Looks like grab it is. Do we need to roll init to try it before she can move away? My fate ability is a standard action.
You got a surprise round, you spent it on your fate ability. So to grab her, you need to beat her on initiative. If you do, she's flatfooted, and your fate roll gives you +2 on the CMB check. Her initiative is 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11.
The Wizard will prepare to try to help you.
Fritz Fritzman |
Yah I know about the detect evil DM, it was on the off chance that the Dr. was some crazy OP'd thing that radiates evil, or it was an evil cleric. Also I just think it is what Fritz would do :)
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 init
Vitæ Somnium |
Posting from work currently, apologies for not posting in character or with no RP, will make it up.
DM, can I Ready an action in this situation?
Basically Vitæ will watch to see if they manage to take the keys, if they do he will the use Hypnotic Stare as a swift action, followed by casting Daze as a standard action to buy them time to get out of their cell.
If they don't manage to get the keys, Vitæ will use the above action to give them a 2nd chance, while calling out to them to do so.
Daze with Hypnotic Stare DC 16, Range 30 feet
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Kyleen |
Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Although still tucked in the far corner of the cell from the strange woman, and as far as possible from the other cells and the butcher, Kyleen sees the butcher kicked into the bars and the keys swinging free as the two men in the adjacent cell attempt to grapple the woman.
Raising one hand, Kyleen, or the woman who does not remember she is Kyleen, points at the keys attached to the butcher's waist and attempts to remove them and move them toward Kyleen.
Cast Mage Hand & attempt to get keys if they are loose, or get knocked loose in the melee.
Oracle with No Name |
When the doctor-fiend comes barreling into the cage across the way, Nameless attempts to push herself through the solid wall behind her. We have to get out of whatever hell this is - this might be our only chance. Please ... She swallows hard and tentatively approaches the bars of the cell. Screwing her face up in concentration, she attempts to force her will on the 'doctor'. Voice trembling with uncertainty and fear, she ekes out a: Halt - do not move.
Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Casts Command (Halt) (50% fail due to fugue, DC 15 Will save). The subject stands in place for 1 round. It may not take any actions but is not considered helpless.
DM_DM |
You try to grab the doctor, but she shrugs you off. (Wow, she is stronger than she looks.) She snarls and leaps away from the gate.
"Wretched Befores! You dare!" She turns to the man on the table, who is still kicking one leg and trying to writhe free of his bonds. "Filthy dead-flesh! Done with you! Done!"
She raises the pruning shears in her hand and then brings them down on the man with terrible force -- thunk.
And then again. And again. You can hear the blade's edge grinding against bone as she stabs.
DM_DM |
This counts as a coup de grace attempt. Since a CDG is a full-round action, that gives the rest of you at least one round to act. If nobody objects, I'll say that the wizard spends a standard action unlocking the gate of his cell, then takes a 5' step outside; next round, he'll open the cell across the way (paladin and mesmerist). In this round the rogue is the only one free.

DM is this on the current round or the next round, because I would still like to save the man on the table if at all possible.
What is the distance of the doctor (?) from the cell we are in?

Round 1: you beat her on initiative and threw Daze, but she saved.
Round 2: you still have initiative, so you could throw Daze again.
She is about 15' from your cell; that's within range of your stare, so she would take -2 on the save. If she fails her Will save, she doesn't act this round, and the man takes no damage. Is that what you want to do?

Thank you, and yes that's excaly the action for this round.
Move action to take keys from the Wizard if needed to free him up or to move out of the cell if he opens the door for us.

