I'll actually try to take this opportunity to fill in some of that background you missed earlier. It shouldn't have been a dialogue (which also means I'm making some things up, but within the context of the scenario), but I'm perfectly fine making it one.

The undead creature waits there, almost pacing undecided if it will simply spring and attack or not. Finally, through a broken, frigid voice, mostly in Dwarven, with a mix of Draconic and Skald, it speaks from behind it's mask. "Who are you. . . to disturb. . . the rest. . . of the . . . honored dead? In life. . . I, . . . Haldyr,. . . son of Bjorn, . . . vanquished all. . . who would. . . challenge. . . me. Now. . . in death. . . I have. . . no fear. . . of. . . death."

That name seems familiar. Haldyr. You are not sure. Something recent, then you recall. As you where asking around, you spoke to the harbormaster, who indicated he had rented a warehouse to an individual named Haldyrsson. . .

In the far off lands of the Linnormworm Kings, there is an older custom of sending off fallen "kings", their warchiefs into the next realm by placing their bodies and possessions on their ship, and as they send the ship off, setting it ablaze, both as an offering, but also, so they believe, a method to ensure that respected leader arrives in the Boneyard with their ship and treasures to continue on after death, things are slowly beginning to slide into place. Being as this ship has not been set aflame, and that Bengeirr, called Haldyrson attacked Skelg, stole (back) some possessions, and left the warrior to die "like an old woman in his bed", you are starting to understand some of what has happened. Or at least, possibly what happened. It might explain why Skelg refused to comment, even to his friend, your VC, just where he amassed his wealth, though clearly you do not have the full picture. dun, dun, dun. . .

Then the ship crashes. You all die. No save. :P

Not trusting him, you move past him quickly, climbing the stairs to find a rather beautiful, if not a little cruel looking woman sitting upon a makeshift throne. The soft glow of sunlight again penetrates into this ice cave, and several braziers burn near the walls. Other furniture in the chamber suggests that this is her private quarters. The woman looks you over as though judging a draft animal, and asks, “Have you come to work the oars? I am in need of more rowers.” Spotting the lantern in your hand (or at your belt), she stops. "Ah, I see You come on behalf of my husband. . ."

She stands tall, almost regally, like a queen might while addressing you, but there is a certain, savagery in her eyes, and in her tone. Seeing the lantern, and whatever dark memory it spurns, does not seem to help her mood, though.

she listens to your words, trying to decide if she can trust you or not.[/I\

Can I get Aid Anothers for Diplomacy.

"My name is Natalya. Natalya Yagevna of the Frozen Lands of Issiren. Long ago, I was wed to a warrior, a leader of the tribe named Haldyr. It was a political marriage, and he died very shortly afterwards. The custom of his people where that all of his achievements where to be burned with his body at the funeral, and that included myself. This was not my custom. Haldyr's son, Bengeirr Haldyrsson locked me aboard this very ship, which was my dowry, and sent it out to sea. But I was rescued, by another warrior. This Skelg, the Ripper." [I]She stops for a moment, only a brief second, despite her bitterness at her husband Skelg, as if remembering something fondly.

"Skelg attacked the funeral, and managed to get aboard the ship. He found me, and freed me, and together we managed to escape, fighting of the entire village, and giving Bengeirr's people a bit of black eye in the process. Skelg saved me from death, and we sailed away. . . According to the laws of our lands, that makes us married. But Skelg left me, taking a few things that where to be burned with Haldyr and disappeared. That lantern was one of them. And now he needs my help. I'm more inclined to simply take the lantern, and let the bastard rot away with whatever he brought upon himself."

Know Nobility DC 20:
Yagevna, her maiden name does sound familiar. They do hold some political power and sway in her homeland, and having her as an ally to the Society might be a nice little ace up the sleeve later on.

Sense Motive DC 5:
Obviously the woman scorned, it's clear she has a seething furry at Skelg and the way she had been treated, but that also means there might just be something a little deeper still there.

Sense Motive DC 10:
She has not mentioned it yet, and probably would not for pride's sake alone, but you get the impression that she is some sort of nobility amongst her people. Natalya from what you can tell, seems lonely, wants to be freed of this place, this ship, though it's not clear why she does not simply leave, and also seems interested in the lantern, specifically.

Sense Motive DC 15:
You get the impression that she may be bluffing a little bit, and not really understand the powers of the Lantern or it's curse.

