Malthir Al Dagon |
Malthir will ask around and find out if some of the hunters are willing to skin Tuskgutter for us, do they think that its hide might be worth something or has it become too damaged with the combat?
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
After reading his letter Edric rejoins his companions as they discuss how the trial of Kressel should be handled. Though he listens intently to the points brought up, he seems distant and troubled.
I too have seen this zone of truth used in trials back in Brevoy.... For a moment the knights eye's shift north and he falls silent for a moment. With the sudden realization that the conversation has died and all eye's are on him he clears his throat. It is a very effective tool but one that must be used sparingly, if at all. The use of such magic worries me and my reasons are threefold. First if it is used in the first fair trial these lands have ever seen then the people might see it as a necessary element of justice, and demand that it be used in every trial. Second having ones freewill taken away is a serious matter and one that many people would be opposed to. If we used this spell I fear that some people who would normally testify in favor or against the accused might hesitate stepping forward in fear of this magic. Third and finally I would worry that like all magic there would be some trick or loophole that could be exploited.
Thunder storm! Turning the PC off for now finish post tonight if possible.

The hides a bit of a mess and not worth as much as it would have been intact, but Oleg will take it off your hands for 50 GP.

I agree with all of your points, except for the fact that Zone of Truth doesn't compel them to talk, just if they speak they can not tell a lie. I wasn't thinking it would be for anyone except for Kressle herself. She would have the option of being under the Zone of Truth so that we could certify that what she was saying it true. She can take her chances without it, but if she is true to her word, what does she have to loose by speaking the truth under the spell. She can always choose not to answer. I would be more concerned about such magic as domination or suggestion since that really takes away someone's free will. But that is just my thoughts.

I know that Oleg wanted the head for a trophy for the outpost, which we are more than happy to supply him with, so I think the 50gp for the skin is very fair. Can we get some jerky out of the creature as well for rations? I am sure there is plenty of meat to go around!
After the conversation regarding the trial, Malthir will spend the rest of the day socializing with the folks at the trading post building up the excitement for the nights celebration and making sure people know that Casimir will be telling the grand tale of their battle with the great boar tonight! Yes Cas the pressure will be on for an epic tale tonight, you can thank me later....BTW perform is untrained so Malthir is going to try to assist by being a prop in the tale as it is told :D any other takers to assist him, it is a Charisma check.

I've decided to mostly hand wave rations for this campaign, unless you get trapped underground in a cave-in or something it won't come up. Sure you can get some meat off old Tusky. Oleg doesn't want the head as a trophy, the hunters wanted it to make headcheese out of.
Vaysh |
Vaysh nods as Edric states his thoughts, I do agree with Sir Orlavsky that the use of it will quickly create a sense of its necessity for trials to be legitimate. If that belief takes hold it may create a class difference between those able to wield such power and those who cannot. Mayhaps I am wrong, but I have studied tales of those who rely on magic too much, few seem to pay heed to them as the call of its power and potential blinds them to the dangerous road that they travel down.
Vaysh sighs, There is no magic that cannot be tricked, misused, or foiled. To say that such a spell makes it impossible to tell a lie creates a sense of security because of it. I fear it will quickly become a crutch of a judicial system. Ways around it will be discovered, and it begs the question of how its use will be governed and policed. Magic can be wrong, I have learned this in my study of it.
Vaysh looks to the assembled and sighs again, Always remember, we are not the true judges of our kind, that honor lies with the Lady of Graves. Those who lie to their judgment in this world will only receive their reprisal in the next, they do not escape their punishment merely delay it and extend it. These are my words of warning to you.
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
No offence to Jhod but I also have misgivings in regards to a member of a religious order presiding over a judicial proceeding. It is one thing to worship a god but to receive ones power from a deity makes me skeptical as to whether that person can truly be non-bias. The law cannot be partial to one religious teaching. It runs the risk of either being to lenient to those who share the systems beliefs or hash on those who do not, or at least it opens up the possibility of it being perceived that way. I would prefer if Kesten preside over the trial.
Malthir Al Dagon |
I would prefer to not use this magic on her as well, that is why we should give her the choice, in front of everyone, to submit to it or not. Oleg and the people will want this women to hang. Do you think her words of supposed repentence will be enough to sway them otherwise? She is guilty of banditry. Nearing the noose, those that are guilty will often say whatever they can to save their lives, if they mean it or not. That is what the people will believe. They have not seen her after being reunited with her sister or fighting Tuskgutter to help us. We have a tool that may save her life. Jhod has used it in the past so he probably knows how people can deceive the magic. I know the magic can be deceived, but the fact is, to yes or no questions, you can't answer falsely under the magic. The people will believe that what she says is the truth and may accept whatever judgement Jhod renders. I will accept whatever the group decides though. My vote is to offer to use the magic on her.
Malthir Al Dagon |

Malthir would like one of the tusks then, he plans to give it to the boy after he has restored his arms.
Vaysh |
Vaysh looks at Edric quizzically, Mayhaps you did not hear when Mister Kavken spoke with Malthir, he is not part of a religious order. He was removed from that office many years ago, that is one reason that he comes to these lands.
Vaysh then looks to Edric before she continues her gaze unimpeded by her red hair, As for your feeling, I must wonder if you believe that faith is measured in blessings granted. Certainly those raised under the teachings of our divine lords can have faith equal to or greater than the purveyors of their blessings. If they have this strong faith, then they shall make judgments based on their beliefs, whether or not they are of the laity or the clergy. I have little desire to found a society that looks to atheism for its judgment.
