Treading north, you find that the walls of the oddly shaped hallway are decorated in a complex mural depicting a hot, steaming jungle brimming with hungry life. Predators of every sort stalk and maim and feed on dozens of hapless people. In the canopy above, monkeys, snakes, and birds seem to chatter and mock the victims below.

Upon closer inspection, you swiftly find yourselves among the victims represented.

Rounding the corner, you stumble upon another arcane symbol drawn upon the floor, this one glowing a soothing shade of lavender.

Neolandus immediately falls to the floor, unconscious.

Everyone must make a DC 22 Will save or succumb to the symbol of sleep.

Kynes and Li do not find any traps on the next door, and it opens easily into a short hall. Entering the chamber reveals yet another rune-inscribed floor, this one glowing a shocking shade of ultramarine.

Anyone who looks is subject to a DC 24 Will save or is stunned for a short period of time.

The final room reveals nothing further. Frustrating, although consistent with Talfryn’s assessment that you are being toyed with. What sort of dungeon is this, and what sort of person would utilize such methods?

Returning to the lever, the group huddles near together and Li gives it a firm yank. The dungeon again rotates, the directionality difficult to assess. The massive rumbling ceases, revealing an open hallway to the north.

Stumbling into view is the ragged form of Vencarlo Orisini, master of swords.

”Neolandus!” he gasps, wide eyed, stumbling to his knees. ”Vencarlo!” Neolandus runs forward and clasps him around the shoulders. ”Please!” the seneschal turns back, ”Help him! Are you alright?”

"All things considered...not bad," Vencarlo jests. "Glorio, that scoundrel, has had me roaming aimlessly through all manner of hazards. He must pay! The man is a black mark on Korvosa, responsible for unspeakable crimes! I'm glad you've found Neolandus, of course, but Glorio is the higher priority! Do you know the way? We return to the surface at once, to slay him where he stands!"

Garvid rises groggily on his feet, before his eyes flare in panic, angrily looking around. Spotting only his comrades and no multi armed monstrosities, seems to quiet down. "Abadar-forsaken scribbly magic...", he mutters, and after being shocked into a stupor by the ultramarine glyphs, his mouth purses in a pale line, the quiet grit of teeth barely audible in the silent halls.

The sight of Vencarlo seems to give the man a slight relief, but at the Lamplighter's inquiry, he furrows his brow as he steps towards the seneschal. "That's a good question. You'd understand us being cautious in a place where nothing is as it appears.", his hand curls around his halberd as he stares into Vencarlo's eyes. "And even the damn walls are out to get us.", he mutters. "Anyone else's head humming, or did I hit hit the ground harder than I thought?" Rubbing a hand across his head, he lets out quiet, murmuring growl. The moment I get to any of our gracious hosts...

Still worrying over Li and Garvid, Mouse turns to look ahead, eyes open for any dangers...and dangers they find. For several moments, she is overwhelmed by the ultramarine scintillation, until finally she shakes her head and comes back to herself. And things aren't abundantly clearer when she snaps out of it - coming back mid-conversation doesn't help, but the sight of Vencarlo freely roaming the dungeon doesn't jibe with how they'd found Neolandus earlier, and then there was the tingling crawling across her skin...

She was tired, and hadn't been as attentive. the last thing Yaziyah remembers is an ultramarine flash, and there is a gap in her memory. Looking around, not much time seems to have passed, and a few others also look dazed. Nevertheless, she resolves to be more vigilant in the future.

Even so, after the next lever is pulled and the walls shift again, the sight of Vencarlo takes her by surprise. Could it really be so easy?

"Mister Orsini, how fortunate that we have found you. Are you on the run for something? Are you injured?"

She looks at the corridor behind him, straining to see or hear anything that might be in pursuit of the swordmaster.

Li's brow furrows as she observes Vencarlo not acknowledging his gear. Surely the revelation that they knew he was Blackjack should result in some sort of response other than confusion. Surely he wouldn't be concerned if the seneschal knew, would he?

Remembering what she had noticed with Vencarlo's hand back when they first met him, she focuses on his fingers to see if two of them still appeared to move oddly. If this man was an impostor of some sort, would they have gotten that detail correct?

We haven't fought together since the Academy. And there's no Sabina or Grau to steal my glory this time.", he chuckles, tapping his halberd.

