Tricks and talents, huh. "So, we now have admission in full for being complicit in a kidnapping, right?", Garvid glances around with a flat expression on his face. "I'm not the damn expert here, but when you were doing the mind-reading, Lordship, you were chanting those weird words and playing with that coin." Turning back to Meliya, he shrugs. "My experience, that's how normal magic works.", he spits out the words. "But anyway... If you'll permit me one last question, your Ladyship.", his lips curl. "I couldn't help but notice Avidexu here shouting for Vimanda to help, and not Meliya. And, Hells, I was half thinking there's a third Arkona about, but at some point, even your master-crafted h%%@!#&+$ ain't enough to cover up all the stink your family's kicked up." He grits his teeth.

Pulling out a set of worn steel manacles from his back, he nods. "So, Meliya or Vimanda or whatever your name is. We're arresting you for kidnapping, conspiracy to dispose of bodies, accessory to cannibalism and consorting with demons." His face is an impervious mask, though in his thoughts there's only fury. "If you play your cards right, I'll speak on your behalf. You might even avoid the gallows. Now drop the knives and turn around.", he orders with a commanding voice, moving to chain Meliya up.

And if you think about making my day..., he closes his eyes, his thoughts intensifying towards Meliya, images start filling his mind. The broken, bleeding Gray Maiden helmet in the hospice. The disembodied horse-headed demon, sprawling in filth amidst a dozen cultists in the bellows of the palace. The corrupted form of Andaisin lying festering on the marble floors. The decapitated forms of the Red Mantis assassins in the basement, heads neatly in tow with a signed writ next to their feet. Senshiir's concaved ribcage on the cold floors of the torture room.

...you go right ahead, sunshine. Won't be the first.

We're pretty badass, guys. Also, we have an amulet of protection against divination, if someone wants to grab that. I'd imagine it's pretty useful right now, but you don't need to be a mindreader right now to know what Garvid's thinking.

Meliya crinkles her eyebrows. ”Vimanda is the name of one of Chamidu’s heralds. Avidexu was no doubt beseeching our goddess for divine intervention as he sought to protect the temple.”

The Lady Arkona hesitates a moment, but then extends her hands. ”Very well. 'Arrest' me on the lawless island of Endrin; what was once known as Old Korvosa. Your jurisdiction is meaningless here, you are very well aware. You are only holding me hostage. If you think to use me as a bargaining chip, you will be sorely disappointed. Glorio will kill us all. It is ironic, as I am the best protection you would have had against him.”

”And where to now? Will you push me first into the viper pits of the Vivified Labyrinth? Am I to drink first of the poisoned cup?”

Li glares at Meliya, her blade millimeters from slicing fabric and skin, "Ya keep sayin' what a big help ya be ta us but ya ain't speakin' plain-like an' ya ain't tellin' us nothin' we ain't be knowin'. Vencarlo be in tha labyrinth but ya need ta be tellin' us where he be in tha labyrinth. If'n we be knowin' where he be then we c'n be keepin' tha elephants from movin' tha labyrinth an' be keepin' tha right pattern."

Kynes shrugs noncommittally. His trained investigator talents have been stymied, and he could not reason his way to the truth here. More evidence was required. We will not know the nay of yea of it standing here, bind her but keep the key close, and let us proceed. Lord Talfryn, does she posses magical items that you can perceive? Those should be confiscated.

The relevant knowledge (religion) check for Chamidu was placed in this post. Unfortunately, no one was able to make it. Knowledge of Chamidu itself has a high DC. Knowledge of their heralds would be even higher. Anyone with Knowledge (religion) who hasn't previously made a check for Chamidu is welcome to do so.

Garvid chuckles at the mention of Vimanda and Chamidu's heralds. as he cuffs Meliya's hands behind her back with no regards to comfort. "Right, right.", he chuckles loudly. "Vimanda, Vudrani goddess of being a frequent pen-pal of disgraced guards. The exact type of deity that sends her heralds to Korvosan balls and mails them daggers. Cut the s~&%." Grabbing the manacles, Garvid ties a piece of rope around their chain, coils it a couple of times and ties it to his belt as Meliya continues on, the 'lawless' and 'meaningless' comments drawing his ire as he clamps the chains tightly.

You're just pissing me off on purpose now, Arkona... Gritting his teeth, he adds."For a useless jurisdiction, we're sure getting a lot done. You're an arrestee, not a hostage. You're at my side at all times. If anyone dangerous is in front of me, you hide behind me.", he relays, grasping the manacles as he nods Meliya towards Li. "Guardswoman Li, care to check if our arrestee has something she shouldn't have on her?", before noticing the wincing in both hers and Talfryn's side.

