to a squad of mostly non-locals.

If you're interested in moving things along, you can roll a Cha check. No pressure.

Leira |

I have finally reviewed all our characters and here are the notes I want to expose about each of us and the whole as a group. I have been comparing possible links between the characters.
Origin:
Kenabres (3): Constantine, Takka, Balek
Tian Xia (2): Kyami, Haruka
It seems origin is probably a very good link for everybody. There are two clear groups, locals and orientals.
Campaign traits:
Touched by Divinity: Constantine (Abadar-?), Kyami (Irori - enlarge person), Balek (Erastil - protection vs chaos)
None: Haruka, Takka
From the 3 people who choose a campaign trait, the 3 has chosen the same. The guide advises against it and recommends each player choses a different one to maximize the adventure hooks. From all the traits on the guide, the only one that I thought it might fit Kyama is the one attacked by a demon while a child, but so far from the Worldwound… I don’t know to what extend it fits, any idea?
Also the guide advises all the people choosing this trait it works better if all follows the same god. Again, any idea on this? What do you think Douglas?
Different gods:
Abadar: Constantine
Erastil: Balek
Apsu: Takka
Daikitsu: Haruka
Irori: Kyami
No real links here, everybody follows a different god.
I think Haruka and Kyami oriental link can become very strong if we were following the same god. I feel Irori really fits the ‘finding a hero’ role for Kyami, but if Daikitsu is also important for you, I might come with an idea to make it fit into my role.
Alignment:
LG: Balek, Constantine, Takka
NG: Kyami, Haruka
We are good here, a mixture of LG and oriental NG seems to fit. We come to the Crusade with the same ideals. Another point of link in the party.
Fighting styles:
Melee: Constantine, Takka
Distance: Haruka, Kyami, Balek
It seems Constantine is our strongest melee. Foreseeing Haruka and Balek will be better ranged attackers I can focus Kyami into a more support and magic role and drop the Ranged combat feats, or even make it more melee oriented to help the front line. Any idea on this? Douglas, is the AP very combat heavy? or we should focus more on social and other skills?
Overall I liked Constantine background, it will serve us as a good connection to the local. I foresee he can go from a humble beginning to a real crusade hero. Kyami will probably feel a healthy curiosity about the paladin identity by the beginning of the campaign.
Non-bludgeoning silver weapons have a -1 penalty to damage. I suggest making your longsword cold iron and the morningstar alchemical silver. Also to note, alchemical silver can only be applied on a masterwork item, thus silver weapons are by default mwk, and cost and extra +300gp.
Thinking on optimising a bit the party, considering you still do not have access to Detect magic, perhaps it is better you invest the rank in Spellcraft in another skill like K. nobility or Handle animal, which others of us probably would not have, and leave Spellcraft for the casters.
I feel a bit confused why the kobold decided to join the Crusade. Can you give us some more feedback about it? It feels like aiding the weak do not directly translates to fighting demons. Kyami is able to feel pity for the weak too, and following Irori teachings, she can easily admire those who fight their own limitations to improve themselves everyday.
It seems like a real challenge to get a working melee character with that kobold template, you are really brave :) I don’t have any real suggestion, the only way you can try to improve that Str is dumping your Int and/or Wis, in order to approach as much as possible to that magical Str 13 that allows Power Attack.
I like Erastil. Seems like Balek can really be the concrete to solidify the party around. Kyami can easily approach Balek as the father-hood figure she will certainly miss so far from home, what do you think, is it fitting to your character?
Only suggestion is, looking at the skills, taking into account Constantine and Kyami Diplomacy and your Cha, you perhaps can save that Favoured class bonus for a +1hp or use it in another skill. Anyway more Diplomacy is always good. What armor and shield are you going to pick? Going the longbow I can imagine a buckle has more benefit for you.
Given your background, we could synchronize our deities and be from even the same monastery. Otherwise we could have just met on the ship trip to Avistan.
Seeing you already picked K. planes, I am considering to change Kyami to get a different knowledge, arcane is probably a better investment being the only arcane caster around.
Just noting you still have the 2 traits to pick up, or at least I don’t find them in the profile :P
General reflection/Group review
It seems we are a quite balanced group with strong opportunities to bind together. Do not hesitate to socialize with Kyami, she is of the kind ones. A bit snob when it comes to culture knowledge only.
I see none of us has access to unlock doors or disable traps. Being Kyami the main skillmonkey, I am up to pick a trait to get Disable device so at least we can pick locks. I don’t know if the GM thinks this is advisable, and also to what extend we will need trapfinding (we can have a look to archetypes to get it if needed). I have seen some APs full of traps, but this one might not be the case.