Hold one moment, sir. We are duty bound as sworn officers of the Korvosan Guard. Execution without a trial is not up for consideration.

Vencarlo furrows his brow, his face flushing for a moment. But then he smiles, the expression gone as quickly as a cloud beneath the sun. ”Very well. It will be enough to, to incapacitate Glorio for the time being.”

Kynes wrote:
Vencarlo, my intelligence told me that you prefer the rapier, perhaps are even a master of the rapier. Does this kukri you wield have a special property that makes it especially useful?

”As a matter of fact, it does.” Vencarlo defly flips the blade in the air, catching it with his gloved hand. You notice a faint trail of electricity trailing the weapon. Li also notices that the hand catching the blade, while gloved, has two fingers that appear rather stiff. Vencarlo grins, unsheathing his handsome smile.

Yazi wrote:
"I would expect Blackjack to advocate for vigilante justice, but we are not vigilantes. Vencarlo, we need to get you and the seneschal out of here, then discuss the queen and our options for Korvosa. What do you know of Glorio that makes him such a threat?"

Vencarlo hardly skips a beat, but ignores the comment about Blackjack. ”I know that he is a merciless, conniving reprobate who hides behind the facade of a dignified nobleman. He has his hand in more than just real estate and tenements for the poor. You thought Eel’s End and Barvasi’s operation was a pit of snakes. Ha! I would wager that more than one disappearance has occurred under Glorio’s command, and that more than one body fished from the Jeggare sunk there after displeasing him.”

Talfryn:
You don’t discern any illusions. You also sense that your spell has failed. I believe the DC is 17?

Li wrote:
”"Vencarlo, do ya ever be hearin' from tha sisters we be travelin' wit'?"

”Why, no,” he says seriously. ”Why, did something happen to them after the journey to the ranch in you-know-where?”

Garvid wrote:

Vencarlo looks puzzled. ”I’m sorry, Garvid, but I’m not sure what you mean. If you’d like a friendly duel or lesson, I’m sure we can arrange that after we’ve worked our way out of here, yes?”

Whatever uneasiness Li may have been feeling about the manner in which they found Vencarlo melts away as she first notices his hand and then as he mentions both Brienna and recognizes the 'sisters' she had been asking about. She figures that being down in the Labyrinth and not knowing who or what to trust must have made her unnecessarily edgy.

Vencarlo wrote:

Li shakes her head, "No, no, nothin' like tha'." She grins sheepishly, "I just be thinkin' tha' if'n they be sendin' word tha' ya may be easier ta find th'n me."

The rogue moves back towards the lever she had just pulled, "First, we be gettin' outta this movin' torture chamb'r. Then we be incapacitatin' our less-than-forthcomin' host."

I'm hoping that she'll be able to pull the lever until she sees her mark that she made on the wall before pulling this lever

Buffs:

We’ll say that bless is active, as Yazi would likely have used her wand as you emerged from the labyrinth. One use marked off.

Garvid: bless
Kynes: bless, heightened awareness
Li: bless
Mouse: bless
Talfryn: bless, false life
Yazi: bless

Conditions:

Satisfied with Vencarlo’s reponse, Li pulls the lever, this time revealing a solid wall.

Again. Once the chambers grind to a halt, a new corridor is revealed to the south. Both walls of its twenty-foot-long span are decorated with row upon row of tiger heads. Each head appears to be that of an actual, once-living tiger. The heads are remarkably well preserved—their gaping mouths and glaring eyes even appear to be moist.

Again. This time Li’s original chalk mark is revealed. The group passes into the hall, finding the first lever.

Li pulls. Now the symbol of slumber is revealed but, its magic spent, it lies dormant.

Again. Another solid wall.

Again. And this time Li’s original wall marking is revealed. This is the dungeon’s original orientation.

Vencarlo and Neolandus follow as the group emerges once more onto the underground pier. The group prepares to climb the rope bridges...

Who DARES intrude upon this holy place? A rumbling Vudrani accent reverberates from the room to the south.

