DM-Camris' SAVAGE TIDE: Chapter 3, The Savage Kraken's Wake! (Inactive)

Game Master Camris

SECTION 5.3: THE SECRET OF THE THUNDERER
Bodyguards to Lady Vanderboren, our heroes have refurbished an old pirate ship just in time to embark on a fateful voyage south.
Trapped in an awakened Sargasso, they seek the heart of it to escape!
"With sloping masts and dipping prow,
As who pursued with yell and blow
Still treads the shadow of his foe,
And forward bends his head,
The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast,
The southward aye we fled."

-Coleridge "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner"

With the village canoes either taken or sunk, there is no pursuit.
With only a few wrong turns in the dark and twisty alluvial mouth of the great river, you eventually find your ship again.

With the drums throbbing in the distance, Spinnaker Jon does not wait. It's still 3am, but he casts off immediately when everyone is aboard.
With all lamps lit and torches out looking for navigation hazards and threats, he seems to hum a tune under his breath, and the river currents seem to move the ship to his whim.

It's still a couple of hours later, but under a swiftly rising sun you raise sail, and the Savage Kraken heaves under your feet again as you leave the river mouth and head into the open ocean.

After the first day devoted to resting and recovering from the cannibal ordeal, Spinnaker Jon invites people to dine with him in the captain's cabin.
Aside from the ships partners, Bryson, Ghirrak, and Annie, he also invited Burian, Devon, Marius, Sunny, and Phillip.

After a fine meal of fresh meat and vegetables, there is a fine dessert of spotted dice (a kind of raisin pudding) and a fine wine, chilled by dipping it fifty feet down in the water.

Jon stood up and raised his glass.
"To all you here assembled, heroes all, without which our expedition would have been doomed to an ignominious end in a cannibals stomach." He touches his glass to those nearby and downs it.

Having taken quite the 'shellacking' from the angry and aggressive natives, Sunny doesn't scamper so much about the place. Though she does still smile and tries to be as helpful as she can, the subtle winces and twinges her motions elicit show that she's still a ways from being healed up after the parties tussle.

Her main worry is the fate of her friends whom with she's been traveling and her new friends, Master Avner and Miss Rynight.

When the call comes for herself to attend the Captain's table on a following evening, She again puts on her 'best' and presents herself promptly. Though there's a slight stiffness in her motions and probably still some bandages about her person.

As she perches on her chair, she too raises her mug in reply/acknowledge-meant of the Captain's toast, though she can't hide the blush of embarrassment which colours her cheeks.

"Iz a' rum. Dun't usually effect m'self like this. Must still be hurtin' some..."

For DM:
Not wanting to detract from celebrations or the flow of the coming Role Playing aspect.

How is the native who was taken captive on the beach? Has he been simply left behind in the sands? Which is not a bad thing.

Or did the party drag him aboard ship? If so, is he still doing all right? Or as right as can be given the circumstance?

Also... might Sunny invite Avner and Rynight? They are her friends as well.....Well, she's still trying to make friends with the lass....

Bryson and Annie are snuggled up together. They seem to have partaken of Cayden's holy water even before dinner.

Sunny: Avner was not taken, and was restricted to the ship because he couldn't swim or operate a ship's boat.
Rynight Trendit was beaten by the cannibals (a lot of pinching), an is still in shock, but otherwise unharmed.
The native was unceremoniously dumped ashore when the ship shoved off to leave the area
Spinnaker Jon has developed a dislike of Avner, and neither he nor Rynight were invited to this particular gathering.

Ghirrak is silent as he eats, wordlessly raising his glass at the approriate time. The entirety of the previous day was spent in solitude either in meditation or staring off into the ocean, his face an expressionless mask.

Spinnaker Jon nodded to Devon.
"Aye, we were very fortunate. It was some kind of ceremony, so the cannibals took their time preparing their... dinner. You got there just in time. Nobody dead, but both Cody McCool and Tin Nysmore were on some kind of roasting grille, and thier burns are horrible. Annie tells me they need Regeneration and time to heal. The rest are bruises and minor cuts."

He tapped his glass for attention (this means you Bryson!)
"I wanted to talk to you all about something I've been considering. With the loss of ships Partners Bindleplotz in an explosion and what with Dgrim being eaten, I think we need to add more partners.
"You have shown yourselves intelligent, capable and enterprising, and I would like to offer you, Burian, Devon, Marius, Sunny, and Phillip, the chance to buy in as partners in the ownership of the Savage Kraken. Something I do NOT intend to offer Avner Meravachi."