Spell Sunder:

Wondered how to describe the dispelling part on a debuff, but here it is. Spell Sunder is a supernatural ability, too, though.

"Here's my trick." I've no idea if that'd work against magic, but now's not the time., he says, gesturing for Li to give him her hand. Gripping her hand in his, he continues. "Focus on the pain. Then think about what you've got to do, right." He exhales, his face turning red for a brief moment as he squeezes. "Then, you get angry. Really, really angry, at yourself, and at the pain. Reach into your head, and squeeze the pain, breathe out, grit your teeth and keep squeezing it until it gives." Squeezing a little more, he adds with a grin. "Because you're a lot more persistent than the pain, and you just don't have the time for that."

Li has gone through so much with Garvid that she doesn't even hesitate when he gestures for her hand. Placing her hand in his she looks up at him expectantly.

It takes her a moment to actually focus on the pain because normally she would just ignore the pain until it faded into the background. She looks doubtful when Garvid tells her to get angry at it. "Be angry? Really?" Then she nods as she takes a breath, "Alright, I be trustin' ya." Then she gives a small smile, "An' there be somethin' freein' about bein' giv'n permission ta just be angry."

Li squeezes her eyes shut and focuses on pushing out the pain from her body as she squeezes back on Garvid's hand. Her other hand balls into a fist and her whole body tenses before a visceral yell erupts from the normally quiet rogue.

She slowly opens her eyes and looks around, "Did it be workin'?

Feeling like a weight has been lifted off of her, Li grins and gives Garvid a quick hug of thanks before turning back to business. Her smile disappears and her eyes harden as she regards Meliya. "Ta be warnin' ya, this search will be involvin' discomfort on yer part." The rogue roughly handles the captive as she searches Meliya's body for anything hidden.

I haven’t had a chance to create a token for Meliya so I’ll continue to use the “Vencarlo” token for the time being. :).

The party returns to the entrance to the labyrinth with its tiger guardians. You huddle together and activate the levers, one, twice, until you arrive at the dungeon orientation in which you were united with Meliya. Here again you pass the threatening murals of predators feeding on many hapless people, your own likenesses among them.

Just beyond, the walls, floor, and ceiling of the adjacent chamber are decorated with a complex mosaic depicting an immense swarm of angry wasps.

Meliya glares, tugging with hands drawn behind her back on the rope rigging her to Garvid. "You'd send a bound woman first? To see what happens? If that's the sort you are, perhaps I made a mistake siding with you over Glorio. You're just as savage."

I'm assuming that Li doesn't find anything with her more thorough search of Meliya?

Li makes sure to mark the walls with chalk as they make their way back to where they had thought they'd found Vencarlo. A shiver runs up her spine as she passes the mural and sees someone that looks too much like her having her intestines ripped out by the claws of a large animal. No matter how many times they passed this mural by, she doubted she would get used to seeing herself somewhere her likeness shouldn't be.

She clutches her crossbow tighter in anticipation of danger as they move forward with Meliya's direction.

Li doesn't know much about magic but in her mind it's the only explanation for seeing what they do in the mosaics. "I be thinkin' this place be more magic than not. That be tha only explanation fer some o' tha things we be seein' down here."

The mosaics of predators seem to unnerve Garvid little. "Hope you didn't have any money riding on that.", he goads Meliya, as he stares at the wall for a moment. Grinning at Kynes' words, he replies, "Stop teasing the prisoner, Kynes." Holding the manacles in one hand as he escords Meliya, he furrows his brows at the depictions of the wasps. "You think there's a wasp nest around here?", he asks nobody in particular as he stops by the door. "In that case, we ought to be as quiet as possible. Arkona, you think there's a floor plate or something beyond?", he turns to Meliya.

I think if there's no visible traps, Garvid will gladly give the rope some slack to keep Meliya in the middle and go forwards quietly.

Walls that moved at the flick of a switch, mosaics that threatened whoever passed by. This was how these Arkonas chose to spend their fortune, and yet people starved in the streets of Old Korvosa every day. When all this's over, an' we done whatever Zellara needs from us, I'm sellin' all o' th' magic mumbo jumbo, gettin' a little bitty house for me, an' th' res' goes back t' someone else. I ain't stayin' wrapped up in all o' this nonsense. Least we got someone t' guide us through now, if she don' turn on us an' turn the maze 'gainst us too.

