"Wow! That was close, Ambrose. I think that full plate armor you mentioned might indeed be a good idea. However, if we run into more of these lightning-throwing b*#&+es you might wanna reconsider. You'd be a walking lightning magnet."
Listening to the descriptions of what we found in the ways of loot from the slain monsters, I look up when the belt and the arrows are mentioned.
"If you guys don't mind, I would like to take that belt and the arrows. Couldn't hurt if I were able to do some extra damage and being able to do so with even more accuracy would be great. And by all means, Leonar, take that rod.

After taking a salvo of healing taps from the wand, Ambrose regains his feet and gathers up his equipment. He then notices the breastplate that Harek brings back from the mage. He whistles.
"Now where did a goblin get such fine-looking armor? I wonder if it fits..." He helps himself to the suit of mithral armor, spending a few minutes to get out of his own and into hers. "Not bad...much lighter than mine, too. I hope no one minds if I help myself to it?"
I'll try the +2 breastplate for a bit and can always put on the full plate we have if I'm still getting clobbered. I'm sure I'll be better when we get back into a field and I can be mounted again.

"Off course we don't mind, Ambrose. Unless Harek disagrees, but I doubt that. Go ahead and keep it. The better protected you are, the better we're off as a group." Slapping my leg with a hand, I whistle soft and low: "Fang, come here boy." Getting some dried meat from my pack, I hold it out to the wolf and feed him the morsels of dried venison, a smile on my face as I see my furry friend obviously enjoying the food.

Is anyone tracking treasure?
After some time spent examining the spoils from the fallen, you head back up the stairs to the welcoming chamber where you encountered the first band of hobgoblin monks.
From this chamber, you have the time to take a closer look at the chambers you only glanced in before. The room with the darkwood statue of Tiamaat - its artistry probably worth something to the right collector if you could find a way to transport it - seems to be where the hobgoblins slept. Two smaller rooms branch off. One appears to be a storeroom with a couple dozen crates and barrels of provisions: water, dried meat, bread, incense. The next room has also been used as sleeping quarters, but there is only one pallet. This must have been used by the woman leader.
You consider how to proceed from here. In the adjoining room adorned with all the butcher's hooks, a door leads into a narrow, curved corridor. Likewise, earlier you discovered a hidden door that reveals another curved corridor. I goofed earlier and accidentally covered up the door on the map. An updated map is below, showing the door and secret passage, both leading south.

Ambrose Harrowfield |

"Up is up, I suppose..." Ambrose mutters in regards to the two paths. As he muses, he looks at Leonar, Aleste, and Helaku. I wonder if that woman was one of the Red Hand's Wyrmlords. She seemed important enough. Perhaps she was the author of the letter to the goblin we fought in the ruins of Rhest...I recall that the letter smelled like perfume. I think it was signed Ulwai."
Suddenly feeling rude, Ambrose turns to Harek. "This goblin army has commanders called Wyrmlords. We've fought two, maybe three now. There's at least another couple we have heard of. Kharn was one name on a map we have."
As he speaks, Ambrose fumbles around his pack and pulls out a vial, one of his oils of bless weapon, to have it handy. "Damnable ghosts and liches..."

Shaylar Kallanereth |

Turning my head towards Harek, I cock an eyebrow in mock seriousness: "And what's wrong with light and fancy elfy stuff, good sir dwarf? Why bother with all that heavy stuff? Light stuff is the way to go if y'ask me. Why take a beating when you can just dance out of the way?" Seeing Harek's frown, I start laughing, letting some of the tension from the previous battles drain away.
"So, where to now?"

Aleste |

"Hang on, Shaylar. These should be yours."
I press into the elf's hands a quiver of 20 arrows, clearly magical and marked with lightning runes. Wrapped around those is a fine belt which ripples with obvious enchantment.
20 +1shock arrows and a belt of +2dex

Harek Ironshirt |

"Sounds like a plan. We press on, find more gobbos ta cut down, and then find this lich thing and be on our business. Lead da way."

