The chute is a tight fit, but Appario is able to squeeze into it and start making his way upwards, hardly making a sound at all. Before he comes far, he realizes whatever lies above is as dark as the chute itself.

At hearing Appario's difficulties, Maddok grazes the climbing Abadaran's boot and asks the spirits to show him the way.

Light on the Appario's footwear.

I'll hold off on responding until Appario states that he does, in fact, ask for help with seeing in the dark :)

Sorry, I should have gotten him to actually do that. We were communicating via chat messenger.

Okay, I'll assume he wants light and move on, then :)

***

Light spreads upwards from Appario's boot where he's bracing it against one of the chute's walls. He sees that the chute is fairly short; in fact his eyes are already slightly above the floor of the room above.

From his boot's position down the chute, the light's spread doesn't provide much help with seeing what the room above looks like. But Appario does see a pair of boots moving silently to right beside the chute's opening, and the length of rope held in the arms of the man wearing them. There's a noose at the end of the rope.

As far as Appario can tell, the man doesn't see him. Instead, he sits down on his haunches with the rope at the ready, waiting for someone to appear in the chute.

***

If Appario moves further up, he'll leave the range of Xerath's invisibility sphere.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario stares at the man for a few moments, thinking.

I bet one of those hats are wide enough to stop that noose. Or maybe Yahirma has a plan.

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35 Stealth to Climb down

Appario will quietly act out what he saw to everyone using all his thespian training.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 Bluff

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

Derek suddenly stiffens and only barely manages to avoid giving himself a facepalm.
I just said my magic involves singing...and then I cast as spell anyway! Not the same spell granted, but still...

He contemplates telling the others, but the shame of making such an obvious mistake is too much and he keeps quiet, hoping that he has not revealed their position already.

Several people have been talking and casting spells, so Derek is certainly not alone in that regard! Invisibility is a nice thing to have in such situations :)

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

Maddok stares at Appario, completely baffled by what he's trying to convey.

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

Don't go ruining Derek's dark self recriminations with logic and sense now.
Actors are VERY proficient in decieving themselves as well you know haha.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario rolls his eyes at their inability to clearly understand the gesture of noosy-man-above-planning-to-stranglify-us.

All that time on stage and I still suck as an actor. Perhaps Xerath will give me lessons. He's very good at pretending to be human.

Appario relents the gesturing and speaks quietly.

"Noosy-man-above-planning-to-stranglify-us. I don't think I can get him cleanly while climbing. Also, he might be deaf."

Let it be noted that Yahirma is at GenCon, probably has a new tablet by now, and might be more delayed in participating in all this. Politely recommend DMPCing Yahirma until she returns.

"Why didn't you just say that?" Xerath quietly asks.

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

Stranglify? The man is using a different dictionary than I am. Maybe he is drunk? Does that mean I should act like a soldier of Abadar?

Confused and somewhat curious about that idea, Derek forgets his previously so crippling guilt as he looks around the room, suddenly seeing everything covered in a golden sheen as well as having a tag with name and value attached.

Oooooh....shiney....

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

Maddok looks up again.

"There's no way all of us will be able to get up there quickly and quietly enough to surround him. Do what you can", the big Shoanti whispers.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Appario smiles and nods at Maddok's suggestion.

"What could possibly go wrong?"

Appario slowly and stealthily climbs back up.

Take 10 climb = 19.

1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32 Stealth

* * *

When he is as close as he can get without being seen, Appario will reach for the man, trying to grapple him and drop him (with Appario falling too) down the chute.

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23 CMD to grapple

Appario Lind wrote:

Aaaah. Bad four-letter word. Bad! I'll consider NPC'ing her, instead :)

But since Yahirma posted yesterday, I'm not sure there's anything to worry about.

Reflex to hang onto the edge: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Appario grabs onto the man's foot and pulls him down along with his own fall, a surprised yell escaping the other man's lips. Appario lands on the ground below the chute, with the man landing on top of him after first striking the floor next to the chute's top.

Falling damage (Appario): 1d6 ⇒ 3
Falling damage (the other man): 1d6 ⇒ 3

Both Appario and the man lie prone on the ground. The man wears some type of lenses over his eyes.