She takes a deep breath, then speaks further, I must wonder why those divinely inspired are welcome to guide our communities, heal our sick, tend our wounds, bless our fields, and help usher our children into the world but be prohibited from acting as arms of the law. Does this divine blessing somehow taint them?
Slowly Vaysh exhales the intake, I see no reason to ban those of faith from this position. Anyone can become corrupt, and this seems to be the heart of the matter that you speak to. I have no desire to support those individuals in their corruption, but I would think that individuals who are constantly under the scrutiny of the very gods above may well be those who will prove resistant to such whims of fancy.
When Vaysh finishes, she seems to diminish before all of your eyes, returning to the small woman you have traveled with. As to you Malthir, if an offer of it is made refusal of it will bring its own conclusions by the masses. If it is your wish to forward the purpose of such, I will acquiesce. Certainly both you and Sir Orlavsky seem to have studied the nature of magic from our talk. I guess my studies of the arcane and magic use differ from what you have learned with your extensive study of it. I have been warned of reliance of magic, as it is a twisting and strange thing that can get away from you when you least expect or can afford it. If it is your belief that no falsehood can ever disrupt this incantation, that a direct yes or no can never be a lie, I will warn that given time you shall find your reliance on this to lead you astray when needed. Remember, there’s is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip.
Vaysh sits down on her bunk, Many will want her to hang, I do not think that offering them any of her words will stop them from this desire. If we are to offer the use of this, it will become necessary I fear. Kressle’s actions are not in question, but her reasons and what she shall do now. If this trial is to judge her past, she is doomed before it begins I think.
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
Taken aback by Vaysh's fiery retort Edric falls silent for a moment before responding, and from his cadence it is apparent that he is choosing his words carefully.
I am truly sorry if my words were perceived as an attack on those of faith that was not my intent.
The Knight lets his apology settle in before continuing. In objecting to Jhod overseeing the trial I merely was voicing my concern that by having a priest act as the judge might make people of other faiths feel alienated. The difference, as I see it, between a worshiper of a god and cleric is that the cleric wields a fraction of their god's power, a power that may or may not be used during a trial, and as such are dependent on their god's approval. A judge who is strong in faith will still base their decisions on their beliefs but if need be can go against the teaching of their god in order to proclaim a verdict that is good for the whole community.
In regards to the spell being used I again apologize, I did not mean to speak as if I had knowledge in the arcane. I only spoke from my own experiences. I know very little of the ways of magic and as such I am very weary of it. Even if what Malthir says if true that if use the spell will only allow Kressel answer truthfully, I am in agreement with Vaysh I do not see the use of this spell swaying many people and worry that if would indeed become a crutch of justice.
In fact I must wonder, even if Kressel does seek repentance now I doubt highly if this spell foretells the future. If a man is caught stealing and is caught, forced to face up to his crime he most certainly will feel guilt but that does not mean he will not steal again. In order to preserve justice every crime must have a strong and consistent punishment. I understand that we would like to take into account Kressel's reasons and her plans for the future but, her actions caused pain and suffering to many people and as such she must be held accountable for them.
Malthir Al Dagon |
If you are concerned about the magic, don't take my word on it, I have only seen it working on a criminal my order was questioning. Talk to Jhod, he mentioned that he has used it in the past. If he feels it is of no value then maybe we shouldn't use it, but then I fear for Kressle's fate and her chance for redemption will be gone, if she deserves it. We need to understand all of her crimes.
Jhod Kavken aka DM AK |
Jhod says a Zone of Truth is frequently used by servants of Erastil, and not just for the person on trial, but also on witnesses and the judge himself is also included in the zone. While not foolproof, especially as it can be resisted by strong-willed individuals, it is used to attempt to help eliminate blatant falsehoods and lies from the trials. It is not relied upon to the extent that a trial will totally rely on it, its seen as a level of insurance. Hes happy to conduct a trial without a Zone of Truth or contribute in any way the group feel is necessary.
Fenna Thistleswade |
"I too have heard of the corrupting power of over reliance upon magic," Fenna says softly to Vaysh, "though these warnings are mostly of the magic that mankind has managed to discover through their own manipulations, rather than that which is granted by the gods... the latter carries far less risk, as the true wielder of the power is beyond the limitations of our mortal spirits."
"Magical means of ensuring that only the truth is spoken do allow some small leeway that a cunning individual can exploit, but it seems that Master Kavken has had experience of its use in the past, so he is likely aware of the potential flaws... as to whether the magic should be used, I feel that if the priest is to be judge, he should decide himself what tools he would like to utilise."
Fenna then looks directly at Sir Edric, "And I do believe that he can judge fairly, we all have loyalties... and I know of no lawfully minded gods that would wish their followers to pervert justice in order allow the guilty to go unpunished, or to punish the innocent unduly. One of Erastil's main areas of interest is that of communities, so surely any compulsion that his priests feel would be to the benefit of such."
Malthir Al Dagon |
Malthir shakes his head in agreement with Fenna's words, Fenna, so you also believe that Jhod would make an acceptable choice as a judge? If so we have reached a majority with Vaysh, Fenna, and myself finding that choice acceptable. I think this would sit well with the folk around here as well. Let us talk with him and determine the next steps. I would rather tonight be a reason for celebration and maybe Casimir's telling of the tale of the forest lord and Kressle's part in his defeat may help her in the eyes of the folk here as well.
