The way I figure it, there are only 2 zombies outside, but 5 left inside!

Was thinking maybe we'd all get out of the prison and face just the two, but first try closing and jamming the doors behind us to prevent the 5 inside from reaching us? Ali said this in Aklo, though of course only Naught could understand what she said lol.

Anyway, back to IC figuring-it-out. I normally wouldn't say that much OOC, but these are desperate times! :)

First of all, happy to see you return Ysme... though I wish it were under better in-game circumstances.

Second... let me preamble this by stating I'm not big on discussing OOC what is better left decided IC. But I feel the need to point out a troubling dilemma I see in the present scenario. Ali's fresh out of spells, and we're down to 3 (atm) player characters. I don't know what else we're going to find down here, but if we don't wrap this up asap and get out of the prison soon to rest and recuperate, I fear a TPK can very easily occur. At the same time, IC these three young women would never dream of abandoning Cell to whatever gruesome fate the haunted prison has is store for her, and who might still live as far as they can tell. I think they're the type of women who would not be able to live with themselves if they abandoned her, despite the odds against them.

I'm not entirely sure what else we can do right now but press on, so... I'll just leave it at that.

Resting and recovering your resources will increase your odds of survival. There are plenty of secure rooms on the first floor where you can rest the night. If you think your characters would want to press on to rescue Cellawyn, despite the risk, then proceed accordingly.

With her strength of 12, Ali can probably lift but only stagger around with Cell in her arms. I think Zel or Naught can better handle one of them over their shoulders, though Ali will help carry one of them.

Ali's intent is to head there first, without entering the town and attracting attention. And then afterwards head back to Kendra's for a well deserved and relaxing bath and 10 hours of sleep... lol.

So I think its time to consider opening up recruitment. I'm thinking about adding three additional players. I would like to encourage the submission of occult classes since several of you are going in that direction and since Carrion Crown lends itself so well to occult themes.

Character creation rules would be per Ulrik's guidelines. The new characters will start at second level. We will collectively select the new players.

What do you think?

edit: I was already contemplating possibly rebuilding a Summoner character I played in a Shattered Star PbP Campaign here that went bust into a Spiritualist & it just occurred to me that the Spiritualist's Phantom is the spirit of someone who has died...

That is kind of tempting now...

That all sounds pretty good to me.

I personally favor groups of 5-6 when I GM: though 4 is a solid minimum, having one or two more helps maintain a balanced party when one or two players inevitably and sadly get confronted with RL issues and go MIA for significant periods of time.

Starting the new players a level below us is also nice imo as well. Making them 3rd would feel like they're getting a lot for nothing (compared with us), while making them start at 1st will make them feel relatively useless (and too easily killed) compared to the original players.

I had actually been back since my post a while back. I just didn't want to post to gameplay while things were still up in the air. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea, really.

You're welcome to bring Ysmerelda back or you can start a new character, whichever you prefer. If Ysmerelda, we'll work her resurrection into the story. I had planned for something more elaborate, but I decided that it would be too much of a deviation from the AP story line. Anyway, it might be fun to try an occult flavored class.

Though the APs are designed for four characters, six PCs allows for the combining of multiple encounters into one, which is important to prevent the PbPs from stretching out forever.

We'll pick up the remaining two in the recruitment thread. I'll post something this weekend.

I plan for the new characters to be agents of the "Esoteric Order of the Palantine Eye", which is featured later in the AP. Basically, the new characters have been sent to Ravengro to retrieve Professor Lorrimor's occult texts.

Hi there! This is Ysmerelda's horse!

Not really, but given the mental portrait of how/why he is here, I do see some curious similarities to the Caribbean Loa & their 'worshipers'...

Anyway, for the rest of your perusal/opinions/suggestions. I'm not entirely certain what 'role' he might play in the party. On the other hand, another nice thing about a larger party is that having every character 'fit' a certain 'role' becomes somewhat less imperative.

Appearance:
At first glance, the figure before you is all but indistinguishable from the countless other Varisian boy-children found in Caravans, Hamlets, Villages & Towns from the Lost Coast to the shores of Lake Encarthan. Further observation might cause one to note a steadier regard with a preternaturally precocious awareness behind it.

Background:
"Ravengro's getting worse, isn't it Petros?" The boy's voice has a resonance unknown in one so seemingly young. "I never thought I'd see the day Pharasmin priests care more about the state of their coin purses than the souls of their parishioners, and so near the Penitence as well?"

