The way you came. The dwarves are clearly trying to prevent you from moving forward.

If you wish, defy danger to avoid the final attack and withdraw to safety.

It's taken time, sending dancers to do the work from a distance, but Sona has something routed that might get things moving again. She's managed to slowly split and mingle a few of the dancing nodes into a pattern that's about to coalesce into a set of instructions for the ship's systems. Hopefully it will keep the ICE busy just untangling the mess, but there's a good chance she's going to catch some serious heat from this.

She sets the last domino in place (privately acknowledging the pun) and contacts her team.

I'd like to decouple the self-destruct warning system from the actual self-destruct system, and trigger it. I'm ready to get back into the action, should that bring down ICE. Since Sona's not good at breaking, it's going to be a game of hide and seek.

You attempt to blast out of there in a hurry but you face a choice:

1. You can escape but one dwarven blade will make a glancing blow for half damage after armor, or
2. You avoid the immediate strike but are surrounded. You must strike down one of the dwarves before you can escape.

Although you have little difficulty holding on, Melphits' blood tastes sour and burns in your mouth. If you continue to drink, remove any blood previously gained from Melphits. You may spend 2 blood to ignore the tainted blood and finish Melphits off. Otherwise release him.

My intent was that you wouldn't gain any blood from this guy, and you'd have to spend it to drink. Essentially reversing your move. Behind the scenes, I realized that we have never done anything with hunger for your character yet, so I decided to use up some resources to bring that mechanic back into play. I've never GM'd the vampire before, so I'm going to get a handle on how it is supposed to work.

I am not a good Dungeon World GM. The reason I know this is that I hesitate to do this, instead of relishing it. Still, I must do what the fiction demands.

Please picture this montage with me.

Sona, dancing with a lovely man, finishes twirling to a new group of dancers, where she whispers into a nearby ear.

Star wipe to:

2BR, flying through an enormous corridor at high speed. The murderbot's head scans the area until locking on to a specific target just off scene. A self-destruct alarm begins blaring.

Cut to:

A close up of an amulet clasped by a glowing blue hand, looking much like Dr. Manhattan.

Cut to:

Jamee, sitting at his control console as he hears the caster's last words. The young elf stands and yells Wait!

Split screen to:

Retzack, draining the last drop of blood out of Melphits, before dropping the corpse to the floor. The vampire looks up at the warning relayed through BoT's speakers.

Triple split to:

Dexter, reaching out to take hold of the amulet. As his fingers clasp the amulet, Jamee yells once more, No!

Zoom to panel with Dexter:

Dexter hesitates for a moment and the camera zooms out and goes into slow motion as 2BR, angel of death, descends on the glowing elf. Its one hand smashes through the back of the elven head.

Cut to a close up of Jamee's face. The young elf closes his eyes tightly.

Zoom out to wide shot of the whole group as the glowing elf explodes in a blue fiery ball of death. The fire consumes the group one by one, first 2BR and Dexter, then BoT, and finally Retzack.

2BR, you have no time to react, take 1d10 ignoring armor as you are blasted backwards against the far wall.

Dexter, take one half of 1d10 ignoring armor and the concussed debility as you somehow stand against the fire.

BoT and Retzack, you have a split second to react. What do you do?

Exploding Elf is a classic 6- move brought to you by BoT's wonderful dice!

Ah. Fair' nuff. And, yes, the loss of another 2 blood will put me quite low. Mind you, the Hunger mechanic seems quite fine except for thing about attacking the nearest creature, but so long as you don't hammer on that like it's the only lever worth pulling I sure things won't get...too out of hand. ;)

Retzack spends half his reservoir of precious life force to muscle his way past the distasteful fluid of the elf to put him under. He lets the body drop with a thump and uncharacteristically leans heavily against the nearest wall.
Any onlookers are certain that, did he breath, he would be taking great, huge gasps of air.

Despite the excitement about him and the urgency of the moment, he slides down the wall and takes out his hip flask, uncaring of any other event. He fills his mouth, the triple-digit-proof bourbon burning his mouth slightly, and he swishes the booze around, desperately trying to get rid of the taste. He swallows the fluid down and, having gotten his bearings back, leans heavily on a knee and stands back up.

He thinks about searching the elf but...doesn't really have the energy right now.

Retzack:

You can escape harm by shielding yourself with Melphits body, but his possessions will be burned away. Otherwise, you can take full damage (1d10 ignoring armor).

