SECTION TWO: Strolling through the Howlings
The winter portal has closed, but the heroes now find themselves trapped in the frozen land of Irrisen with an urgent quest—to find Baba Yaga! In order to track down the missing Queen of Witches, the heroes must brave the monster-infested capital city of Whitethrone, where Baba Yaga’s Dancing Hut has been captured and put on display. Will possession of the miraculous artifact lead them to the Witch Queen, or will they die a cold death at the hands of Irrisen’s White Witches?

Greta growled even louder now and threw her hands in the air.
"Fine! Pass! Get out of here!" She shouted as she stomped off.
Her partner in the guard shack snickered quietly.


Quickly, Ringeirr shouts "Mush!" and directs you all where to go as the gate bar is raised and you push the cart through the huge gap in the city walls of Whitethrone.
Beyond the gap, you enter the district known as The Howlings.

The streets of the Howlings wind back and forth crookedly, and are lined with wooden houses covered in intricate and detailed woodwork. Unlike in the Fishcamps, even the poorest homes are in good repair, pleasantly decorated, and painted a clean white or light pastel colors. The rooftops are steeply pitched to allow heavy snow to slide off. Covered alleyways run between some closely adjacent buildings, sheltering groundfloor entrances from the elements.
In other places, open-air bridges or crosswalks join buildings together at their upper levels.
Snowdrifts lie heaped between houses, but the streets are shoveled and brushed clean.
There is little sign of domestic animals, but handcarts are parked outside some residences.

Both Ten-Penny and Gondork caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of their eyes, and are thus not caught Flat Footed when a shower of cobblestones and darts fell among the party.

Ten-penny then helps Gondork push forth the load of fish, as far away from the tykes as possible.


While the rest of their companions flinch from the rain of missiles, Gondork and Ten-Penny start rolling the cart forward.
Ten-Penny shouted "Leave us be, you little pests! Or we'll have the Winter Wolves gobble you all up!" But they don't seem to be intimidated.

A voice shouted back in Skald...:

“Leave the fish cart, longshanks! Run! Get out of here!”

Round 1______________________
The little monsters throw aside their camouflage and take up their horsechoppers to attack!

Ten-Penny takes quite some hits, as she is not wearing any armor [ooc]and I doubt I'm wearing my deflection ring and amulet. But seeing that the little tykes are attacking from a distance, Ten-Penny suddenly steps extremely near to them (5ft step, no longer threatened by the Horsechoppers). She then quickly pretends to hit Goblin #1 in the face, and when he flinches, she instead punches him in the gut.

Giacomo starts shovelling armfuls of fish from the cart onto the street. If they're carrying horsechoppers, I guess I'd provoke from number 4.

We've passed the checkpoint, right? So we should be safe with dumping the fish?

Arwyn, knocked down by a critical hit, staggered up again.
Heeding Caladan’s call, she grabbed one of the bigger frozen fish and started moving towards Red 3.

Ringeirr lunged towards Red 5 to tackle him but missed.

Giacomo takes some heavy cuts to the face, and sees others are wounded as well. He raises his holy symbol and channels energy to heal, selecting out the goblins that were already hit. I can exclude three, but I think there weren't that many injured yet.

Desperately, he yells, "I gave you our fish, what more do you want? Leave us alone, or you'll get hurt!"

Ten-Penny Kicks up some snow at #2 (Feint), and then when he is distracted by the snow, punches his lights out.

Giacomo Channeled positive energy to his friends (excluding the already unconscious goblins) then yelled at the goblins in fury.
Ten-Penny again fainted, then punched Red 2 in the face, sending him crashing back into a cart and down to the ground unmoving.
Gondork swung on Red 6, again clipping him for minor damage.
Ringeirr continued to grapple with his goblin.
Caladan shredded Red 4, tearing its little head clean off.
Arwyn swore at the goblins and grabbed a frozen fish from the cart. Lunging at Red 3, she grazed him for minor damage.

Giacomo starts yelling at the group of Goblins. "You wanted fish, we gave you fish! We asked you to stop attacking, you didn't! So this is all your fault, remember that!"

Giacomo takes a five-foot step back, then throws a Burst of Radiance at the bomb-throwing Goblin, aimed in such a way that Ten-Penny won't be in it.

Gondork took off his armour and stuff, but I still had everything, right? Otherwise, ignore this post.
Anyway, Reflex DC 14 to either become dazzled or blinded, and if he's Evil 4d4 damage. I'll post it in spoiler tags below just in case he isn't evil.

Burst of Radiance damage:

As she made her clumsy attack, the goblin squalled and lashed out at her…

Giacomo starts yelling at the group of Goblins. "You wanted fish, we gave you fish! We asked you to stop attacking, you didn't! So this is all your fault, remember that!"
Giacomo takes a five-foot step back, then throws a Burst of Radiance at the bomb-throwing Goblin, aimed in such a way that Ten-Penny won't be in it.

