Focusing on glimmers, seeking lost thoughts, remembering past memories ... Dreaming.
What has happened? What has brought me here? Why am I with these others?
The Dreamlands are full of information. That's what dreams are, after all... information without the constraints of gross matter. Insight, intuition, prophecy, knowledge: it's all here.
Of course, so is madness. That's information too.
DM_DM |
But this view is so much better, and you can see so much more! They all have holes in them, but the wizard's hole is the biggest. Wait, no, the Fritz in the straitjacket doesn't have a hole -- but is awake and is slowly working free. The older woman has a several floating buzzing things swarming around her -- you couldn't see that before, but now you can! That box everyone is looking at? It's a little knot, tied in the world, with things on the other side! And if you look closely, you can see bits of everyone's past and future!
Of course, this may take some time. And, here's another thing: You are dissolving. You are slowly melting into the waters of the lake. Clouds of you-stuff slowly diffuse outwards from where your legs enter the water. You are becoming more intangible. Soon you'll be translucent, then transparent, then simply gone.
On the bleak shore of the lake, a little distance away, tall figure in yellow is stalking slowly along the water's edge, like a stork on the lookout for frogs. There are things perched on its shoulders (?). They look vaguely birdlike but they are not birds. (They are the tiny little fish who swim beside the shark.)
The thing in yellow cocks its head (?) at you. Haven't I seen you before...?

1) Simply trying to wake back up would be a Concentration check requiring a FRA.
2) Actions that you could normally take (walking, talking) should be possible, though be aware that different parts of the Dreamlands have their own rules. For instance, you might try to swim in the water and discover that it is impossible to push yourself below its surface, or that doing so causes you to turn into a monster.
3) A general rule in the Dreamlands is that you can, by force of will, sometimes accomplish impossible things. This is usually modeled as a Charisma check, with a DC depending on how appropriate it is to the dream.
Dream actions do not always work as you wish. For instance, you might be running from a monster, and decide to turn and throw a Fireball at it (even though you don't know the Fireball spell). You might make the check, and throw the spell... only to have the monster lunge forward, swallow the Fireball whole, belch thunderously, and then continue chasing you without having suffered any apparent harm.
4) You are dissolving. While this process is painless, it will, if not interrupted, lead to your ceasing to exist in the fairly near future.
Vitæ Somnium |
I rolled an 01/d100 -- which, frankly, should have killed you right there; this is a bad place to be messing about with the Dreaming -- but then you rolled a 20/d20. So! What are you doing?
Let's not tempt Destiny. At least not just yet.
This is not the part of the Dreaming I belong to. But how can that be? I am one with the Dreaming? Not everything is revealed to me. But to stay longer ...
Hesitant and with resignation, his face baring an even a more melancholy look than he held before, Vitæ let's himself slowly return to the Waking world. But before he does he does two distinct things.
Vitæ can see bits of everyone's past and future, and seemingly at random, picks on one of the others and attempts to discern what he can. He looks on with hope that to learn of this one may help him discern his own Truths.
Time seems to speed up, one world shifts towards another, and at the last possible moment, just when the horizon of the Walking World touches upon the umbra of the Dreaming, Vitæ calls out to be the tall figure in Yellow, with non birds perched on it.
It is neither a challenge nor a boast, but rather a nearly agonizing bray ...
'WHY?!
DMDM I was going to pick bound and awake Fritz to be the individual subject I focused to attempt to divine some information on before Vitæ leaves the Dreaming but then thought it best to leave that to you. Cheers!
Mrakala |
"My book!" Mrakala lets out an unpleasant, and slightly panicked sound. He begins mumbling to himself as he rummages, becoming increasingly frantic until finally he sits down with bits of bloody tarp all around him.
"I must find my spellbook.." He mutters to himself, sounding more like a lost child than a middle-aged scholar. However, with a shake of his white head and a reminder of famed Brevian muscle wizard Karlov's essay, "Mundane Survival for the Spell-less Arcane," he pulls himself together.
"Step one of Karlov's essay. Locate your spellbook. Step two: work with what's around you."
Mrakala looks around and sees, with quite some alarm, that one of his newfound allies(?) is beginning to fade. "Is the man part gnome?" he exclaims while pushing himself to his feet. He snatches the mostly intact footstool and approaches cautiously, reaching out to prod the man.
Possible assist to the concentration check to come back by distracting him, providing real contact with the regular world?
Vitæ Somnium |
Vitae: it's not "let". You have to make a Concentration check. And at a minus because you're trying to double-task.
Sorry I think I may have posted my post while you were posting yours directly before mine and missed yours. Could I focus on one PC first then take a full round action the next round?
Vitæ Somnium |
If possible take a separate round to focus on one PC and try to glimpse or read about him/her.
Then next take full round to enter the Waking World. If Vitæ gets out please feel free to bot what he says he just saw.
If expediency is better part of valor then take full round action immediately.
Full round action in either case
Concentration: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
edit Did not add possible assist

Bravo Mrakala! I love that.
And thanks for the possible assist!

