Survival Rolls:

Edric-1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 (if his is the assist, add +3 not +2)
Fenna- 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 (+8 at night, +4 at day, +6 on daily exploration checks)
Malthir-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Vaysh-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
Casimir-1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
Karina-1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Kressle- 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Total=28

Sniffing around and searching in Tuskgutter's territory, you come across what you are sure must be his tracks. It's about 4PM at this point, and your in pretty dense forest. Kressle and Fenna are sure the tracks are very fresh- only made within the past hour. The creature must be very big judging by the size of the trail...

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Casimir pulls up Shadow and scans the woods.

Well, here we are. Looks like our Forest Lord is in the neighborhood. We can either follow these tracks and see if we can find his lair, or look for a good defensive position nearby and let him come to us.

Doesn't look like we're going to find many open spaces to fight in... Karina mutters, struggling to see through the dense treeline.

This may be your last chance to arm me before we find this monstrosity of an animal- allow me to begin my redemption. Your swords may not be enough here.

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

All right. Best we stay close together and carry on then. When we come upon him, we just have to face his fury with shields held high. Keep a sharp eye, everyone - he's almost sure to hear us before we spot him.

Kressle, for now, you will have to contribute with your skills as a tracker. We will handle the fighting.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

I say we dismount here, except for Edric, and go after the creature on foot. The horses will just be in our way at this point. Be ready to use that potion of bless, lets give it to Vaysh, I doubt if we can sneak up to it armored as we are. Remember I will go in the lead and try to get the creature to attack me, be prepared to form the shield wall against the beast. Casimir, it is up to you if you want your prisoner to carry weapons...Lets go!

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Ninja-time. Kressle stays unarmed for now.

Better to give the potion of bless to Fenna - Vaysh may get a chance to cast her sleeping spell. If we are truly fortunate, that may put down the beast.

I'll ride along side Edric and Talia. Shadow is trained for combat and should be all right once the fight breaks.

Despite his words to Kressle, Casimir hoists her hatchets from his saddlebags and hangs them on the horn of his saddle, where he can easily toss them to her if the need arises. He also draws his sword.

Female Human, Rostlander Celestial Sorcerer 2

Healing Prisoners:
Vaysh looks shocked at Malthir’s objection to Casimir’s healing. Kressle has surrendered to us, it is now our duty to ensure that she is protected. Healing her is a simple kindness. I would share water with her in a scorching desert, healing her here is not such a desperate situation. Remember, kindness is best when traded, the more kindness there is in the world the sooner it will be visited upon you. I think mayhaps your teaching of our Lady’s beliefs and mine have differed in some regard, the last words out of Vaysh’s mouth sound bitter.

I am at a loss. To suggest that we do not have enough to share with someone in need. I care not what she has done in the past or what she will do in the future, NOW she is under our care. The people that we are is shown in trying times, I must wonder if Mister Al’Dagon is not the same man that he has seemed to be. When we have spoken he has talked well of kindness, but here he wishes to withhold such in case he may have use of the resource. Mayhaps I know less of him than I hoped.

Kressle Weapons:
Mayhaps it will be best if Kressle has something to defend herself with. If we fear this creature as we have said, I think it foolish for us to bring her with us unarmed. We have chosen to venture here rather than take her back to safety. She is our responsibility, as is her defense. Mayhaps I am in the minority on the subject.

Not a lot to add ATM. Sorry, had a busy day yesterday so didn’t have time to get anything up. I thought we gave Kressle her weapons before setting out. Maybe that was just a miscom I had.
Edit: Ah, found it. Was that she wouldn't be bound. Added a section of my thoughts on her weapons since we head into danger.

She replies-Know that if things go drastically wrong and one of you falls, I will take their weapon... I will not allow my chances of re-joining a civilised life end on the tusks of a mighty animal.

You get the impression that isn't her only reason for wanting to fight...

