Wulfram returned to the rest of the party and warned them of what he had seen. "There's a winged fey assassin called an ankou, hiding in the branches above the throne; they thrive on fear and suffering!"

He recited a prayer to harden his skin like bark.
Casting Barkskin on himself.

"I guess there's no way to avoid it." She looks at Wendel, and casts Greater Magic Fang on Sia.

Sense Motive on why he wants us to look at the throne: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

"Right then..." says Karla, pouting just a little, then she spins, her white robes swirling and lifting the grass and the dead leaves surrounding her. They spin and coalesce as they do, while, with a flick of the finger, Karla redirects them at Nik'o. As the leaves gather around Nik'o, they stick to her and their brown sheen turns metallic gold.

When the swirl ends, Nik'o looks like a dragon from the far east, covered in gold scales, with horns like a crown, and Karla laughs and smiles, still spinning.

Form of the Exotic Dragon II:

Sovereign Dragon: 30-foot cone of sonic (damage dice are d6s instead of d8s), spell resistance equal to 13 + the spell’s level.
+6 size bonus to your Strength, a +4 size bonus to your Constitution, a +6 natural armor bonus, a fly speed of 90 feet (poor), darkvision with a range of 60 feet, a breath weapon, damage reduction 5/magic, and resistance to one form of energy or some other bonus. You gain one bite attack (2d6), two claw attacks (1d8), a tail slap attack (1d8), and either a gore attack (2d6) if you assume the form of an imperial dragon or two wing attacks (1d6) if you assume the form of a primal dragon. All breath weapons deal 8d8 points of damage unless noted and allow a Reflex save to halve the normal damage. Line breath weapons increase to 80-foot lines and cones increase to 40-foot cones.

Eustoma doesn't think Wendel has any ulterior motive about investigating the throne rather than curiosity.

The ankou continues to watch silently from the canopy. It flexes its claws but makes no move to attack yet.

Rogar sighs, starts summoning earth, and starts walking underneath where the Ankou is, ready to blast it out of the sky as soon as it moves.

"Or it's not real..." replies Karla.

Watching Rogar move, she adds: "We'll know soon enough..."

Rogar Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Ankou Initiative: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15

As Rogar gathers power, the ankou finally springs into action. It makes a pulling motion with its claws, and supernatural darkness cloaks the clearing, plunging it into shadow!

Rogar Perception: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (20) + 25 = 45
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 87

Though he can't see, Rogar's keen senses hear the faint flapping of the fey's wings as it tries to move into position to attack. The dwarf lets fly his kinetic blast, managing to catch the ankou in a lucky strike! The creature shrieks, and hot blood splatters the dwarf before he hears a soft thump nearby. The gloom dissipates as quickly as it appeared, revealing the shredded form of the ankou lying on the ground. Its body seems to be little more than shadowstuff and gossamer, which quickly begins to blow away in the foul breeze...

The ankou wasn't expecting that, either! A bit anticlimactic but oh well! :)

Investigating the throne, Eustoma can feel her blight-scar throbbing painfully. It seems that the throne bears a strong connection to the tree from which it was cut--the tree the dryad Arlantia is bonded to. You might be able to use it as a focus of a tree stride spell to travel to that tree, though doing so would expose you to the Darkblight. There may be more clues on how to do this safely in Naphexi's lair.

Sorry ;) I'm just fairly surprised the Perception check was also a nat 20.

Rogar walks over to the corpse as it dissipates, poking it and seeing if it had anything of note on it. He also turns his senses outwards, feeling for any potential adversaries hidden in the surrounding area.

Perception: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (9) + 25 = 34

The ankou has no possessions. Rogar does not sense any other creatures nearby.

Karla says: ”Only Rogar could have pulled that. Did you just kill the Ankou? I wish I had seen it!”

As she steps through the clearing, she adds: ”We could destroy the tree...”

Blighted foliage—greasy vines, tree branches dripping with black moss, and mushrooms blooming from rotted trunks of a dying orchard—closes in around the narrow pathways here. An ominous hush fills in the gloom.

As you navigate the paths, you spot two plant creatures lurking amid the foliage. Large tendrils ending in tiny claws unfurl from the central stalks of these plant, which rise like serpents ready to strike!

Vines: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Rogar may act before the enemies! Each one is about 30 feet away.

Knowledge (nature) DC 23:
These plants are known as viper vines. A voracious, flesh-eating carnivore, the viper vine has a single enormous bloom arising from a thick, leafy tangle of snake-like vines. When the plant senses the approach of suitable prey through its sensitive, shallowly buried root system, it rises up like an agitated snake and unfurls its brightly colored bloom, an act that releases a cloud of mind-numbing pollen. While stories speaking of the plant’s ability to lure prey into its clutches by virtue of its swaying motion persist, this effect is in fact created by this invisible, odorless pollen cloud.

They are immune to acid damage, but any cold effect induces lethargy in the vines, slowing them.