Haruka Shiraboshi |

@Kyami:Great work :). Haruka also has Touched by Divinity and Indominalbe Faith (Special Abilitys, below Domain). And she grew up at a Shrine not a monastery, but both could be close enough that Kyami and Haruka have met, Haruka often went exploring when younger :).

Sir Constantine Godalming |

One year ago The initial meeting of SCG and Takka near the truestone quarry..... I think these spoiler tagged back and forths is will resolve the question of how the kobold arrived
Takka
Ten miles East of Kenabres near the truestone quarry, a younger and not yet knighted SCG has ridden a bit further from the quarry and away from his parents, as is considered wise.

Takka of the Toad |

@Kyami Takka is actually trying to become the knight he aspires to be. He came to Kenabres to try and meet Terendelev, the silver dragon guardian, and after meeting SCG, sorta got roped into the anti-demon campaign. He's good at riding Sleek, but his combat prowess is something he needs to work on. Fighting demons is more like a training exercise to him. After he meets and studies under Terendelev, he'll probably set out to wander again. After all, the Worldwound has plenty of brave warriors to lead the charge. His skills can be used elsewhere.
Also, thanks. I love kobolds, and in Takka's case, he does things a bit differently than your average cavalier. He's definitely a tactician at his core. He starts by chucking spears at his foes while Sleek squirts slime at them to tangle them up. Once tangled, or out of spears, he gets out his lance and charges them, then occupies them while he lets someone else make use of his Precise Strike through Tactician so someone can finish it off from behind. Plus, he'll be (literally) glued to Sleek's back most of the time.
I never like to dump stats, so he probably won't be getting Power Attack any time soon, but he has team mates and his mount to help, so I think he'll be set. Cavaliers do better when they have warm bodies to help and help them.
@SCG Takka looks up at Sir Constantine from Sleek's back and nods. "I have the utmost faith that you shall, Sir Constantine. Though, you may have to lead the Eagle Watch in my absence. The crusades have so many capable warriors, not to mention her Scalyship Terendelev... and there are so many others in need of aid elsewhere."

Douglas Muir 406 |

It's okay if more than one person picks the same trait -- these can be swapped out or changed later.
Douglas, is the AP very combat heavy? or we should focus more on social and other skills?
There is combat but you will also find social skills very useful. "I like NPCs".
I see none of us has access to unlock doors or disable traps... I don’t know if the GM thinks this is advisable, and also to what extend we will need trapfinding
This is not a trap-heavy module, but they do occur.
Also, there is still one player who hasn't joined us yet, and he's an arcane caster.

Douglas Muir 406 |
Charisma check with Anycek: 1d20
Charisma check with Torg: 1d20
Looks like the drinking is going better than the romance.
Anycek finds you mildly amusing and it's easy to talk to her. No romance yet, though.
Torg considers Erastil a fine god with excellent qualities, so you got +2 on that roll. Torg is now Friendly towards you. This does indeed involve a certain amount of drinking and also bellowing loud chants about the deeds of the ancestors.

Judge Tohram Quasangi |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

As an FYI - people can post in the gameplay, and then immediately delete their post (just post a (dot)). The end result is no post in the gameplay thread to mess things up, but the campaign will end up in your Campaign tab so that you can easily see when new things have been posted.

Douglas Muir 406 |
@Douglas: do my unarmed strikes count as armed with magical fang ?
Yes, they do. From the FAQ: "a magic fang (or similar spell) cast on a creature's unarmed strike affects all unarmed strikes the creature makes."
Harkua too has a frindly rivality with Anycek(Achery)
She's a better archer than you, too. Clearly she enjoys the competition, though.