Apologies folks - I was thinking it had been quiet on the game front for the last few days, but when I actually went into the thread just now, I see my magnificent post from earlier in the week seems to have disappeared. Crud. I'll just have to see if I can reconstruct one even more magnificent!
I had one vote for exploring the secret passage, without any objections the passage it is.
After moving back up the stairwell to the welcoming chamber, you take time to finish exploring the adjoining rooms. You consider which way to go next, and you become aware that Harek's attention keeps being drawn to the secret door you found in the wall at one of the corners of the room. Maybe it's a dwarf thing? Either way, without any notions to the contrary, you choose the secret passageway.
The narrow corridor curves slightly to the right, with a low ceiling just above your heads. You tread carefully, wary of traps and of making noise in this dark sepulchre of a place. The passage isn't long, and ends in a stone wall. Pushing on it reveals another concealed doorway. This one opens into a long chamber awash in sickly yellow light shining up from the glowing surface of a large pool of mustard-colored water. A large shape, unidentifiable, floats inside the pool. The pool's rim is made out of dozens, perhaps hundreds, of lion skulls that have been fused together with gray mortar. Shadowy alcoves line the north and south walls, and to the west of the sickly pool stands a fifteen-foot tall statue of a rotting lion. The morbidly majestic figure's head reaches nearly to the ceiling.
Suddenly you hear a rasping growl echo from one of the dark alcoves. It is soon joined by other howls in a terrible chorus, as a new horror finds you. Pulling themselves from the alcoves are six large humanoids. They may once have been bugbears, but their flesh has rotted, turned pallid gray and covered with oozing sores. Their hair is bedraggled, their teeth appear to have been filed to needle-sharp points, and their eyes seem lit from within by an unnatural green light. From each of the stomachs protrudes two long, questing tentacles. They seem eager to make your acquaintance.
Have at 'em!

As the group enters this chamber, a look of disdainful disgust takes hold of Ambrose's features.
"And what foul manner of necromancy takes place in this vile place, I wonder..." He tightens his grip on his blade and instinctively shifts his shield arm, bringing the barrier into a more ready position. When the creatures begin to emerge from the shadowy alcoves, his muscles tense and eyes widen at the horrors.
"Heironeous's sword...I guess that sort of manner," he mutters. Seeing that Harek is already blocking the path to the others on one side of the grim pool, Ambrose advances to the other side to take command of that throughway. He eyes the strange abomination as he approaches, wondering how it was created.
"Wretched thing, let me reintroduce you to the grave you crawled out of!" He swings his blade.

Round 1
Shaylar is first to react, nocking two arrows to his bow in a blur and letting fly at the nearest monster. Both arrows hit its body with a dull thud in the center of its chest, electrical energy arcing from the wounds. It doesn't seem to react to the precise strikes in quite the way that you'd expect, though the electricity causes its body to twitch violently.
Ambrose raises his sword and throws himself at the same apparition on the far side of the chamber, while Aleste attempts to soften the target with a well-aimed flask of alchemist's fire. Liquid fire engulfs the being, but it hardly seems to notice. It's flesh blackens, but seems to resist the fire.
Ambrose follows through with a swing of his enchanted blade, dodging a tentacle as he drives the sword home with a sickening crunch. It ignores the wound for the most part, hissing as the sword's cold effect extinguishes some of the flames.
The rotted creature responds by trying to impale Ambrose on its claws. The cavalier fends off with his shield two mighty swipes of its powerful arms. On the other side of the chamber, one of the seven foot tall monstrosities looms over Harek. The dwarf yells a taunt at his foe but before he can charge in with his axe its tentacles snake out from its abdomen and wrap the dwarf's heavily armored body in a tight hold. It leers at Harek hungrily, as the others shamble forwards. Successful grapple!

Round 1 - continued
You gaze in horror at the monsters, trying to puzzle out just what they are and how to defeat them.
There are stories about these undead creatures in hagiographies of the saints of Pelor. Bonedrinkers, the bodies of goblinoids warped and given false life by an infusion of evil, negative energy. Their bite literally suchs the marrow from your bones. They are always created by a powerful spellcaster.
These creatures are definitely not natural. However, they don't appear to be spellcaster, at least not as far as you can tell.
These things are definitely a perversion of the natural order of things. No matter how you might feel towards goblinoids, you can tell these bugbears must have suffered horribly in becoming what you see before you.
Leonar, you wanting to make an attack as well? Haste, indeed. Helaku's kept a few spell slots back for just this kind of occasion.

Round 1 continued
Leonar conjures up a flaming sphere and sends it hurtling towards the monster farthest away. He is surprised to see the creature lurch out of the way at the last moment, the burning sphere rolling past without effect. Rolled an astoundingly incredible Reflex save.
Helaku quickly sizes up the situation and decides this calls for a favored spell of particular potency. He spreads his hands as though casting a net, and you suddenly find yourselves able to dash quickly on your feet. Good call, and Helaku indeed has a free slot. Everyone gains one free attack at highest attack bonus when making a full attack. You also garner a +1 bonus to attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves. It lasts for 8 rounds. Don't get more than 30 feet away from each other.
Harek struggles against the tentacles trying to wrap themeslves around the dwarf. He hacks and slashes, managing to cut deep chunks of flesh from the creature's; odd how they don't bleed. Both successful hits.
Will get Shaylar's action and then post an update for the next turn with Shaylar, Ambrose's turns.

