Yuuwa awakes in her hung hammock, mumbling, "thats where birds usually are..." She cocks one eye open to watch Torden and Origen stumble about for any obvious threat. Surprise round...

Torden, while calling out to wake everyone, prepares to fling a dagger at the fast moving creature if it swoops down at him.

The flying creature moves forward quickly, angling toward the camp.

Initiative Rolls:

Yuuwa, Origen, Others on a Perception check DC 15:
You see a "bird" about as big as you are flying down, with bat-like leathery wings spread wide as it darts in straight at Torden. It has a large pointed skull with deep depressions in it. It has larger front teeth, but also several rows of smaller sharp teeth exposed.

    Knowledge (Nature) DC 11:
This is a dimorphodon! It is a medium sized flying lizard! It's as big as you. This is what Sasha was looking for an egg from.

    Knowledge (Nature) DC 16:
The dimorphodon is a robust pterosaur with a distinctively large skull—yet numerous hollows in the skull keep the creature’s weight rather low and allow it greater agility. The dimorphodon’s jaws contain two separate rows of differently shaped teeth: several larger fangs near the front (which are used to grip prey and inject poison) and a much larger number of smaller, sharp teeth along the rest of the jaw (used to cut through flesh). This unusual combination of different teeth is why in some areas the dimorphodon is known as the “fangbird” or the “vampire lizard,” although they don’t actually drink blood. Dimorphodons normally feed on fish, small reptiles, and birds, but when particularly hungry, flocks of these creatures have been known to gang up on larger prey, swooping in to bite and then retreating to watch from nearby cliff ledges or tree branches while the victim slowly succumbs to the poison. Once the creature is rendered helpless, the flock descends to eat its victim alive. Dimorphodons are particularly easy to train, and they’re often used as guardians by local tribes or kept as exotic pets in larger cities.

Sorry for the hiccup. Perception checks are free for everyone. Yuuwa, lead us off if you please. Torden, your held action is coming up. I will insert it in the flow.

Spying the reptilian "bird," he figures ranged weapons will probably work best and grabs his bow and quiver. He hastily slings the latter and draws an arrow so he can nock it and take aim on the beast. At the same time, he seeks cover behind whatever tree or shrub might best hide him.

I shall make a study of having a smoother transition into combat. Thank you for being patient as I have still more to learn after all these years. :-)

Yuuwa brings up a good point. I hadn't thought of putting the perception check in a spoiler like that, and so I did so after she rolled. Unless I call for a separate check, please use what you have rolled if it is in the same scene or round.

Yuuwa, offering up obscenities to her deity, launches an icicle at the incoming beast. It takes the flying ice dagger in the shoulder, as it spreads its wings to come in for a bite attack on Torden.

The dimorphodon covers the last twenty feet to Torden, and brings it's wicked teeth to bear. It bites Torden deeply on the arm, and pulls away, ripping some flesh, as it continues on past Torden another ten feet. Greenish liquid drips from its teeth, as well as Torden's wound.

    Torden:
  • You take 8 HP damage, bringing you down to 7/15 HP, and please make a Fort Save DC 12, or take 1d2 ⇒ 1 strength damage.
  • In a surprise round, you get 1 standard or move. You drew your daggers, so your attack is your round 1 standard, and do you have a move action for me?
  • Torden launches one of his daggers at the thing. It sinks deeply up to the hilt in the creatures back. It roars, but continues on an arc around the clearing.

Jonagher quickly moves to a concealed and covered position near the edge of the clearing. He has a clear shot at the beast as it continues to wing its way around the camp.

    DM's Eyes Only:

    • Dimorphodon: 2/11 HP; AC 14, T13, FF 11
    • Torden: 7/15 HP; AC 15, T11, FF14
    • Dimorphodon's Fly check from Yuuwa's hit: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 DC 10
    • Dimorphodon's Fly check from Torden's hit: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 DC 10
    • Diamorphodon's attack vs. Torden: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 vs. AC 15
    • Damage, if applicable: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 plus poison Fort DC 12

    Round 1:

    • Yuuwa [acted]
    • Flying Creature [acted]

Origen looks at the creature as it wheels around. "Just a little closer," he mutters, quickly moving to stand next to Isandril.

    "Over here, Torden!"