Sunny frowns a little at the comment of the people who've been hurt. Drinking a toast to their recovery and such. At the Captain's talk of herself being now included in the whole partner-ship thing she again blushes with slight embarrassment. Though, people's dislike of Avner still has her puzzled somewhat.

SO... Sunny repeats her performance with the chest to the captain. (^_^)

Over the next days/weeks Sunny does her very best to help lighten poor Rynight's moods/inclination.

Bryson likes Avner, but even he knows that having Avner become a partner would not be something he would like. "Phillip!? Why Phillip?" he blurts out. "The only thing he does is loaf around on deck and try to look good. Burian and Marius almost died saving our friends. What can you say for Phillip?"

"Now, now, Phillip has been of valuable assistance to me getting the charts and navigation right.
"Naturally, the current partners must agree by majority vote. Plus there is the small matter of the buy in. The current partners have about 2000 gp into the ship, and we would need any new partners to chip in the same."

He went to a side locker, opened it and dragged a heavy ironbound pay chest out into the open.
"Oof. Sunny here is chipping in her share from this old pirate treasure chest she found."

Burian unceremoniously unclasps his belted scabbard, and offers his cutlass for his share.

"Well I would definitely be interested, but currently I have not got those funds. Also, unlike Burian here, I have not got the luxury to give up my blade. All of that being said however, my needs are small and I will give up the majority of my shares to make up this buy in. Whatever works for you Captain."

"I find myself a little short of the two thousand in ready gold," Marius said, "but I'm confident I can make it up with a couple of items. I've also been doing some appraisal of the gear we seized from the village, and it would come to a reasonably tidy sum if sold. If everybody's amenable, the enchanted greatsword ought to cover Devon's buy-in."

Getting a stake in the expedition was definitely a step up from where he had been a few short weeks ago. Perilous though the expedition might be, Marius was confident that they would each recoup this initial investment a few times over.

Sunny's demeanor turns more thoughtful as her friends make their finances known.

Spoiler:
So... does/did Sunny have a chance to drag the other chest she found on the wreck under the water-fall back to the ship all that initial meeting encounter ago? Could she have simply 'nailed it' to the bottom of the ship's hull as an expedient way of taking care of things (Wedging it in place some where t'wixt rudder gear and stern) if so, then I'm pretty sure of my next post (^_~)

The tanned Elf chews absently at her lip even as she seems to be trying to think of or remember something.

" T'were somat.... maybe somat important..." She murmurs

Sunny:
Yes, it's just within your weight capacity to swim with, and if you didn't want to take it on deck, you could wedge it under the anchor carriage, or tie it to the trailing safety line (it's underwater), or put it in the basket where Spinnaker Jon has a couple of bottles of wine cooling in the waters below the ship.

Island Elf(link) HP 20;56;Fort+6;Ref+11;Will+4;Perc+9; Init+4;AC17(19)Defensive:21

"AH!" Sunny suddenly exclaims and bounces upright before seeming to leap off her chair and dashing off, out of the cabin.....

Some small amount of time passes...

Before a damp and only tanned Elf returns all happy, skipping and smiling... carrying a new chest she's obviously some how had stashed away some wheres also damp.

Placing the (Can't find the specifics of tha' detailin' of tha' thing. Thinkin' it weighs in about five pounds?) said item on the diner table with a slight 'Oomph' of effort just in time for one for the sailors to catch up with the Elven lass and throw her shirt over tanned shoulders.

"Aye, thank'e!" She replies partly distracted as she is in sticking arms through sleeves while inspecting this new development.

"I founded it!" She declares brightly. "In'a ship whut were under tha' water falls. When we's gettin' way from them native folks that other time." She burbles by way of explanation.

"Whut, with every thin' I bin learnin' an' seein' an' doin' an' travelin' an'fightin' an' stuffs... I plumb fergots about this one." After the paperwork is dealt with, Spinnaker Jon pulls out the charts, or what passes for a chart out here in the great southern ocean.
Now that we're here at the mouth of the great river, this is where the journals of Lady Vanderboren tell us we turn south into the open ocean.
"We're making for the Isles of Axuxal, and the Olman village of Renkrue. The isles are barely a hundred miles out, maybe a weeks sailing with fair weather, but trying to hit an island in the middle of the ocean is a mighty tricky thing, especially with these crude charts and directions.

As for the helping of things with the ship in relation to getting to where ever it is they're going. The best Sunny can do is help with the steering of the ship's course.

