Clouseau was a great man, very misunderstood. Good luck!

The rest of this post is all about Shimye-Magalla, spoiler'd for length, since it's a topic of very narrow interest. I have Thursdays off, so I figured that I'd explain why Ms. Zadrian's list of deities held no interest for Dasiji, even though he worships Shimye-Magalla, who is considered by Avistanis to be a janiform deity of Gozreh and Desna.

Shimye-Magalla:
I've given this deity a lot of thought and research, because at one time I was considering making a Bonuwat (Ijo) cleric. (I still might someday.) She isn't statted out in any official product, so there's a lot of leeway. Here's one view.

James Jacobs wrote:

As a strange sort of combination of Desna and Gozreh, Shimye-Magalla is not actually one entity. It is, in fact, Desna and Gozreh. Worshipers of Shimye-Magalla can thus choose from the domains granted by Desna OR those granted by Gozreh.

However, if that messes with the admittedly pleasing to the OCD minded setup of every deity offering 5 domains, I would say that Shimye-Magalla would grant the following since they represent the strongest crossover between the two deities:

Air, Water, Luck, Travel, Weather

I'm not satisfied with that. I think that there's room for a third CN deity, just like there are three LG ones. Even if worshipers of Shimye-Magalla are actually praying to Desna and Gozreh, the faithful have a specific idea of who she is, which will influence what boons they can receive from this meta-deity. So. What is Shimye-Magalla like in their minds?

Sargava, p.27 wrote:
It's generally known that Shimye-Magalla reflects Gozreh's female aspect -- that which matches the capriciousness of the sea -- and pairs it with Desna's love of travel, freedom, and the stars by which the Bonuwat navigate.
Gods & Magic, p.18 wrote:
Born of the ocean’s fury and the wind’s wrath, Gozreh is a fickle deity. Those who ply the waters or rely upon the rains know this better than most, and are sure to placate Gozreh and honor him when the winds and waves are favorable. Gozreh has two aspects, equally depicted in art and sculpture. When at sea, or over water, Gozreh is a woman, with wild, flowing green hair whose body transforms into endless waves. In the sky and over land, Gozreh appears as an aged man with a long white beard, emerging from a mighty storm cloud.

Looks like her portfolios are travel, freedom, the stars, and the sea. DM Alexander Kilcoyne's Sargavan Saga -- which I've been following avidly from the beginning -- eventually determined that she is chaotic neutral, her holy symbol is a piece of driftwood, and her favored weapon is a trident. That all sounds good to me.

If I were DMing a Bonuwat cleric today, I would say that Shimye-Magalla's domains are Chaos, Liberation, Luck, Travel, and Water. (Weather has a strong Air element to it, and that part of Gozreh is omitted.) Her subdomains would be Curse, Exploration, Fate, Freedom, Oceans, and Protean. (I think that Luck would be the one to get two subdomains due to the famous superstitiousness of sailors. Also, I could give good reasons for each of the other subdomains for why they don't fit the flavor.)

So. That's why Dasiji kind of tuned Ms. Zadrian out, even though he's a good guy: her beliefs don't really mesh with his.

Sorry for the delay, folks. Wednesdays are busy for me (work then class), and I was busy all day at work today. I've got a felony arrest raid first thing in the morning, so I've got to get to bed relatively early tonight.

I'm sorry for my being absent. The internet at my house has been out, and I only have a short time to get on while at the university. I'll do my best to keep up, but until it gets fixed, I'll be kinda SOL.

Do I need to roll again for Sense Motive, or can I use that last one, which was apparently unneeded? Because then all it would take is two successful Aid Another rolls, if that's something that others could help me with. (I'm having a little trouble picturing how myself, but I make a habit of not standing in my own way. Maybe with an eyeroll or something.)

Only roll SM if you haven't aleady, which means Quintus and Dasiji already have their roll in. If someone wants to use Aid Another to help the already-skeptical Desiji, that's fine.

Boys, we're really showing this drunk old lady what for, eh? Good thing Pathfinders don't start out on probation.

On the bright side, our depiction of a bunch of very young, brave, and inexperienced hero-wannabes is spot-on. ;)

This week, I discovered the best comic strip since Fox Trot:

Order of the Stick

Love the rules references.

Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes is another good one.

Fredrik. How is the Battles Case? Worth the rather steep price?

I bought the Beginners Heroes 4-pack and liked it, though they seem a little flimsy.

