DM-Camris' REIGN of WINTER Part 2: The Shackled Hut (Inactive)

Game Master Camris

SECTION TWO: Strolling through the Howlings
The winter portal has closed, but the heroes now find themselves trapped in the frozen land of Irrisen with an urgent quest—to find Baba Yaga! In order to track down the missing Queen of Witches, the heroes must brave the monster-infested capital city of Whitethrone, where Baba Yaga’s Dancing Hut has been captured and put on display. Will possession of the miraculous artifact lead them to the Witch Queen, or will they die a cold death at the hands of Irrisen’s White Witches?

For the direction of the sled, I will keep with Nadya. She can only go straight, so let's not split the party.\

Since it is a move to go forward, Ten-Penny will use a standard to demoralize the wolf before she dashes off.

Ten-Penny looks back after being shot in the shoulder, giving a murderous glance towards the wolf. With a low growl, she then mushes the horses to move forward.

I too have cold resistance 2, so I take 15 damage (an unfortunate reflex save for me...) I also assumed I was in Giacomo's channel radius for the 7 healing. If not, then I am standing on 0 health.

Ten-Penny looks pretty worn down, but tries to keep the horses going.

She then takes out a short bow, maybe in vain, but she is going down fighting. Maybe she could let the horses trample over incoming hunters, Ten-Penny thought.

Gondork shouts for Arwyn to focus on the wolf, while he takes care of the eagles. Ten penny then glides the sleigh away from all three. The hunters ahead just narrowly being missed by the horses as they begin to ride right by.

The horses, spooked by the hunters, are hard to control this round. no slowing down.
(incidentally. in some odd loophole. i think the easiest way to slow down a muscle powered vehicle, is to abandon controlling the vehicle, as long as there's nothing ahead that you'll crash into. two turns of Uncontrolled (no action) will decelerate it to zero. )
if you'd like to abandon controlling it instead of spending the move action this round, i'll allow it. Nadya will be taking this tactic on her turn.

the hunters land an immaculate shot on gondork, but it barely pierces his sub-layer of armor. And Nadya takes a powerful shot that nearly knocks her off the dog-sled. its then followed up by a swoop from one of the eagles, and she collapses, falling off the sled into the snow.

Rules nerd here: technically you can't fire a bow while prone, but maybe GM fiat will allow it.
Prone
The character is lying on the ground. A prone attacker has a –4 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use a ranged weapon (except for a crossbow). A prone defender gains a +4 bonus to Armor Class against ranged attacks, but takes a –4 penalty to AC against melee attacks.

Gondork, unsure for a moment, grabs Ten-Penny's potion and gulps it in one go. A cry of rage boils up from his throat, sputtering bit of potion as he roars. Blue sparks fly from his full plate once more.

Move to take potion, standard to drink, swift for movement speed increase

RAARGH! TIME TO END THIS!

A bloodthirsty glare shimmering with blue energy and hatred settles on the wounded wolf.

YOU! I WILL END YOU!

Next round: charge wolf

Charge, CI Greataxe, PA: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 1 + 2 = 20

yup, you channel, and then the sled moves forward another 20 ft. on Nadya's turn and coasts to a stop. the dogs unsure what to do.

ten-penny, you can either hop off in motion w/ an acrobatics 17 check, or wait for it to come to a stop 25 ft. ahead, before the sleigh comes to a stop.

After Gondork has taken the potion, Ten-Penny smirks and suddenly jumps of the sled.

She then shoots at H4.
Short Bow: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 - 2 = 23 for 1d6 ⇒ 5

I assume that it were H2 and H3 that are surrendering. If not, then one of them gets an arrow.

Giacomo hops off the sled and plows through the snow, all the while shouting obscenities at the hunters. When he finally comes to a stop, he lifts his holy symbol again and channels energy.

Excluding all guards, even those who have surrendered. I'm just in reach to also heal Caladan.