The group follow the tracks for some time, the heavier armoured Malthir and Edric making quite a racket as branches thwack against them. The group hear a massive thumping as Tuskgutter makes his way towards you, but the forest is so dense that you only spot him (and he you) at a distance of 20 feet.

Tuskgutter is a massive boar- grizzled with fur that is mostly brown but hints of grey in places. He is about the size of a bear, and his tusks are vicious-looking, each the size of a spear. Snorting in fury at your trespass, the Forest Lord stamps his feet on the ground, causing it to shake... And readies himself to slay the intruders...

@ Kressle's weapons:

I'll keep Kressle's weapons in my pack. If I judge that we need her blades, I will give them to her - or she may retrieve them herself if I am unable. But until then, we will defend her. She goes unarmed. Karina, you are free to keep your arms, but if you surrender them to Kressle without permission, there will be consequences.

Edit:

@ Fenna:

In gnomish That's nice of you to suggest, little mother. But I think it best if I keep them. I've noticed how unknown forces sometimes disturbs items in your possession, and we could ill afford a fumble at such a time.

Kressle is poised to spring into action, crouched and seemingly at home in the forest...

Kressle is on a delayed action.

I am with shield since I haven't decided what to do at this point I can always drop it as a move action, I hope that Fenna and Vaysh can get me out of trouble and have weapon drawn.
Shield wall on me, hurrahhhhh Malthir yells at the beast to try and get its attention.

@ Kressle:

Your axes will be right here. If one of us should fall, you may retrieve them - although I'll probably toss them to you first.

As the magnificent boar breaches the undergrowth, Casimir pulls up the reins of Shadow and stares at the beast in awe.
Sweet mercy...the stories do him little justice. This will make a fine tale, regardless of the outcome.

Hail then, Forest Lord. Your reign ends today, but do not worry. We will give you a fine farewell, and tell of your death for years to come., he calls out.

For a second, he stares intently at the beast, trying to determine if it is a regular boar or some magical beast. Knowledge (nature) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

While doing this he reaches down into his pouch and draws out a small stick of half-melted butter. Rubbing it between the fingers of his shield-hand, he mutters Slippery Steps. At once, the ground directly under the boar is covered in a layer of greasy slime.

Casts grease on the four squares occupied by Tusky

Once the spell is cast, he pats Shadow reassuringly on the neck and whispers a few encouraging words to the eager stallion.

readied free action to have Shadow attack if Tuskgutter moves into range - Ride check 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

That's it for now. DM AK has my further actions. Epic words of inspiration coming up shortly. Let's bring this beast down!

Your Humble Narrator

Casimir:

You think that the Forest Lord must be a Daeodon- a Dire Boar. No normal Boar could physically grow to this size.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

The massive boar struggles and slips somewhat on the Grease spell, but keeps its footing. 1d20 ⇒ 13Plodding forward carefully, the beast gets clear of the Grease spell and swings its nasty-looking tusks at Malthir, who gets his shield up just in time, staggering backwards from the force of the tusk slamming into his shield.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

The beast is using it's ten feet reach, and has moved 4 squares directly south. Remember you can't 5 foot step in difficult terrain. Malthir is up.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Malthir begins to delay, waiting for the rest of his team to finish their actions (spells and such) before moving in and taking the AOO.

Moving up behind Malthir, Karina attempts to distract the Boar's attention for when he makes his move.

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 VS 10

Malthir your AC will be treated as 2 higher for the AOO.

Edric, Vaysh and Fenna are up.

Female Human, Rostlander Celestial Sorcerer 2

Vaysh looks at the massive animal moving in the woods with awe.

Is this what civilization means? That we hunt down everything that makes a place beautiful and wondrous before we get there for it will have no place in our new world. I will pray for you Forest Lord, I wish that you were in a world that had room for you still.

Vaysh shakes her thoughts away and prepares for the massive creature with her arcane utterance.

Celestial Tongue:
Down and decline, drooping dreamer, darkness draws near,
Day is done, dusk is here, my dreamer do not fear.

