Eustoma Hadlefoot |
Eustoma pats Wendel on the shoulder. "I know what it's like to lose your family."
"Anyone want to try the ring on? Maybe it will protect them."
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram considered their options; it seemed like experimenting with the magic ring was the most straightforward option. "OK, let's return to the throne, and see if the ring helps us do something with it."
DM Brainiac |
You retrace your steps, heading back through the blighted woods towards the remains of the throne. As you near the waterfall, you can see the twisted satyrs still singing and chanting. This time, though, the image of a beautiful woman appears in the falls for a brief moment. She looks at you with pleading eyes before disappearing once more...
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram studied the image of the woman in the falls, trying to determine if she was some kind of nature spirit.

Eustoma Hadlefoot |
Eustoma rubs her arm at the presence of the blighted satyrs, she begs her companions. "We can't just leave her there. We should help her. Not trust her, but help her. Anything that's not blighted could be an ally."
Know Nature: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram replied to Eustoma, "Let me meditate for a few minutes, and I'll be ready to disrupt whatever the satyrs are doing to the waterfall."
He found a quite spot to meditate with Pele, and memorized a few final spells.
Filling the rest of his open slots with:
1st lvl: Remove Fear
2nd lvl: Barkskin
3rd lvl: Thorny Entanglement
4th lbl: Divine Power
5th lvl: Call Lightning Storm
He told the others, "I'm ready to engage the satyrs from long range — a thousand ft away if need be!"
Thorny Entanglement and Call Lightning Storm have a range of 960 ft at this level.
Rogar Befin |
"Ah need ta be much closer than that. Give me a minute, then ah'll be in position." Rogar says, then slips beneath the ground, charging at full speed forward, trying to get within 100 feet of the spring.
DM Brainiac |
Rogar Stealth: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (18) + 22 = 40
Perception, Distance: 1d20 + 30 - 10 ⇒ (5) + 30 - 10 = 25
Rogar gets to within 100 feet of the satyrs without them being the wiser. The rest of you take up your positions and prepare to launch a surprise attack!
You can all take a surprise round against the satyrs! Let me konw how close each of you want to be to them.
Wulfram Bartos |
How long has it been since the dragon battle? Thinking about spell durations.
Wulfram moved to higher ground, within sight of the corrupting ritual, but far enough away to avoid the satyrs hearing him.
Wulfram's stealth is bad (-4), so he'll need to stay back about 500 ft.
Rogar Befin |
Rogar gets up close to the satyrs, and unleashes a torrent of stone at the closest one, which goes so far off-course it's almost impressive he didn't skewer himself.

Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram called on the powers of nature to attack the satyrs. The plants around the defilers grew thorns and hurled them at their tormentors.
Casting Throny Entanglement (DC 17 Reflex), centered on the satyrs. Attack Bonus: +18
"This spell functions as entangle, except the plants also grow thorns and can fling them up to 15 feet. Any creature that moves within 15 feet of the spell’s area is attacked once on its turn by the animated plants. The plants use your caster level as their base attack bonus and add your spellcasting ability score modifier (Intelligence for witches; Wisdom for druids, rangers, and shamans) to the attack roll. A volley of thorns counts as a thrown weapon and deals 2d6 points of piercing damage on a successful hit. A creature that enters the spell’s area or ends its turn there automatically takes 2d6 points of piercing damage."

Despite being taken by surprise, the satyrs prove surprisingly nimble. All of them dodge the flame strike, and only one is entangled by Wulfram's spell! The fungal creatures bleat angrily as they reach for their greatswords!

Karla Teg |
Ok, form of the dragon and Angelic aspect are off. She would have cast fly on Nik'o, gotten on its back, then cast invisibility on both before moving into position.
Karla asks Nik'o to stay put then pulls from the ground, summoning the pent up rage of the land and give it shape. Long snake-like tentacles rise up from the ground all around the satyrs and pounce on them.

Rogar's first blast shreds apart one satyr, while his follow-up bloodies another one. Wulfram's and Karla's fireballs wreak havoc among the satyrs, and Eustoma finishes off the most wounded creature with a trio of well-placed arrows.
The other two are badly hurt, but fanatic in their rage. The one grabbed by the tentacles breaks free and pushes forward, while the other escapes the entangled area and rushes towards you, screaming in fury!
One enemy moves 25 feet closer, the other one moves 75 feet closer. Everybody may act!

