If we can 'Take 20' on wealth checks, I would have a few different things noted down:
On trip:
HKPSG1 instead of RemingtonI really can't justify to myself having automatic weaponry on a non-military person ;-)
Again from an european perspective... so you take a special forces grade sniper rifle. ;-)
I had the honor to life and have fun while doing my active duty in the german army, in those days, next to the german militry special forces and was a few times allowed to use their weapons. They used a psg1 ;-) And boy I do not want to carry that one hiking!
inxpitter
Still working on Edwin Harrison but making steady progress. Unfortunately, most of what he owns would be kept in his car on the drive up. Like his normal mechanics tools that he keeps in the trunk for work. But I can't really justify him buying extensive camping gear for just one trip.
Anderlorn
Do as you want, as long as you carry it :-).
You have to explain it to park rangers and policemen.
The HK PSG is a very nice weapon and yeah it is heavy but that is part of the reason why it is good ... :-)
Believe or not, a Barrett is not on the real life illegal or restricted list unless the park has a regulation against it. Although, you may receive looks but probably will not be hassled. The real problem having a Barrett, is the initial weapon cost, weight, and the realistic cost of ammo. Although, reloading may save you a bunch of money if you shoot it all the time. I think the main reason why is the average cost of the weapon is around $8,000 and I have hear people paying $12K for one. In addition, they are rare because Barrett largest customer is of course the world militaries.
As for military grade equipment for none a military person, the game doesn't list semi-auto carbines that my character would purchase. Personally, as a former military, I rather have semi-auto. Full auto just wastes ammo and machine guns do what they do the best, keep heads down and hit those who decide to pop their heads up and/or become careless. An assault rifle really does not need this feature because a soldier has a more limited ammo supply than crew served weapons.
I am still working on my character as well but he is coming together like I want. There are some things that are not meshing as well as I want but I am working around them.

On my character's background, instead of using wealth to purchase cars, lifestyle, houses, islands and etc, they are all basically lost until they are either taken back (which can be a GM created scenario), stolen (from either raiders or we become raiders), found along the way (such as abandoned or Zombie/Human cleared dwellings and vehicles), or built by us since there will be an increase in available property free of monetary charge but may require some blood and sweat.

I did live in Texas as an exchange student, see it as friendly bickering from my char, who is a german exchange student.
I am totally cool with it, really, but I just give you a view from someone who joins the camping trip with his fellow students and one carries one of those and who is not used to weapons like that. Trust me in the end, I will be happy.
Anderlorn
Mr GM,
How are we starting? We know each other? Becoming to know each other (meaning we all decide to hide out in the same building)? Or we are going to run into each other and take the risk that we all will work together as humanity's last stand?
I am doing this for both role play and background purposes.
Also, are firearms touch weapons in d20?

That's how I have been seeing it anyway. There are parts of all countries I like, and then there are parts I can do without even in the US.

So the group will have all been part of the same 30 day guided tour of the BWCA territory. So you will all have spent the last 30 days with each other. Some characters can have a further history with each others but not required.
Firearms are ranged weapons and subject to all range weapons rules.

Backstory of Richard Sauerbruch:
Son of a couple of pharmacist in a small town north of Munich, Germany called Freising. Always a good student and a bookworm he was expected to take over his parents pharmacy, so he started to study pharmacy at the Ludwig-Maxemilian-University. After his final exams his parents decided offered him the chance to study abroad. As his girlfiend is a airhostess for Lufthansa he took the chance. After a succesful semester he was offered a place in a hiking trip. As Wibke, his girlfriend, had to join a 14 week seminar he accepted. Afterwards he wanted to return home and marry her.

Can we add this in and what will be the wealth roll be?
Also do equipment bonuses for weight, stack? Personally I think they should because they both distribute weight differently but of course I am not the GM ... lol.
The Backpack my character purchased add a +1 Str equipment bonus to carrying capacity and the Mesh Vest adds +2 Str bonus.
~Thanks

Are we allowed to take 20 on our second wealth roll?
No can't take 20 on roll to gain wealth after gaining a level. Taking 20 is only possible where multiple rolls can take place. It assumes that you roll until you get a 20. In the case of level up Wealth you would only get 1 roll. In case of trying to buy something you can go around and around until you find someplace that has the item at the price you need. This is what taking 20 in game mechanics represents. The ruling of taking 20 applies to all checks. So can you take 20 on a Search roll yes but it will take 20 times the time to do one check. I won't allow 20 on checks that merit a single roll. Anytime you are taking 20 to do something that normally would be a single roll there's a chance of some event happening during your check.

Not sure what the game rule is on this. I have no problem with them stacking as you are describing. However two of the same items wouldn't stack if you were somehow wearing two Mesh Vests it wouldn't add +4.