Good to be back! Good trip.
Heroes versus The Bonedrinkers - Round 2
With a quick prayer to Ehlonna, Lady of the Wood, Shaylar looses a blistering array of arrows at the bonedrinker grabbing hold of Harek. Three arrows sink deep into the creature's chest and it halts, teetering as the dark light fades from its eyes. Then it crashes against the pool, a clawed hand reaching into the water. Shaylar pivots and sends a last arrow into the bonedrinker looming over Ambrose, dropping that one as well. All direct hits. The first were enough to take it down, so thought you'd be happy to move on to another target with your rapid shot arrow.
Aleste throws another bomb, the next nearest to Ambrose. The flask bursts against the side of the monster and splashes it with acid. Whatever foul concoctions or enchantments gave birth to the creature have rendered its skin rubbery and thick, but the acid burns. 11 points acid damage. I doubly goofed, I had applied damage reduction to your bomb attacks but energy attacks should have been exempt, and alchemist bombs are magical in any case.
Don't forget as well that you're all hasted!

Round 2 continued
With the bonedrinker still reeling from Aleste's acid bomb, Ambrose follows up with a series of strikes with his frost-rimmed sword. The bonedrinker's flesh seems to resist the natural cold, but the cavalier's blade hews slabs of dead flesh off the creature. Two direct hits, your haste attack misses as you try to adjust to your speeded up reflexes.
The bonedrinker retaliates. It lunges forward and reaches for Ambrose, while its two tentacles plough into the knight and attempt to wrap around his arms. With a cry, Ambrose manages to shrug off the tentacles threatening to tear him apart. Two successful slam attacks for a total of 18 points damage. The successful hits also mean it gets a free grapple attempt, luckily which if fails. One of the other bonedrinkers lumbers forward from the back and throws a upward attack with its claws that Ambrose is easily able to dodge.
The other two bonedrinkers push into action as well. One (the one that was being shadowed by Leonar's charges up and its tentacles explode outwards, attempting to pull Harek into its grasp. The dwarf holds his own, calmly batting the appendages away. The last bonedrinker lurches into speed and takes a leap to vault over the pool, landing within reach of Aleste. A strong arm rakes claws across the alchemist's face. 9 points damage to Aleste.

Round 2 continued
Leonar mentally commands his flaming sphere to roll forward, following the bonedrinkers' advance. It strikes the middle fiend, fire bathing its rubbery skin but doing no discernible damage. The lion shaman draws his weapon, preparing to bring battle to the nearest monster. Bonedrinker failed its save, but still benefited from its fire resistance. I didn't move you forward, as to do so would risk an attack of opportunity, but I thought you were close enough to the nearest bonedrinker to be considered the frontline of battle.
Eyeing the flaming sphere, Helaku targets the same bonedrinker with a spell of his own. With a wave of his hands he conjures the arcane magic and the bonedrinker halts, stock still. The flaming sphere lashes about its body, burning away any remaining hair and fur. Casts Hold Person on that middle bonedrinker, which failed its save. Paralysed for the next eight rounds, though it can attempt another save each round to break the enchantment.
Harek lays into the bonedrinker between himself and Aleste. One, two, three swift slashes hew away chunks of flesh and bone. If this thing weren't a corpse already, surely it would be now. Briefly the monster sinks to one knee, it looks ready to keel over. All successful strikes, with that kind of damage it's wavering.
Round 3
Shaylar creates a new pincushion as he turns and plants three arrows in the chest of the bonedrinker advancing on Harek and Leonar. He keeps Fang well away from the reach of the monsters' tentacles. Three successful hits (including the manyshots), on the bonedrinker on the far-right. Aleste's correct, between the haste spell, Many Shot, Rapid Shot, and your attack bonus you can take one more attack roll on a full attack, at your best attack bonus.
Aleste draws a silvered mace and steps up to the nearest bonedrinker. Despite his skepticism, the strike smashes into the monster's face, splintering bone and what may once have been brains. The creature's skin also seems to react to the silvered head of the mace, blistering and turning black. The thing soundlessly collapses in a heap, tentacles twitching limply on the ground. The flanking bonus helped your last attack, and just enough damage to take it down, super!

Round 3 continued
Ambrose grins over the clamor of battle with the twisted abominations. Blue light dances off his blade as he slips past the bonedrinker's defenses and hack away dead flesh. Two successful hits, significantly the successful critical hit.
The bonedrinkers pause, surprised at the amount of resistance, but are determined to feed on the living. Their tentacles whip forward hungrily. Just as Ambrose lands telling slices on one, it lunges forward and attempts to entangle him with its writhing tentacles. The cavalier beats away one but the other tentacle slaps him upside the head, a ringing blow that temporarily causes him to see double. 8 points damage to Ambrose.
Another continues to try to engulf Harek in its dark embrace. But the dwarf tucks into his armor like a turtle, ducking this way and that and keeping the monster at bay. Ambrose isn't so lucky, as the bonedrinker looming over the pool sends its tentacles snaking impossible long around the pool, slamming into the alchemist and attempting to drag him into its dark embrace. Successful strikes with both tentacles deal a total of 21 points damage, if you had been Small size it would have been allowed a free grapple attempt. For now its tentacles grasp all over, trying to pull you into biting range.