In the interest of time we’ll fast forward.

The party navigates through the labyrinth, narrowly avoiding angry wasps, whirling blades, deafening wails, and biting tiger heads. Meliya offers warnings of some dangers; for others, she pleads ignorance.

At last, you reach the end of the labyrinth. A final door, engraved with a single tiger’s head. ”Vencarlo is there,” Meliya confirms.

A great green throne sits atop a dais in the northern end of the room. To either side stand statues of a tiger-headed man - each holds aloft a pair of chains from which manacles dangle. Dried blood spatters the walls, the floor, and even the throne and statues, filling the room with its stale reek.

A regal darksphinx, a creature with a lion’s body, falcon’s wings, a barbed tail, and a woman’s torso, guards the room. Her head is crowned with a set of ram’s horns, her eyes glow a deep red, and she wields a pair of shimmering kukris. Meliya shrinks back, clearly afraid.

The sphinx’s current victim is manacled to the western statue. Dressed in tattered rags, his body a display of bruises and partially healed cuts and scrapes, Vencarlo Orisini lies unconscious.

Knowledge (planes) DC 21:
This creature is a darksphinx, a dangerous outsider called from one of the deeper circles of Hell. In the Outer Planes, darksphinxes are keepers of hidden secrets and forbidden knowledge.

The creature can see through invisibility, and has a variety of DR, resistances, and immunities. A higher roll will reveal more details

Sensing the sudden tension in the party ahead, the Shoanti shaman reaches for her weasel and sets him on the ground with a few whispered words. Mouse feels a furry body against her calf and her skin tightening as magic courses through her body.

Cast Stoneskin on Mouse, DR 10/adamantine, 100 minutes duration, ignores a total of 100 HP of damage from a non-adamantine weapon.

Kynes take a quick moment to study the demon only to find himself staggered by the raw malice the demon exuded. Kynes forces himself to swallow, before moving into action. Removing from his belt a pellet containing the essence of Popobala, Kynes again seeks its ghastly form. Kynes runs forward, even as wings and fangs begin to sprout like dark seedlings, even as his eyes fuse into a single orbit. SSSSSSSssssss.

Buffs: Barkskin, Monstrous Physique I, Strength Mutagen, Gravelly Tonic, also not flat footed.

Talfryn pales at the sight of their foe - never has he dreamed of facing off against one of the greater denizens of hell. Still, the sight of Vancarlo girds his courage, and he draws forth on his eldritch might to bring ruin to the darksphinx.

"Master Garvid!" Talfryn's voice is at once imperious and slightly querulous. "If you would be so kind?"

And then the mage unleashes his spell, casting Telekinetic Charge upon the guard, hurling him forth into combat.

From the Telekinetic Charge description: If your ally lands adjacent to an opponent, he can spend an immediate action to make a melee attack against that opponent with a +2 bonus on the attack roll.

Talfryn and Kynes jointly determine that the sphinx also has immunity to poison and resistance to acid, cold, electricity, and fire.

Seeing the unnatural creature before her and witnessing Meliya's response to its mere presence, Li reacts on instinct and begins firing crossbow bolts at what should be vulnerable parts of its body.

Li has bleeding attack and debilitating injury with her sneak attack so if her attacks hit then Sivit also takes 5 points of bleeding damage (as well as at the beginning of each round) and is disoriented giving her a -2 to all her attack rolls, -4 against Li

Although the dice roller is against me so everything I just typed may be moot because I'm not sure they hit her

As the creature is revealed, Zellara’s warnings return with a flash of insight. You gain +2 on int-based checks and +1 “caster” level for your extracts during this encounter.

Slinky’s touch grants Mouse enhanced defenses. Kyne’s appearance once more transforms into a hideous amalgum of fangs and wings. Talfryn’s spell sends Garvid hurtling through the chamber. Li’s arrows follow and overtake the flying guard, though they merely slam into the wall behind the throne (misses both).

Garvid lands firmly just before the sphinx, slashing furiously with the blade twice before impaling the creature’s abdomen. Even with its remarkably thickened hide, the wounds are grievous and blood splatters the throne. (3 hits subject to DR)

The darksphinx rises up on her hind legs, crashing down upon Garvid with a flurry of kukri strikes. Her barbed tail whips around, raking him savagely across the back. (13+10+15+8 dmg to Garvid before DR)

Bolts, fists, scarves, and blades soon bring the darksphinx to the ground. She's nearly tapped out; another round would certainly end this fight.

