If we all fail, we can roll new characters as the pharasmite reinforcements! Also I’ll use my harrow point for +1 AC for this encounter.

Cyric manages to shake off the effect of the deadly "dance", swinging his mace as he calls to the Lady of Graves. With a resounding crunch, the mace comes down and finishes the destruction Bashiel and Kalem had started. With one down, he steps over the deanimated pile of bones, past Kalem, and eyes the other necrophidius.

Zamanda's arrow strikes the second insect-like creature clinging to Kalem and, while it is not enough to kill the beast, it does force it to dislodge and try to fly away.

The remaining necrophidius tries to slither its way through the grease but is wholly unable to find any traction, slipping and sliding uselessly as bone slips against greased stone.

The stirge that had attached itself to Kalem detaches, an arrow embedded in its abdomen. It circles about once, twice, then makes to flee out the exit and to the surface.

From the south, you hear a voice, slightly muffled, "I think it's working... they're still fighting, but a lot fewer of them all of a sudden!"

More distant, "Then get up there and finish it!"

And the closer voice once more, "Suicide isn't what I signed up for... the skull-serpents can handle it."

Heroes, go!

The acolyte waits for Varor to step near, then casts Protection from Evil on the elf. That done, he moves to threaten the skull-headed serpent.

At least the grease worked for a round! That could buy us a brief respite. Good luck, Varor and Zamanda (and Cyric!)!

The thing caught in the grease looks kind of like an undead, so Zamanda reaches back for her blunt arrows instead of the normal ones.

Realizing that his scimitar was useless in this fight, and that Kalem was too disoriented to be of any help for the time being, Varor sheathes his blade and takes the hammer from the dazed man and moves to help Cyric against the necrophidius.

Belial's Maps; Dispater's Maps

Varor, did you have to make a double-move? If you were within your 20', I'll give you an attack as I'm treating the handoff of Kalem's weapon as a free action for you.

Zamanda's specially designed arrow cracks into the bones of the monstrosity, cracking and shattering the skeletal construct. Varor moves up as Cyric casts a spell of holy protection upon him, then the acolyte follows up.

The necrophidius lunges at Cyric, sinking its fangs deep into his thigh. The acolyte screams in pain but manages to avoid the worst effect of the creature's bite: paralysis.

In response, the Pharasmite swings his mace but his aim is thrown off by the savage bite. He takes a guarded step back to reassess and hopefully draw the creature out for a flanking attack.

Zamanda and Varor, go!

Zamanda's arrows strike another blow against the creature as more cracks and fissures appear. Varor's strike is only barely avoided.

After dodging Varor's blow, the necrophidius lunges at his outstretched arm and buries its fangs in deep.

Zamanda, a worried expression on her face, and wondering how long she can afford to stay and fight if everyone else goes down, attacks again.

Apparently, Zamanda's stress over the situation is affecting her aim.

With one combatant paralyzed, the necrophilius shifts its attention back to the already wounded acolyte but the grease throws it off balance and it misses wildly.

Zamanda fires off another arrow, this one well aimed and fracturing more of the construct's skeleton. The necrophidius, ignoring the paralyzed Varor, lunges forward to strike at the Pharasmite and manages to gain enough purchase to propel it out of the grease.

It bites again, drawing more blood and the acolyte begins to turn pale from the loss, but he also succumbs to the paralysis. Zamanda fires off another arrow, this time going wide, and the necrophidius turns its attention to her. As it has to move around a column, it is unable to charge, and is unable to attack before she is able to react.

I'm going to call that 7 rounds and that Varor also comes out of his Paralysis. I may have the numbers off slightly but...

Pel shakes his head as he recovers from the dazing.

I'm... still alive? is the first thought that comes to his mind.

Rut, is his second.

He curses himself silently and wishes the two had been reversed.

You have to be alive to help him, dummy, is his third.

Wrapped up so much in his own thoughts, it takes him a few seconds to register that the bone fiend yet lives. There would surely be more enemies to come, so with his magical reserves running low and his arrows unlikely to prove effective, Pel finds himself awkwardly encouraging his fellow party members.

"Take it down! It can't have much strength left!"

Bashiel gives the aasimar a brief dazed smile before wiping already cold sweat (having cooled down while he was frozen in place) from his forehead. "I-I don't think we're going to have too much time to recover. I think a cultist is bringing this news back."

Bashiel recovers his dropped weapons and heads over the the paralyzed acolyte of Pharasma, who becomes un-paralyzed by the time Bashiel reaches him. He extends a hand in greeting to the man, saying "You came right in time, though I wish more of the brothers and sisters would have joined you." He shakes his head "No, I'm glad to have anyone who is brave enough to stand against these Urgathoans. The name's Bashiel." He fishes a potion of CLW out of his bandolier and passes it to the injured priest.

Bashiel looks over his allies with a conflicted expression on his face. "I feel compelled to continue, to not let up in face of these cultists. But if they have any more of those necrophidii serving them... Lets just say we came through that with some incredible luck." He winces "What I'm trying to say is that I know its a stupid idea, but I'm worried about what will happen if we rest."

He turns back to Cyric and says "Do you think this is enough evidence to bring the rest of your temple to take arms?"

You guys are all insane. We *all* almost die twice, and you know it is a stupid idea, but you want to continue? I mean, I get it, it is the best chance of saving the girl... but we can't save her if we're dead. Don't you think we should at least inform Cressida?