And people say healing in-combat isn't useful. I think I saved all of your asses by now just by channeling. Nadya's in decent shape again and I saved Caladan from going down.

oh yeah , forgot to say, the guard on fire that surrendered, took a chance and rolls around in the snow. hoping you won't shot him for putting himself out. =X

Nadya, having been brought to the brink, gives another shot at H4 since he seems to still want to play.

Gondork shouts at Caladan with an irritated glance.

When are we finally getting some peace?

He helps those in need with getting up, before commanding the soldiers to gather and tying them up loosely.

Who is your leader? Answer swiftly, my patience wears thin.

Dear god, glad that is over

Ten-Penny sees the remaining hunter surrender as well, and puts away her bow. She then hurries towards the now still standing sled with Arwyn still in it. She boards it, takes the reigns, and turns the sled around, back towards the party.
(Maybe I'll also fetch the dogsled if Nadya is too busy)

When back with the rest: "Well, that was afwul... I saw Giacomo raising his symbol like crazy... Guess there is not a lot of healing left, so either we have to be careful or find shelter and call it a day."

Then, very unceremoniously, she starts checking what the hunters have with them. Gear, maps, consumables. Everything except their "survive the cold" stuff, they need that in order to not freeze (and she'll get flak from Giacomo if she endangers them any further).

"Say Arwyn, you said that the wolf-pelt was valuable. But is its meat safe to eat? It looks like easy rations to me at the moment."

"We don't know anything, please, just let us go. Norgrimm was our commander. All we know is that a White Witch ordered Norgrimm to head to a tower outside the town of Waldsby and look for a suspicious group of adventurers traveling to Whitethrone from that direction. A cleric, a snowborne, and two half-orcs, and a tiefling." he nods towards the winter wolf's body. "Please we don't know anything else, Norgrimm kept the details of the dealings to himself."

eh. its probably edible. you successfully skin the winter wolf. you've now got a magical cloak called a rimepelt. its a one-time use item when activated.

rimepelt wrote:
This snow-white fur pelt of a winter wolf can be worn over the shoulders as a cloak. The pelt functions as furs, granting its wearer a +2 bonus on Fortitude saves to resist cold weather. The wearer can, as a standard action, transform into a Large winter wolf as if using beast shape IV. In certain special locations where winter wolves have the ability to take human form, such as the Howlings district of Whitethrone or the town of Redtooth, the wearer of a rimepelt in wolf form can take human form as winter wolves do, appearing as a whitehaired, blue-eyed human. In either wolf or human form, the wearer of a rimepelt smells like a winter wolf to other winter wolves and creatures with the scent ability. When the wearer returns to his normal form, or after 2 hours have elapsed, the rimepelt becomes a mundane winter wolf pelt.

Ah, ***t. I missed that Create Treasure Map had a material component. Can I safely assume I have those so that I can cast it on the winter wolf?

Arwyn eagerly examined the longbow, admiring it's power; but she tossed it back into the pile of captured equipment, disappointed it wasn't as well crafted as her shortbow.

you can deduct the material component for a few castings from your treasure, since its not an insignificant material component. that way you've got it for a few castings when you want it. Making the rimepelt from the winter wolf preculdes casting create treasure map on it, since prettymuch all of the supple hide / surface is taken up by the magic item.

All is not lost, Arwyn. If you can gather the reagents in a town and puppy-eye Giacomo, he might be willing to cast Masterwork Transformation on one of the bows for you (Ultimate Magic was not banned, right?).

"Is that really ALL you know? Really?" Ten-Penny says with a wicked smile. "Because I think you know more than you tell us. You attacked on sight, directed your eagles to harass us. Took advantage of the attacking wolf. All that without your precious commander. I do not see him ANYWHERE!" Ten-Penny drives her dagger in the snow, right between his legs. Where is this Norgrimm hiding? What does Whitethrone know? And while were at it, I want to know all possible entrances to Whitethrone, and where its guards are stationed! And if you think even for a second that anything I do to you can be healed by a cleric, a reminder that some things do not grow back when I CUT THEM OFF!" And as Ten-Penny shouts that, she quickly maneuvers the dagger forward through the snow, stopping just short of his crownjewels.