Daze with Hypnotic Stare DC 16, Range 30 feet
question - do you want me to place the regular DC, in this case 14, and you apply the -2 penalty to the roll, or factor the penalty in the DC I post? IF we live through this I assume this will be used more often in game.
DM_DM |
No, don't add it to the DC -- I will subtract it from the roll. (Why? Because the target gets that penalty against ALL Will saves while you're gazing, not just yours. This is why "Mesmerist gazes, other caster delays action until after the Mesmerist and then casts a Will-based save-or-suck" is a popular tactic. It's slightly easier for one person -- me -- to subtract 2 from the target's Will save than for everyone to add +2 to their spell DCs.)
DM_DM |
The doctor's Will save: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (20) - 2 = 18
Oh, dear. The doctor is so fixated on her bloody work that she takes no heed at all of the magical attack.
The rogue could try a Sneak Attack -- he doesn't have any weapons, but he could grab one of the sharp things off the table. They would count as improvised weapons, -4 to hit and d3 damage. Otherwise, I don't think anyone else can act this round, unless someone wants to try casting another spell. Remember, you have no equipment, so you don't have missile weapons or anything to throw.
Ghelik the Sly |
Keys. Ghelik whispers as he moves by his cellmate putting his hand out. He moves over to the next cell and unlocks it trying to move quietly.
stealth 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Whispers again to Fritz, Try to distract her by grabbing her while I unlock the other cage, she can't be that strong... he says in a cracked and fearful voice.
Vitæ Somnium |
Move action to take keys from the Wizard if needed to free him up or to move out of the cell if he opens the door for us.
Vitæ Somnium |
"Celerity is never more admired than at the present!"
Vitæ reaches out a hand to assist his fledgling allies.
DM_DM |
Okay, Round 3. First off, did the unfortunate fellow on the table survive Round 2? Auto-crit damage means he took 1d3 ⇒ 1, doubled, plus whatever her Strength bonus might be, also doubled. (The rogue can attest that she's way stronger than she looks). To survive he needs to make a Fort save with a DC of 10 + damage taken. Fort save: 1d20 ⇒ 18
DM_DM |
Table guy is still twitching, though it's not clear whether he's still alive or these are just muscle spasms. In any event, the enraged doctor will 1d100 ⇒ 90 make sure of him; she's still hacking and stabbing at his bloodied form.
Iniatives for Wizard 1d20 ⇒ 20 and Paladin 1d20 ⇒ 8
Who can act before her: Oracle, Bard, Mesmerist, Wizard.
Who acts after her: Paladin, Rogue.
Where you are at the beginning of Round 3: Rogue is outside of his cell and may unlock one cell this round, either NE (Paladin and Mesmerist) or NW (Bard and Oracle). If you delay your action until after the Rogue, you can leave your cell. (Don't forget, though, that you don't have any weapons or equipment right now.) The Wizard has also slipped out and is standing 10' down the hall to the west, making sure the Rogue is between him and the doctor.
Fritz Fritzman |
Fritz grabs the bars and squeezes, feeling helpless as he cannot do anything to help the man so locked away.
ooo I hope he lets us out
Oracle with No Name |
"<sigh> Don't try again, it's pointless. Honestly! Just let the hapless fool rot."
Nameless peers down the corridor, watching in horror as the fiend stabs the man on the table relentlessly. The doctor-thing had was hideous and had a near palpable will, but she had to do something, she couldn't just watch the man die. Stop - you are wasting that most wonderful of subjects!
Once more - gotta fail sooner or later, it can't roll 17-20 all the time ... Command (Halt) (DC 15).
Fritz Fritzman |
Fritz charges the Dr.
Goddess, give me the strength to destroy this evil.
using Guilty Smite
charge + smite-PA: 1d1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 + 1 - 1 = 13 for 1d3 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 7
Fritz charges thing to slam his fist into the Dr's head
wow the dice are not kind to poor Fritz
Oracle with No Name |
So Round 3: the doctor is standing there, blade upraised but motionless, not paralyzed but momentarily at a nonplus. The Bard acted, the Wizard is hanging back, and the Rogue has unlocked the cell across the hall. The Paladin and Mesmerist are free and can act; the Oracle can act but is not free.
Bard(no posts)/Oracle(Command) transposition?
Kyleen |
Gaining a little confidence, but still wishing to remain as far as possible from the crazed butcher, the bard again speaks some arcane words that she suddenly recalls, pointing at the butcher as she does. Suddenly a patch of slick grease appears under the woman spreading away in the direction opposite that from which the other prisoner's may approach.
Cast Grease - DC14 Reflex or fall prone
--> Make the area so that the doctor is on the edge and the rest of the party can approach.
DM_DM |
Okay, Round 4.
Four characters are free. The Oracle and Bard are still in their cell but may be released this turn on the Rogue's initiative. The Paladin is standing next to the doctor. The doctor is prone.
Who can act before the doctor: Oracle, Bard, Mesmerist, Wizard.
Who acts after her: Paladin, Rogue.
Vitæ Somnium |

Once more with feeling.
Taking a 5' foot step out of the cell.
"She may be of value, given our current collective situation, best let her not journey into Death's Realm presently."
Holding Standard action please, Daze with Hypnotic Stare DC 14, Range 30 feet to be cast when the doctor (?) attempts to get up.
Surely she knows ... things.

Looking at the people in the cage, Sorry, I gotta help the guy punching the women...help make sure she never gets back up.
To the old man that was in his cage, get em out if needed.
He tosses the Oracle and Bard the keys and hobbles over to the table where the knife was towards the opposite side of the women.
Ranged touch attack for square, AC: 51d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 Lands just inside the cage on the ground.

Your slow movement means that's all you can do this round. You now have one of the sharp items from the table -- a long shard of broken glass with a piece of bloody bandage wrapped around one end. This counts as an improvised weapon; you can attack with it next round at -4 to hit for d3 damage.

"Indeed! Maybe the transformation offered by the obviously gifted Doctor would be beneficial."
Nameless flashes a quick glance to her cellmate. Did they follow from the ...*shudder*... can she hear them, too? She squats to grab the keys and peers at the other woman for a moment. No recognition or response. With a worried crease in her brow, the Oracle with No name goes to work on the lock.