You are undercover as poor laborers, so no expensive arms, armor or anything else of worth. You can skate by with a belt pouch or two, but surely nothing else. If you DO want something more hidden on your body, you would need to roll a Sleight of Hand check (size gives bonus or penalty).

The Burst of Radiance flashed and the Goblin leader squalled as his eyes went blind and his skin went red with sunburn.

Gondork makes sure the goblin is focused on him, (this still provokes), keeping a close eye on his companions and the bomb-throwing one.
Gondork beats his goblin unconscious.

Arwyn and Caladan combined their efforts to bring down Red 3 with Arwyn’s frozen fish.

At this point with all the goblins down except the blind one struggling in Ten-Penny's arms this battle is effectively over.
How do you deal with the last goblin gangster?

"This one surrenders!" Ten-Penny shouts as she holds on to the squirming Goblin.

"What do we want to do with this one? Question him, knock him out, glue him to the wheel of our cart?"

"I don't care. You can wring his little neck as far as I'm concerned!" Snarled Arwyn as she wiped her bloody face.
She glared at the frozen fish she used as an improvised weapon and threw it down in disgust.
"I'm getting my stuff!" She snarled, then stomped over to the cart and started fishing around under the fish.

Gondork only needed a small push, and quickly gives in to Arwyn's suggestion. He digs in the cart and puts his stuff in a large knapsack on his back while carrying the mirror himself.

"Yeah, my stuff too! Question the Gobbo and then kill it!"

So I was waiting for the voice of mercy (Giacomo) to say something, but it seems the little man was completely caught off-guard by the sudden explosion of violence, and hasn't had time to compose himself afterwards. Poor Gobbo... your life will be relatively shorter than those of other Gobbo's.

Goblin:
"So, pray tell, what was the big idea here? Were you ordered to attack us? And if so, who's orders? You better start talking, or I'll make that miserable existence you call a life a whole lot shorter."

The Goblin screeched; "What orders, we're the Back Alley Boys! We take what we want from merchant weaklings! You're not weak so you can go now!"

Arwyn determinedly fished about under the fish, then dragged her bundle of equipment out and started buckling it on.


"Wait. Wait!" Said Reingeirr, waiving his hands as he looked around frantically.
Seeing no witness, he shrugged.
"OK then, I guess we're out of sight of the checkpoint.
"Let's get your stuff and drag the bodies out of sight under something heavy. Under Whitethrone’s laws, we're all guilty of murder."

After he gets his own stuff, he gets everyone on the cart again.
“Once we deliver the food,” he promises, “we go straight to get your papers. Then I’ll take you on to the Shrine of Milani.”


Quickly searching the bodies before you pile them under an overturned cart, you find:

Feeling a bit warmer in the steady snowfall and more secure with your own equipment, Ringeirr leads you on through some back alleys, horsing the fish cart along with you.

DC10 Perception check:

You notice a robed and hooded humanoid figure—perhaps an elf or slim human—about 50 feet ahead down the alleyway.

Towards the Goblin:

"Take what you want from weaklings, huh? Don't mind if I do!"

Ten-penny then punches the goblin several times in the gut, knocking him out of commission.

"He said we're allowed to take stuff from weaklings, so I guess their gear is now ours."

Ten-Penny then gathers the Goblin's gear, moves towards the cart, and gears up with her own gear. "Aaahh, much better!"

While moving the cart through the alleys of the town:
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
"Say Reingeirr, you see the the hooded person present in that alleyway?" Ten-Penny whispered. Friend or Foe?"


Ringeirr turns pale and frantically motions for you all to step out of the creature’s line of sight.
“That’s one of the mirror men,” Ringeirr whispers. “They’re spies of the Queen. They have some magic way of speaking to the White Witches, who can see whatever the mirror men see.
"We have to hide, get it to ignore us somehow, or kill it.
"But if it becomes suspicious, don’t let it escape alive—or we’re done for, all of us!”


The mirror man walks slowly west towards you, its head turning back and forth looking for anything out of place.
It looks to you that you have about a round to act before it gets to you.
Unless you draw attention to yourself...

Roll initiative checks!

You can hide, run away, scramble up on the covered roof, get behind tree cover, try to act normal, or get inside a building.
What do you do.


Arwyn jumped up onto the covered roof and lay flat.
Ringeirr and Ten-Penny pretended to be itinerant traders bending their backs pushing the cart.
The others hid.
The Mirror-Man walked slowly past the cart, giving Ringeirr and Ten-Penny a look over before moving on.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22
The Mirror-Man paused, looking at the tracks in the snow. It followed Arwyn's tracks up to the support pillar of the covered roof and looked around.
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28
The Mirro-Man looked up and spotted Arwyn.

