Cressida responds swiftly and surely, "I am well, and well protected. The resistance gathers strength. You should come home by the Southwest."

There is some pause before Vencarlo tenders his reply, "We are in Korvosa plotting the overthrow of the Queen. Were you successful?"

The Sun Shaman replies curtly, "We are but 150 some miles East, Northeast of our last meeting."

The hawk-nosed man shrugs angrily, "If you have no currency than I want nothing to do with you - or your barbarous mate. Keep the lot of you out of my pub - we do not need your aid."

His eyes dart around the ally to make sure you are alone.

Dandi doesn't fault him for his anger, nor for turning down a casting worth many times the amount of the gold he is asking for. " If it is gold you want, then I'll get it for you. Will you tell me where to find the man?"

Fondo's response to Charlie's news is excited but also somewhat aggrieved. Though he would not admit it to himself, he rather fancied himself the resistance leader on whose coattails Cressida Kroft and Vencarlo Orisini would walk. He shrugs and laughs. "Could you try once more, Kako? Let's see... To Vencarlo, 'Glad to hear you're well. We've had success, and ready ourselves. How many days have we? Will you let me scry you in one hour?' And the same to Kroft, but say two hours? And to the shaman, 'We would discuss a proposition with you. Will you let us scry upon you in three hours?' How does that sound, Kako?"

"Why do you want to find him? Plan to finish what you started?" the man stares levelly at Dandilion. He's well in the doorway now, as his zombie continues to scrape and wash the pans.

- - -

Vencarlo replies, and more quickly this time, "I know not the Queen's own timeline, but I suspect time is short. Her grip tightens. Agreed."

Cressida says, "Alas I am hunted and so protected and I cannot easily shirk my protection. Vencarlo is with me."

And finally the Sun Shaman, "Could I stop your spirit young one?" Charlie almost hears the chuckle in his 'voice'.

Vencarlo Message: 1d100 ⇒ 51 (low is good) ==> The message works!

Vencarlo, on hearing Charlie's greeting through the message cantrip whispers back, "Let us be quick. I too am hunted I suspect by many parties. I've removed my amulet for the time being, but I do feel a little exposed."

"Where are you and how secure is this communication?"

Yes, Barael sells the Rods for the financial betterment of the party.

Briar wrote:
"So where were we, Rat? We were talking about a bow? Hmmm..."

Barael nods enthusiastically. "Bows, at the least. I was thinking you might have a recommendation on strengthening Black Tooth, after the spirits left it feeling more... hollow. And, thinking on your belt, would you be able to craft one like it, to help me gain more agility? I think that would suit me, if I turned to using a bow more often."

Barael walks ahead of Briar, then slows down, only to speed up again to match the pacing of his words. "The bows, Long-Lived. What do you think I can make of one, given the dwindling funds I seem to have?"

Briar looks down at his own belt as Barael mentions his own.

"I could do that, Barael, It is expensive, but I could fit it in. I must work quickly as I have much to do and we have such little time before we should return to Korvosa. I am wary of going back unprepared...we..." Briar's eyes flicker to Barael's face and the invisible scar where the chainghost sucked Barael's soul out. "We had deaths last time we were unprepared."

Briar does some mental calculations as they walk to a place that makes and sells bows.

"I shall craft you a fine belt, Barael," Briar says entering a bowery. "Now, let us find you a proper bow. I fear that the longbow, like mine, might be too big for you...and the shortbow might fit your tendency for acrobatics, but we should test them out."

Briar will run Barael through a series of bow-dacious moves to determine the right bow for him...based on size and strength.

When that is done, he will spend 8 hours at the Mage's Moot, crafting.

Getting much closer on a crafting and spending list. Working it out IC as well.

Seeing the elf's better half up and about again also makes him smile. Seeing the elf cringe makes it all the better. Nikolay looks closely to see if the elf seems to enjoy the pain.

Exactly how much of the woman rubbed off on him?

Nikolay will also seek out a scroll of overland flight so he can add the spell to his spellbook. Nikolay considers spending most of every day with the spell up.

When Barael has the proper bow, Brair will tend the Rat's sword.

"I am no swordsmith, Rat...but I have learned a bit about pain...recently," Briar's mind's eye goes back to Laori, trapped and changed. "You and I both made the choice to arm ourselves against the undead in Scarwall as we knew what to expect." Briar walks away from the bowery.

"Luckily, we again know what to expect in Korvosa: Varisians. Shoanti. Grey Maidens. Maybe even the Red Mantis. The Queen. Others...who might all be human. And who knows what matter of other human rabble will rise against us?" Briar looks to be sure Barael listens or has questions.