Appario is no longer invisible, but can attempt a DC 20 Reflex save to maintain the grapple while falling.

Initiative checks:

Appario: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Derek: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Maddok: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Xerath: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Yahirma: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

Livia: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19

Thieves: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Current Initiative order:
23 - Appario
19 - Livia
18 - Thieves

***

Appario, somehow, is still able to react first to the development.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Round 1, Init 20

Wow. Like I thought, nothing could possibly go wrong.

Appario will draw his sap as he moves to get up and brings it crashing down.

1d20 + 12 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 12 + 4 = 21 to hit (prone);
1d6 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 7 + (2) = 10 nonlethal damage (sneak).

Appario's stats:

AC 23, touch 17, flat-footed 22. (+7 armor, +3 Dex, +2 deflection, +1 dodge)
hp 58/61
Fort +8, Ref +11, Will +8

Lay on Hands: 5/day 3d6 healing
Smite Evil (+2 to hit, +2 AC, +6 damage) 2/day - 1 used
Divine Bond 6/min day. -used

Psst: Appario has used smite evil once (vs the vampire) and his single use of divine bond (to make his sword merciful) already this day.

***

Appario's sap strikes the man over the head, causing a bump to form there, although the hump is smaller than he'd expect. Perhaps the blow wasn't as precise as he thought, after all.

Shortly after, Livia's whispered voice comes from above. "There's another one up there!"

The man on the ground tries to stand (provoking from Appario), while drawing his rapier.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Agreed, DM Are. Fixt.

1d20 + 12 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 12 + 4 = 25 to hit;
1d6 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 nonlethal damage.

The sap once again connects with the man's head, and he wobbles somewhat as he stands. Yet, he's still able to shout "There's an intruder!" and attempt to stick his rapier into Appario.

Rapier attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Rapier damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Appario takes 4 damage as the rapier hits him.

***

Up next: The PCs (except Appario), then Appario (round 2).

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

"Damn..."

Maddok looks up at the dark room above.

Shoanti:
"Spirits of the Guardians - whose faithful guard the stream of time where all souls grow. Maddok of the Hawk Clan calls upon you! Send one of your dutiful warriors to aid us in our time of need."

Summoning a hound archon in large hound form in the room above. I'll take a 5-foot step away if needed to get away from the rapier-wielding enemy.

Shoanti:
"Brother, enemies approach. Secure that room!"

If there's anything immediately hostile to him up here:

1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 9 - 2 = 26
1d8 + 6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 6 = 13

Trip

1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 11 - 2 = 22

Also, Aura of Menace.

You can't summon one that has already changed its shape, so it has to use its standard action to do that rather than to attack.

In any case, however:

***

The claws of the archon scrape against the floor above as it moves about, and then stops. The language of the Heavens, somehow mixed with a hound's growl, floats down to the group below.

Celestial:

"They hide, but not well enough!"

***

Up next: Yahirma, Xerath, Derek (all round 1), then Appario (round 2).

Male Chelish Arcane Caster 12 HP: 98/123 AC: 38 FF: 23, Touch: 22 F:+16, R:+12, W:+19 Perception:+18(Effects: Mage Armor, Heroism, Barkskin+4, False Life, Freedom of Movement, Remove Fear, Shield

"Scuffling with one as delusional as he must be tiring. I suggest you take a nap." Xerath says to the one fighting Appario.

Suggestion: Will Save DC 19

Will save vs suggestion: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8

As Xerath breaks the invisibility sphere, the thief thankfully decides to take a nap instead of informing his friends of the additional intruders he can now see.

***

Noone is invisible anymore (except Livia).

Up next: Yahirma and Derek (round 1), then Appario (round 2).

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Round 2

Appario will actively look for a way out of this closet, clearly there must be something they were missing.

Appario will take out his Lens to aid his active search.

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23 Perception

"There has to be a latch, a catch, or a door here someplace."

Appario doesn't find any other exits from the chamber beyond the chute leading up, and the hidden door the group entered through.

***

Still to act: Yahirma and Derek (both round 1).

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

Damnit, didn't bring any rope or manacles.

Derek begins to look around for something to use in restraining the man sleeping.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

Derek notices the 50-ft length of rope the man was holding in his hands before he fell, which now lies directly beneath the chute.