Male Dwarf Geokineticist 17 HP 143(296)/325; AC 28/20/22 (defensive training) (+2 v goblins, +4 v giants); DR 13/Adamantine; 35% crit/sneak attack negation; Acid Resist 10 Saves +27/+19/+15; +5 init, +28 Per; 5/15 burn, 3/3 Internal Buffer

Rogar's attacks tear apart one of the plants, causing it to sag to the ground. The other one whips its tentacles at the dwarf. One of them hits, and while it barely bothers the kineticist, it does wrap him up tight in a grapple! A sweet smell fills the air as the vine releases its mind-numbing pollen.

A victim that is attacked by the viper vine gets a new saving throw as a free action during each of the vine’s attacks to overcome the effect. This is a mind-affecting effect.

Everybody is up!

Wulfram uttered a word of power to momentarily weaken the plant's grip on Rogar.

"Nasty weeds," Rogar kicks a few of the fallen vines away, "Ah hate things that mess wi' yer mind."

He looks around (with both his eyes and through the ground) for any previous victims of the vines, and if they're humanoid, gives them a quick burial (after, of course, seeing if they have anything valuable), a process that takes mere seconds.

Karla looks at what's left of the vines and realized what had just happened, and what could have happened: "Hard to keep your head in this place. I owe you one!"

She follows the others down the path, casting a last parting glance at the plant, a shiver running up her spine.

"Must say, I'm not used to a forest so hostile to people!", Wulfram remarked. He resumed his flight along the path, casting wary glances at the undergrowth alongside.

Searching the vines, you discover each one contains a partially decomposed corpse of a satyr. There are a few surviving magic items as well, dirty but functioning. One corpse wears a cloak of resistance +3, and the other wears an unfettered shirt.

The forest opens up at the end of the twisting paths. As you approach, you hear a low-pitched chorus of voices singing an odd, repetitive melody in Aklo.

Aklo:
"Our lady in the lake/Mistress of the mired marsh/May our swords to her be true/In this life and far, far beyond."

Wendel listens carefully to the song, and scratches his ears in confusion. "This dedication surprises Wendel, yes-yes-yes. Wendel did not hear that Naphexi called herself the lady in the lake, and Wendel asked many creatures about that evil dragon. This seems odd—yes it does—odd indeed. Wendel recommends caution."

Karla translates: ”Our lady in the lake/Mistress of the mired marsh/May our swords to her be true/In this life and far, far beyond.”

To Wendell: ”You’re sure they speak of Naphexi?"

Wendel shakes his head. "No-no-no, not sure at all. Maybe a different lady in the lake?"

While Rogar went on his scouting mission, Wulfram waited and listened.

Perception: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (3) + 22 = 25

All Wulfram can hear is the repeating chant.

A murky swamp dotted with sharp, moss-covered rocks stagnates in the southeast corner of this sprawling clearing. To the southeast, a waterfall tumbles over a tall outcropping, filling the pool that immediately surrounds it and feeding the swamp beyond. The surrounding swamp and foliage are covered in greasy blight-growths, but the deep pool is a healthy blue-green and seems to have avoided significant contamination.

Rogar can see the singing is coming from four blighted satyrs, wan fey covered in ropes of fungus and patches of mold. They ring the waterfall and seem to be serenading it! They havne't noticed the dwarf yet.

The satyrs are 90 feet away.

Rogar returns and reports in, "What do ye thing? Shoul' we engage? If tha pool hasn't been corrupted an they are trying ta do so, do ye think we shoul' stop them?" he asks.

Karla first feels very concerned about the pond, but then hesitates and replies: "If we're successful, we won't have to worry about those blighted satyrs corrupting a pond, no? I mean, if the whole place wasn't already corrupted, then I would say we ought to do something, but, in fact, we are doing something by addressing the bigger issue, no? Wulfram asked Wendel, "Do you how close we are to Naphexi's lair?"

Silly adventurers, avoiding all of my fun encounters. :P

"It must not be far now. Yes-yes-yes, just a little ways to go," Wendel says.

You give the waterfall a wide berth and push onward through the Blighted Depths, following the stream that the waterfall. empties into. After another couple of hours, the stream here cascades into a wide, marshy canyon choked with ferns and fungus. The hanging stench of stagnation and rot makes breathing a chore. Beyond the jagged outcropping at the canyon’s eastern entrance is a thick, swampy pool of greenish-black morass that gives way to a muddy shore covered in slick algae and slime. Past this foul slough, a rising, rocky shore is dotted with patches of mushrooms the size of trees. Beyond it all, a faux cave of woven wicker stands draped in unearthly growths and fungal strands. Along the canyon’s sides, lashed to the walls with rotten vines and vegetation, are a variety of corpses, some skeletal and others still dripping with fluids.

"This is it! Naphexi's lair! We must be ready for battle!" Wendel whispers. The quickling fidgets nervously and disappears from sight.

You are on a cliff-like outcropping of pockmarked limestone at the slough’s east end, just south of where the river flows into the slough. The outcropping’s surface is flat, and it stands 50 feet above the swamp below. The outcropping’s northern and southern edges are each home to a cluster of mushrooms, with the fungi’s size ranging from a few feet to almost 10 feet tall. Climbing up or down the outcropping requires a successful DC 20 Climb check.