On the body you find two wands, an extremely large leather armor, and two large, magical kukris. (Loot updated).

The broken Vencarlo lies chained to the western statue. He is unconscious, suffering from starvation and exhaustion, but wakens after only moderate healing.

Although beaten and in pain, his expression brightens immediately upon seeing you. He even manages a weak smile. ”It’s quite a delight to see you… The key, yes, it’s there in the throne’s cushion…”

Once freed and healed, he leaps to his feet and embraces Neolandus with a hug. ”Neolandus! You’re alive! I feared the worst. How did you find us?”

”And you--” he seethes, turning on Meliya. ”Had I my trusted sword I doubt I could stay my hand from striking you down where you stand. You and that treacherous cousin of yours!” He turns to the rest of you. ”What do you meant to do with her? And what of Glorio? Whatever you decide, I urge you to get us out of the city. I thought we might find safety on this island, but now I see that nowhere within the city’s walls are safe.”

”Vencarlo’s right,” Neolandus adds, looking around. ”The question is, where do we go from here?”

Wiping the creature's blood from his halberd, Garvid gives Vencarlo a half-smile, reaching for the bag at his side. Blackjack's rapier, daggers and armour come out of the seemingly too small container. Holding the rapier in the scabbard, hilt forwards, he takes a step towards Vencarlo, offering him the weapon. Can't say I blame him, but if we start murdering unarmed people, everything's going to go to s@*+. Even deeper s$!@.

"I'll give you that if you promise to hold off on giving her what she deserves, for now.", he grunts out, tugging the rope holding Meliya bound to him. At the question of the next step, the guardsman rubs a hand on his chin. "We're marching to the top of the tower and grabbing this one's solly sop of a cousin. Or brother.", he shakes the ropes. "F#~&, I don't even know.", Garvid adds with an angry tone, starting to pace around in place.

Can we even turn them in? What if-, his minds starts racing, before glancing straight into Meliya's face. "I'm done thinking ahead. Next thing on the list is getting Glorio in chains, if he cooperates. We'll discuss out what to do next when we're somewhere she can't read our damn heads."

Li rushes over to Vencarlo, "I be havin' ya free in a jiffy." When he mentions the key she grins, "That be workin' also." Jogging over to the cushion, she grabs the key and quickly makes her way back to unlock his chains. "It be good ta be seein' tha real Vencarlo."

Li nods along with Garvid's words, "We be needin' ta be gettin' outta this place first before we be plannin' tha future."

Her presence is circumstantially indicative, and by familial blood, suspect...but, by what crimes do you accuse Meliya? Let us now lodge the accusation formally, so that we may, formally, make the arrest.

Where to go indeed...if even the wealthiest estates in Korvosa hid this kind of madness, was there anywhere left to go? There was the Fordyce estate, but if Neolandus was so highly wanted by the Queen, it was only a matter of time before his presence there would bring down retribution, and there were the kids to think of... Garvid's reminder of Meliya's strange abilities stops that train of thought, and Mouse glances suspiciously at the noblewoman for a moment before settling into stripping off the strange dead creature's armor, trying one swing of the long knife before deciding against further drilling. There ain't no way you're hidin' somethin' this long, an' 's jus' one more thing t' keep track of...I'll keep on jus' hittin' 'em, she muses to herself with a slight smile despite the seriousness of the situation.

As the others debate on what to do next, Yaziyah tends to Vencarlo, applying healing and restorative magic to bring him on his feet and as close to healthy as she can manage. "Here, have some water and something to eat." She glances at Meliya as the talk turns to formal accusations. Will she try to defend herself? Flee? Twist their heads around her finger some more?

She is not as hellbent on justice as Kynes and Garvid, and is too tired to try to unravel the tangled threads of the Arkonas. She turns back to Vencarlo, opening her mouth to ask a question, but then Garvid mentions Meliya reading their heads and she shuts it. She is burning to know what Neolandus knows about the Queen, and plan their actions from there. She can't simply leave the city and watch it consume itself behind them.

Vencarlo’s eyes fall in embarrassment. ”Of course, I am no slave to passion. I’ve trained many years to maintain control. If that training should fail me against the likes of the Arkonas it would be of poor quality, indeed. But, these pieces? They are not mine?” He accepts the rapier clumsily. ”Wherever did you find them?”

Kynes wrote:

Vencarlo’s right fist, short by two fingers, clenches. ”Kidnapping, torture! At least in facilitating such acts! She may not have laid hands on me directly, but she and Glorio invited us into their den, only to have their guards seize us and deliver us into this....place, whatever it is.”