I'll check out Goblins. I've read a bit of Looking for Group. It's a bit more twisted than Order...

So, any feedback on HeroLab from this group? Is it worth the investment? Does it help with running a game, as well as character creation?

Thanks

100% worth it, even with the added cost of the upgrades.

The Battles case was worth it to me. However, value calculations like that are very personal. On the one hand, my income is low; on the other hand, so are my expenses. On the one hand, I don't have an immediate use for such miniatures; on the other hand, I don't have an existing collection.

As my first set of things like that (which I mentally expensed as basically a birthday/Christmas gift to myself), it was totally worth it. Lots of good figures, and the few problems were learning experiences. For example, I had a unique problem with my frost giant of having a forearm broken off -- and so I learned how to fix that kind of thing, which made it a positive experience for me.

For the case-opening experience, mine starts here. Something that I learned from the aggregate stats of people like me posting our results is that there are four super-rare larges, exactly one per case (let alone brick): the Chimera, Manticore, Giant Caveweave Spider, and Frost Giant. If it makes a difference.

As for gameplay, I'm still here; I just want to hear more from other players before taking my next action. I would do a very good job of roleplaying the "no tour, no medicine" gambit; but since we didn't co-ordinate ahead of time, it's kind of the nuclear option. So, as a player, I'd rather give the other gambits time to play out before going there.

Hero Lab: It looks pretty cool. Wish they bundled the supplements differently, though. Like one full of traits, one full of equipment, one full of skill,...etc. That would be more practical for character creation. Nice base package.

Figures: Thanks. I'm thinking of buying some of the pieces to make a decorative chess set. Obviously, a small one....

Dasij: You know how Astyannax feels about planning ahead of time. Or the lack of in this group....

Order of the Stick just continues to impress me. Depth, plot, humor: great RPG comic.

If any of you have an evil bent (in RPGing...), here's my non-Wondrous item. I think it was a little too complicated..

Phylactery of Urgathoa:

Phylactery of Urgathoa
Aura moderate necromancy [evil]; CL 14th
Slot wrists, hands; Price 68,600 gp; Weight

Description
Only wearable by an anti-paladin, this tiny box contains a fragment of parchment with the name ‘Urgothoa’ inscribed on it. The box rests on the bicep, held firmly in place by a cord made of flesh (type varies) that wraps down around the arm and hand. The phylactery and the cord may not be covered by a gauntlet, bracers, gloves, etc.., and the hand retains full usage.

Once per day, as a Standard Action, the anti-paladin can use one of his Channel Negative Energy uses and within a 30’ radius he may control a number of undead equal to his level as per Control Undead. Any undead with hit dice less than the anti-paladin’s level do not get a save. Any undead of equal or greater hit dice receive a Will save to resist the control compulsion. The DC for this Will save is equal to 10 plus ½ the anti-paladin’s level + his Charisma modifier – the difference between his level and the undead’s hit dice.

The compulsion lasts until the anti-paladin or undead are killed or he releases the undead. At any one time, the anti-paladin can control a number of undead with total hit dice equal to his current level plus his Charisma modifier.

Each day that the Phylactery is worn does one temporary Constitution point of damage. When the anti-paladin’s Constitution reaches zero, he becomes an undead creature with all relevant changes. For every day that the Phylactery is not worn, the anti-paladin regains one Constitution point.

Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, Control Undead; Cost 34,300 GP

Male Human Bard (pianist) 8

I remember reading/hearing that they're not too big on major restrictions or drawbacks... the Con damage seemed ok, but maybe restricting it to just anti-paladins was too much?

This was mine:

Turban of the Merchant King:

Turban of the Merchant King
Aura moderate divination; CL 7th
Slot head; Price 11,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.
Description
Prized by the trade princes of Qadira (should have left that part out), this turban is made of bright red and yellow silk with a large, multicolored opal in its center. As a standard action, a creature wearing the turban can detect treasure such as gems, artwork, jewelry, or magic items in a 60 ft. cone-shaped emanation. The wearer can maintain this effect as a standard action. The amount of information revealed depends on how long the wearer studies a particular area.

  • 1st Round: Presence or absence of treasure.

  • 2nd Round: Number of treasure items and the location of each. If an item is outside the wearer’s line of sight, then he discerns its direction but not its exact location.

  • Each Additional Round: The wearer can attempt to evaluate the monetary value of one item in his line of sight as per the Appraise skill with a +5 competence bonus to his roll. Each round, the wearer can turn to detect treasures in a new area. The turban’s effect can penetrate barriers, but 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt blocks it.