Standard action: Ready an acidic ray for the first dimorphodon that flies within 30' range. Alternatively, if the one that attacked Torden is still in range now, he'll attack.
Move action: Move next to Isandril. I'd like the little creatures to have a nice fighter AoO if they fly-by.

    Ranged touch attack (if necessary): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 minus any penalties for darkness.
    Damage (if necessary): 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
    Concealment (if necessary): 1d100 ⇒ 19
    Perception (if necessary): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 minus any penalties for darkness.
EDIT: Bummer. Under 20%, so if it has concealment, Origen is a sad sorceror.

Opening his eyes, Isandril quickly stands up and directs his gaze towards the sky, looking for the flying creature. In one fluid motion, he unsheathes one of his short swords with his right hand, while his left is already pulled back and ready to throw a dagger at the 'bird'.

    Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

    Round 1

Between his standing up and unsheathing his weapons, Isandril should be done for the round. If, however, he can attack the beastie, he throws his dagger at it (he is not actively fighting with two weapons, simply holding his sword, so not really sure if the -2 penalty for two-weapon fighting applies to the thrown dagger; if it does, please adjust accordingly).

    Ranged attack (dagger) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
    Damage (piercing) 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

If he cannot attack this round, please use this action as his standard action for round 2 if the creature is still alive.

Origen, their is sufficient light to preclude a roll to hit within concealment...<read: I forgot about it, so this one is a freebie for you guys for the fight.>

Isandril, you wouldn't be penalized for hold a torch, so I see no reason you should be penalized in this case.

Isandril, I am reading your post as this:

    • move action: stand from prone
    • free action: draw weapons due to base attack bonus being greater than +1
    • standard action: throw dagger.

Isandril launches a dagger at the flying lizard as it sails past, missing it barely, and his dagger plants itself in a tree on the opposite side of the clearing. Attack missed.

Jonagher moves to the edge of the clearing.

Origen launches a familiar acidic ray at the beast, aiming just in front of it as it passes where Isandril made an attempt to attack it. The ray slams into the beast, and burns a hole into its side.

With a screech, it slams into the trees at the far end of the clearing. It is having difficulty breathing, clearly taking its last breaths, as blood pours out of its wounds. It is dying.

You do detect poison coursing through Torden's aura, but he does not seem to be suffering from any ill effect upon his humors. You do detect poison, but he made his save, so no effect. It will wear off by morning.

    Origen:
You get the distinct feeling of being watched, but can detect no other presence near or around the camp. As dawn comes, you spot a dead monkey corpse in the bushes near where you were standing when the feeling came over you. It is drained of blood.

    Yuuwa:
  • Your healing ministrations go a long way toward patching Torden up. He is near or at a full bill of health by the end of your examinations and healings.
  • As you call upon Gozreh, you detect no poisons within the aura of the corpse. While the taste may be unknown, you will certainly not suffer any poisonous humors from consuming this animal.

Not quite vertical cliffs, these slopes host numerous scraggly plants and a number of hanging vines. It is a DC 10 climb check to scramble up or down either steep slope.

"Red sky in morning, ranger's warning," the elf mutters almost to himself, a half-remembered phrase coming to him. "The weather is going to change," Isandril offers as he looks at the red morning sky, "and not for the better." He smiles. "Never fear though, I am certain I will be able to take care of finding enough food so that we do not need to use up our own supplies if it comes to that. And there are some ways to make bad weather feel... well, less bad actually."

As they move along, the warrior-turned-tracker makes a motion for the ones behind him to stop as he calls out to Jonagher in as low a voice as he can. "There is a trap over there, where that vine seems to run up the ridge," he says, hopefully before the rogue accidentally sets it off. As he looks around for any other nasty surprises, he finds one sure enough.

"Up there," he simply says, turning his head and eyes in an attempt to signal to the others to follow his example and look towards the hilltop and a hidden blind, its occupant watching the group.

If it comes to it, Isandril will be able to forage food and provide a +2 bonus on Fortitude saves against extreme weather.

As far as marching order goes, Origen has the right of it. Jonagher, then Isandril a few feet behind him, then the rest of the group. However, I am not sure of the distance between them. Perhaps 10-20 feet between Jonagher and Isandril and then between Isandril and the rest? Which would make the trap a bit of a problem if Isandril sees it first and not Jonagher.

