Male Why's it always got to be that way? DM 14

Gelik watches you all with sudden intensity when the wayfinder is mentioned.

Perception check DC 15:
Gelik for the first time today, suddenly shuts up and watches intently when the group mentions it's ties to the Pathfinder Society.

Sorry, I am at work. I will limp along until I can post some more this evening around 1600.

Torden sits quietly listening to the group after his recommendation for rest. As he observes the other castaways--those he hasn't had the pleasure of standing with in battle, he becomes more and more wary.

He casually makes his way over to Origin.

"Mr. Leanthris," he whispers, "I think we should make sure that one of our group is on each watch. I also noticed that the gnome, who heretofore has seemed aloof from the rest of us, seems interested in the discussion of the Pathfinders. Could be a positive reaction, but maybe not."

Keep an eye on him."

Origen nods, but avoids looking at the gnome. He replies in a louder voice, "You're right, Torden. Let's set up some watches for the night."

A suggestion: Three watch shifts, with Torden, Jonagher, and Sasha (if willing); Isandril, Yuuwa, and Jask (if willing); Origen, Bran, and Frik? Watches of three may be overkill, but we don't know what is drumming.

"Well Bran, it would seem we are to wait for another time for our duel," Isandril says after Origen has spoken of the need to set up night watches. "Between the rain and the need to stay alert for a few hours into the night, exerting ourselves is probably not a very good idea at the moment."

Watch shifts sound fine to me.

Male Dwarf Bard/3

"That watch sounds fine indeed. I had a short snooze, so I'm prime for the first watch." Torden looks to Sasha, who he's noticed is fidgety, but little else.

"I'm confident in Mr. Witt's watch skills," Torden whispers to Origin. "And that might allow me to get to know a bit more about Sasha."

"Mid-watch it is. I'll hang my hammock and catch what sleep I can until then. Torden, please wake me up a wee bit earlier so I may provide Gozreh respects for the new day without interfering with my watch." She pulls out a tightly wrapped bundle of canvas, fine netting and braided line from her backpack. Walking over to the two trees she called dibs on earlier (much to the curious disinterest of others) and a quick snap of her wrist, the hammock unrolls. In a few short minutes, the hammock hangs suspended, with Yuuwa within, eyes closed. Her chain shirt and related gear at the base of tree nearest her head.

Yeah, I know the endurance feat says she can sleep in armor. Doesn't mean she wants to. And shipboard life very quickly acclimates you to sleeping and eating when you can; because there are always interruptions and not be another chance until next watch relief.

Sadly, Torden soon realizes Jonagher's 'watch skills' seem far more focused on Sasha than anything else. The dwarf likely finds he has to do more of the actual keeping watch over the camp, while the half-elf practices his own social skills on the intriguing redhead.

Yes. Apparently, our Mr. Witt has quite the eye for the ladies. The attractive, fidgety ones, at least.

The night passes with little incident. Various watches are watched, Yuuwa makes funny noises while she sleeps.

You are not too far from the beach, and can still see the water. As the sun sets, and the night deepens, the waves on the shores of the Shiv become infused with an eerie greenish radiance, almost as if the surf were glowing.

Knowledge (nature) check: DC 20:
You surmise that this eerie green flow is a natural phenomenon caused by phosphorescent algae and plankton in the water.

Anyone who has a night watch:
Though it is at a distance, you can tell that there is something moving in the surf. It is a distance from the shore to where you are, but you could swear that there is movement there...and it is not water.

Torden:
You’re back aboard the Jenivere, bent over the railing being seasick. After your latest bout of retching, you slump back and see the rest of the passengers and crew are on deck as well, all of them sick save for the captain and the quiet Varisian scholar Ieana. She whispers in the captain’s ear, then gives him a kiss on the cheek. At that point the captain holds up a wooden soup spoon, and you realize that you’re holding one as well. Everyone has a spoon. The ship is sinking, and the only way to stop it is to bail out the hold with your spoon! You work feverishly, but the waters keep rushing in. Just before you wake, you can see monstrous things with pincers in the water trying to claw their way into the ship...

Isandril:
As you are on watch, your sharp elven eyes are able to detect movement in the bushes not far from the edge of the clearing. As you watch more, a goat steps out of the bushes, and watches you for what seems an eternity. It finally bleats, and runs off into the jungle, disappearing quickly.

  • Jask Derindi: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
  • Sasha Nevah: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Aerys, Gelik, and Ishirou start the day with stretching, and waking up noises in the case of Gelik.

As soon as Aerys gets up, she starts to look about for a drink.