Casimir |
So much to do, so little time, so here's the most important of Casimir's actions. I've only skimmed some of the posts, so some details may have to be ret-conned later
- Casimir spends a good deal of the trip back rehearsing his story, making sure that all of the Guardians know when to pitch in and say a line or two - he even allows for Karina and Kressle to participate. (sets up assist rolls nicely).
- Casimir definitly wants the bow, since he can use it mounted and it matches his str bonus.
- Casimir has no problem with Jhod as a judge. He feels that if the Guardians are to rule, they will need to appiont people in positions of trust. Besides, he feels that in order to prevent Kressle form being hanged, some of the Guardians may need to testify in her defense. He also has no objection to the use of magic.
- On the way back, Casimir speaks privately to Kressle about what crimes may come up in her trial, and if there is any chance of calling witnesses in her favor. He is not above influencing the outcome of the trial to keep Kressle alive and in the service of the Guardians - both due to her skills and for more personal reasons.

[ooc] One thing that probably won't happen is Kressle actually being a part of the re-telling, she is under armed guard in our quarters and isn't allowed to leave. I don't think it would be good for her to be seen wondering around and until the trial she is a criminal and should be treated as such in Malthir's eyes until such time as she is judged.
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
Very well, Jhod shall preside over the trial. We should go to him at once in order to discuss the particulars of the proceeding.
Though he tries to act as if he is fine it is obvious that there is something that is troubling Edric. During the following discussion with Jhod, in regards to the trial, the Knight is distant and more than once looses the tread of the conversation. During dinner he barely touches his meal and half-heartily joins in the revelry. It seems to anyone watching him that he tends to be watching his companions with a look of intense contemplation as if trying to solve a riddle.
Malthir Al Dagon |
At some point in the evening when Malthir notices that Sir Edric seems distant.
Well my friend, you seem to be lost in your thoughts. I am not much of a councelor so I won't try to pick your brain but rather I will say this. We have our whole lives to determine what is right and wrong in life, but only few times will we be able to enjoy moments such as these, where great battles have been fought and great celebrations are to be had. Leave your worries behind for a night, come join me in a drink and celebrate, you are too young to let the weight of a country rest on your shoulders.
If Malthir's attempt at camaraderie is accepted by Edric, Malthir will spend some time with him swapping stories and joking with the knight, if he is rebuffed he shrugs and tells Edric that he shouldn't waste these moments, we could be killed tomorrow by some great beast and returns to the evenings festivities.
Have several other things he wants to do during the night but I want to hear what Jhod says next about the trial, timing, ect. Just in case here is my assist on the tale to be told [ooc]Cha Chk1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 [/ooc]
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
Edric gives Malthir a weak smile.
Thank you my friend, a drink sounds like a very good idea.
Drink in hand Edric climbs onto a table and addresses the crowd, raising his mug in a toast.
My friends and neighbors of the Greenbelt! To Tuskgutter King of the Forest and guest of honor at this feast! And to my fellow Guardians for extending him the invite!
The Knight then drains his drink and climbs down from the table heading directly for a second. As the evening progressed Edric continues to drink and make toast and with each one he grows more morose and irritable.
Jhod Kavken aka DM AK |
Before the evening truly starts in earnest, the group ask Jhod how he plans to handle the trial.
Presiding as the Judge over this trial, I will be calling upon several people to give their account of Kressle's crimes and the extent of them; particularily Oleg and Svetlana. In her defence, I will be asking several questions of Kressle, her sister, and the Guardians of the Greenbelt- to determine the extent of her attempts at redemption thus far, and whether they believe she will fall into her old habits if left to her own devices.
The sentence for unrepentant banditry is stated very clearly on your charter is it not? Sword and Rope... The Zone of Truth and Kressle's defence will be mostly to determine if Kressle is truly repentant; once I am confident of this, we will begin to find a fitting punishment for her.
The large crowd of people give a hearty cheer at Edric's toast. The mixture of Oleg's recent successes, the excitement of Tuskgutter's death and the promise of a tale, and the rumours of a bandit trial tomorrow have given the local hunters, trappers, loggers and refugees plenty to gossip about- and Oleg and Svetlana are incredibly busy keeping everyones tankards full. More than ever, the group are seen as local heroes, and even the strangely surly Edric is treated like family by the people here.
Karina aka DM AK |
Picking her moment carefully once the Paladin has had a few drinks already, Karina innocently sits beside the celebrating Malthir, smiling at him. Holding her own drink up in a toast, her smouldering eyes twinkle in the moonlight as she holds up her glass expectantly-
To your mighty deeds today, in the name of the Herald! she proclaims.

No Karina I can not claim that honor alone, we all played a part in this. To all of our mighty deeds today in the name of the Herald!. Now I must check on your sister's guard. How is she doing BTW? This must be difficult for her, everyone out here celebrating while she sits in there waiting on a possible sentence. Well we can't change things at the moment, let's have hope for what tomorrow will bring. Back to business for a moment at least.
Malthir uses the excuse to get up and go to check on Kesten's man guarding the Guardian's quarters, say some encouraging words to him and bring him a fresh plate of boar meat. He watches the door while he gives the man a break to eat his grub and listen to a little music.