Ok looked at the item in the link. Sure we can include it. It is a relatively rare item. The weight of the whole unit is 5 lbs. 7.5 lbs if you want to use 2 of the Nomad 20 (Solar panel units) as recommended. With one solar panel it will take 20 hours of sun to fully charge the Sherpa 100. Two panels cuts that down to 10 hours. Now onto the more difficult thing which is wealth costs for items not covered by the RAW. Looking over comparable costs and rarity (I know with ebay and Amazon this shouldn't impact but it looks like it does on the published items and I don't want to have to redo the entire wealth system for character generation when it won't be used when the game starts. Here is what I have decided below.
Sherpa 100 - Wealth 12Nomad20 by itself - Wealth 6
Sherpa 100 with additional Nomad20 - Wealth 13
So feel free to purchase as you wish. See my next note about advice for Wealth Purchases.

D20 Modern Wealth Basics
Lots of questions about this so putting down some notes for everyone.
Finding Wealth Level
Wealth is 2d4 at Level 1 you add in any bonuses from Occupation and/or Windfall Feat. Add to this +1 if the character took any ranks in Profession.
This is your starting Level 1 Wealth. Then after assigning skill ranks for Level 2 make a Profession Check against Level 1 Wealth Level as DC. Add 1 to Wealth for success plus another +1 for every 5 over.
This would be your characters total Starting Wealth Level.
Spending Wealth Rules
Items with Wealth DC below 15 AND below your current Wealth level are FREE no Wealth deductions.
Otherwise purchasing items lowers your Wealth as follows.
15 or higher +1 point
Tier 1: 1–10 points higher than current Wealth bonus 1 point
Tier 2: 11–15 points higher than current Wealth bonus 1d6 points
Tier 3: 16 or more points higher than current Wealth Bonus. 2d6 points
Spending Wealth Advice
1. Take your free items first this don't reduce your wealth and your wealth will only go down as you buy other items.
2. IF you have a high wealth starting bonus (>15) take items that are below your wealth level but above 15. This only results in a minus 1.
3. Starting with lowest tier buy items in each tier with highest DC first before your wealth dwindles down and pushes items into another tier. Exception if an item is 15 or so above your wealth buy before items jump to the next tier.
4. Save the 16 or more points above your wealth for last.
Closing Remarks
I hope this helps and I want to remind everyone that wealth system will go away after the character generation so consider the benefit of that Windfall feat and balance it with the fact that it will not be used going forward.

I had a link earlier in the thread but to make easier, here you go.
He looks older than he really is because of genetics (but he does have an genetic related illness), stress, and maturity for age.
In other words, I couldn't find an Avatar I wanted to use ... lol
He looks more like this guy ...
except he is wearing clothing that is more settle and civilian like this ...
Marcus want to be ready but not look official and draw more attention than necessary. Looking like a Fed, LEO, or Military personnel will draw more attention to you than if you look like just a civilian with a rifle.

Yeah know it a cellular phone is cheaper than a digital camera. All sorts of weirdness when you price lock from 10 years ago. I don't really want to get bogged down in fixing 2025 prices on everything since it hasn't arrived yet. D20 Future has a rule that things from a previous PL setting have a -2 to Purchase DC in later settings. I think that by 2025 Earth is probably somewhere between PL5 and PL6. I think that in early 2000s we were squarely in PL5.
As such I will allow items on the General Equipment table under the Computers and Consumer Electronics to have an effective -2 DC. Feel free to adjust wealth as required to comply.
Anderlorn missed that part about suppressors weighing 4 pounds. But that only applies to a rifle suppressor not handgun suppressor which is 1 pound. Research tells me 2 pounds is more realistic. Also in my pm I failed to add the (Res+3) to the DC of Suppressor so it wouldn't be a free item after all but would cost 1 wealth for being >DC15.
Anderlorn
I didn't miss it, thought they were nuts, then looked it up. The suppressor for the MDR weighs 7.6 ounces and I rounded it off to .5. Even half a pound is a significant weight addition and it is also about gas redirection and dispersion. Imagine adding 4 pounds to the front of a rifle and make the rifle weigh 12 - 13 pounds?

Can my character be a ranger for Boundary Waters Canoe Area and change his Occupation to Park Ranger but keep the skills he chose from Occupation Military because they still fit a Park Ranger like Drive (Ranger 4x4 Trucks), Survival (Forest Ranger duties will sometimes require survival), and Light Body Armor (they are law enforcement and should be protected by some sort of body armor).
With this change, he lives on the Park in the Ranger Station, has access to Ranger vehicles, and the Ranger Armory (but prefers his own weapon). He still owns a Chevy Spark to save money spent on fuel for his survival habit.
That is just of his new background but it will be more elaborate.

