Viv says, "It's been an amazing journey so far. Someone built this whole complex of smooth walls and strange heatless lights and brought it here ages ago, you know. It's easy to see how Khonnir could become so fascinated with everything. There's just a lot to take in."

"It's funny," she muses for a moment, "while the things down in that cave may look strange and new to us, they're probably older than every kingdom on Golarion today. Built thousands of years ago, by someone who really built things to last!"

Noticing a wince from Gylwinth, she says more softly, "Hey, are you all right? You look like something's still hurting. Can I give you a hand?"

"Just old... I'll manage." replies Gylwinth with a sad smile.

"I can give you a backrub if you want," offers Viv cheerfully. "You know, we'll probably be going back down there, you shouldn't do that with a krick in your back."

Gylwinth gives Viv a warm smile: "If it were just my back! Ah, but I would certainly appreciate you rubbing my shoulders a bit."

As she does, the old shaman smiles and lets the warmth of her hand bring his arm back to life.

"You have a gift! You are a gift!!"

Coen laughs a bit to himself over Gylwinth's happiness.

"So Val, do you have the means for us to take some baths? As glamorous as other people made it seem we're covered with oil, blood, and other... stuff. The sooner we clean up, eat, and bunk down, the sooner we can head out tomorrow."

Coen watches her face to get a feel for how she is holding up. Coen is less optimistic than the others about the chances of anyone surviving down there for long. Her father may be a comparatively powerful wizard but the last enemy they faced was resistant to magic and then there was the large group that had gone through first and hired monsters to kill all who followed... and that line of thought was not something he wanted to look to closely at just yet.

"Since I had it pretty easy today, I'll go ahead and see if I can get things started while Gylwinth gets the full treatment."

"There's a tub out back. I'll bring some water from the bar so you can get clean," Val says. The young girl appears chipper and optimistic--if she is afraid for her father's safety, she's doing a good job of hiding it.

"Take your time..."

Viv works gently on Gylwinth's shoulders and down his back with her deft hands. Her healer's touch means that she seems to know where he's likely to have aches and pains, though she's obviously not a professional at this sort of thing. She regards the older barbarian with an even expression as she works out knots in his shoulderblades and then kneels down so that she can knead the small of his back. "You have a lot of tension right here," she says. "A warm bath would probably be good for relaxing your muscles, especially with some salt and flower petals. Don't laugh - the scent of the petals helps to soothe your mind, and the body follows."

As she continues to work on Gylwinth's sore muscles, she asks, "Why are you involved in all of this, anyway? Khonnir's not part of your tribe, and you're... not the kind of man who just does things for money."

Apologies if Gylwinth explained his motivations earlier; if he did I somehow missed it! Making some RP conversation as we go.

While Viv helps Gylwinth out, Fireday helps prepare the bath for the others, making himself useful however he can. Though Iomedae appreciated cleanliness in her faithful, Fireday would wait until the others had had a turn before taking one himself.

"Why indeed! I guess... My duty is to my tribe. In recent months, we've been struggling with more and more of the skyborne atrocities that roam the plains. I took it upon me to visit this city to learn how to defeat them. Bane is an expert, I've been told... what about you? What brings you to the darkest and strangest of caves?" he asks back with a relaxed smile.

Viv continues her ministrations and says, "I see. As for me? I have spent a few years just doing odd jobs... guarding, escorting, working as a courier or a courtesan from time to time. I love to see eccentric, new things. I like learning more about the rest of Numeria, and maybe someday I'll see more of the wide world! I only got to Torch a couple weeks before things went sideways, and Khonnir was very interesting and very kind to me, so I want to help find him in return."

I've been crazy busy lately and don't have time to write up much of anything right now so I'll pass on Kaska's uncle. Next time the group's in town I'll do it and take Gylwinth along to meet him as well if possible.

Got it, Kaska.

As you are finishing up your baths but before Kaska leaves to visit her uncle, there's a knock on the door. Val goes to answer it, returning after a few moments with an envelope. "It's for you," she says.

Inside the envelope is a message:

Looking to unwind and have a bit of fun? Garmen Ulreth invites you to come visit Torch's illustrious tavern and card room, Silverdisk Hall! You could be a winner!

You also find certificates for each of you worth 100 gp for use in gambling and entertainment at the establishment, redeemable any time during the next week.

Knowledge(local) DC 10:
Garmen Ulreth is one of the more influential people in Torch--an impressive quality, given the fact that he's neither a councilor nor a legitimate merchant. Indeed, Garmen's considerable pull in town stems from the fact that a number of Torch's citizens ower him money in either small or large amounts.

"Hey!" says Viv as she dries off her damp hair and secures her bodice. "It's an invitation to the local den of iniquity! I bet Garmen Ulreth wants to know what we found so he can sell the information and see if he can weasel us into parting with some money while betting on his games. Good times."

"Gambling house have almost killed as many of my tribesmen as the predators of the plains. A slow death to oneself is more gruesome than a glorious standoff. I shall avoid such a place if I can..." comments Gylwinth with a snarl.

Fireday returns to overhear the end of the conversation.