When he returns he strategically places himself on the other side from Karina and begins to look for Casimir's grand entrance!
Karina aka DM AK |
Anyone wanting to assist in Casimir's tale, whether as a prop or anything else you can think of, give me a DC10 charisma check. You can't take 10 on this check.
Malthir- The guard nods gratefully as you briefly take over his shift. It seems Karina has followed you to check on her sister...
I am confident people will see the good in my sister, so I do not worry... she says cheerfully, beaming at you.
Fenna Thistleswade |
"That seems like the best course of action," Fenna agrees with Jhod's plans for the trial, "is there anything beyond testimony you would like our help with?"
Later as the night progresses, and Edric's mood darkens, Fenna approaches him to offer a quiet word, "do you object so strongly to our choice of judge on the morrow? Is there anything we can do to reassure you of his impartiality?"
When Casimir begins his tale, Fenna stands quietly to listen, but circulates throughout the assembled crowd, and at appropriate pauses offers her own commentary to those around her. Charisma 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Malthir Al Dagon |
Here is the roll for the big story. Just my base roll, any assists should be factored in afterwards - Perform (oratory) 1d20+6
Figures, all of the guts and we can't even describe the glory! (I am including my sucky roll in that statement!
Casimir |
At the trial, Casimir is going to retell how Kressle took him captive and the terms of her surrender. He will emphasise that she had every opportunity to kill him, but once she learned that Karina was alive, she surrendered and accepted any punishment for her crimes.
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
Charisma1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Surrounded by friendly grateful folk it is hard to for Edric to remain dower and late into the night he begins to bond with a couple of the locals. As the crowd gathers around for Casimir's telling of the story the inebriated knight gets so carried away with the telling that at points he interrupts the bard and retells entire scenes of the battle.
Sir Edric Orlavsky |
When approached by Fenna before the glum Knight gives the small gnome a warm smile.
No, my dear Fenna it is not the trial that upsets me but a personal matter that had me troubled. I suppose that I a bit cynical on the topic and I must admit I felt taken aback by the group’s response to my concerns but that is behind us now. As our good friend Malthir informed me this is a night for revelry not worries.

Man, that will draw some appreciation from the crowd at least. So now we know what it takes to get Sir Edric to relax! Another round for Sir Edric! At least his horse understands him :O
Vaysh |
Vaysh listens to Edric’s words, Mayhaps I was too harsh in my reply. I offer my apology as well to you Sir Orlavsky. However, you should know that I too would endeavor to follow my upbringing in the faith of the Lady of Valor if I were to render judgment. I doubt that many would be different if their faith were true. That does not mean that those who violate the tenants of law would go unpunished, but instead punished as my beliefs would guide me. I think that all of us would do similar based on our beliefs.
Vaysh listens to the thoughts of the rest of her companions, then bows her head, It seems that Sir Orlavsky and I are outvoted. I hope that I am wrong in my warnings, time will be the judge.
Evening
After finishing what help Svetlana needs for cooking, Vaysh takes two plates to the Guardians’ bunks. She looks to Kressle and says I brought you dinner, I hope that you find it enjoyable. Vaysh gives a weak smile to the other woman, then sits down on her bunk and begins to eat.
After sitting in silence for a short time, more pushing her food around on her plate than eating it; Vaysh looks to Kressle and says, I hope that you do not mind my presence, I have no desire to be out there this night. I plan to spend my night seeking guidance from my patron and see how She advises me.

Kressle smiles gratefully at the food Vaysh brought her.
How ironic... I was just trying to do the same thing... Do you think Iomedae will hear my prayers too? She sounds like a remarkable deity... I had not heard of her in my hometown, but then, she would not have appealed to me until I had to become a strong, independent woman myself... By all means, join me.
Feel free to carry on any RP, I am just making a post detailing the group's tale. Edric you are certainly getting some mileage out of the +3 aid another your order gives you ;).

There are quite a few favourable circumstance modifiers up there too, as well as Edric, Fenna and Karina's assists.
There is a call for silence by Oleg as Casimir 'takes the stage', beginning to tell his tale from atop the battlements to the assembled crowd beneath. Fenna assists by adding her own commentary to the crowd around her. Casimir tells quite a fine tale, engaging the interest of the dozens and dozens of people in the crowd, and they cheer heartily despite Casimir stumbling over his words a few times in the performance- the generally good reputation of the group, the anticipation of the tale and the stark raving drunk status of many of the revellers contributing to a very successful tale.
Casimir skillfully plays up Kressle's role in the tale, causing many a gasp as he re-tells her heroic unarmed charge, and the 'look of surprise and terror' that filled Tuskgutter's face as she punched the massive beast in the face with her bare hands. After some murmuring, this is met with reluctant approval by the crowd.
It is at this point that a drunken Edric steps onto the battlements, interrupting Casimir and taking over the tale for a spell, emphasising his shouting with overblown gestures made with his two hands to represent his own mounted prowess in the fight, slurring his words and spilling beer everywhere as he is still holding two full tankards...
Despite Casimir's initial horror the revellers cheer louder than ever, and the skillful duelist manages to finish the rest of the performance with Edric still on stage, his sombre and operatic oratory providing a great contrast to Edric's drunken shouting and mime-acting.