Going to deny the request. The BWCA ranger is an NPC. You are on his 30-day guided tour. If you choose you can change the background to your being a National Park ranger from a different park. But this would deny you access to the BWCA motor pool and armory as they have separate keys.

We'll say the canoe trip took place from mid June to Mid July. You return on Sunday July 13th, 2025. You can assume that current posted hunting seasons for 2016 stay the same in 2025 with all current policies in effect. Meaning if an Assault Rifle is not a legal hunting weapon during June-July than you probably wouldn't have brought it on the canoe trip. If you had such a weapon it would probably have been checked into a locker at a Ranger Station in Ely or you could have left it in your trunk a much more private but unsafe place. If I question the legality of weapon choice the burden of proof is on the player to prove otherwise.
Anderlorn
It's not hunting season but there are stipulations, here there are and taken from ... BWCA Rules
Firearms, Fireworks and Cigarette Butts
1. Firearms are not illegal if you can legally possess a firearm. Discharging a firearm is prohibited within 150 yards of a campsite, or occupied area, or in any manner or location that places people or property at risk of injury. (Marcus carries all restricted/military/licensing paper work on person in water proof document holders.)
2. Minnesota and Federal game laws apply in the BWCA (See Below)
3. Fireworks of any kind are illegal. Please leave fireworks at home. No one wants to be blamed for a large forest fire.
4. Stay out of Canada with firearms. (I don't see Marcus going there because of the Gun Laws but if you want us to earn our firearms by having to keep them in our cars, houses, Ranger Armory, this is your no argument clause ... lol!)
5. Instead of leaving your cigarette butts lay around, please burn or pack out.
6. Hunting and trapping in the BWCA is not illegal (Hunting Season begins in September so he will not be hunting, I did see something where you could be asked to destroy unruly animals if you possess a firearm and knowlege of Survival/Hunting but I have to find it again).
Currently requires no permit for Assault Rifles or Auto Pistols such as the Glock 18C.
Persons 18 and older may purchase assault weapons with a permit to purchase (or permit to carry for persons 21 and older).

Ok sounds like you could take the gun with you. You would definitely be the weirdo with an assault rifle. The other people on your 30 day trip would have probably made several complaints to the Guide already about how it makes them feel uneasy that you have an assault rifle. He has probably talked to you about it and you've shown your papers. Legally he can't do anything about it but you have made this trip a bit more difficult for him. Of course once the sh*t hits the fan that weirdo with an assault rifle might become your bestest friend ever.
Not going to force you to leave the rifle behind but the NPC guide will have a slightly negative opinion of you. The young married couple from New York City who went on this trip to "find their identity they sold as wage slaves to the corporations in NYC" probably think you're a sociopath.

So are we using the money cost from D20 Future?
Raltus sorry I missed your post it probably happened while I was responding to a post. There really isn't too much useful gear that would apply for a canoe trip from D20Future. What I meant to say is that there is a sidebar in D20Future that provides a guide for updating some Wealth DC items. Basically things from previous Progress Levels are -2 to the Wealth DC. While I still consider Us to be in the same Progress Level as when the D20 Modern book was publish computers and home electronics have drastically dropped in price to represent this drop I was saying for that table only drop the DC by 2. So a desktop computer is still 20 DC but let's imagine that is top of the line gaming computer type. Hope that helps feel free to PM or post here any further questions.

Sounds interesting. Never played d20 Modern before, so will have to look up the rules for it.
Thinking of a younger (~30) ex-Mossad agent who resigns from the intelligence agency after being held for 6 months as a hostage. Troubled by the horrors she experienced as a prisoner, she moves to Minneapolis to work for her brother who runs a small private investigation business. Her psychiatrist recommends taking the camping trip to help smooth the transition back into everyday life.

Ok Ziva ... ;-)
My character and yours should get along well. Although go with whatever class you want but we do need a sleeper zombie catcher ... I mean Fast Hero .... lol! And we need someone to teach us martial arts like combat throw and improved trip, and we need wranglers (Animal Handling, riders). Horses will make great transportation later in Zombieland. They don't require fuel, they can warn us, they can be taught to fight, they can be something to pet, they can be a zombie horde distraction, they can provide us with a higher elevation to swing horsemen weapons down on a small group of Zs, they can be used to quickly GTFO, they are quieter than vehicles, they can go where vehicles can not, there are many of them in the US and will increase in numbers, they are too fast for the average Z to catch, and they can be used as food.
Marcus wanted to get an IWI X-95 but they are not made in 7.62x51mm, yet.
