Oh I figured making sure it was OK with the regent there was part of it (I thought maybe that was what the diplomacy was for?). I don't want my trade goods getting seized and my route attacked.

Do I need to do some other action prior to this, then? Like sending a letter to Gavin Taele and awaiting reply?

Well, Gavin Taele doesn't like it when you build a trade route and wants a cut in on the action. As in, higher taxes. You have to pay 1 gold bar in tribute to the great Gavin Taele.

OK, I figured it would work out something like that. A cut of my profits, but in the end I still get some profit. Just not all that I would have.

So I think establishing that route was all I planned on doing. Just sorta trying to learn the rules by doing things.

I'd like to build a new structure for my people. I am thinking something like the coliseum but on a not quite so grand scale. Use it as a marketplace during off times and for entertainment on certain days. Should increase both morale and economy and maybe attract some sword talent.

That would be a decree at it's basic. If you want to make it a government project, that will incur a cost of 5GB to build something like a Roman Bath.

I'll start to work through my turn hopefully tonight as an example.

First thing we need to fix: Table 5-9 of Birthright.net uses ranks for the % of regency and probably other things. 1st level characters started with 4 ranks if it was a class skill in 3.5. In Pathfinder, the 3 point differential of the class skill is added bonus, so we need an official adjustment. The easiest fix would be to reduce the left column of Table 5-10 by 6, so it tops out at 4+ for 100%. However, Elton needs to rule and post the revised rules on the Campaign tab, so we don't forget.

so as near as i can tell, i spent 2 GB to get my newest trade route going and have received 1 GB in return, so i'm at a net -1 GB in treasury (save the income from other routes, which i assume is 1/4th of 30 or 7.5 GB) and regency is the same (or is regency +30/yr?). please correct me if i am wrong.

I only count 16 GB of income. provinces earn full value; law earn 1/3; temple earn 2/3; and guilds earn 2/3

You want a court, or you take negatives to diplomacy and other actions.

Often assets have many seasons before payback.

I didn't check your RP, but you need 2 ranks in the following skills to earn 100% of your RP collection: knowledge (religion), lead, diplomacy, warcraft, Appraise + Bluff + Craft (any) + Diplomacy + Gather information + Intimidate + Profession (any one) + Sense motive.