The wearer may use this ability up to 9 rounds per day. Additionally, the wearer may activate the turban as a standard action to determine the properties of one visible magic item by making a Spellcraft skill check with a +10 competence bonus. The wearer may make this check untrained. Using the turban in this way expends 3 rounds from its detection ability.
Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, arcane eye, detect magic, identify, creator must have 5 ranks in the Appraise skill; Cost 5,500 gp

I'm thinking "treasure" might have been too ambiguous... the item as a whole was pretty complicated too, hehe.

Yeah. I know they don't like class restrictions. But I was interested in anti-paladins at the time.

Last year I made a pair of gauntlets that were geared towards the GMs use and roleplaying. I knew that was a dead duck at the outset. I still like it, though.

I like the idea of a rogue flipping down her hood and putting on the turban after they clear a room in battle. Or maybe that's just my current fascination with the order of the stick...

You'll just have to start your own PbP to work in the organization you wanted to submit!

Oof. Got Neil Spicer's comments on my wondrous item. At least he didn't insult my family ancestry...

Arrgh! I was writing a big old post that was taking forever, all about what I was going to do alone with Auntie Baltwin (and the kids) after Quintus left, since I was the last one holding the medicine. It was very dramatic. Then I posted it and saw that everything had been resolved almost an hour earlier, so I deleted it... If the answer to my above question is "yes" then I'd like to retcon if I may.

That is what it seems to imply.

I have emailed Garauk and Zavac to see if they are still with us.

Any word on Zavac and Garauk? In retrospect, I'm guessing that they saw themselves as excluded from the episode, not just the house. I have learned a valuable lesson to watch for fellow players who could use some encouragement to find another way to participate when one is blocked.

Yeah. That's why I tried to pull them in when I went outside. Kinda different when you're not sitting around the table and can carry on the side conversations as the game flows on. Rather, you can, but you have to work it a bit differently in PbP.

I would think this could be a useful tool for the GM to pass on 'ears only' messages.

Sorry for the double post.

I've needed a silvered weapon in two of my three PbPs. And the only character who actually bought one is in the third, of course. I'm going to get a silvered dagger for every character build from now on...

Had a Wrath of Ashardalon session tonight. That's a fun game!

I've heard good things about it. Basically takes 4E to its board game conclusion, as I understand it.

Wrath feels like stripped down D&D. Which, for a board game, makes perfect sense. Almost non-stop combat, magic items, traps, defined objective, cool little figures and floor tiles. LOTS of cards and tokens.

The 13 scenarios go from easy to hard, with #1 being solo. A friend and I played #2. Goal was to stay alive long enough to kill 12 monsters. I think this one ran long: we won in about 90 minutes. I think an average scenario would be less than an hour. Of course, I've died solo in 10 minutes.

Figures are decent plastic. They're a solid color so it's not always obvious what they are, but names are on the bottom.

Side note: the Cave Bear seems to have my number every time he's on the board.

They bill Wrath, Castle Ravenloft and Legend of Drizz't as playable with each other. But I think they've only written a couple scenarios that incorporate them, so they still seem stand-alonish, though I guess you could just mix up the monsters for fun.

I think this would be a GREAT way to introduce kids to D&D. You're taking out the 'heavy' stuff but still getting the basics across.

Yeah that about sums up those three games very well. I've had a lot of fun with them, but they can be punishingly difficult, victory and defeat always seem on the ege of a knife.

Characters and monsters can definitely be swapped out at your lesiure, but frankly, the characters in the Legend of Drizzt are probably the best. Plus its all the Drizzt character staples. Jarlaxle and Entreri, etc.

I only have the Paizo Begginers Box minis: no others at all. But I was thinking of getting some of the new series from wizkids. Buying a few and swapping out some of the one-color minis that comes with the game appeals to me. It would add some color to the board.

I'm hoping to get Drizzt as a birthday gift. Chances are slim, though.

I played some solo Runequest. The feel of being more real D&D is better, but the actual gameplay is kinda boring compared to Wrath. Probably more fun with another player.

Pretty sure we can retcon in whatever discussion we want before opening the door. I just saw it as him making it so that we can move forward when we're ready without having to wait for another update, not trying to rush us.

And really, someone -- perhaps a tactician -- should try asking Quintus what other spells he knows, once he shows his ability with the message. ;) But it wouldn't occur to Dasiji at this point in his career.