Four lit braziers illuminate a vast chamber, a cathedral-like space made all the more immense by its lack of benches or other concessions to comfort. The floor is polished tan marble, with the walls rising up to form a domed ceiling sixty feet above. Alcoves line these walls, six in all, inside of which stand human-sized statues of a tiger-headed man. To the south, a few steps lead up to a pulpit-like area with three more statues of the same figure—the central one being twice as tall and holding out before him two lances from which hang flags. The left is the flag of Korvosa, while the right bears the Arkona coat of arms.

Two massive green cobras rear their heads upward aggressively, their brightly colored, scaly hoods flaring in an unmistakable warning.

Behind them stands a tiger-headed man wielding a kukri and rippling with arcane energy. His backward-bending fingers and bestial, snarling visage leave little doubt as to his fiendish nature.

Knowledge (planes) DC 21:
Originating in ancient Vudra, the rakshasa is an evil, shape-changing spirit that cloaks itself in the guise of a humanoid creature that it might walk unseen among its prey. They embody what is taboo among most societies, and in the shape of those it seeks to defile, a rakshasa gorges itself on these hideous acts. Were they human, these acts of cannibalism, blasphemy, and worse would mark them as criminals condemned to the cruelest of hells.

Rakshasas are born on the Material Plane, but they are not of it. They possess the powers and shapes of fiends, but their fates are inexorably tied to the mortal world, and it is there that they seek to rule. The reincarnations of manipulators, traitors, and tyrants obsessed with earthly pleasures, rakshasas embody the very nature of materialistic evil. After dying violent deaths, these spirits are so tied to worldly decadence and selfish concerns that they take shapes that better reflect the baseness of their lives and are reborn as fiends.

Rakshasas have DR/good and piercing and SR.

She'll need to pick up some good crossbow bolts at her next opportunity...

As soon as Li hears an unfamiliar voice, she swings her crossbow up into position. Yazi's confirmation that the strange creature was evil was enough for the rogue to open fire with two crossbow bolts. Besides, no one nice would be having two giant cobras, would they?

I’m going to stop tracking buffs because I’m usually wrong :).

Conditions:

Kynes’s blistering invective ignites the cobras and the rakshasa. The latter roars in surprise and pain as his richly-colored garments go up in flame (all demoralized and catch fire).

Li releases two bolts, one of which punctures a cobra’s hood. The creature hisses and recoils, exhibiting remarkable strength and dexterity. (You take a -4 to shoot through the cobras, so let’s direct those shots at the snake. They’re also flat-footed so you got bonus sneak attack damage, which I rolled for you).

The rakshasa spins, swiping at the flames. He clearly tries to cast a spell but is too distracted by the fire (failed concentration check from burning condition. Nice work Kynes!).

Yaziyah's mind spins through the possibilities as the creatures squaring up against them burst into flames. She could coat them in sticky mud, but that might put out the fires. She could try and curse the rakshasa, but which weakness to exploit? In the end, it is the rakshasa's form that gives her an idea.

"Let's see how you like being prey..."

She speaks a short incantation, beseeching the spirits of the most skilled and cunning hunters to aid her companions.

Casting hunter's blessing on the party, everyone gets +2 to attack and damage against outsiders (native) for 9 hours. Also +2 to Bluff, Perception, Sense Motive and Survival against such creatures, and +2 to Stealth, Survival, Perception and initiative while we are in an Underground environment.

The crippling pain that he's felt since that thrice-blasted rune makes it hard to focus; yet even so, Lord Talfryn quickly grasps the nature of the situation, and resolves upon what he decides is the most effective spell to cast: Haste.

With a flourish that consumes the licorice root, he sends forth swirling whirlwinds, each miniature vortex no larger than his hand, which impact with his companions, sinking into their chests and imbuing them with supernatural vigor.

Conditions:

Yazi invokes the favor of the hunters of old, while Talfryn imbues the group with preternatural speed.

The cobras, still sizzling from Kynes’s extract, uncoil and spring forward at their tormentor with fangs outstretched! Kynes ducks in time to avoid one’s bite, but the other sinks its enormous fangs into supple flesh. 19 dmg to Kynes and make a DC 19 Fort save or take 1d3 ⇒ 3 Con damage.

”That’s it, light on your feet!” Vencarlo calls from the rear, readying himself for an attack once the field opens (full defense).

Neolandus steps up and hurls an axe into the room. It whistles harmlessly past the cobra and bounces off of the wall (miss).