"Crap, better take care of this fast!"

Ten-Penny lets go of the cart, and quickly moves towards the Mirror Man, drawing both her Short Swords in the process. She then tries to stab the Mirror Man right in his mirror face.

Short Sword: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 and 2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 sneak (piercing)
Debilitating Injury set to Disoriented: For one round, the target takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls. The target takes a -4 penalty on all attack rolls it makes against me.


Your combined might is too much for the Mirror-Man, and it goes down under your swarm of blows.
"Number eighteen, what are you..." A raspy voice comes from the face of the creature before a club smashes it to bits and it is cut off.


"Let's get out of here!" Shouted Reingeirr, who then led everyone to the cart and started pushing it down the alleyway. "Don't bother hiding the body! Move!"


Soon the fallen form is lost behind you in the falling snow.

You push the cart down the alleyway and around the corner.

Ringeirr indicates the house at the end of this street as the destination for the fish in his handcart.

He knocks on the door, which a brief moment later cracks open just enough for a figure to peer out.
After Ringeirr exchanges a few words with the person inside, the door bursts open and a man, a woman, and several children stream out and start carrying the fish inside.


"Yeah, there is a whole network of neighbors will see that the food is distributed fairly. We'll ditch the cart here too. They'll take it apart and use it for firewood." He said you you quietly.

The adults pause momentarily to thank you all, and their gratitude for the party’s courage and generosity is evident.

"Alright. Now lets get to Mortin and get your papers."

yah, semi closed.
mostly recruiting from an email thread in the netherlands from people i know. but seats that don't fill up from them are welcome to be filled by others.

expectation is about 1 or 2 posts a day. slow roll long campaign ( probably be about 8 months to a year before we finish book 1 of reign of winter. )

Is there a 'theme' already in place with the current players?


Not really. I'm a Cleric of Sivanah and there's an Inquisitor of Abadar, that's pretty much it. We couldn't really reach a consensus (though Gondork might be affiliated with Sivanah for flavour).


What do you think of a half-elven Ranger (archer path)(APG Skirmisher)/Fighter (APG Weapon Master). Core plus APG, so 18 point build.


fine by me. my note is that the party will be lacking a bit of arcane power/ knowledge. its a little covered by the occultist. but i think we've two characters with a 5 intelligence? so we're down skills. a ranger with at least some esoteric arcane knowledge might be useful. a ranger will be useful anyway =)

if we retcon a theme or anything i'm fine writing it in to the story, its just a little literary masturbation so far because the party isn't cemented yet. ( in the gameplay thread )


@Camris: as long as you don't get mind controlled I'm perfectly fine with that! (Seeing as we need a bit of Survival etc as well)

Appearance:
Arwyn Fynolt is a beautiful elven girl. She is slight; barely 5’6”, and slender as all elves are. Snow white skin, Ice blue hair and eyes, long upright ears that look sharp enough to cut flesh.
She dresses in the usual motley of brown and green that is almost the uniform of the Rangers. Over one shoulder, taller than she is, is a longbow.


Arwyn is the daughter of Tassaraea Willowbark, a snowcaster elven alchemist who was exiled from her clan for having a child with an Ulfen hunter.
Arwen's father was killed by a group of trolls while she was a babe, after Tassaraea was exiled from the snowcasters.
Devastated by her husband's death, Tessarea fled south from both their clans disapproval, she and Arwen ended up here in Heldren 25 years ago and took a human sounding surname.
Since then, she has stocked a potion of resist energy (cold), and a surprisingly large stockpile of alchemist fire - since the death, people know she's had an irrational fear of trolls, and she's got moments where she obsessively crafts the stuff for the (in her mind) inevitable moment when she must face them again.

Growing up, it was hard for Arwen to make friends with her exotic coloration. She took refuge wandering out in the deep forests, where a solitary experience offered solace. She learned the Longbow and the ways of the forest, and it was no surprise when she took up the profession of Hunter, Scout and Guide; the same as her father.

From her Mother, she learned of magic that resided in things. She heard many stories of magic artifacts, their makers, how they were made, and lost and quested for. She gained a curiosity about the magical realm that would increasingly guide her.
As she came into her adulthood, she became increasingly restless. Her parents would tell her little of the snow covered lands where they came from; and her imagination filled in the gaps with impossible beauty, rugged icescapes and warriors of surpassing valor. She wondered if she dared to go visit such a land. Her parents had came from there hadn’t they?


have an opening, controlling Ten-Penny Tacey, a half-orc rogue 3 at the moment, if anyone is interested.