"Again, I intend to enchant my bow to deal with those potential enemies. It is possible that those humans will be smart enough to not stand in my way, but they have yet to show much wisdom so I am not optimistic. We have reports of dragons as well, but that seems less likely in a big city. And who knows what manner of Zon-Kuthonite allies might attend: daemons? Demons? Devils? It is tough to know."

Briar sighs.

"No matter what our preparation, Rat, we will be caught by surprise by something. Such is the nature of things...we can only expect what we expect."

Briar walks to the weaponsmith...handing over his bow and asking for a Bane:Human enchantment. He takes out his replacement/backup bow and enchants it with Greater Magic Weapon for the time being.

The pub owner watches as Dandilion walks through the alley and turns back to his 'servant'.

Briar, how much gold will it cost to upgrade your bow? Are you speeding the process for an extra 10% but half the time?

Just to caution, Fondo is going to go to Korvosa while things are being made? That could trigger events/encounters/etc. Are you sure you want to proceed? This is a tangled web, and pulling on strands is going to result in actions by your friendly DM. Right now (Othday Arodus 30, 4707) both Barael and Briar have their main weapons out for refurbishing and Briar is unavailable due to crafting.

Also, when you say 'message' I think you mean 'sending'. Vencarlo won't answer that question through the scry as it could easily lead to a trap (at least in his currently paranoid mind). I think Charlie is out of sendings for today (he's used 6 sendings, and I think he cast restoration on poor Majenko). He could pull a higher level slot to cast the spell, but then we're into scrying and I dunno what else at that level so I need Charlie to confirm he's casting it today if that's the plan. :)

Barael nods. This time, his eyes do not glaze over. They dilate, shortly after Briar mentions the Mantis. Grey Maidens, Davaulus and his Physicians, Mantis, followers of Zon Kuthon, Swastal, Andaisin...

"I choose the same then." Barael gives over Black Tooth for the crafting of the Human Bane.

He shoulders his new darkwood bow, nodding to himself. "I'm glad to have your consul, Long-Lived. Different perspective. Your understanding of all this magic." Barael looks like he's ready to say more things, but something confuses him into silence.

"So, Briar. Do you think you'll ever return to the Star Tower? It's not been all that long, I know, but... do you miss her? She's become quite powerful through her god, right? Do you think that changes a person? Make them less... human? Do you think she'll forget you with time?"

Just roleplaying Fondo. I think he believes he could partner with Deyanira to come and go from Korvosa undetected. Teleport, Non-Detection, Veil, Detect Scrying. I"m not saying he's right, and I'm happy to tweak him to back down. Wasn't planning on anything more than a planning conversation with Vencarlo, Neolandus, and Cressida, to get a full accounting of where things stand. Partly he wants to work the treaty angle that Barael si referring to.

"Kako, what do you think? Deyanira, what say you? Do you think we could sneak in undetected?"

Not trying to stop you role playing per se. But characters of your levels make waves whether you're detected or not. More importantly your plans and actions have consequences, and while you may be well hidden, not everyone is - or can be.

The things Fondo is doing will advance the plot, and that may put an end to crafting - or split the party. I am totally fine with that, but you may not be. Either the party is laying low and preparing privately, or they are out there negotiating and preparing a movement - or combination of movements. There are risks with both endeavors. Neither path is absolute and there are plenty of options. Proceed as you desire.

Deyanira looks uneasy. "There are many layers of protection that I can place on those who would go. Whether or not they are enough is anyones guess. The Queen is not what she was, and those ant-head masked people are looking too."

"I think we'll be safe, as long as we're a little lucky." she smiles hopefully, comfortable in her power, but uncertain of the nature of the opposition.

I have one casting of fly a day. I like the idea of a wand of wind walk so that we can all be covered. We may need to make multiple tactical retreats in a row.

Also, this is the final weekend of the Hatch Art Festival I'm volunteering for. As such, I'm going to be booked solid almost until Monday. I'd really like to be involved in the final push against the queen, but I understand if you want to let Euan control Charlie a bit. I doubt we'll get much further than crafting and other preparations over the weekend.

I hear Barael may need some gold for boots, unless he supports the wand of air walk (wind walk is too high level for a wand and not useful in combat). Is there any other need for Fondo's monetary help? I hope to figure out what I have left over the weekend.

Also, don't forget that Deyanira will be available to craft for the great majority of days we are preparing. Forge Ring, Craft Wondrous Items, Scribe Scroll, and possibly Craft Rod or Craft Staff.

