Once disguised as hobgoblins, you teleport a short distance away from the Onyx Citadel's main entrance. Built from a titanic deposit of onyx, the citadel stands atop a large island in the vault’s picturesque lake of water and mercury, rising to a towering 600 feet.

A scintillating barrier of polished crystal cuts off ingress into the citadel. To the west of the sparkling entrance towers the bulk of the citadel, casting a dark shadow on the much smaller gatehouse to the entry’s east.

Peering down from the guard tower are two hobgoblins lead by a hulking minotaur who holds a repeating crossbow. "Halt! Identify yourselves, soldiers!" he calls down to you.

Eustoma stops, and waits for someone who speaks the language to answer the question.

Karla sneers at the minotaur and quickly tries to ensnare him in her magic as she shouts back: "Soldiers!? You have cow sh!t in your eyes, Minotaur? Do you not recognize me? I am the great Oktar, Eyes of Azaersi in this Realm. I am on mission. Stand aside!"

Wulfram waited to see what the response would be to Karla's bluff. We might have to fight our way in!

The minotaur frowns down at Karla, then shakes his head to clear away the effects of her charm spell. "What?!? You use elf magic against me? Who are you really?" he rumbles and narrows his eyes. Suddenly, he steps back and gasps. "You! You slew Lieutenant Kosseruk at the battle of Longshadow! She was the greatest philosopher of my kind! You will pay for your crimes!" He levels his crossbow, and the two hobgoblins beside him raise their bows!

The minotaur unleashes a fusillade of bolts at Karla, striking her four times and taking her down! The hobgoblins fire on Wulfram, but his armor keeps him safe from harm.

The situation took an ugly turn, as the Minotaur peppered Karla with crossbow bolts. Wulfram recited a powerful prayer to restore her health, and tried to shield her with his body.

Casting Heal on Karla, restoring 150 hp. Positioning himself to give Karla cover against the enemies.

Great! Can Karla act on that same round?

Yes, she can.

Karla blinks in and out of death with but a word from Wulfram. Truly the man had become a living relic.

Sitting, she gives the Minotaur an angry look and says: "I tried the nice way for you, but you're right after all. Legion must all go..."

But she decides to raise her defense instead of letting her anger roam free.

Rogar responds not with words, but with what essentially amounted to a bomb, a tightly compacted sphere of metal being flung up at the minotaur, which promptly detonated into a field of razor-sharp fragments.

For good measure, he followed it up with a boulder nearly as large as him directly following it.

Eustoma draws her bow, and fires at one of the hobgoblins.

Rogar's initial blast doesn't get through the minotaur's armor, but the fragments pierce both hobgoblins! His follow-up blast does wound the minotaur, causing him to grunt in pain. Eustoma shoots one of the hobgoblins while Nik'o only manages to hit the minotaur with one claw. Wulfram heals Karla, who protects herself with mirror images.

The enemies focus their fire on Nik'o, trying to take down the big cat that has charged into their midst. She takes several hits from arrows and crossbow bolts!

One of the hobgoblins succumbs to Karla's suggestion. Wulfram's stormbolts injure the trio of enemies and stuns the other hobgoblin. Eustoma focuses her shots on the stunned foe, managing to take him down. Nik'o, Sia, and Rogar all fail to hit the minotaur!

The compelled hobgoblin fires on the minotaur, scoring one hit. The mintoaur snorts in annoyance as it steps back and continues its crossbow bolt barrage. This time, Nik'o's defenses keep her from harm!

The minotaur's luck comes to an end as Rogar smashes him with two precise blasts, the second one a critical hit that crushes him to pulp! Eustoma, Wulfram, and your animal companions are able to make quick work of the hobgoblins thereafter.

The minotaur has +2 chain shirt, +2 distance repeating heavy crossbow with 6 cases of bolts, mwk longsword, belt of physical might +4 (Dex, Con), ring of protection +2, 1,220 gp. Each hobgoblin has +2 breastplate, +1 scimitar, +3 composite longbow (+3 Str) with 40 arrows, amulet of natural armor +1, belt of mighty constitution +2, cloak of resistance +2, ring of protection +2.

"Pfff! That Minotaur almost got me and my Nik'o. You saved me Wulfram! Thank-you-thank-you-thank-you!!!"

And she goes to stroke Nik'o bloodied pelt, eyes gleaming with tears.

"Keeping everyone going is my job; I'm just glad you're both okay!", the shaman replied, blushing. That was a little too close for comfort. He retrieved his healing wand and restored Nik'o to full health.

This assumes that we have no immediate treats, and can spend four minutes healing. I'm trying to saving Healing Hex for potential in-battle use.

Then he surveyed their present position, and considered thier next move.

Karla says: "We still need to get in..."

You retreat a safe distance away from the citadel to tend to your healing needs. It's likely the soldiers will be on alert now, but none of the enemies you fought escaped to tell of your ruse, so the illusory disguises might still work.

Peering at the citadel from the highway leading up to it, Wulfram can see two potential means of entry besides the locked front doors. You could fly back up to the guard house where you fought the minotaur and descend into the courtyard from there. There's also a wide balcony along the near side of the citadel's main structure that you could fly up to or teleport to, though it seems that there are a few hobgoblins there now keeping a watch on the vault below.

"Let's go down from the guard tower. They won't expect us from that direction."

Wulfram agreed with Eustoma, "With luck, there might not be any more guards there. Sounds like a good plan to me."

Wulfram has Overland Flight active.

"Love it!" says Karla as she quickly cast incantations to strengthen herself and her companion.

Spell Turning on Karla (Levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9) and Nik'o (Levels: 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7). Form of the Exotic Dragon II and Angelic Aspect on Nik'o. Angelic Aspect on Karla.

Karla springs silvery wings and her skin takes on a golden paleness, while Nik'o turns into a large dragon seemingly made of silver and gold crystals.

You fly up to the guard tower before descending into the hall below. A dozen massive hooks dangle from iron chains overhead, clinking softly in the breeze. Corpses dressed in the colors of Molthune dangle from these hooks.

As you enter the hall, two of the corpses suddenly stir and look at you with hatred burning in their red, glowing eyes!

The tentacles fail to grasp the tough undead!

Eustoma sighs. "Undead really? They just can't stop from being super evil can they?" She casts Flame Strike.

Rogar struggles to escape the undead's grasp, and even with Karla's grease spell, he can't quite get free. Fortunately, Wulfram, Eustoma, Nik'o, and Sia all converge on the undead, stabbing, shooting, biting and clawing. With the final hit, the creature crumbles to a pile of bones, and the chain unravels from around Rogar.

The second undead creature lashes out at Wulfram, but his defenses hold against its spiked chain!