For her part, Meliya seems defiant. ”I am no angel, but you have imprisoned the lesser of two evils. Glorio’s machinations are far, far more sinister than mine, and his wrath shall be legendary. My advice to you is to flee the mansion. If you will not, then let me help you in the fight against him. He will not surrender to you willingly.”

Actions? There are two obvious choices: face Glorio, or attempt to flee the mansion without the confrontation.

This chamber hardly seems to be part of a palace, but looks more like a clearing at the heart of a vast jungle, teeming with life. The sky above is a deep, cloudless blue, while in the distance, hazy towers rise above the verdant canopy. Exotic bird calls fill the air, the scent of dozens of unfamiliar flowers and plants assault the nose, and everywhere a riot of color demands the eye, whether it’s the wing of a tropical bird, the petals of a brightly hued flower, or the glittering multicolored tiles that make up a round fountain to the north. The fountain’s central plume is a stone pillar around which entwine two cobra statues that clutch green gems in their fanged maws. To the south of the fountain stands an immense, life-sized jade statue of an elephant, a howdah perched on its back, its tusks and trunk raised high in greeting to the southeast doors. From inside the room, the doors look more like gates set into a wrought-iron fence that encircles the garden. Other gates set in this fence doubtless lead to other parts of the palace, and after a bit more observation, the somewhat static nature of the jungle and landscape becomes apparent—the walls of this garden are in fact an incredibly realistic and clever painting of a Vudrani junglescape.

Glorio stands in the doorway leading into the mansion. New arrivals accompany him in the chamber. To the west, a large water elemental cascades within the garden’s fountain. He has activated the jade elephant which, now a living creature, trumpets its displeasure at your arrival. Within the howdah on its back crouch two servants.

He smiles in his customary fashion. ”My friends! You’ve know idea what displeasure this brings me.” He chuckles. ”You are stubborn, however. I see you have found my sister--”

Meliya hisses, cursing in a strange tongue.

Infernal:
You fool! You damn us both!

Glorio ignores her. ”Found her, and listened to her. Or at least trusted her enough to let her live. You’ve slain my servants, Avidexu, Senshiir, Sivit. You’ve survived the labyrinth. And still…” His jaw clenches, a sudden and savage fury rising within him. ”...You refuse to die.”

Glorio’s face transforms, his human features melting away to reveal the true beast within.

”Noooooo!” Meliyah wails with genuine agony, falling to her knees.

Within the howdah, the servants also shapeshift into fiends. They each grow six colorful vipers in place of arms, and a long, forked tongues slip from their mouths.

Glorio Arkona, raskshasa reincarnated, peels back his lips, revealing a maw of fangs. ”I will show you the error of your ways.”

The hairs on the back of Li's neck seem to stand on end as the air begins to crackle with energy. It's just enough warning that something dangerous is coming her way and she is able to avoid Glorio's lightening strike.

As she moves, she releases the bolt in her crossbow. But as usual, she doesn't stop at one. Her deft fingers quickly load another one sending a second bolt flying after the first.

Li’s first bolt disappears into the lush vegetation of the garden. Her second strikes Glorio square in the chest, but it bounces off of him like a cheap toy! DR He bellows with laughter. ”You will find your little weapons less effective against the likes of me. An unfortunate situation. Avishandi, Nudhaali! Keep the large one busy while I shred the scraps. Carnochan will be aghast at the mess, but sacrifices must be made.”

The jade elephant’s howdah is now a pit of writhing vipers that grow from the arms of Glorio’s servants. Each glows briefly before spitting a bolt of magic venom. Six fly at Garvid! Note these are ranged touch attacks, and you are flat-footed.

Wow, Talfryn, you really have a lot of HP. Less now, but still...

Garvid barely has time to open his mouth, before the arcane forces of all the elements strike him in the chest, lighting arcing across his armour, flames and ice latching onto his face. For a second, he appears to bowl over. Not by those damn snakes, and not by this damn... whatever it is. Lifting his head, he snarls back with a face rivaling Glorio's in its bestial expression, as he grips his halberd and stands tall, clothes ablaze.

Just posting the results for my saves, in case the elephant and the water elemental decide to go for me instead of someone else.

That'd be me at 51/101. So, if they're going off of bloodied/non-bloodied stats, they'd be disappointed! Proooobably going to go for a Con Rage for the first time ever, I'll see how the combat looks like in a turn. Hopefully, not dead.