***

I'll assume Yahirma is busy with GenCon, now that everyone else has acted, and take this turn for her.

***

Yahirma bends down next to the man attempting to go to sleep and gently picks the lenses off his head. You'll sleep easier without these. She begins to say what she was thinking, but then realizes Infernal might not be the best language to use for soothing someone. Instead, she rises and puts the lenses away.

***

From above, the sound of several crossbow bolts being fired in quick succession can be heard, followed by a hound's growl and then the sound of something big crashing into a door.

Livia's voice cheerfully floats downwards. "I'll help the dog!"

***

Up next: The PCs (round 2 for all except Appario, then round 3 for Appario). The archon already acted, unless Maddok wants it to do something else in response to being attacked.

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

The Archon can defend itself in whatever way necessary.

Maddok grips the sides of the chute and starts pulling himself up.

Climb - 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

Maddok finds it fairly easy to climb the tight-fitting chute, but he quickly realizes that the light coming from Appario's boot (currently below the chute) won't be able to help him much once he gets up into the dark room.

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

If Maddok can get into the room with a standard action remaining, he'll put Light on something on the floor as he finishes his climb.

It's a full-round action, unfortunately, since the tightness of the chute is sufficient to force a climber to the squeeze as he climbs. So for now, Maddok will have to suffer in near-blindness (he can only see the immediate surroundings of the chute, which isn't much).

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

Any chance Livia picked up light as one of her cantrips? =P

Maddok looks around blindly in the darkness and stays near the chute to help anyone else climbing up.

Shoanti:
"I am blind in this darkness. How many of them are there brother?"

She has darkvision and see in darkness, so that's a spell she'd not even consider trying out :)

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

Derek retrieves the rope before moving over to the sleeping man.
As he kneels to begin the process of tying him up he calls over his shoulder to the others.
"Can someone fix a gag of some sort?"

He's not sleeping yet; he only started trying to go to sleep 6 seconds ago (and most people don't actually succeed at falling asleep within that short amount of time). Notice how I called him "the man attempting to go to sleep" above :)

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

Yeah, keep it down. You guys are being rude.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

Round 3, Init 20

Appario searches for another way in again.

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (14) + 16 = 30 Perception

If Appario finds something, Appario will open/move/twist it.

If he finds nothing, he will begin to climb, following Maddok.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 Climb

Appario's stats:

AC 23, touch 17, flat-footed 22. (+7 armor, +3 Dex, +2 deflection, +1 dodge)
hp 58/61
Fort +8, Ref +11, Will +8

Lay on Hands: 5/day 3d6 healing
Smite Evil (+2 to hit, +2 AC, +6 damage) 2/day - 1 used
Divine Bond 6/min day. -used

Appario remembers the front doors into the building, and might consider them a potential alternate way inside.

He doesn't find any other path forward from the current chamber. In fact, the chamber seems to contain nothing except the hats on their pegs. As far as Appario can tell, though, neither hats nor pegs appear to be connected to any sort of magical or mundane mechanism.

***

The man trying to sleep absent-mindedly pushes at the rope Derek has in his hands and mumbles "I don't need that to sleep."

***

Still to act: Xerath and Yahirma (both round 2).

Male Chelish Arcane Caster 12 HP: 98/123 AC: 38 FF: 23, Touch: 22 F:+16, R:+12, W:+19 Perception:+18(Effects: Mage Armor, Heroism, Barkskin+4, False Life, Freedom of Movement, Remove Fear, Shield

Xerath casts a spell to have vision in total darkness. He then attempts to climb up after Maddok and Appario.

Casts Darkvision on himself.

Climb check

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Xerath's hands and feet are unable to find purchase on the walls of the chute, and he makes no upwards progress.

***

Yahirma lightly touches Derek's shoulder and whispers.

Infernal:

"Let him sleep. The ones above will know us soon enough."

At Xerath's struggles, she points at the knotted rope sticking out from Appario's haversack.

Infernal:

"Let us wait until he's up, then our climb will be easier."

***

Following his time spent looking around, Appario gets about halfway up the chute.