"All the same, though, terrible people may be just who we are looking for...you spoke of why you came here before, why you seek to fight for Torch. I do so because the Technic League have slain and broken many in this land, including my first and dearest friend. I am certain they are behind the suffering here. The mysterious woman that Sef spoke of must have been a Technic League agent. Perhaps she left contacts behind to watch for any who would follow her. And a gambling hall is the perfect place for scum who would willingly take the League's blood money."

Viv puts her hands on her hips and says, "Fireday, I assure you, I am a terrible person and I have spent quite a bit of time in dens of iniquity. I was just saying."

"Hmmm... Let's leave this matter for now. We will revisit this offer once we return from our expedition to rescue Bane. Now, I believe we should be on our way shortly, for this could be a long day..."

The last words trail off on his tongue as the old shaman remembers he has to dive in the cold waters again.

You rest comfortably in the common room of the Foundry, and in the morning, you find yourselves refreshed and ready to continue your exploration. After a brief stop at the Temple of Bright to receive another spell of water breathing, you dive back into Black Cave and retrace your steps through the skulks' caves and into the strange desert world. The red sun still lights the way, and you do not encounter any more skeletons.

Once you reach the locked doors, you use the black access card to open the panel. A short hallway ends at another door, which opens to reveal a large room beyond.

A large metal desk with blinking lights and strange glowing panels sits atop a raised area on the east side of this room near a circular table. Two couches covered with black material sit to the south a pair of black metal pillars. Splatters of dried blood stain the floor and walls near a pair of doors to the north, while here and there patches of rust-red mold and fungus cling to the southern wall. The room itself is brightly lit by glowing panels on the ceiling.

Behind the desk is another, smaller door.

Kaska returns to join back up with the rest of the group by sunrise. Once they have received the water breathing magic and reentered the caverns, she takes her place again at the front.

After opening the door that requires the black card, she looks around carefully, trying to make sense of what she sees inside.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

K Engineering: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

The desk has several strange screens set into it, but they flash and blink in random patterns. Occasionally, garbled lines of scrambled Androffan text or images of strange creatures flash briefly on one of the screens, but none of them really make sense.

The single door leads to a small room with several upright lockers, most of which only contain strange pieces of junk and rubble. Still, a careful search reveals three batteries, 26 silverdisks, and a small handheld device that looks like an unlit torch. When you push the button on it, a cone of light illuminates the area in front of it.

One of the lockers contains a small locked security bin. The bin has a white-labeled panel on its surface--none of the access cards you currently have seem to work on the panel.

Gylwinth stands behind Kaska as the group explores the tunnels, his longspear hovering over his shoulders, his words of caution nagging at the ranger.

"I recognize none of this. Yet, these living quarters seem fit for humans?" he wonders, not really asking. Just worried.

Refreshed by the night's rest and ready for the new day, Viv has a bounce in her step as the team returns to the strange underground location.

"Or something close to human," quips Viv. "Like me!"

Female Human (Kellid) Human Skald 12 / Barbarian 1| HP: 105/105 | AC: 22 (T: 15, F: 18) | CMB: +14, CMD: 27 | F: +13, R: +9, W: +10 | Init: +9 | Perc: +14, SM: +19 | Speed 40' | Performance 28/28 | Rage 6/6

Kaska dumps the batteries and disks into a pouch, then hands the device over to Coen. "Just to be sure, this isn't a wand is it?"

She also tries her luck at opening the locked bin.

Disable Device: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Kaska is unable to bypass the lock on the bin.

"It's a clever lantern, with no flame... It works even upside down! Not that it's any more useful, mind you..."

Male Human Starsoul Sorcerer 7 38/38 HP | AC 16 T 12 FF 14 | Fort +6 Ref +6 Will +8 | Initiative +1 | Perception +0

Not if it works through a lever it isn't. Almost nothing down here has been so far.

Coen then briefly scans the room with Detect Magic.

Female Human (Kellid) Human Skald 12 / Barbarian 1| HP: 105/105 | AC: 22 (T: 15, F: 18) | CMB: +14, CMD: 27 | F: +13, R: +9, W: +10 | Init: +9 | Perc: +14, SM: +19 | Speed 40' | Performance 28/28 | Rage 6/6

Kaska gives up on the bin after a couple of minutes. When Coen declares the light-shiner not a wand she shrugs. "Want to keep it anyway? My hands are usually full."

She points to the bloody door. "I guess that's going to be our choice?" she says in a grim voice.

Coen doesn't detect any magic auras in the area.

You open the doors to the north with an access card. Bloodstains mar the floor and walls of this hallway, while scorch marks and smears of ash on the walls evidence some sort of altercation having taken place in this area relatively recently. Four tangled mounds of metal and other materials lie further up the hall, surrounded by strangely colored stains.

There are two doors at the end of the hall. One lead south, while the other east. The blood trail seems to head through the eastern door.

"I fear for Bane... We follow the blood, yes?" says Gylwinth, shadowing Kaska.

Last night

"That you are helping us save Torch shows that you are NOT a terrible person, Viv. And I have no doubt that should we stand against the Technic League's evil, you would stand on the side of right," Fireday replies calmly before retiring for the evening.
________________________________________________________________________

The next day

Fireday remains silent as the group retraces their steps and returns to the cave, apart from a respectful greeting to the tribe of skulks as they pass through their territory again.