The ashes are lumpy, suggesting that there may be larger, unburnt items in there. Above, a chimney or ventilation shaft ascends into darkness.
Not so subtle prod?
Oracle with No Name |
That's disappointing. Nameless pushes up from her kneeling position by Straitjacket Fritz, coughing the last of the salt's vapor from her lungs. She turns and stares at Chained Fritz without blinking for a few moments. She cocks her head as if listening to something nearby. Fritz, is it? The woman swallows, and walks to a point just outside arm's length in front of the chained man, and holds the spear in a defensive position. Motionless, aside from a slight tremble in the spear, she stares into his eyes.
"Ha! Now *this* is gettin' excitin'. About time, ya flighty tease!"
You said earlier that you follow the Inheritor. Will you please do us all a favor and recite aloud the tenets of your order?
Using Knowledge (Religion) roll from before I would like to verify that this person either knows the information or doesn't. These actually exist somewhere, I recall seeing them, but can't remember where.
Oracle with No Name |
Not so subtle prod?
Yes, definitely going to check out the furnace after we determine resolution for the Fritz Scenario. And hope it's not piles of undead.
Kyleen |
Seeing the furnace being investigated, and still unsure of who she is, Kyleen quietly moves over and looks into the fire chamber. Not wanting to risk the inferno relighting, she speaks a few arcane words that suddenly come to her mind, causing a small, almost transparent, hand to appear inside the furnace. She then begins to carefully move the hand, attempting to get any of the large lumpy objects, or at least to wipe off the ashes.
Action - Cast Mage Hand and use it to search inside the furnace.
No clue if, or what, the skill check might be.

Religion, real world or roleplaying, facilitates me. I put up the Tenants of the Iomedean faith in the discussion thread.

It looks like for now the lunatics have the run of the asylum.
Yordan Patar |
In that case, Yordan will carefully watch either Fritz for signs of danger, while putting his back to the wall to ensure no one else sneaks up behind him. Still in a position where he can keep an eye on the entrance, of course.

1d100 ⇒ 10
One leg of the footstool actually goes *through* his arm, which seems to have a consistency like mushy slush.
DM_DM |
The ragged yellow figure is now moving along the shore towards you. Several of the things that cling to its tangled sleeves leap free and begin flying towards you. They aren't birds. They don't flutter like bats, either. It's hard to say just what they are. They seem to... ripple, through the air.
Fortunately for you, since you took a complete second round, and had an assist, you just barely make the check to wake up. Less fortunately, this gives 1d4 ⇒ 2 two of the flying things time to reach you.
1d20 ⇒ 10
DM_DM |
You are literally caught between two worlds at the moment. Trying to take any actions at this point would be extremely dangerous -- you need a few rounds to literally pull yourself together. You can speed this process with another successful FRA concentration check.
Meanwhile, you're standing in the door. Which allows things to come buzzing in...

Er, in the Spirit of not Dying in 2016, would this be a good time to use one of your gracious rerolls?
Vitæ Somnium |
In the Spirit of Christmas, I bring you Holiday XP ! Please, please, no need to thank me all at once, 'Tis the Season. Your unique expressions of er, 'wonder' are enough thanks for me.
Vitæ Somnium |
Vitæ will take any and all assists if you guys want to please throw that in there guys. Mrakala was on the right track.
Yordan Patar |
Yordan also heads over and does what he can to assist Kyleen. (She released him from his bonds. He trusts her. As much as he trusts anyone here.)
Assist: 1d20 ⇒ 16 plus whatever. Looks like that works.
Knowledge: dungeoneering to see if he can figure out what's up with Vitae: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Oracle with No Name |
Yes, well... what are y'all doing?
Wondering why Chained Fritz has gone mute; Nameless is fixated and might not have noticed Vitae's predicament yet. DMDM - if this is a poor line of action, or you think it's out of character please tell me so.

I need an assist in coming back to the Waking world. Please! And fast!
DM_DM |
Per a previous post Ghelik was checking the Fritz on his knees for a stab wound in his back from where I stabbed the false Fritz, this includes checking by touch.
Any damage done to a Fritz before the second Fritz appeared is identical on both. Damage done afterwards will appear on one Fritz but not the other -- the straitjacketed Fritz has a slash wound that the chained one doesn't.
Vitæ Somnium |
Yes! Please add any assists as you see fit.
This is a reroll of my second full round Concentration Check, Vitæ's first roll was a 17, his second a 9 which he is rerolling hopefully with some assists from the Wizard and the Bard
Concentration: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
edit same roll as first round before taking to account assists :(
Vitæ Somnium |
On the floor, Vitæ is gasping now, his body clearly straining, his mental foray plunging him between one world and another leaving him worse for wear.
He coughs/shouts a warning between breaths.
Gasp 'Arm yourselves! ... Two ... fleshless ... ' Gasp 'from the Dreaming ... flew through!'
IF you need Init roll DM, and only IF
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
edit merp now the high roll comes :(
Oracle with No Name |
DMDM: Just to clarify - the Fritz on the ground isn't bleeding out/dying, correct, just unconscious?
First one, then a second object rises into the air -- the doctor's bloody shears, and the long shard of broken glass.
Alert!
Say something, blast you! Glancing over the shoulder of the mute, standing Fritz, Nameless sees Vitae ... fading back into reality? What...?
Gasp 'Arm yourselves! ... Two Dark things Gasp from the Dreaming have flown through!'
"You see, dear, this is why you never turn your back on a table full of sharpened, inanimate objects. Tsk tsk tsk."
A slow expression of horror creeps back onto the oracle's face. No! The dream ... Nameless skirts around Standing Fritz to put her spear between herself and the new source of danger.
Mental 1: DC 15 Will Save to put self in danger/not cower.

Mental 1: DC 15 Will save to put self in danger/not cower.
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 ... so close.
Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Yordan staggers back against the wall, eyes wide and fixed in horror as he stares at the shears smeared with his blood. He remembers them punching through and through his flesh, cracking bones... a faint "No... " slides between his lips.

We are so dead.
Kyleen |
Is there a reason that people are rolling Will saves and Init? I don't see DMDM requesting this, although I could have missed it.
Kyleen takes a piece of blood cloth from the pile and tosses it over the floating shears and glass.

Rolling Will save for special stat Mental 1, per, e.g., this post from DM_DM. Init because, well, Bad Things Incoming.
Also, will save above should have been 1d20 - 1 instead of +1, so a result of 18 instead of 20. Mechanically the same, just clarifying.