The pub owner (int 12) fails, after a few moments, to resist Dandilion's probe. Most of what he is considering has to do with possibly beefing up security because of all the riff-raff coming in from Korvosa these days.

He worries about what another bouncer will do to his profits, and eventually concludes that he'll need to hire one in any event now that his main man, Daene, is injured. He can certainly work while injured - especially as his injury is fairly minor. However, he does look weaker with that bandage on his arm - and sometimes that's all it takes to lose control of the crowd.

"We would this common interest forge unto a treaty that might mean the peaceful return of some Shoanti sacred lands. Briar smirks at Barael's question, debating whether to reveal himself...but realizes that Barael is as close to he has as a non-elf friend, and opens up.

"I am of split mind regarding Laori and her sacrifice. Admittedly, being with her was pretty awful...and painful," Briar looks at Barael to see if he remembers the screams and the agony. "However, she was also a loyal companion. Her sacrifices allowed us to get this far. She chose to accept the honors of her God...though none of us were willing. That loyalty and that sacrifice deserve our respect."

Briar looks around at the City of Kaer Maga.

"I think we would have failed without her. The more I recollect our fights...the more I am convinced. So, yes, I think upon her, Barael. What I debate now is best how to honor her. I suspect that she'll be living in the Star Tower for a long time. I question just how to reward and thank her. I do not have any plans to go back myself. But I certainly want to find a way to thank her again."

Each word of the Elf resonates on two planes for Barael. Each time Briar mentions Laori, Barael pulls from his thoughts a different name, and substitutes it, like one of his lockpicks. He tests Briar's thoughts as his own, listening for the 'pop' that tells him the teeth align.

Her sacrifices... accept the honors of her God... just how to reward and thank her...

"Oh, aye. I've been thinking similar thoughts. You wouldn'ta accepted that honor from Zon, are you serious? I thought you only dealt with your god, but would you have accepted the honors had your god asked you, you know, instead of Laori's god?"

"As for ideas, I'll let you know. She doesn't strike me as a bouquet of flowers kind of gal. She'd probably revel in a set of fine surgical instruments." Barael shrugs, as the thoughts jab at him.

There's a pause while the Sun Shaman thinks. Charlie tells you he's mounted, and moving fast somewhere in the Cinderlands from the look of it.

"So you wish us to attack the church and Cheliax and in exchange you'll get us some land in, or maybe just near what is now Korvosa - our homeland?"

Ahhh-choo

"Those are some powerful enemies to gain for a war that is not our own. I feel for your people, your 'common folk', but their fight is not our fight nor is ours theirs. Yes, we would settle the great river again, but you've taught us that it must be through peace - not war."

"If we make enemies of Cheliax and the Hellknight order will not they come after us even as we try to make a settlement in a hostile land? How shall that peace be forged? The Order of the Nail already views us as savages to be purged from civilization, they will not come to the table of peace easily, and we will not wage a war of extermination however much it may be deserved."

Succession is an interesting question. Korvosa has had a line of kings and queens since the start. There were fights about who came next in line, but there was always a family there. Now there is no clear line.

Many would say it then falls to the noble houses to select a new King from among their ranks. Such a nomination would be difficult at best, and it would need to be approved by Neolandus. He is the gatekeeper in this particular case because he was rightfully chosen by the last King.

There is a new Seneschal in power now (positioned by the Queen) that would have to be refuted, but that should be easy enough if you can gather legal evidence against the Queen that she killed her husband the King.

Another possibility is Chelliax, still technically overlord of Korvosa though that relationship is stretched to (or some say past) the breaking point. Chelliax could chose a King to sit on the throne at Korvosa. In that case Neolandus would still 'technically' have to approve the choice, but in practice it would be a given conclusion. Neolandus would largely be a stamp on the process, not a valid part of it.

Far less likely is, well, a revolution and a King chosen by (but not necc. among) the people. There is little will for this solution however. The line of aristocrats in Korvosa has done fairly well by the people, and so there is little discontent. That may be why so many are so easily cowed by the latest ruler - the Queen. They are accustomed to being properly subservient to the throne.

None of this factors in the party of course - just laying out the ground.

"I mean, I'm pretty sure I can do it. I'll have to find someone that knows how, but how hard can that be in Kaer Maga? And OH! I need money. I'll need gems, and I have this... thing, I'm trying to do, but that's another thing and not this thing. This thing will need gems, though or maybe we could use one of those jar things. Do we still have any? Like an empty one? It would need to be empty. I don't think you can fit two souls in one jar." A fine blush creeps up her cheeks at some errant thought and she shakes her head as she tries to keep her mind on the matter at hand. "Well, what do you think?"