"Perhaps, but I am not certain,. . . it will work. Here is my bargain. Take it or leave it. You will return to Skelg, and convince him to come here. I will attempt to free him, if he agrees to return with me to Irrisen. As of now, I owe him my life, and by our laws, he is my liege and lord. However, once I have saved him, that will make us even. He may then begin to earn my forgiveness, and perhaps, one day, re-earn my affection."

With little other choice, you agree, both unsure that you will be able to get "the Ripper" to agree or to survive the trip, but also unsure if Natalya can pull off what she claims.

Your return trip is unimpeded Going downstairs, the Ghoullord, Natalya's first husband, has returned to his rest upon the frozen pier. Unable to help herself, Saarai quickly pries the burial mask off and stuffs it in her packs, whistling innocently as she walks away. Stormtooth of course notices, and sends an empathic sense of danger to it's master, but the corpse does not rise, and everyone walks very quickly from the room.

All the way back to the ship's deck, you see the portal still remains, though it is wavering, not unlike the flame of a candle nearing it's end. The lantern is nearly dry, and you know if you are going o pull this off, you must move quickly.

Running towards Skelg's body, you find him once again awake. "Yooou, you still have. . . have noooot found. . . a way. . .to remove this currrrssseee? I. . . I am willllling ttooo die, then. . . It willlll not. . . be long. Attt le. . . at leasttt you triedddd. . ."

Through chattering teeth, Skelg indicates that he has no wife, and seems very confused. But after hearing her name and further details, agrees to go to her.

Skelg agrees to go, both curious about Natalya and also a hoping to be saved. He honestly doesn't seem to know what's going on, but as you carry him into her room, and their eyes meat, you first think she will call on her magic, if not sheer wrath of a woman scorned to strike him down, but she stops.

You are not sure why she stops. Perhaps after all of this time, seeing the individual she loves to hate and hates to love is such a fragile and sickly state, it seems to warm her heart just a bit, perhaps, just perhaps, send a small crack up her frozen heart. A crack that just might allow something else to take root, even grow perhaps.

Taking the lantern, she begins to speak to it, rubbing her jeweled finger along the small etched runes. Her words are in Skald, the language of the northmen, though it is an archaic form, and suddenly it explodes in it's silvery light, flooding the room. Two polar beams begin to form out of the globe, and first hits the Ripper, seems to go at an angle, through the wall and ceiling. Skelg obviously feels much better, no longer shivering, and states that it is as though something has been closed, or maybe removed from within them. As that happens, large cracks begin to form in the ice around the ship, and it slowly begins to fall away.

The two ask for a bit of time to talk alone, and as you step into the other room, you can hear them reconciling. From what you can hear, (even though you are not trying to <probably>), it seems that Skelg, as he raided the funeral party, was drunk on both strong drink and rage for some past blood-feud, and had gone there not expecting to come back. He instead struck many lucky blows, and managed to find himself on the funeral ship. Trying to avoid being burned to death, he also stumbled upon the bound Natalya, and freed her. (Natalya insists at this point that he swore to return to her, and together they would get further vengeance against her late husband's family.) Skelg on the other hand seemed to have thought he was rescuing her and once out of danger took his leave of the ship, with more than a few treasures from it, and not too long after that "gave up the life".

It basically seems to end with Skelg apologizing profusely, and agreeing to return with Natalya, to work things out, if she will have him. He later confesses to you that these events, and what you and the Society have done, remind him a bit of the old days, his younger days, and he longs to return to the life of adventure. He will rejoin the Society, and go back to the northlands, with his wife, and taking the ship, now christened "The Iceberg", and travel the world.

A slightly more gentle Natalya comes from the room, and offers you a small chest, saying it the last of the funeral's treasure, something he has been holding on to since that night, the last thing she had that did not horrify or encage her. She hands it over in thanks, remarking that "you have returned something to her she had not even realized she had lost so long ago, some faith in people." She takes the lantern one more time, and calling on her magic, summons flame to burn through the remaining ice on the ship, clearing it nearly entirely. Near the mast, you see a lantern ring, stylized like a dragon. Hanging the Beacon of the North there, she again uses it's magic and a massive portal opens before the ship. "Home", she whispers, before handing the lantern over. "There is one more portal for you. It will take you back to Skelg's mansion. He asks you to lock the door before you leave, as he will not be returning there any time soon."

Her words where true, as stepping through the smaller portal returns you to Skelg's mansion, and only a small way back to the grand Lodge, with a rather long story to report.

Ancient Aasimar proverb: If you can't do, teach. If you can't teach, try to at least look pretty. Fail at even that, . . . um, . . . be a Hestram.

I know, right. It kind of makes the Hao Jin Tapestry wankery look like chump change.
