Chi T'reignial |

Chi staying at the doorway starts her spell to discover the magical auras in the place, she swoons slightly as she does. The dread of the pool of blood eating at her very heart. It takes all the power she can muster to calm herself and bring the pounding in chest under control. As she takes a few deep breaths and finishes the spell, her eyes not only seek out a meaning to the auras, but also to determine the mechanisms or irregularities in the room, which might set off a mundane trap.
Chi casts detect magic and looks intently for traps.
Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Chi wouldn't normally make the DC20, but by casting detect magic this trap actually gives her +10 on her perception check to find it... In addition to seeing the magical auras i'm about to describe!
By casting detect magic, Chi manages to spot both the trap and the bypass mechanisms as they are highlighted by magical auras; four well concealed buttons, one on each pillar and facing the centre of the room. From what Chi can tell, the trap has an onset delay so she should be able to rush into the room and push one before the trap triggers. In addition to the auras on the four bypass buttons, another magical aura is visible on the floor of the chamber as well as emanating from the pool of blood. Chi is not sure exactly what the trap triggers once it goes off however.
4 seperate Knowledge: Arcana checks to determine the schools of magic for each aura.

Chi T'reignial |

Chi turns to her friends, "I can see the triggers, come get me if you can cos it all goes pear shaped, I'll go and disable the trap before it gets set off." In that instant she runs quietly across and presses the bypass mechanism hoping the traps magic will dissolve into nothing, so they can all get past this bloody pool and out from the evil looking place, and find their quarry.
Not sure if this all happened at the detect magic time, in which case it'll happen then.

Marcus holds position at the entrance to the room, ready to run in after Chi if necessary.
OK something makes me think this is where the detect magic issue came from :)
nope, it had been on my mind for weeks. This is however, an example of a cantrip saving the entire party from being hit by a trap. To add insult to injury using detect magic here even gave a bonus to the perception checks... Don't want to update from phone will update the next time I get internet access on laptop.

Yes, in this case the trap has been designed to be found with Detect Magic, it was the writers intention surely, that a party would use detect magic to find it. Otherwise the writer would not have had the +10 to Perception to find the disable mechanisms of the trap. If this had just been a trap with DC 25+spell level perception and set off a fireball, then yes Detect Magic should not have been able to spot it when used as radar. I strongly disagree with this being used as an example of the cantrip save problem, cos surely without the Detect Magic the DC for finding the trap would be a near impossible DC for parties to make even with a rogue. This trap rewards the use of Detect Magic, cos to my mind that's what the writer wants/expects the party to do. Anyway enough of this....It must be time to get onto Kill the BEBG.

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

no, the dc was 20 and could be comfortably met with a half decent roll- with detect magic as well it is practically autopass. RAW any magical aura can be found with detect magic deevor, being built into a trap does not exclude them from this (hence my final ruling on the subject in the ooc thread)

Ambroze |

Assuming that Chi announced the presence of the magical auras...
Ambroze moves up to the entrance and casts his own cantrip to reveal magical auras. Remaining in the hopefully relative safety of the entranceway, the gnome scholar studies the auras within the chamber beyond.

Can Ambroze also attempt a Knowledge (history) or (religion) to understand the function of this room? If so: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 for history, subtract 2 for religion.

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Knowledge (Arcana) rolls were for the four auras within the room Chi so you'd have this information before you went in.
1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Chi could tell the aura blanketing the whole room was an Abjuration aura of Faint power. Chi is unable to determine what the auras on the four buttons are, but the pool has a Moderate aura of both Evil and Necromancy. Chi also spots Faint Transmutation auras on the ceiling.
You failed the same check as Chi did so no further information.
Chi darts into the room and presses one of the bypass buttons- although shes sure she triggered some kind of proximity alarm, by pushing the button nothing untoward appears to happen. A few tense moments pass, but it seems the trap has been completely disabled, for now... Upon closer inspection, the blood in the pool is most definitely real...

DM Alexander Kilcoyne |

Chi checks the door carefully, finding it to be unlocked. At that precise moment, a disgusting, squelching sound coming from the western tunnel attracts your attention to it, just as a disgusting, amorphous mass of flesh rounds the corner from inside the tunnel.