With Spinnaker Jon judging that no further purpose can be held by hugging the coast, he turns directly south into the open ocean of the vast Densic Gulf. It is your first taste of the vast Vohoun Ocean, and for the sailors used to following the certainty of the coastline, this is worrisome. Every sailor knows the biggest and most dangerous monsters are out here, just waiting for unwary sailors (maybe even sailing over the edge of the world!).

With the passengers still rattled from their close call with the cannibal village, Annie works overtime (with liberal doses of beer) to keep morale up.

Sense Motive DC15:
But Lord Avner sure seems chipper, schmoozing with the passengers, and even the odd crew member; though they don't seem that receptive.

Spinnaker Jon puts everyone with any kind of Craft skill (esp. Carpentry, Cordage, Sailmaking, or Profession:Shipwright) to work on the damaged portions of the deck, spars and rigging.
Everyone who has them, make such rolls as skills you have.

Despite that, the sailing is beautiful! The deep swells are like the breathing of a giant, and many birds circle around, with you the only place to perch in many miles about. The winds are light and the temperatures are only mild to hot.
Professor Forol is in heaven; investigating the birds and fish out in the deep ocean.

Sunny:

Going to Rynight Trendit's little curtained off area, she falls weeping into your arms. She says she is certain that Avner has been cheating on her with some of the other women of the passengers.

Though, perhaps, some of the more complicated -social- causes for the developing situation have completely escaped her notice.

Sunny scratches her blond mop, even as she too looks out over the horizon's vista.

"If'n tha' Cap'n be wantin? I could, y'know, swim out fer a space an' check tha' depths an' such fer perhaps tha' lay of tha' land?" She suggests/offers diplomatically. (^_^)

Burian helps as much as he can - particularly with the decking repairs.

When Spinnaker Jon grows concerned, he offers input... "The birds say there is land not far from here." He points due west. "The clouds... they hold firmly as if over land...."

Spinnaker Jon nodded at Burian and Bryson.
"Well, it's certainly not here. Let's check it out. Make course straight West!" He bellowed.

"Miss Sunny," Said Spinnaker Jon diplomatically. "Let's take you off of woodworking. What I would like for you to do is go down and see how deep the bottom actually is. It's deeper than our plumb line can reach. If we're over the Abyssal Deep, we've come too far." He said.

OK, the deepest the lead line goes down is 30 fathoms (180 feet). Anyone going down is going to be deeper.
There are also the usual number of sharks tagging along behind the ship. They usually get nosy when a human dives in.

Sunny gives the Captain another jaunty salute before turning and scampering off to her cabin. Upon her return she is wearing nothing but netting wrapped and secured about her lithe frame. The item held in place with knots and cheap jewelry. Affixed to said item are dozens of the small wooden spikes she's been absently fashioning in her spare time. Across her back is a very well made quiver while a small bag sits just below at the small of her back, almost like a 'bustle'. A simple rope belt being used for this purpose.

What Sunny is wearing:

She'd also give Rynight another reassuring hugging. (^_^)

So some netting wrapped about herself to which she's affixed,
Her 'Efficient quiver' containing all 10 of her harpoons.
Her 'Bag of holding' type 1 into which she's put as many of her master work buoys as she can (Hopefully all eight of them)
Rilly, rilly LOTS of Wushu darts. They have no weight and are really small and such. So, she shouldn't run out of them as ammunition for quite a while.
Two 'Adventurer's sash' across her chest in a 'bandoleer' fashion.

Again on deck she gives the Captain and First mate another jaunty salute in passing before turning and climbing the rigging, possibly to the bemusement of the crew who by now would know she's supposed to be going over the side.

Upon reaching the Main top yard (The big beam to which the main sail is hung from) Sunny deftly walks out along the top of such (Taking ten should see her with an 18) (The down wind side, of course) before giving herself a final pat down, leaning back and.

"Aah-eeh-ah-eeh-aaaaaah-eeh-ah-eeh-aaaaah!"

Thence diving off and gracefully arcing down into the ocean waves.

Acrobatics:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Swim: 'Can take ten for an automatic number like 20'

*SPLOOSH*

The momentum from such a long drop/dive should see her with more than enough momentum to quickly shoot down past any lazily circling sharks and such.

(^_^) Taa-DAA !

Can Ghirrak breathe water? Probably not, so cast Water Breathing on him if he really wants to go.

Bryson Wildshapes into a shark as he jumps overboard.