At the end of the tale there is a booming applause that could surely be heard from miles around, and a roar of approval as Oleg suggests a toast in the Guardian's honour.
Oh yes I had fun writing that... :D.
Malthir Al Dagon |
Later that night, after the telling of the tale from Casimir and Sir Edric, his own bumbling attempt at helping with the story, which got a few laughs at least from the folk, he notices that Vaysh has not been at the celebration. After a quick look around and no one has seen her he grows worried. Finally making his way back to the Guardians resting place, he finds out from the guard that Vaysh has been in here for the last couple of hours. He opens the door.
Vaysh, there you are. You had me worried. I need to speak with you, alone please. By his tone it seems important.
Assuming they find a place that they can talk with some privacy, maybe on one of the walls.
Vaysh |
Vaysh stands, brushing her dress down and moves next to Kressle, sitting next to the other woman. My family has long been the bearer’s of a sacred duty. Iomedae was a woman just as both you and I are; She was mortal and found herself living in times of great distress. During the campaigns against a powerful and corrupt man she distinguished herself, and even after he was defeated she did not lay down her arms. She and her company that had been tested during the war traveled the lands ensuring that darkness did not rear its head again.
Years later, the company found itself in Absalom and My Lady took the fabled Test of the Starstone. She emerged from the test successful and ascended because of this. Before she left Absalom, she tasked her company with a mission. They were to spread to the far corners of Avistan and beyond and ensure that the darkness they had faced did not rise again, or any other threats similar.
Vaysh leans in towards Kressle, The patriarch of my line was in that company.
She pauses and withdraws a bit, allowing her statement to hang for a few long moments. The company broke apart; they traveled to many destinations, eventually all were alone. My ancestor came to the lands north of here and distinguished himself in service of Rostland. His first born bore this mark, she says as she pulls her hair away from the left side of her face. It is the symbol of Iomedae, a constant reminder of her task that we have been given.
Since that time, one child each generation bears this mark, though mine is far more conspicuous than any that have come before. She pushes the hair behind her head and allows her hand to fall. This is the history of the duty my family has had.
This has formed our faith in Iomedae, it has been tempered and made strong through long years of devoted service. I have been raised with strong belief in both the Lady of Valor, and the values that she represents. She pauses for a brief moment again, her next word in sharp contrast to the cadence she has been speaking with, However, I have learned that there are more interpretations of the Inheritor’s faith than what I have been raised with.
Vaysh sighs deeply, closing her eyes for a moment to gather herself and blink away the water in her eyes, The short version of the faith that I have grown up knowing is that the strong must protect the weak, we are to gird ourselves and those around us against the predators of the world. We are not to put our own desires ahead of the needs of those around us, but instead work to ensure the betterment of all. We are to care for the tools that we have been given, for this shows respect to our patron, but we shall not fall to vanity.
She looks towards her companion with a smile, It is better to take a prisoner who surrender’s honorably than to waste a life.
Vaysh picks her hand up and wipes away the small tears that have formed in her eyes as she thinks of her life in the past, after a few moments to collect herself she looks to Kressle again, Redemption is something close to my heart as well as the Vigilant Warden’s heart. Since I have come to these lands I have seen more death than I care to, I have long hoped that I would find those who would be willing to find a new way to live. I have been counseled by those I travel with that I should not expect to find repentance out here. Malthir instructed me he has some sense provided to him by Iomedae that allows him to discern those of redeemable nature.
Vaysh looks puzzled for a moment and bites her lip nervously, He glowed in the fight against you so many days ago, he has said that manifestation of that blessing revealed those with evil in their hearts. He told me that Happs would not be redeemed because he had this evil in his heart.
She looks again to her companion, I know that he is blessed by Her, but I do not think he is able to tell the future path of a life. I know that I wished a worse fate on you than I have on anyone for your use of Casimir during our first meeting. Those were feelings formed in the fire of battle, and while they were not as transient as I would hope such anger to be, they have passed.
Vaysh laughs suddenly, I fear that I have become lost from the subject of our talk; mayhaps I can find it again. It does not surprise me that you have not heard of her growing up, she does not have a large following in these parts. You will find many of her believers to the north near the Worldwound. I believe Her to be remarkable, the story of Her ascension and my family’s tie to Her have brought Her close to my heart. Vaysh holds her hand to her bosom as she says this.
If the Lady of Valor shall hear your prayers, it is something that I have come seeking guidance on as well. I seek to understand what it is she wishes of me this coming day. I know in my heart what it is that I wish to do, but I do not know if what I have learned of my Lady is the correct path or if Mister Al’Dagon’s beliefs are. He seems to believe far less in forgiveness that I have been raised to learn and seeks instead to stamp out the darkness, Vaysh raises her hand to Kressle’s face, I hope to find those who will shine.
Vaysh’s hand cups Kressle’s face for a moment, then Vaysh comments, You look like pictures that I have seen of Iomedae.
Vaysh breaks concentration on what she is doing at the time when Mister Al’Dagon comes in, she looks to the paladin and nods to him. I am sorry to have worried you. I will be but a moment. Vaysh turns from Malthir to Kressle, leaning in towards the other woman she says, I shall be back.
Vaysh gathers the plates and notices that she has not eaten much of her dinner, then heads out from the bunkhouse to speak with Malthir. She gives a quick nod to the guards at the door, and thanks them for closing it behind her. She looks to her taller companion, May we take a walk to the kitchen, our dishes should be returned.
