Backstory:
When Daen Roesone died at the hands of his son Ivil and the eldest son Raemel was brutally murdered the young lover of the eldest son fled and had their child in secret (Gaius' father) when he was older Maximus (see above) left his mother to venture into the world where he stumbled into the elvish forests and by trials of strength and wit he won his life among the elves and took an elven lover. Years passed as time does in the elvish forests and Gaius was born. Raised with other children of his upbringing (half elves) as well as the children of the elves, he was trained with sword, lance, and bow. When he grew to adulthood his father told him of their families past, Gaius wished to leave the forests and confront these distant cousins of his.
Gaius was gifted with several companions who also wished to leave the bowers of their home. With his friends he ventured towards Roesone. On his travels Gaius was treated with scorn and rejection from the humans of Anuire due to his elvish blood. What surprised Gaius the most was the fact the events that his father told him about which seemed only 30 odd years ago was in actuality almost double that time. It took Gaius almost six months to find the city of Proudglaive, the capital of Roesone, again he was met with suspicion and contempt from the human populace. Gaius vowed he would right this wrong if he had any say in this, to be judged merely for his blood.
Gaius after a time staying withen the city made his way to the Baroness' castle and in front of the square pronounced himself as Gaius Anphelan Roesone, grandson of Raemel, and the rightful ruler of Roesone and bore proof of these statements. The guards confronted with a challenge to the throne, and several heavily armed and trained bodyguards to Gaius, escorted him to the throne room where Gaius met Marlae Roesone, Baroness of Roesone, as well as her brother Daenal Roesone heir to the throne. Though surrounded by her guards Gaius challenged her for the right of the throne in single combat and if she could not face him herself, then to name her champion as due to the laws of trial by combat.
Surprisingly on the dawn of the trial Gaius faced not Daenal but Marlae herself. The duel was to take place in the palace gardens away from the masses. The combat that ensued was one sided for a time Marlae using her strength and experience against Gaius' speed and intelligence. The duel raged for several minutes with both combatants breaking away from, the fight with mere cuts and scratches bespeaking of their skill at arms.
"Why have you come here? You know only a true scion of blood can rule Roesone in the face of all she faces!" Marlae snarled as she circled around her opponent.
"I am a true scion of the blood I come here not to invade but to reclaim my birthright!" Gaius shouted back at her as he matched her stride for stride.
Taken aback by the vehemence in his voice Marlae hesitated, just for a mere second but it was enough, Gaius charged forward his full body behind his shield. Marlae easily side stepped the heavy blow and even caught the swift thrust that followed after. However, now he was inside her longer blades guard and was unable to respond. She didn't see as Gaius slipped his foot inside the space of hers and as he again bashed with his shield he used his foot as a fulcrum. Marlae found herself lying on her back, her breath knocked out of her and Gaius blade resting at her throat.
"Do you yield?" He asks breathing heavily.
"I will never yield Roesone to an invader!" She growled up at him.
"Truly? Then will you not yield to the rightful heir?" He paused then and stepped away from her after watching her rise he thrust his sword into the earth and began rolling up his sleeve to expose the spiraling birthmark that proclaimed him as a true scion of the blood.
"Yield to me Marlae and I promise that yours and your family will come to no harm. Yield to me and I would have you as my right hand to show unity in the face of our enemies. Yield to me and I would lead Roesone to her rightful place in this world."
And so it was that the duel between Gaius Anphelan and Marlae Roesone ended with Gaius unarmed and the former Baroness kneeling offering her sword in fealty to the new Baron of Roesone.
Rumors:
It is said that the new Baron intends on issuing new proclamations regarding citizenship and the military.
Gaius is said to be ruling without regard to nobility or race. He goes by the letter of the law and if no law is written he issues new ones that are fair and equal.
He has opened every door to those of the elven and half elven blood stating past wounds must be healed before progress can ever be made.
Food and drink is being gathered and large groups of riders are setting off in all directions as if carrying the sane message to all corners of the land. One was even seen riding to Ghoere.
Gaius often secrets himself away from court locking himself withen the war room with the minister of realm security and his generals.