What do you do?

Sona:

1) What here is not as it seems?

You watch the face of one of the dancers as a light swoops down to inspect it. There is a momentary flash of intense pain, and the face changes, it becomes passive and almost inert. These lights are not inspecting the dancers, they are reformatting them.

2) What here is useful or valuable to me?

You locate a data server and download a large database of AoS activities, charts, notes, and assets. Take +1 ongoing to all spout lore checks that involve information that could be in this database.

3) What is about to happen?

You notice a subtle shift in the pattern of the lights floating above the dancers. They are honing in on you.

The dancers in your immediate vicinity begin to crowd you. You haven't seen this particular pattern before.

What do you do?

Jamee, I'll get to BoT when you get a chance to post.

Everyone:

The corridor is quiet save for the self-destruct alarm blaring. You pick yourselves up and regroup. 2BR shows signs of extreme damage, but it only serves to make him look more intimidating. You have a moment to collect yourselves.

Let's have EoS moves.

I'd like to introduce two moves as we go forward. The first is a rewrite of Defy Danger that I posted in the discussion thread:

When you act despite an imminent threat or suffer a calamity, say how you deal with it and roll. If you do it

by powering through, +Str
by getting out of the way or acting fast, +Dex
by enduring, +Con
with quick thinking, +Int
through mental fortitude, +Wis
using charm and social grace, +Cha

✴On a 7+, you do what you set out to and the specific threat doesn’t come to bear.

✴On a 7–9, describe how the situation worsens for your character, the party, or the world. If the GM is impressed by your creative masochism, mark XP.

The second is a tweak of Jason Cordova's Labyrinth move. I'd like to see how this works out in play.

When you search for the prisoners on the Hierophant, describe how you search and roll +STAT (STR, DEX etc. as fictionally justified).

On a 6-, the GM will tell you what happens
On a 7-9, gain 1 hold and expose yourself to the dangers of the Hierophant.
On a 10+, gain 1 hold or gain 2 hold and expose yourself to the dangers of the Hierophant.

At any time the party may spend 1 hold to come across a valuable location. This may contain a cache of valuables or resources, provide safe harbor, etc. Describe the area.

At any time the party may spend 3 hold to find the prisoners.

The idea behind the move is to abstract the process of navigating through a dungeon. I'm curious to see how it might work out.

End of Session

When you reach the end of a session, choose one of your bonds that you feel is resolved (completely explored, no longer relevant, or otherwise). Ask the player of the character you have the bond with if they agree. If they do, mark XP and write a new bond with whomever you wish.

Once bonds have been updated look at your alignment. If you fulfilled that alignment at least once this session, mark XP. Then answer these three questions as a group:

Did we learn something new and important about the world?
Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy?
Did we loot a memorable treasure?

1) Alignment/Drive: This session I put myself in danger to save my friends, but the threat I was protecting them from wasn't "unnatural" in any way. No XP here.

2) Updated bond with Bunkr-Bustr : It's easier than I thought it would be to guide Toober to destroy what we need to destroy. I want to make sure he can't be turned against us so easily. +1
New Bond: Dexter may be a mere human, but he's resourceful and has the instincts to shot-call in combat. He might grow in respect among this group very quickly - I should keep an eye on that.

3a) Vampires - honest to goodness Vampires - still exist. I didn't know that before, thought they were myth. +1
3b) The Hierophant's defenses were notable, also I landed the Sixes real clean-like. +1
3c) Memorable treasure? Eh, I got the spear from the dude I was fighting planet-side, but it hasn't served me very well yet.

+3 total brings me to 14 XP, which allows me to level from 4 to 5 and brings my XP down to 2. I will pick:

Viper’s Strike

When you strike an enemy with two weapons at once, add an extra 1d4 damage for your off-hand strike.

Now, I just need to find some melee weapons. Currently I have no weapons and no ammo for my blaster pack. I need to forage for some offensive options ASAP.

Why am I not surprised that Sona's a fan of the Kushiel's Dart series of books?

As for that explosion that I almost got caught up in, I'll Hurl myself backward, aided by my Jetpack, to escape! Dex: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3) + 3 = 10

Aww yeah. Scot-free! Or mostly scot free, up to you GM.

I think the last time you saw your Jetpack it was careening down the corridor attached to an elf. I'll take that roll though to avoid the repercussions.