When the two of them find a quiet place to talk, Vaysh is obviously taken aback by what Malthir tells her. Mister Al’Dagon, I have not been hiding. I have been doing the same thing that I have since I came to these lands, I am doing what I believe is right. Vaysh starts out in exclamation, but calms quickly.
She moves to interpose herself between Malthir and the countryside he is gazing, though it would be easy for the imposing man to look past her if he wished. She takes his hand in both of hers and starts again, Malthir, my purpose for spending time in the bunks was twofold this evening, first I am seeking answers from my patron on what I should do, for the world that I find and the teachings that I have learned do not always agree. I am hoping that I will discover some insight in my communion, some guiding force that shall provide me certainty in my course.
Vaysh stops, and breathes deep before speaking again. She dips her head down to control her hair, revealing the sign on her face, I have also gone to spend time with the one person who at the time needs to know things are alright the most! As far as I am able to tell, the rest of us will all be here tomorrow when the stars are out, but there is one that may not be. I do not disagree with you, nor this celebration. It is necessary for both the Guardians and those who come to this place to receive comfort; most of our company was involved with ensuring those gathered here have had an evening worth remembering when I looked in on you all after finishing my scullery work.
The smaller woman looks into Malthir’s eyes, I am aware that those here look to us for inspiration, I have seen it in the past. This is not the first time that those of my line have been looked to like this, nor shall it be the last. However, I have grown knowing that there are times when you play politics and there are also times when you look to what is most important. For those assembled out here, there will be other nights. I have sung, I have danced, and I have shared stories with them before. I have not left their company for time alone, I have left their company that I may break bread with someone who may not have another night.
She looks downcast, then closes her eyes, I respect the opinions that you have brought to me, as I respect the beliefs that you have. I know that you have a strong vision of the future in these lands, I do as well. We may share faith, but I think that we are different in our interpretations of it. Most nights I have made myself available to those who gather here.
Vaysh moves his captive hand close to her, clasping the large hand between hers; she looks at it for a few moments, biting the inside of her cheek. Then she raises her head to look to the paladin and asks, Have others commented on this, or have you come to look for me because you missed me this evening?
Malthir Al Dagon |
Casimir |
After the succesful tale, Casimir circulates through the crowd, talking to the gathered people and answering many a toast.
He chats up the partygoers, getting their reaction to his story, but more importantly to gauge their opinion of the Guardians, and the anticipation of the upcomming trial. He tries to pick up any hints of how the crowd feels about Kressle - if they are out for blood or if his tale has stired some sympathy for her.
Once the talk is done, he moves toward the bunkhouse, twin cups of wine in hand. He pauses for a moment in the shadows as Malthir and Vaysh leave, then nods to the guard and enters.
As Kressle looks up at her new visitor, he flashes her his best smile.
I hope you had fun talking about the salvation of your soul with those two...now perhaps we can discuss the salvation of your neck.
Kressle aka DM AK |
Kressle listens to you wordlessly for some time, and you feel she has drawn some comfort from your words.
Thank you for sharing your tale and for being here Vaysh. Allow me to say- I haven't been with your group for long, but you and Malthir are the same gold piece, your just two different faces of it. Justice and Righteous Wrath tempered with Mercy and Compassion. I am fortunate that Brevoy did not send mere brutal killers to the Greenbelt... Karina speaks highly of you all and has been telling me of your deeds.
Kressle smirks for a moment. Three handsome men in your party must be a young farmgirl's dream huh?
Kressle begins to do some complex stretches and begins to run through a martial routine that is obviously very familiar to her, going through it with an intensity that almost frightens you. You sense that although Kressle has submitted to redemption and a trial, if the sentence given is death she would want to go down fighting...
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20I'm not sure your statblock specifies it, but I assume you went Versatile Performance (Oratory).
You sense a lot of confusion amongst the crowd, and many minor arguments have broken out over Kressle, with some like Oleg saying she should hang for her crimes and others arguing she could be a true hero of the Greenbelt if the Guardians were to mentor her. Interestingly, Svetlana appears to be in a different camp to her husband on this issue.
You enter the bunkhouse and you can see Kressle is finishing off some kind of martial routine, ending with a somersault and high kick. She smiles wryly as you enter and announce yourself.
Well, it pays to cover every angle. I heard the roar of the crowd. You must have put on quite a show...
Vaysh probably won't be able to post today I was informed, and Casimir's still on rationed internet time. So Malthir, Edric and Fenna are mostly running the show.
DM Alexander Kilcoyne |
You guys can retcon your conversation with Kressle and the Vaysh/Malthir romance, to keep things moving...
The next morning the trading post is abuzz with excitement. People have gathered to watch Jhod Kavken oversee the trial of Kressle, a known bandit leader who surrendered herself to the Guardians of the Greenbelt. A makeshift stage has been made of Oleg's various benches, and seating has been made available up on the battlements of the post.
You guys up to anything in particular before the trial?