Mayhaps this may end the conflict before it truly begins and save this creature unnecessary pain in his last moments.

DM AK would like your ruling on this, if I am fighting defensively for the round, will the bonus apply moving into the attack as well or only after I attack, wondering if it applies to the creatures AOO. I imagine Malthir, with shield and sword in front of him, moving in slowly for a haphazard strike but trying to dance around its great tusks. I re-read fighting defensively, but it isn't 100% clear, just says "You can choose to fight defensively when attacking. If you choose to do so you take a -4 penalty on all attacks in a round to gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC for the same round."

Malthir Al Dagon wrote:

I predicted this question would come up. It won't apply until you make the attack- but it will apply until your next action, so assuming Tusky doesn't switch targets it might help you with his Round 2 action.

Vaysh is able to target Tuskgutter with a Sleep spell without risking her allies... But the beast shrugs off the Spell, refusing to succumb to the magic.

Vaysh:

I usually rule that Spellcaster's know why their spells don't work- in this case Tuskgutter has more than 4HD so he wasn't affected. Bad luck :(

Now Malthir! Kressle yells after Vaysh's spell fails- she darts forward, running at the Boar. Obligingly, Tuskgutter takes a swing for her, goring through her chain shirt with his mighty tusk and grievously wounding her. Defiantly, Kressle swings her fist into the Boar's face, punching the beast right in the eye. Tuskgutter yelps in pain at the bruising the tough ranger gives him.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 AOO vs Kressle
2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 6) + 9 = 18 Damage
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 Hit with Unarmed Strike vs Boar
1d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Non-Lethal Damage on Tuskgutter

Karina screams as the tusk gores Kressle...

Edric & Fenna are up. Malthir, i'll assume your acting just as Kressle distracts the Boar- this means you will be on initiative count 5, just after Vaysh. If you choose to act after Fenna, we'll put you on initiative count 4.

Ah, I see Edric has posted. Just Fenna and Malthir's delayed action.

Shields up Malthir!
Edric cries and his moves Talia to left for that he is positioned 10ft from Malthir's right.

Activate shield wall and move action to the 15ft to the east 5ft to the north.

See my edit above Malthir, I submitted the post early. Turns out the question was moot :P

Edric- That move puts you ten feet from Malthir, so neither of you are benefiting from Shield Wall. You are two squares to the right of Malthir at the moment, with Talia's rear end two squares to the right of Karina. Is that the correct position for you, or did you want to line up next to Malthir?

DM AK - various questions/notes:

- What action is it to pass Kressle's weapons to her (move, I'd say), and does that provoke AoO - for her, for me for both of us? This is a moot point since Tusky already took his AoO, but may be relevant later.
- By the rules of Mounted Combat, I should be able to use my mounts move action to get into position, and then my own to hand Kressle her weapons, right?
- Based on my interpretation of Inspire Courage, it also affects the horses (not language-dependent). Please let me know if you disagree.
- I'm conducting my movement based on what is described, but since I can't see the updated map, it may not be possible. The object is to end up adjacent to Kressle, in position to provide flanking to Mal and/or Edric.
- When calculating Att and dmg for Shadow, I'm including bonuses from IC, Edrics challenge, flanking and bless.

Casimir clenched his face in frustration at Kressel's death-defying charge.

Foolish! I had not though she was that desperate to redeem herself as to charge a Dire Boar unarmed. Let's hope we can strike it down before it guts her completely.

Not sure if it will make a difference but Cas forgot to add his +1 to attack for being mounted, so his total to hit should be 15, we can use all of the help we can. Doesn't his horse also get a bite attack or is that just Talia?

Tusky is large, so no +1. And Shadow is a riding horse, where Talia is heavy.

Incorrect, the heavy horse has no place as anything other than a variant. Talia is an animal companion and is treated quite differently from a horse, with differing ability scores.

