Startled by being addressed since she was just quietly listening to everyone and just being her usual quiet self.
"Oh. .um It lasts quite a while, maybe an hour now? Maybe a little less than an hour. I. . .haven't ever timed it so,"
In regards to the half-orcs story, "That sounds like a pretty scary place. . where I grew up it was all farmlands, rivers, wetlands and forrests. . I sure hope there is at least one friendly person over there. . "

![]() |

Fortunately, Vralk was distracted by the stew and didn't notice the Tengu claiming that HE was a kid who had to be LOOKED AFTER
"I will scout ahead from the air and lead my group safely across these wastes"
When we leave, Vralk would fly fairly high up to try and spot orc warbands but be mostly out of arrow shot.

![]() |

"Won't turn down an honest meal by hard-working folks, dear. And thank you for the insight, it's really helpful to know these sorts of things." Andrietta offers respectfully and politely before glancing to Stali.
"Just how big and heavy is your contraption, anyway? I might be able t' fit it in my bags? That way if we need it for something, we're not leaving valuable gear behind?"

![]() |

Earlier at the lodge.
"Eits weighs about the same as a large sack of potatoes, but can fly all day so there is no reason to carry it."
40 lbs.
He checks it's windings as he says "I thought leaving it behind a good idea because it breaks easily and I couldn't think of a reason we would need to record any sounds."
Now
Looking to Sarano, he says "So plan for every forty to forty-five minutes to be safe?" He nods, "That should work just fine!"

![]() |

Stali's suggestion is well founded, sound, and reasonable.

GM Hmm |

Earlier at the lodge
Mol will happily store any gear you want to leave behind, and write it in the ledger. “Oh, that's lovely,” she says, looking at Eits. "Are you sure you want to leave it behind? I can see how something like this can help with the documentation for your chronicles, but I understand wanting safe storage."
Over the border
Zohruk wishes you well and sends you along your way. "Take care out there, and let me know any interesting you see. Belkzen is always changing, and intel is precious to me. Best of luck with your mission."
After a few hours of travel, the landscape of Belkzen is bleak. Barren, dusty and dry, the wind tastes of ash and distant smoke. In the high ground, the only plant life are lichens and a few thick-leaved succulents. In the low ground, there is some evidence that this land becomes a verdant floodplain when spring hits. For now though, it just looks dead. Stali spots a wide variety of drought-resistant plants, lying in a limp and dormant state. There are scattered dry trees, presumably with very deep roots, caves and rocky formations, and tall tinder-dry grasses. With Stali and Chak scouting ahead, and Vralk flying high, the group makes excellent progress into the hinterlands.
Stali and Chak scout ahead on the ground. Hidden in the tall and brittle grasses, they narrowly evade a group of orc warriors, some of whom are half-dragging limping and wounded comrades. A bit more disturbingly, you they come across evidence of what may have been the bodies of several orc hunting parties as you travel. The orc bodies appear to have been charred, torn apart and mostly eaten, with bits of flesh and bone scattered far from the original corpses.
Survival and heal checks, anyone? As always, you may take ten.

When he finds the corpses, Stali calls it in but warns he needs to check it isn't an ambush. Once he is sure it isn't, he asks the others to help him figure out what happened to the orcs.
"This doesn't look like a pyre or bonfire!"

"Not really sure but it definitely looks like they're eating each other. So Orcs are much smarter than people in a few respects. Never understood the human tendency to bury perfectly good meat"

"Vralk. . the mighty, he says he drove off two bands of orcs, lets tread carefully in case they come back. . "

Stali scans the sky, wondering if there is another explanation for the fleeing orcs. "We might want to find cover. Orcs aren't that easy to scare."

![]() |

"I wouldn't want to run into whatever orcs are fleeing from... except if it's Vralk of course. And yet, we aren't going to achieve our goals here if we run and hide at every boogeyman we suspect is out there... Without more surveillance, we really don't know what they might be fleeing from ... or to."

![]() |

"Gryphon? Maybe a manticore? Just guessing at the moment...I haven't seen anything yet."

GM Hmm |

Truly, there has never been a crow more terrifying than Vralk the Mighty. All the orc warrior bands flee from his terrifying visage.
Bluff: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
Yep, Hilary is full of it. As usual.
___
It's great that you've had so much medical training, Sarano. You can tell that these guys were hit with fire blasts in two separate directions. One of the blasts came from above, the other at ground level. However, you can also tell that a bunch of them were hit by arrows before they died, and at least one was CDGed with some sort of slashing weapon.

![]() |

Analyzing the battlefield and the charred remains, trying not to cry at the smell of the charred dead remains, she manages to describe how they died none the less.
“these guys were hit with fire blasts in two separate directions. . . One of the blasts came from above, the other at ground level.” Taking a moment to compose herself,
” However, a bunch of them were hit by arrows before they died, and at least one was executed with some sort of slashing weapon.”
Holding a finger and pointing at Vralk flying high above, ”Vralk be careful, you may not be alone, I think there is a dragon or something up there with you,”

![]() |

Nodding, Stali says "That matches with the scorch marks we found." He gestures in the general direction where he had seen the blasts. "They were herded into an ambush."