Malthir Al Dagon |
Not really, just share a prayer and some words with Kressle in the morning. Help Jhod with any preparations and talk to Kesten about security for the trial. I will check in on Sir Edric of course ad ask him if he wants to work on some heavy blade practice this morning? I wonder how he is feeling :)
Jhod Kavken aka DM AK |
With everyone gathered, and any spectators having been searched for hidden weapons, the trial begins. Most of the spectators have been gathered onto the battlements, and the Guardians and Kesten's group are the only ones bearing arms, stood in the centre of the courtyard near Kressle. The tough woman stands tall and proud, despite some jeering from the crowd. Jhod swiftly silences the jeerers with a stern glare, clears his throat, and then the middle-aged man begins-
Greetings all- bless you in the name of Erastil and Iomedae. We gather here today to give the bandit leader Kressle a fair trial, before the people of this community. Oleg, you have our thanks for allowing us to use your trading post for the purpose of justice and the greater good.
First, we shall ascertain the extent of Kressle's crimes. Kressle was a leutenant of the Stag Lord, a known Bandit Lord operating in this region, and responsible for the Thorn River Camp in the forest- managing a group of roughly a dozen bandits. Kressle, is this correct.
Kressle nods.
To begin this trial, any who have suffered at the hands of Kressle and her band of bandits please come forward and testify. You must enter the Zone of Truth I have placed here, or I will be forced to assume your testimony is unreliable- if you have only the truth to tell, then you will have nothing to fear from entering the Zone.
A few of the local hunters testify against Kressle, mostly for minor crimes of theft and extortion. The main testimony against Kressle comes from Oleg, who emotionally tells the assembled onlookers of the terror she brought to his trading post three months ago when she started demanding tribute. He tells everyone of her laughing threats to cut off his arm, and his fear at what her second-in-command Happs might do to Svetlana if he didn't co-operate. He tells of her extorting his trade goods at the point of a hatchet, and taking Svetlana's ring- which has now been lost, possibly forever.
So Kressle terrorised you and extorted your trade goods, and stole your lovely wife's wedding ring then Oleg? Serious crimes. I would like to ask the Guardians of the Greenbelt to add to her list of crimes and add their thoughts to Kressle's prosecution. As the chartered representatives of the Swordlords of Restov in this area, their words carry great weight in this trial. Will any of you step forward and speak?
Stroking his chin, Jhod pauses for a moment before posing another question.
Your group also atacked Kressle's camp. For my benefit, can one of you re-tell the story of this attack for me?
Malthir Al Dagon |
Malthir addresses Jhod, his armor gleaming in the mid-day sun, a resigned look on his face.
Jhod, may I ask a question of the prisoner before I make a statement? Assuming he says yes, Kressle, would you please tell Jhod and these good folk how you came to be a bandit leader? This will be hard but please don't leave out any details.
Not sure if you want to type out her whole story but it is really for he folk to find out how she became a bandit and set up Malthir's statement.
If you were to live after this trial, what would you do with your life?
After she tells her tale and answers his question Malthir addresses Jhod and the crowd. Most of you know me. You know I have no issues with fighting bandits and carrying out the necessary sentence on those that have done you harm. Happs deserved the sentence he received. he lets the meaning of his words sink in with the crowd but I ask each of you to look into yourselves. In the same situation, would you maybe have been manipulated by a greater evil, this evil known as the Stag Lord? Could he have turned you against your values and against other people if you lost hope? What if Kressle is not beyond redemption? What if she can make amends for the harm she has done and maybe more importantly, help each of you by assisting the Guardians to defeat this Stag Lord and bring peace to the Green Belt! I have heard her words and seen her actions. I believe that she has taken the first step back towards the light. She has turned her back on her former master and said "I will pay for my crimes, I will accept the sentence that the people of the Greenbelt demand for I have wronged them". But I say do not waste this opportunity to show this Stag Lord and the evil folk that have tried to destroy your way of life that you choose life and redemption over revenge! If you demand it I will be the one to carry out the sentence that is decided, but again I say choose life and redemption.

diplomacy...
Jhod smiles at Malthir, and allows Malthir his words. Kressle tells her tale in much the same way she told the group. Malthir's words seem to carry weight with the people gathered to watch, and some sympathy for Kressle is clearly present in the crowds.
If you were to live after this trial, what would you do with your life?
Kressle responds-
I would hope to be able to stay in the Greenbelt, and help this place become a safer place where horrors like the attack on my sister and I could not come to pass. I would hope to be given the chance to use my axes for good.
Jhod waits for Kressle to finish before addressing the Paladin.
Thankyou, Malthir. For a Paladin to believe that this woman can step back to the light... This is a strong indication that perhaps Kressle's punishment can be lessened. For now though, my question still stands, Guardians. For my benefit and the benefit of the crowd, can you re-tell the story of your attack upon Kressle's camp?
Summarising is fine.
Fenna Thistleswade |
Fenna steps forwards, the daylight shining on her pale skin causing it to seem to meld with the white fabric of her priestly attire. She looks around at the gathered people with her eyes bearing the placid glaze that falls over them whenever the stars do not shine, her gaze resting on Jhod and then Kressle before she eventually speaks, her left hand resting gently on the winged eye hanging from her neck, “After our encounter with Happs and his men here at the trading post, we set out to rout any bandits that might move to seek retribution for our interference. We approached the Thorn River Camp under the cover of darkness, though we where unable to take them fully unawares.”