Alignment: Inflict suffering? Hell to the yeah! +1

For treasure, I'd say Retzack's Epoch Lens. It's storied and interesting and I'm keen to see what we find with it. +1, +2 for Jamee's answers.

Bonds: "Jamee understands me perfectly, even though I am a robot" has been hanging around for a while now, and I'm just not feeling it any more, so resolving that one, +1. Maybe something involving Dexter? I'll keep this open for a little while.

Dexter retrieves his phaseblade (well... it technically may belong to Sona, so maybe not his phaseblade), and turns it off (Not unset, just safe to carry in a pocket. then he sets off down one of the corridors, no way to search like searching, just jogging room to room, and checking what is inside, on and on, time consuming and exhausting, but the best way to do it.

searching the hierophant with Con: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2) + 3 = 6

And the f~%#ing phaseblade promply turns itself back on, skewering his leg, because why wouldn't it...

Are you suggesting my weapons have a manufacturing fault? You must have done something to void the warranty. You end users and your fat sausage fingers...

Sona risks the heightened security to try to give her crew some advantage in their search.

Search(INT): 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 4) + 3 = 13
2 please
The decklights, usually indicating evacuation paths during self-destruct, change direction and begin indicating toward the brig.

Dexter finds:

Spike of Woodland Suicides. Sort of like a hunter's trap. When left in natural areas, wild animals and small fey creatures will come and impale themselves on it. A verdant forest yields 1d10 rations worth per day, but must be moved daily. Fey will hate you, though.

BoT finds:

King Scamalot. A small silver figurine of a king that, when given away, will return to your pocket after 1d10 minutes. The only way to permanently get rid of it is for the recipient to similarly give it away before the 1d10 minutes expire. Alternatively, the original owner could die. This is great for scamming people. Apparent value: 1d100 gold.

OR

Poppins’ Parachute. An umbrella that allows you float downwards at 60'/round when open, negating fall damage.

Sona finds plans to construct on her forge:

Statuette of Baal. Can be "fed" gold to grow larger, adding to its mass (does not create or destroy gold, just absorbs it). Starts out the size of a gold coin. It becomes more complex as it grows larger, adding realism and features to its statuary. At 10,000 gold it is as large as a real person. If grown to the size of 100,000 gold, it sits on a mighty steed and gains a solid slab foundation with a plaque that reveals some great secret. If grown to 1,000,000 gold, it will come alive and try to take over the world.

OR

Stick of the Giant. The size of a long and thick quarterstaff (though for the giant it’s a small cudgel). (close, reach, +1 dam). Can be swung mightily once for double damage, but then breaks.

Retzack finds:

Naiad-hair Helmet. 50% cursed. When worn, PC moves through all water as if it had the consistency of a gas (don't fall off a boat in deep waters). Water is still unbreathable.

OR

Silver silk handkerchief. 3' on a side. It has a command word embroidered on it. When looked at from one side, the command word appears backwards due to the stitching going through the silk. When the command word is spoken normally, the silk handkerchief comes to the speaker’s hand as soft silk but fast (moving in a straight line 20 spaces per turn). When the command word is spoken in reverse, the
silk becomes as hard as steel. With practice, it can be hurled while saying the command word in reverse to slice through things or cut into them and recalled by speaking the word in reverse. (Near, Far, Volley with CHA, cannot consume Ammo)

2BR finds:

Prayer of the Seal. When this sheet of paper is attached to a door or portal, it become locked (until the paper is removed or destroyed.)

Why no, I did not find a book of 100 quirky system neutral magic items to roll a 1d100 against ... what makes you ask?

Male Human Survivor | Lvl 4 | XP: 4 | HP: 17/27 | Gambit 0 | Armor 1 | 1d10 | STR +1 | DEX +1 | CON +2 | INT 0 | WIS -1 | CHA +2

Ummmm... Retzy, I'll trade you the sadistic stick-thing for the magic hanky :)

Lucky Sixes: 12/12 HP | Useful Links: Quick Reference | Sheets

I didn't even think about the silver. The silk handkerchief does not have any silver in it.

Definitely taking Sir Scamalot. Free money at the expense of my reputation! Easy!

Kushiel needs an ally in the coming war against God MomCo. I'll take the statue of Baal.

I say we drop that into a dragon vault and leave. Much easier than carrying all that gold around anyway.