Briar winces a bit, his ears hurting from having his name yelled so often.

I haven't heard that much screaming of my name since Laori.

Briar sighs wistfully and focuses on Dandilion.

Briar smiles at mention of the soul jars.

"I would help you if I could, but Fondo has the jars. I wonder if what he means to do with them. They might fetch a good price in a city like this. Or you might see about purchasing your own...but..do you mind if I inquire why you might want one of those jars?" Briar asks.

"There are some who believe such jar magics are tainted toward evil and darkness. They are fools, of course. But they are entitled to their opinions."

Barael looks at Briar first, understanding that something of what she says has her inquiring about magical potentials that fly well above Barry's head. When she speaks on jars, and her ability to work with them, Barael's jaw tightens a little, as if he felt something cold pass over his shoulder blades.

"We still have those...those... hag jars?"

" Oh, I wouldn't do anything evil, of course. How could it be, if everyone was willing, and..."

Spinning towards Barael, she takes his hands and steps in even closer. Her bounce is muted only enough to keep from knocking him over. Her pig tails fall on either side of his face, mellowing to something that *could* be caused by a breeze, if only there were one.

"... you would be willing, wouldn't you, Barrie? I'd only be inside you for a moment, and I promise not to do anything awful, just cast the one spell, I promise. It would be so much, fun, and we could do it all day, then, not just for a few minutes, like with the other spell."

Barael turns bright red, his hands escaping Dandi's, only to envelop them with his own. He flashes a quick look at Briar, while dragging Dandi to the side, lowering his voice to a low growl.

"I don't think... it works like that... not that I ..." Barael stutters for a moment, before realizing that he might be wrong about Dandi's proposal. "Oh, a spell. Right. What exactly do you mean by 'be inside you' and 'for a moment'?"

Dandi frowns, worrying her lower lip with her teeth. "Are you sure? I rather thought it would...of course I don't know for sure, but the strands seem to weave that way..." she blinks at his question, looking completely confused for a moment.

"So I can make you fly, of course. I can't do it from the outside, well, I can, but it doesn't last very long, like when I do myself. But this way, I could, you see. You'd have to move while I do it, but only for a little while. It might be a tight fit, but I thought... the jars, they're bigger than a gem, right? So they'd be bigger, have more room." She leans her head against his, whispering for privacy. "I'll be *very* careful, I promise. It won't hurt."

Careful. Ok. Alchemicals. Ok. Dragon's den. Ok.

"You're trying to bring us to wing? Both of us? So I can keep up with you longer than a bard's song?" The color fades a little from his cheeks.

"I trust you. Let's see what brightened your eyes."

She brightens, a brilliant smile flashing just for him."Yes, I want to us to fly together. If I can make this work, you could fly as long as I can."

It is her turn to blush."I was thinking about you, and last night and uhm... I thought how much fun uhh...flying together would be, but realized the way we've been doing it doesn't last very long. And then I thought of the jars and and Oh, she was really horrible, but that creature back at Scarwall and her jars. And If I could just be... inside... you, your body, for the time it might take to cast the spell, then I could hop back out and we could go flying, or dancing, or whatever, together, for a very long time."

She pauses then, cutting a quick glance at Briar, before continuing. "But... we'd need one of the jars that Fondo has, or... I've heard of people doing something similar with gems. Would you rather stay in a gem instead of one of the jars?"

Briar begin to wonder where madness ends and where Dandi's lust begins.

She wants to be inside him? Or vice versa?

Briar prepares to back away, slowly.

"Did you need me for something? Maybe I should go over there while you two work this out. I'm pretty sure the thing you're talking about doesn't require jars or gems, though...uh...maybe...uh...nevermind."

They always said love was like getting lost in someone's eyes, but this...

"If you're sure you can... uh... keep things straight. I mean, like we can keep from misplacing, what, our thoughts? Then, yeah, I'd much rather speak on gems than jars. Is that alright? Do we have what we need to see if this will work?" Barael looks to Briar, gauging his confidence in Dandi's experiment, and isn't reassured to see Briar looking at them funnily.

"I'm sure I can. I can practice with someone else first, if you'd feel better about it? And if the jars are just too much, then yes we'll definitely try gems."

Turning to where Briar is, err, *was* she frowns as she asks, "Do you think it will work, Briar, soul hopping so that I can cast spells on Barael's body so he can fly overland like we do? What does Nethys tell you of such things?"

Briar looks at Dandi, finally getting closer to an explanation.

"Describe more...what spells? The spells I know involving jars can be...seen as...uh...uninvited intrusions by some. But they are just magic. Is that what you seek to do with Barael?"