Eustoma only lands one good hit on the rear satyr, which also dodges Wulfram's lightning. Luckily, Rogar is able to pick up the slack, finishing off both blighted fey with his earth blasts!
Each of the four satyrs has a potion of cure serous wounds, +1 greatsword, bracers of armor +3, and a necklace of opals and black dragon scales (1,000 gp each).
With the satyrs slain, a beautiful woman emerges from the waterfall. She has pearlescent skin and long dark hair. Her nudity is barely hidden by a diaphanous, wet shawl.
"You are outsiders to this terrible realm, I see," the watery fey says, her assessing gaze sweeping up and down. "Do you know the horror upon which you’ve stumbled? You are strong—perhaps it’s the horror you seek to defeat. Or perhaps you are agents of the Darkblight. Tell me, which is it?"
If you are sexually attracted to women, you must make a DC 23 Will save or be fascinated by the fey.
Karla Teg |
Karla and Nik'o fly closer. Karla claps her hands, rejoicing at the sight of the fae: "Eustoma, you were right! This is just so incredible!"
As the fae asks them, she replies back, smiling and defiant: "Our nation's misfortunes have brought us here. We have slain the dragon and other horrors. We are not of the Blight. We fight it. We were on our way to the throne when our comrade convinced us to free this part of the Blight from its taint. Tell us, who were those satyrs?"
She wants to ask how her garment holds so perfectly on her skin as well, but guesses that with a bit of practice, she might be able to create a spell that those something similar.
DM Brainiac |
The fey lounges languidly on a nearby rock. "Ghastly creatures, and that was before the Darkblight stole their minds. No, they were useful lackeys. It was fortuitous, really—I was fleeing for my life, and here were those satyrs, bored and playing obnoxious little tunes on their pipes. I simply took advantage of their Darkblight-addled brains and convinced them to protect me. It was all I could think to do to keep myself safe, and for a time, it worked." She sighs, almost wistful for a moment.
"Ah, well, I knew I couldn’t keep them under my thumb forever. I’m only glad it was you who bested them instead of some other blighted beast—there are so many in these depths who’d gladly see a nereid dead. Or worse: infested."

Wulfram flew down to join his comrades, and speak to the nereid. He fought off the urge to stare at the barely clothed woman, forcing himself to think of Rhyna waiting for him back in Longshadow.
He greeted the fey, "Hello, I'm Wulfram. As Karla says, we are here seeking something to help us against the foul Ironfang Legion, which has invaded our lands. I know that the Accressiel Court once ruled these lands. Do you know if anything remains of them?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (20) + 19 = 39
DM Brainiac |
"Mireena," the nereid says as way of introduction. "Sadly, after Arlantia's insurrection, the Accresiel Court is no more. A pity, for they threw the most magnificent parties once upon a time. And none are more sorely missed than Gendowyn. Ah, Gendowyn, the Fangwood's earth goddess." Mireena sighs, practically overcome with sadness. "No, I don’t know anything about what might have become of her. She disappeared long ago, and though many fey have cried out to her for her help, it has never come. I assume this Darkblight has taken her from us for good."
DM Brainiac |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Mireena chuckles darkly and shivers a little, pulling her dripping shawl tightly around her arms. “Dearests, only fools go hunting for their own deaths. Arlantia rules these woods now. The accursed dryad has locked her throne away behind miles of twisting, hungry briar and layers of protective magic. You’ll not find it simply walking the forest’s paths. But I remember her as a sapling, vain and excited, and ever eager to please her queen. She grew Gendowyn’s throne from a cutting of her own tree, and the two still remain bonded—tree and throne. Arlantia’s supplicants still reach her by striding through the throne. Of course, it’s as infested with the Darkblight as anything in these woods; stepping through it infests you with that corruption. If you aren’t one of Arlantia’s servants before you approach her tree, you will be when you arrive.”
Mireena quiets, and a flash of realization crosses her face. With a polite gesture, she excuses herself and steps behind the waterfall. After a brief moment, she reemerges with a small, smooth stone of polished larimar in her hand.
“This is my personal token—an heirloom handed down to me from my mother’s ancestors. When touched, it allows several creatures to enter a tree, as a dryad does, and move into other trees of its kind with just a thought. It is dangerous to use in these blighted woods, and I have little use for it now beyond sentimentality. I don’t know how to protect you from the Darkblight itself, but I do know Naphexi traveled to Arlantia’s side frequently without hardship. If you can find out how the dragon did so, then you may be able to reach Arlantia’s Pestilent Palace. If those hobgoblins could manage it, certainly you can as well.”
Wulfram Bartos |
Wulfram tried to piece together what he knew about the Darkblight, and pondered how to protect against it, particularly when moving through trees as Mireena described.

Wulfram said to the others, "I think we should examine the ring a bit more. I feel it could be the key to using the throne without becoming contaminated. Why don't we make camp for the night?"
The next day, we can attempt new Spellcraft checks on the ring.