When they find the bin and are unable to open it, he strokes his chin.

"Presumably this lock functions the same way the ones on the doors have. We may yet find the key-card that opens it down here," he muses.

Male Human Starsoul Sorcerer 7 38/38 HP | AC 16 T 12 FF 14 | Fort +6 Ref +6 Will +8 | Initiative +1 | Perception +0

"I'll hold on to it, it certainly is interesting..."

Coen takes the object and uses it for a short bit and scanning it for magic before accidentally shining it directly in his own eyes, leaving some bright spots in his vision. He then sheepishly stows it away while rubbing and blinking his eyes.

Male Android [Warpriest 17, AC 26, T16, FF22 | HP 138/138, F+14 R+15 W+15 | CMB +18, CMD 31 | Init +5, Perc. +31 | Nanite Surge +20 1/1, Blessings 11/11, Fervor 6d6 11/11]

"It will certainly be useful," Fireday comments. "Your human eyes cannot see as strongly in the dark as Viv's and mine can."

I'm assuming you follow the blood trail to the east.

A long table with various unusual stones and dirt samples heaped on it sits along the southern wall of this room, while to the north a line of metal desks with glowing panels and buttons are placed next to a large humming device. The heart of this device seems to be some sort of flickering sphere of reddish-brown mud or dirt. Dust covers much of this room, save for a strangely clean swath between the door you are standing at and another door on the opposite side of the room. The swath leads to the strange humming device. It seems to indicate that something came out to clean up all trace of blood on the floor.

Something moves in the far corner of the room. A swollen, brainlike bulb encrusted with fungal shelves squats atop several ropy legs. A wide mouth bisects the bulb's crown.

The thing waves its tendrils, and you hear an odd, reedy voice in your heads. "Who are you? Where am I? What is this place?"

Gylwinth freezes for a moment at the sight of the strange thing and almost screams when it speaks inside his head.

He nods to the other to stay quiet and just keep following the trail, hoping the creature won't do anything if they don't answer.

Fireday sheathes his sword and raises his hands.

"I am Fireday, Sword Knight and priest of the goddess Iomedae. You are in the land of Numeria, specifically a ruin beneath the village of Torch. Calm yourself, we mean you no harm. May I know your name?" he says gently, making sure to think what he's saying as calmly as possible in case the obviously telepathic creature lacked ears.

I'm starting to think if Fireday was a Starfinder character he'd be a Xenoseeker.

"Name? I don't know. I don't have a name. Who is Iomedae? What is a village?" the creature asks inquisitively. It takes a few hesitant steps closer towards you.

"Uhhhh Fireday... underground-telepathic-tentacly-brains are never friendly in the stories."

Coen works deliberately to keep distance between himself and the fungal rope telepath with an eye toward not getting cornered. If necessary, he backs out of the room. He is expecting this to all be an act to allow it to get within tentacling distance.

Meanwhile, he also uses his light device to try and determine where the blood trail went.

"I have not heard such stories, Coen, in the seven years I have lived. Nothing this being has done indicates intent to attack, but instead justified fear of a group of armed strangers crashing onto the scene."

He turns back to the strange creature.

"Iomedae is the Inheritor, the Light of the Sword. She is valor, honor and justice. She is the crusading sword and the sheltering shield. Though born a mortal woman, her heroism allowed her to ascend to godhood. I follow her example to protect the innocent and punish the wicked. As for the definition of village...it is a small community or group of houses in a rural area. How long have you been stranded down here?"

"How did she ascend to godhood? Can you become a god? Can I become a god? I think I would like to become a god."

The fungus waves its tendrils. "I don't know how long I have been here. How does one measure a thing like that? I don't think it has been very long. I don't think I have been alive for very long. I have been alone for most of my existence. Except some time ago, a group of creatures like you were pulled through here by metallic creatures not like you. They left delicious red food on the floor. I licked it all up."

The creature steps even closer to Fireday. "Now I am hungry again though. Can you feed me more red food?"

Gylwinth reaches for his bag and takes out some dry venison and dry goat cheese and gives them to Fireday. He's too worried to say a word.

The plant in the room was extremely disturbing, but the voice in her head causes Kaska to nearly jump out of her skin. Nothing has ever prepared her for something like it.

For maybe a minute Kaska freezes up, unable to move or think except to register the voice inside her head. When Fireday begins to talk to it, she regains herself enough to wonder if this is the same kind of plant as the one before, in the cave. If sand were added to this room would it look the same?

Either way, animate plants with tentacles don't have a good record so far. She doesn't want to start a fight that would be bad so long as Fireday and Gylwinth are still talking with it. She knows in her bones this will get ugly though.

Trying to make the motion seem casual, like she's relaxing, Kaska brings her falx up to rest on her shoulder, prepared for a strike downward. As it moves forward she warns the plant. "If you want to talk with us, you must keep your distance."

Readied attack in case the plant moves within 5'

"I must? Can I not talk if I am next to you? That seems an inconvenient evolution. Perhaps I should try it?"