Got Isandril's surprise round action, waiting on Torden and Yuuwa. We have entered combat rounds, so be advised.

If all goes well, I should be able to get on from work tomorrow at 0900 GMT, if Torden and Yuuwa have not checked in by then, I shall NPC their actions.

Torden then begins to chant slowly and then suddenly burst out in a roar.

    MAP Link

On the map, the green area represents the cliff face. It is not that wide, but I flattened the map to reduce the need for the Pythagorean theorem. It is a Climb check DC 10 to get up to where the ambusher is. In the surprise round, Isandril pointed out that there is someone up there. It is a perception check DC 30 to detect where.

    Torden:
The range to target is roughly 70 ft depending on how you count it. The ambusher is located in square W11.

    Torden, Isandril, Jonagher, Yuuwa:
There is an ambusher up there on the ridge top, they are located in square W11. Once Origen makes the check, or the amubsher attacks, I will put it on the map.

Isandril draws weapons, and calls out the two dangers to the group, the trap and that someone was up on the ridge. Perception check DC 14 to know where.

Yuuwa draws her weapons, and prepares to move to protect Origen.

Torden draws his weapons and looks to the ridgelines.

    need Round 1 actions please.

You may attempt another perception check in round 1 if you like, I just used the morning perception checks to make things easier.

    Round 1
Isandril sheathes his swords as he moves deftly up the ridge wall. He barely uses handholds, seemingly dancing up the steep incline. He easily makes it to the top.

As he does so, a javelin comes sailing out of the blind at him. It grazes Isandril's thigh, leaving a gash in his leg. Attack successful

    Isandril:
    -6 HP, 11/17

Yuuwa, having seen the blind earlier, shouts to Gozreh and launches an icy bolt into the camouflaged area. A deep thud resounds from within.

    Yuuwa:
You made the perception check earlier. That was for the folks who didn't. Good job on the attack!

    Isandril:
You notice that the icy bolt knocked the cannibal out of the back of the blind. He is nearly naked, a ragged loincloth of what looks to be human skin is his only clothing. He had red swirling patterns drawn about his body, and has a nearly shaved head. As he yelps in pain, you do notice that his teeth are pointed, almost like a sharks. He has a sizable icicle sticking out of his shoulder.

Origen brings out his crossbow, and starts to load it.

Jonagher feels the wind, and launches his arrow up into the hiding spot. There is another deep thud, followed by a blood curdling scream as the arrow finds its home.

    Isandril:
You watch as the cannibal turns to flee, and suddenly an arrow sprouts from his lower back. He drops to the jungle floor, screaming before he just drops unconscious.

Minor Retcon, you guys are on the west side of the trail. I originally envisioned the east side...but that is not the case.

    Jonagher:
You examine the trap thoroughly, and can tell that this "station" is designed to set off the trap manually. It also allows the person in the blind to pull the victim up the hill quite easily. The blind grants you a +8 bonus to stealth, the trap can still work on its own, but you have the ability to trigger it against anyone trying to disarm it as a free action. As a full round action, you may pull the target up the slope at 10 feet per turn. You have full cover from the trail while doing so. Great line, by the way! You may also attempt to disable this trap to take its parts to use in trap-making elsewhere if you so choose. Let me know, cause I have some great ideas on how to work this.

Torden makes it up the hill in due time.

    Yuuwa:
The cry of pain was from the cannibal being shifted. It was more an involuntary exhalation. He is still fully unconscious when you see him, and when you go see to Isandril. You doubt that he would wake naturally anytime soon. Also, describe to me this moral dilemma that Yuuwa faces?

I fully support any initiatives that you, the players, are willing to put forth. But it is my duty to remind you that the cannibal is in fact unconscious, still.

This falls under some of the more gruesome horror stories told amongst sailors and former slaves. Naturally she heard plenty, and is a standard held belief. On one hand the information could save the lives; on the other, a possible fall from grace, shame over the compromise of personal ethics, and the whisper/rumor mill that she condoned and facilitated these methods. Otherwise she would have no qualms about NOT providing healing magic, it is not an obligation (of Gozreh nor her personal alignment as she sees it) especially in a potentially hostile situation.