Jask, still overwhelmed from yesterday's occurrences, seems dumbfounded by his new luck.

Sasha, after stretching when she woke up, seems nervous and skittish more so than usual this morning.

In the interest of plot progression, here is a proposed schedule. If you don't like it, say what you want to do instead, but I recommend at least one person in each role so that we know what skill checks are required.

    Defender: Jonagher Witt and Sasha.

    Medic: Frik.

    Guard: Origen, Yuuwa.

    Entertainer: Torden.

    Hunter: Jask, Bran, Isandril.

We should try to bury Cookie and the First Mate too. In a hot climate, we'll be sorry if we don't do it soon.

Interesting point, I am not sure those assigned to be hunters need to make survival checks, as it is an all day thing. Once you guys break away from camp to go exploring, then there are Survival rolls to gather food on the wing as it were.

Origen watches Sasha rush into the tent. "Sorry, Jonagher. Maybe she'll feel better later."

    Later
Origen spends the day watching the nearby jungle for trouble. But because he's more worried now that the other passengers will break down, he tries to put the best face on things.

150 yards away is fine with Origen. I move that we have Torden make all base Diplomacy rolls, as his modifier is the highest. Failure by more than five leads to bad consequences, so we need to Aid Another to get each roll up as high as possible.

    Diplomacy (Aid Another, Gelik) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
    Diplomacy (Aid Another, Ishirou) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
    Diplomacy (Aid Another, Aerys) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Does endure elements provide any bonuses on checks?

Yuuwa shakes her head over her attempt at talking to Sasha, then watching her flee into the tent. "Learn from your failures and move on." She mumbles to herself. She turns to the task of casting Endure Elements upon Jonagher, Isandril and Bran. "There. That should keep you comfortable until this time tomorrow. If nothing else, you'll sleep without sweating...

She looks once again at the tent where Sasha is cooing softly to herself. "Aye, Origen, you've the right of it. My skills are not diplomancy, I've been raised in a strict seafaring environment. Didn't matter what mood you were in, you still had to perform your assigned tasks. I'll help around the camp, until we can get a small party to comb the beach with me. I hope the men can manage a successful hunt."

    Diplomacy (Aid Another, Gelik) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
    Diplomacy (Aid Another, Ishirou)1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
    Diplomacy (Aid Another, Aerys) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Isandril moves through the camp, approaching the various passengers and checking up on them, showing a genuine interest in their well-being and making sure food rations and water are appropriately divided to them. He tries to reassure them that, between the various more adventurous castaways, no harm will come to them and they will not be making a permanent home of this place.

    Diplomacy (Aid Another) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 [Gelik]
    Diplomacy (Aid Another) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 [Ishirou]
    Diplomacy (Aid Another) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 [Aerys]

As far as camp roles are concerned, I believe Torden was to take up the role of Entertainer and Jonagher the role of Defender. Also, Bran and Isandril have both volunteered to be Hunters. That is, unless something has changed.

If Jask has the Hunter role covered, however, and there is no need for others to assume the same role, Isandril will be joining Yuuwa in a search of the beach. In that case, here is the appropriate Perception roll.

    Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Wow! Look at those rolls! Too bad they are Aid Another checks, otherwise we might just have been able to shift the people's moods... Ah, well! :-P

    Pretty amazing rolls, Isandril.

"Sounds good. I hope that you can salvage something more from the wreck."

Origen thinks for a moment. "Yuuwa, do you think that it would be a good idea to leave a message in the sand with rocks for anyone that tries to salvage the beach or ship? It would steer them to us if they come back as the First Mate did."

He mutters, "Of course, it'd also steer Captain Kovack or any hostile natives to us. Your call."

    Diplomacy 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15[Aerys]

Torden spends his time going about the camp talking to the others, doing his best to cheer them up and get them on board with the group's efforts.
He tries not to press anyone, making sure they are comfortable and offering words of encouragement where he can.

Unfortunately he finds that Aerys is still far to obsessed with the drink. He worries that extreme measures might have to be taken to shake her of her addiction.

    Spoiler:

Nice. Two more productive characters will help us a lot, Torden.

Maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't that add be +7 base +2 for Yuuwa and +2 for Isandril? With the 10 that Torden rolled, it would bring it up to the 21 that we need.

    Great rolls guys!

I added up the totals, and as a group so far you guys rolled:

    • Aerys: 26
    • Gelik: 32
    • Ishirou: 22

After the group moves about, generally cheering up everyone and getting them to stop focusing on their current plight, Aerys approaches Torden. She seems naucious from lack of drink, her hands shake, and she seems really tired.