***

The light from Appario's boot lets Maddok see enough of the room above to figure out it's vaguely octagonal in shape, and that the archon next to him must have tried and failed to break through a door Maddok can barely see. The archon braces for another attempt, yet before it can try again Livia's voice sings out an incantation and the door flies open on its own.

The room beyond is dimly lit, perhaps by no more than a single flickering candle. Several more thieves stand within the room, all with hand crossbows at the ready. The archon storms inside, receiving a peppering of crossbow bolts for its trouble.

Crossbow damage #2: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Crossbow damage #3: 1d4 ⇒ 4

Two bolts strike the archon, but they don't seem to bother it. Instead, it flies into the throat of one of the men beyond, easily flinging him to the ground (using the attack/damage/trip rolls Maddok made above).

***

Up next: The PCs (minus the archon; in future rounds the archon will be safely back in Maddok's hands). Round 3 for everyone except Appario.

With the dim light from the adjoining room, Maddok can make out that there's 4 men inside in addition to the one the archon attacked. There's two additional doors leading out from the room Maddok is currently in.

I'll have a map up at some point; I can't promise it will be tonight, but Maddok can move to reach any of the men, although he can't charge since the archon is in the way.

Male thoradorian minotaur ranger (wild hunter) 5 [ HP 63/63 (0 NL) | AC 18 Tch 12 FF 17 | Fort +8 Ref +6 Will +5* | CMD 25* | Init +1 | Perc +8 | Effects: none ]

Maddok rushes into the room drawing his hammer as he does.

He roars a warcry as he closes, sending Shu-Ak’eh-Di's power through the weapon's head just before he swings in a screaming arc.

Rage

1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29
Miss Chance 1d100 ⇒ 39
1d6 + 21 ⇒ (1) + 21 = 22

Maddok's hammer crushes into the nearest enemy, coming close to dropping the man in a single swing, yet not quite doing so.

***

Up next: Xerath, Yahirma, Derek (round 3), Appario (round 4).

Appario is currently halfway up the chute, so noone else can climb up until he's at the top (requiring one more move action).

Male Chelish Arcane Caster 12 HP: 98/123 AC: 38 FF: 23, Touch: 22 F:+16, R:+12, W:+19 Perception:+18(Effects: Mage Armor, Heroism, Barkskin+4, False Life, Freedom of Movement, Remove Fear, Shield

Xerath will tap his foot impatiently waiting for Appario to get out of his way. He will call upon his magic to protect him from physical harm.

Cast shield

Yahirma will delay until Appario has acted (if still under GenCon NPC'ing). Leaving Derek and Appario.

I'm going to make a map of the upper level of the building now, so I'll probably not be able to respond for another couple of hours or so :)

Male Human (Azalanti) Hp: 96/110, AC: 30 Bard 8/Fighter 4

Just hold Derek for now.

Male Human (Taldan) Abadaran Militant 12

On his next turn, Appario will climb again.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 Climb

If he makes it up the chute and he will draw his shield.

Let's get ready to smite-ble!

DM rolls:

Appario perception #1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
Appario perception #2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
Eye stealth: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19

Appario makes his way up the chute without problems. With the added light shining from his boot, Appario sees that this chamber has three doors, one of which is currently open. Behind that door, Maddok and some kind of big dog are fighting against several men dressed in similar fashion to the man he pulled down earlier.

Appario also notices a spy hole in one wall (at W24).

***

Muttering under her breath in Infernal as Appario neglects to send the knotted rope down to help the rest of them climb up, Yahirma attempts the climb unaided despite her slim chances at succeeding.

Climb check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18

Somehow, she actually does manage to get up the chute, perhaps aided by her indignation.

DM rolls:

Yahirma perception #1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Yahirma perception #2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

***

>>>Current Map<<< (Yahirma is also up, but I haven't placed her on the map yet)

Up next: Derek's full action, and a move action for Xerath (one move action can only bring him halfway up).

Male Chelish Arcane Caster 12 HP: 98/123 AC: 38 FF: 23, Touch: 22 F:+16, R:+12, W:+19 Perception:+18(Effects: Mage Armor, Heroism, Barkskin+4, False Life, Freedom of Movement, Remove Fear, Shield

Xerath will attempt to climb up then.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

But as per usual, he cannot make it up.Guess I need 30 strength or really good luck. :(