“The battle proved that most of the bandits there where no match for the blades and spells of the Guardians of the Greenbelt, only Kressle herself was able to stand toe to toe with our warriors. When her axe left Casimir incapacitated, I feared the worst, thinking that she would quickly cut down the rest of us. But instead she surprised me, taking action that to some might seem abhorrent by holding Casimir’s life as a bargaining chip for the freedom of herself and her men. In my own eyes, though, this course of action was very wise, preventing any further loss of life, and was the first moment that I sensed the potential for redemption in the woman… if she was capable of acting to save lives, instead of succumbing to the bloodlust of combat, then perhaps she could turn away from her life of banditry entirely, given opportunity.”

The murmuring of the crowd of onlookers dies away as the serene priestess finishes her testimony, pondering her words.
Thankyou Fenna. So from your testimony we have gathered that Kressle appeared to want to stop further bloodshed at the river camp.
Leaning back into the large chair brought out to him by Oleg, Jhod takes a moment to mull over what has been said so far.
Kressle nearly killed Casimir in this fight, and his life was in her hands, as his lifeblood spilt out over the river. Of all of Kressle's crimes, this was likely the greatest. She spilt the blood of a brave man from Brevoy, seeking to restore a semblance of peace to this untamed land.
I ask you Casimir, what say you on this matter? If any truly have cause to wish for Kressle to be severely punished, it is yourself and Mister Leveton, and we have already heard from our dear host.
I am also eager to hear the... less embellished version of the fight against Tuskgutter and Kressle's role in tracking and fighting the creature. Edric, Vaysh, will one of you oblige me?
Casimir |
I only have one level of bard, so no versatile performance yet. My diplomacy modifier is just my cha mod (+2) until then.
Not my best work, actually, but this crowd was hard not to please - especially when I described how you punched old Tusky in the snout.
The bard props himself on a bunk and sips his cup while he waits for Kressle to finish up her workout. Once she is done, he hands her a cup and motions her to sit.
Quite a display. You are very flexible. If you live through tomorrow, perhaps we can do a bit of sparring - but only if you don't bring your axes, he says with a suggestive undertone and a sly smile.
After another sip of wine, his demeanor turns serious.
I've done a bit of talking with the folks in the crowd about your chances tomorrow. Right now, it could swing either way. And since I'm fairly certain that we would both like to see you escape the noose, I thought we could discuss how best to sway the judgment in your favor.
Fortunately, there seems to be no allegations of murder, mutilation and other seriously bodily harm. People tend to expect blood for
blood, so a capital punishment would be hard to avoid if that was the case. Right now, we seem mostly to be dealing with stolen property - and just as importantly, injured pride.
I believe much of the case against you rests with Oleg, His words and opinions carry much weight, and he is set to see you punished severely. You shamed him in front of his wife, left him unable to defend her honor and on top of it all stole the symbol of their union.
A proud man such as Oleg will carry such offense with a vengeance unless something could be done to give him some way of regaining face.
As it so happens, Svetlana seems to be in favor of leniency. I will do what I can to have her influence her husband, but if you could think of some way to offer amends to Oleg, that would surely help you. It may sting your pride a bit, but it could help you in the end.
As for myself and the rest of the Guardians, we will do what we can to turn the sentence to one of redemption through service to the people of the Greenbelt - which I believe you will prefer to the punishment Oleg favors.
Of course, none of this will matter if you do not truly repent - in that case, your only comfort will be the swift death Malthir's blade will bring.
Casimir finishes his wine and bids Kressle goodnight.
After leaving Kressle, Casimir seeks out Vaysh.
Finding a moment to speak a few quite words together, Casimir makes a suggestion to Vaysh.
It seems to me that Svetlana seems inclined to spare Kressle from a harsh punishment, while Oleg seems hard pressed to see her hang.
Perhaps you could ask Svetlana to sway Oleg towards the path of mercy. In my experience, a man is often less eager to pursue a particular course if he knows his wife is strongly opposed to it.
Trial testimony coming up
Casimir |
When Jhod calls upon him, Casimir stands and takes the stage.
If you found my story of Tuskgutter's demise a bit to flavorful, I'll happily give you a shorter version. - Casimir recounts the hunt and battle, keeping to the facts.
As for the fight at the Thorn River Ford, I bear Kressle no ill will for spilling my blood that night. We came upon the camp with weapons drawn, and by the time Kressle and I crossed blades, several of her men already lay dead on the forest floor. She bested me in honest combat, and her actions prevented further bloodshed. And it should be noted that the bandits she led away that night repayed her by trying to kill her.
That night was not the only time that Kressle had her axe at my throat. Before surrendering to us, she took me captive again, sneaking into our camp while I stood watch. She could have killed me at any time and made her escape, but instead chose to lay down her arms and surrender when she learned that her sister was alive. Casimir motions to Karina. I made it clear to her that if she came back with us, she would have to face justice for the crimes she has committed. She accepted this without complaint.
By her words and actions, I believe that she honestly seeks redemption. And I would consider it a waste to have her maimed or slain, when she could be of value to the people of the Greenbelt.
Vaysh |
As for the other two, both pull on my heart and I am lost as to what to do. However, neither seems to be interested in me as more than a companion of the trail. Mayhaps they do not find me to their liking, I know little of what men desire. I have seen both of them look to you and your sister with interest.
Vaysh watches the routine that Kressle performs for a time, then begins her prayers to Iomedae. She calls upon Iomedae to provide her guidance in the coming day.
Then Vaysh turns and begins heading back toward the bunkhouse.
Will post more up on other things later on. This is what I had for now.