Karina takes a shot at Ol' Tusky with her crossbow, aiming carefully to avoid her allies, but the shot glancing off the boar's hide.

1d20 ⇒ 12

Edric's rolls are already up so I will use them. Talia ca't make any attacks unless Edric maneuvers the horse, so I'll assume he does that and takes the AOO. Also Malthir won't benefit from shield wall unless he does it so...

Edric maneuvers himself into position next to Malthir, and Tuskgutter responds by goring at the somewhat nervous Talia. Just as the gore is about to strike, Edric barely manages to maneuer the horse out of the way in a display of incredible horsemanship.

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 3) + 9 = 16

Edric has his pre-rolled ride check that just happened to meet the DC using Mounted Combat, so i'll make a second one on his behalf for Talia attacking- 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17, alright but as she had to move, first attack roll only.

With Edric in position, he rams his lance through Tuskgutter's tough hide, dealing 10 points of damage with a well placed lunge. Talia atempts a bite but completely misses.

The wounded Kressle pulls out a potion and quickly quaffs it while Tuskgutter is distracted attacking Talia.

2d8 + 3 ⇒ (8, 4) + 3 = 15

Vaysh and Malthir are up, and then i'll take Fenna's action.

I am going to wait to see what Fenna does before taking my action so I will probably move my INIT to 4 or less.

Noted. I'll wait on Vaysh then.

Female Human, Rostlander Celestial Sorcerer 2

Vaysh looks frustrated, He is too powerful for my magic. She moves for a clear shot as her divine radiance begins to form up around her hand. Then a beam of radiance fires off from her hand towards the boar. Mayhaps this will work, though normally it has no effect on animals.

Heavenly Fire 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 Damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Move for a reasonably clear shot at the boar, though not too close to it.

Vaysh Only:

Your character would know with certainty that that ability won't work on an animal and i'm loathe to see your econd round of having no effect :(. As your character would know that, I suggest you retcon targetting Malthir with that dice roll and damage as healing instead ^^^. Just a thought, i'll stick with the original action if you insist.

Your Humble Narrator

Ok, to keep things moving- Vaysh would have known that the heavenly fire wouldn't work on the Boar, so i'm going to retcon that the heavenly fire was targeted at Malthir- Malthir heal 4HP.

Fenna's Action-

Fenna steps next to Casimir's horse and readies an action to heal Malthir when he moves into an adjacent square. This means you can take a move action and still attack Malthir. Tusky's AOO has already happened this round.

Heal Amount- Only Read if you Move into an adjacent square Malthir:

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

This means Malthir acts at initiative count 4- Over to you M.

I'm back.

DM_AK:
While riding Dandelion (with a 40' movement rate), I think Fenna could have gotten to Malthir's side and cast cure light wounds... I don't think it'll make much difference either way though, so we might as well keep it as you posted.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

The boar makes a vicious attack on Malthir, who is suprised by how little damage he seems to take from the great creature. As he brings his sword and shield around for another attack he feels a wetness running down his leg. He suddenly staggers for a second, something not feeling right.
Not believing that he would soil himself in combat he looks down to see a large quantity of his own blood flowing freely down his leg. The strange pressing in his armor, that strange feeling, was probably his innards, barely restrained from falling out onto the ground by his armor and his belt. Seeing the long length of blood on one of its great tusks, Tuskgutter must have slipped it under his breastplate and disembowled him. Stunned for a few seconds, he is hit by a hot flash of heavenly energy from Vaysh, he then staggers next to Fenna whom he sees has moved up, who touches him and the blood slows down to a trickle. He gets a little more of his senses back and steps up to attack the beast, pretty cautiously.

Not sure if I still have the flank so I will not add it in, add +2 to this if I still have it:

For the Guardians! Still umbalanced by the massive blow, Malthir almost falls over as his attack completely misses the great beast.

pwr atk w/fight def 1d20 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 3 = 7 dam 1d8 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 1 = 12

My AC is 22 if I still have the shield wall.