"You and your fellow memebers speak truth. Though I am still feeling under the weather, I cannot in good conscience let you do all the work of keeping me alive. In that vein, I would like to volunteer to serve here as either a guard, I do have extensive combat training, or I am quite skilled with poetry, and can perhaps use this to assist in keeping everyone's spirits up."

She volunteers to be either a guard or an entertainer.

Not to be outdone, Gelik stands as tall as his short frame allows on a nearby downed palm tree.

"I shall not be upstaged by milady Marinade here! I too can assist. I have a quick wit and a sharp eye for comedy, or if my entertainments are not to your liking, I can certainly serve in the more academic capacity of a medic. I do have classical training."

He volunteers to be either an entertainer or a medic.

Moving up to the group, Ishirou clears his throat and looks about you all with a grim look to his eyes.

"I have no jokes to tell, or medical knowledge to speak of, I cannot help that way. I know the way of the blade. I can keep watch, or I can protect the camp."

He volunteers to be either a defender, or a guard.

Origen, to my knowledge the Endure elements does not assist on any checks, but it keeps you from having to make the check for heat dangers at all.

All that is left is to get Sasha out of her depression, and then you guys could conceivably get the camp roles all covered by the NPC's and you guys go out and explore, returning to the safety of camp when you needed it.

If I might make a recommendation, we could assign Aerys as a guard, Gelik as an entertainer, Ishirou as a defender, Jask as a hunter and use Frik as the camp medic...that way, we'll have five primary roles covered with NPCs, thereby freeing the rest of us to explore the island (and adventure). And, of course, part of the adventure lies in Jonagher getting through to Sasha so she too will become a productive member of society. :-)

Yes, I am sure that is all Jonagher has in mind concerning Sasha. *Snickers*

As for the various roles in relation to the NPCs, I agree with Neil/Jonagher as well.

Fair enough. I thought it might help with hunting in the hot part of the day, but if we need to make heat rolls, avoiding them is the substantial benefit.

I also concur with Jonagher's proposal, but we may want to keep at least a second person on the hunter role. Per DM Berwick's initial post on roles, each hunter can only get food for eight Medium creatures. If we have two successful hunters, we can start adding the surplus to our food reserves (DM Berwick?).

Certainly. There are 11 of you, so if you had two hunters that would put you up 5 people's worth of food for the day. The food won't last horribly long, as things like refrigeration are not available, but that certainly will hold for a little bit. I am not too concerned about the particulars. This is not so much a story about starvation.

Bran watches all of this with a somewhat detached sense of caring and irritation.
When did it become our responsibility to care for these people? The longer we delay, the further the crazy ass captain and his wench get from us!

He keeps this to himself and instead just leans against a tree and waits for everyone to take their role so he and his companions can be about what's really important.

Postmonster 2 for 3. When does Postmonster hunting season start again? Oooohhh I'll get you yet you wascally postmonstewe!

Yuuwa pads over to her backpack, pulls out another tightly wrapped but smaller bundle and a small pouch. She grins and says to no one in particular, "Well despite being marooned, they were very conscientous about making sure our gear was all here. That involved a whole lotta extra effort. I am very curious about the motive now." She unrolls the bundle to reveal a fishing net. She starts to check the netting knots and attaching weights, pulled from the pouch, to the fringes. "Never had monkey meat, not sure if the men are up to chasing the critters through the trees to even bring something back, but I do know there's fish to be had. And perhaps monkey meat is not to everyone's liking."
She glances around the camp and counts idle hands. "Bran, Just cuz I hung my hammock on the tree doesn't mean the tree needs extra support, take Aeryis and pick up dead wood. We'll need it to dry/smoke the fish. Ishirou, please help me check the knots. I'd like a strong arm to protect my back from the SeaScorpions whilst I net a school of fish."
Yuuwa makes small talk regarding use and care of the net but does not pry. Her purpose is to keep everyone productive not play diplomat and she puts her words to action.

"Maybe we'll have more time to begin exploring later." Origen follows Yuuwa's lead and starts patrolling around the camp, keeping his eyes open for any threats.

Because we have a lot of NPC help now, I propose working for the morning to make sure that the volunteers know what they're doing, then going as a group to follow up on the adventure plot ends (starting with Yuuwa's beachcombing and then looking for the crew). Two characters doing a task for half-days may add up to a whole person-day, but even if they don't, I'm not sure that the PCs would want to go off until they made sure that the camp was in competent hands.

Alternatively, we can just do the original plan, see what the tasks do/require, and then have the party go to adventure as a group tomorrow. In the meantime, Yuuwa and a companion (Bran?) will check the beach for salvage.