GM Hmm |

Disturbed but not deterred from your mission, you camp overnight in one of the caves, and your watches go undisturbed. The next morning you set out early, with not an orc in sigh. It does not take you long to find Kala’s tears, a rocky mountain that soars over the landscape. Halfway up, you see a rocky ledge with entrance that you seek.
How do you proceed?

Andrietta was mostly quiet the previous day, as the party hit most of the salient points and her murmurings were prayers that if it was a dragon, that it not notice this small flock on the arid plains.
Today she seems a bit more focused, however.
"Can Vralk see into that entrance area from his perspective, Gallako? No matter what, though, we need to approach this with caution and hopefully find some stairs, because climbing up that doesn't look promising."

![]() |

Stali mentions "I have rope and a grappling arrow. I could see how far I get climbing, and then lower a knotted rope for the rest of the group."

![]() |

"If that doesn't work, I have a potion of fly... was hoping to save it for an emergency, like a flying foe, but if we need it here, so be it."

![]() |

Assuming 50 feet of rope is sufficient...
Only one way to see, find out, and discover is to try.
Chak loads his own grappling arrow, silk rope trailing behind, and fires it at the opening.
Longbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Of course it might be safer to go, proceed, and advance together.
Chak will wait for Stali to fire up another rope before trying to climb.

![]() |

"Of course I can see into the chaasm. And I can carry a rope for you poor land bound people if necessary"
Vralk first flies overhead and tries to see in. If nothing immediately dangerous appears, he goes in to see how far down things are

![]() |

Stali gets out his shortbow and fires a line up near Chak's.
Shortbow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Nodding to Chak, he then proceeds to climb as quietly as he can.
Climb: 10 + 5 = 15
Stealth: 10 + 13 = 23

![]() |

Looking around, up and down and watching her allies assess this rocky situation, "I'm. . I'm not sure I'll be able to climb that far. . "

![]() |

"Maybe we can tie the rope around you and pull you up... then lower it back for anyone who stays behind to guard you. Would that work for you? If not, I can always fly you up."

![]() |

Sarano will pull her backpack around and dig around, pulling out her own length of 50 ft of silk rope, "Well . . I'm not some pack animal. . maybe we can use my rope and knot one of the ropes, then I'm sure I could climb up,"

![]() |

"I didn't mean to insult... or imply you're baggage or anything... just trying to help." he sighs... touchy

GM Hmm |

Stali and Chak climb, quietly. Vralk flies over the ridge.
Vralk's Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Unfortunately, he doesn't notice the two orc archers hidden just inside the cave until the first arrow is shot out at him...

Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
...and hits.
Composite Short Bow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
"Ha! En fugl! Godt, vi har brug for praksis!" One of the orcs comes out of the cave, excited. He is well dressed for an orc, with a neat military uniform and a red arm band.
The other one similarly dressed, comes out and grumbles, "Nødder, savnede jeg. Alle fumle fingre i dag."
"Nuts, I missed. I'm all fumble fingers today."
I saw nothing about mage armor in Vralk's current status field, so I have to assume it is not currently on.
At this point, Chak and Stali are just reaching the top. What do you do?
(Because they are archers, sitting in the entrance to the Dungeon, I am going to use a different map so that we can include the terrain outside the dungeon. I have a map on SLIDE THREE, but have not put down all the minis yet, as the orcs are as yet unaware of the rest of you.)

![]() |

Once the rope is lowered, with knots hopefully, Hikaru will wait until Sarano is up safely before removing his chain shirt, putting it in the haversack to reduce weight, and climbing up himself...
climb: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Once at the top if that's enough for the climb, he'll quickly slip on his chain shirt again.

![]() |

Stali peeks over the ledge. He then sneaks over to one of the large rocks and fastens the end of his rope securely. He picks a position where anyone coming up can't be seen from the entrance. Hopefully Vralk is alright. He better not lead those orcs to us before the others get up here!
Once the rope is secure, he shakes it so people know it is set to climb and then looks over to see what Chak is doing.

GM Hmm |

Hikaru, that is enough to make the climb. Stali and Chak, it is fine to place yourselves. Can I have stealth rolls from everyone else making that climb? Don't worry, I am taking distance in account.

GM Hmm |

Chak has a moment where his food slips, but not enough for him to fall. He tries again...
Climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
...and makes it up, just past Sarano.
I'm waiting for Andrietta and Gallako.

The grandmother is surprisingly shocked when she makes it to the top of the cliff in one piece and not falling to her death as she anticipated. As Stali and the other stealthier components of the team make their approach, she does her job, which is to try and be clanky, loud, and draw attention while getting to cover.
Double Move, full speed, no stealth

Ah, but then we weren't in rounds or initiative... Now we are!
"Hellige lort! Har fuglen vokse?" The red orc looks momentarily surprised as he sees Andrietta standing obviously in the foliage.
"Nej, det havde ikke panser før!" Blue says, reasonably. Then he gives a nasty grin. "Det er stort heldige vi behøver ikke en ovn til at stege det!"
Both laugh at his joke, then Gallako sings.
"Clear at en, hurtigt!" Red looks troubled. "Der er flere af dem ..."
"Nope. Tha armor's new!" "Good thing we won't need an oven to roast that one!"

Hikaru moves closer so he can get to the door soon. I said he moved up so he was within rushing distance of the door, but never moved his icon... so now it's moved... next round maybe he can charge up there.. or at least get closer.