"The Council concerns me just as much, perhaps more." The scholarly elder replies. "Something isn't right, my friend. I need you to make some inquiries for me. It shouldn't take more than a month, six weeks at most."

"You have noticed it's the middle of winter, yes?" The boy's laughter belies the aggrieved expression on his face. "Just keep yourself safe while I'm gone. Kendra would never forgive me if anything happened when I was supposed to keep you out of trouble."

Such last words. What could have happened? I was already on my way back from what was, honestly, a wasted inquiry when news of his death found me. Now I finally make it here and?!-what is that!?


Personality:
Once, Grey was as genial & light-hearted as one could be as the child of escaped slaves while also serving a renowned scholar of the uncanny. Unfortunately, since returning to find his master dead, his community gripped by an unholy terror & he himself now somehow inexplicably bound as corporeal anchor for the spirit of another of his master's protege's; Grey's mien has taken on a notably more trepidatious cast.

Class Abilities:
Etheric Tether (Su): Grey can force Ysmerelda to manifest in an area around him by pushing her consciousness though the veil of ethereal essence, allowing her to fully manifest in either ectoplasmic or incorporeal form. Whenever Ysmerelda takes enough damage to send her back to the Ethereal Plane, as a reaction to the damage, Grey can sacrifice any number of his hit points without using an action. Each hit point sacrificed in this way prevents 1 point of damage dealt to the Ysmerelda. This can prevent Ysmerelda from being sent back to the Ethereal Plane.

This tether is limited. When Ysmerelda is fully manifested, she and Grey must remain within 50 feet of one another for her manifestation to stay stable with little to no concentration on Grey's part. He can stretch the limited tether, but only when Ysmerelda is in ectoplasmic form. When Grey starts his turn and Ysmerelda is more than 50 feet away from him (but closer than 100 feet), Grey must concentrate on the link as a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity or Ysmerelda immediately returns to the Ethereal Plane and cannot be summoned from that plane for 24 hours. This concentration can be interrupted as if it were a spell. Treat this effect's spell level as equal to 1 + 1 per 10 feet farther than 50 feet that Ysmerelda is from Grey (maximum spell level 6th). If the tether is interrupted or the check fails, Ysmerelda immediately snaps back into Grey's consciousness.
If Ysmerelda, as an ectoplasmic phantom is ever more than 100 feet away from Grey, or as an incorporeal phantom is ever 50 feet away from him or outside of line of effect from him for more than 1 round per spiritualist level Grey possesses, the tether is automatically broken; Ysmerelda immediately returns to the Ethereal Plane and can't be summoned from that plane for 24 hours.
Phantom
Shared Consciousness (Su): While Ysmerelda is confined in Grey's consciousness (but not while she's fully manifested or banished to the Ethereal Plane), she grants him the Skill Focus feat in two skills determined by the phantom's emotional focus, unless the spiritualist already has Skill Focus in those skills. It also grants a +4 bonus on saving throws against all mind-affecting effects; at 12th level, this bonus increases to +8. Lastly, once per day, when the spiritualist fails a saving throw against a mind-affecting effect, as an immediate action she can shunt that effect into the phantom's section of her consciousness instead. When she does so, she is not affected by the mind-affecting effect, but for the normal duration of that effect, the spiritualist loses the bonuses on saving throws against mind-affecting effects and the Skill Focus effects granted by her phantom, and can't use this ability to shunt a mind-affecting effect into the phantom's consciousness or manifest her phantom in any way. When a mind-affecting effect is shunted into the phantom's consciousness, spells such as dispel magic and break enchantment can be cast on Grey to end the effect's duration as if he were affected by the mind-affecting effect.

Zeal. I knew it was going to be either that or Dedication & I think that Zeal fits just a bit better.

I'm running into a bit of a quandary for her Feat. Technically, I think I could give her Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Bastardsword again & I don't really want to go for the Ubercheese of starting her out of the gate with Weapon Focus: Slam I'm uncertain what else to go for, although Toughness is pretty much always a good idea for a front-line combatant...

Piranha Strike is nice.

Also MAJOR thing about Phantom's slams: they're aren't their fists, they're whatever they used in life. The iconic Phantom's slam attacks for instance are his longsword and shield.

Lust is nice, it just really doesn't mesh with Ysmerelda. I would almost consider Remorse, but that really didn't 'fit' her either.

My suspicion is that they moved it up because Flight is a bit overpowered at first level...