Osei Otieno |

Hello, all!
Me: I'm Mith'aj the Tactful (here on Paizo) and I'll be joining you as Osei Otieno. I'm a PhD student on the west coast of the US, studying in the physical sciences. My schedule can be erratic, but I work at a computer most of the time and should be able to post regularly.
Known Absences (tentative dates): March 21 - March 28 - will be launching large rockets from the desert of NV to test cubesat deployment mechanisms. No internet (*starts shaking*) so I will need to be piloted during that time (if I/we survive that long ...).
My experience with tabletop RPGs started back in 1988 with Palladium's adaptation of the world of TMNT, and then moved onto 2nd Ed. AD&D -> 3rd D&D -> Little of 4th D&D -> PF. I've not played a game in a while, nor have I been in a PbP game here yet, but I have been lurking for a few years. Looking forward to the adventure.
Osei: Not too religious, but adheres to Nethys' views on magic, with a Good slant. Notable relationships:
Lord Hulrun: We don't mix well. Osei is polite to the Inquisitor, but due to the wizard's nature, Hulrun is constantly giving him the stink-eye and possibly threatening him.
Riftwardens: Osei has family history involved with them, and he was trained in the arcane by one of their number, but he has yet to be officially involved. Yet.(?)
Laurine: We have, perhaps, discussed matters of magic at one point or another - trading theories, interpretations and little tricks of the trade.
Anyone visiting the Temple of Iomedae in Old Kenabres: If you have visited the temple, especially the library or scrivener's offices, you have probably interacted with Osei (see Background).

Osei, please add the following item to your inventory:
Mendevian Sending Scroll
A Sending Scroll is a single-use magic item that consists of two scrolls, one to send and one to receive. It can be used to send short messages as per the Sending spell. The sender can write a message on the sending scroll of up to 25 words. The words disappear as the sender writes them, and appear a round later on the receiving scroll. Once a message is started, the scroll will remain active for one minute. It takes one round to write up to five words, so a message may take up to five rounds to inscribe.
Sending Scrolls are given to parties that are journeying in or near the Worldwound, so that they can report back if anything really dangerous is discovered. The words will appear on a central scroll in the Grey Garrison in Kenabres. A sentry is supposed to be watching the central scroll at all times.

Kyami:
Balek may be more of a guide than a father figure (he's too young to have gray in his beard yet), but he'd certainly be willing to take a hand in introducing someone new to the area to various things.
Right now, light armor (all he can afford); eventually, maybe a breastplate. Balek is very willing to help and bless those who are going into the front line.
Maybe adjust skills slightly, but generally I think that proper use of skills may save more lives than hit points. Also it's more fun to play if you can do more than just a couple things. Balek is very good at noticing stuff, for instance...

Some hints here.
1) This might come to GMing and playing style, but the group is quite split at the time, so there is little opportunities for Kyami to check the course of action with her companions.
2) There is only 1 exit, thus there is little reason to think waiting will improve our situation, they will just not disappear magically.
3) We might be discovered, and I assume at the moment the Blue group go down the stairs, it will happen. Not acting now means losing the surprise advantage.
4) Calling the attention of one, in case we find a way to do it, will break the surprise effect and force the Red and Blue groups to split, meaning the Red group will be at the mercy of the remaining foes once the fight starts.
5) Waiting can provide more info though about what this people are, but we can force the information anyway after the combat, by intimidation or magic.
6) Yes, we don't know about the power of our enemy, but we will almost never know. Are we going to be running at the first difficulty or accept the challenge and kick some real bad demon asses? :)
7) I haven't forced any course of action. When you called for discussion people was just talking about other things and no one seemed be taking any course of action. Thus I decided to post something that might move things up. You can see the condition "Once the group goes down the stairs", if the group does not go downstairs or they send a signal to go up or something else, the trigger to my actions will not happen.
I will usually do things like that, because PbP is very slow, it is usually better to post a contingency action, "if this happens, I will do that", rather to waiting to answers go and come back.
8) I did not chose to be alone there having to take all the decisions, this whole situation came alone without intervention or decision of my character. I would have done differently by sure.
Note that natural 1 and 20s are not direct fails or success in Pathfinder. I am ok if we use a different criteria, but it will be a homerule and we might want to place it somewhere, in a document or so, among all other homebrewed rules we decide on the go of the Campaign ;)
(I say this because of the comment about rolling a 1 in the Bluff check)