Seeing that everyone has truly gone insane, she sighs.

Well, I'm still coming with you, but just for the record, we're walking into a death trap for the third time, eyes wide open. Nothing about this is a good idea.

More bugs too, I'm sure, and I still have no spells, and I doubt if Varor retrieved his holy symbol. We're going to die.

[CAMPAIGN COMPLETE: BECAME KALEM LIGHTSWORN]

Kalem sighed. ”Zamanda is right.” Reluctantly he started walking further in. ”Here is hoping that the reason they didn’t rush us when we were all out like that is because we’ve already broken their defenses.”

Ilsa stands mutely as the others discuss the situation, unsure if she is still frozen or if she can move.

She lifts a hand in front of her face, just to check. Though she can move, all she sees is rotten flesh like a corpse ripening for a fortnight.

She quickly puts her hand down, not wanting to look at it.

"We--I can't wait. If we leave now, they could escape by another way. Maybe we killed their strongest defenders...or maybe it was just bad luck we all fell under that thing's spell. I vote we keep going, even if we send someone back for more help."

Once Cyric's paralysis passes, he nearly collapses but catches himself on one of the ossuary's columns with one hand, clasping his holy symbol with the other.

"Pharasma, give us strength to see this place restored."

Everyone is healed for 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11 damage.

Though still wounded, he sighs in relief as the worst of it stops bleeding and scabs over, some color coming back to his face.

"How are the rest of you? Do you need healing?" He nods to Ilsa and others, "This is a vile sacrilege of a place of eternal rest. I will come with you but I fear no more help will be coming tonight from the temple."

"Thank you Cyric, your goddess' blessings shine on us. If you're joining us, please drink the potion I gave you, you still look worn out. If we won't have any more aid from your temple tonight, we need to take care of you at least." Bashiel thinks to himself for a moment then continues "I think you're right Kalem, they must not have felt like we would be easy to finish off."

Bashiel straightens, takes a deep breath and continues "That bodes well for us. We should advance now but keep our eyes out for any traps. If we see another of those necrophidii, we prioritize destroying it above all else."

He closes his eyes for a moment, whispers "Osiris protect us" and then heads back to the three way branch. (I assume the grease is gone by now?)

I like the idea of sending a message to Cressida, but I don't want to split the party :> We're going to have a hard enough time without making it even harder!

As the paralysis wears off Varor moves and rubs his stiff muscles until Cyric cast his healing energy, ridding him of the pains of paralysis and healing the bite mark on his arm. He draws out his scimitar and pointed towards the warrens where he heard the footsteps. "No, informing Cressida would take too long and we all need to be here now. Whoever and whatever is left in here needs to be dealt with, alive or dead. We can't risk word getting out to any other cultist in the city about who we are specifically."

"I wish we had time to get the guard, but we don't," Ilsa says.

I wish I felt as brave as I sound...I can barely talk with this lump in my throat.

"We need to keep going before they have time to escape..."

Btw, Bashiel has the Aura of Reckless Courage class feature. If anyone needs a morale bonus vs. fear, come over to within 10ft of the 3-way intersection :D. Spooky Osiris magics will make you more brave! Roleplaying bravery not necessarily included. Side effects may include character death. Terms and Conditions apply.

Bashiel, I'm going to need the terms and conditions spelled out so I can quickly scroll through them before accepting them in a matter of seconds.

Pel sends a sad smile in Ilsa's direction. He thinks he knows a little bit about how she feels given his own situation. Still, it will hardly do to act like he is in the same boat. It's hardly a one-to-one comparison and Ilsa's niece is also, hopefully, close at hand.

"If she's here, Ilsa, we'll find her. Let's go before they have more time to prepare or to summon or create more of those things."

From his position in the intersection, Bashiel peers to the west and south east. He tries to hear if anything is coming from either direction.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 6 - 1 = 9

He whispers back towards his allies "I think I saw a cultist going this way" he points to the south east "But there is another tunnel to the west that one of those bone snakes came from. Push after the cultist first, or clear our flank first?"

Varor looks both ways while considering his options before turning to Bashiel. "Cultist first. That way we know that we're not wasting our time."

"The terms and conditions are just the usual boilerplate. Really, not worth reading. Standard language. Just sign; it'll be fine," says the contract devil.

The Pharasmite nods appreciatively to Bashiel as he quaffs the potion. "Thank you. I'd use a spell, but I fear we may need them. As for the temple... I'm afraid I'm all the assistance there is for now. The Gravewarden and senior priests are in communion and left strict instructions to not be disturbed. The unpleasantness plaguing the city has them deeply concerned." He shrugs as he looks deeper into the dead warrens. "Personally, I think this should be sufficient to interrupt them, but the Gravewarden is rather strict and... unyielding." As he speaks, the potion does its work and heals most of the rest of his wounds, leaving only traces of the injuries he suffered.

As he speaks, you are all touched by the sense of Pharasma's blessing of your endeavor. You feel invigorated and struck with insights into your particular crafts. Everyone levels up; see note in Discussion thread.

Bashiel peers down the branching tunnels. He tries to listen for any dangers that may be lurking but the blood still rings in his ears. To the southeast, he sees three wooden tables standing in the middle of the room. A large mound of something rests on one of the tables.
