Holbrecht's attention is brought to the chariot, "Look at that. It's always nice to see what can be brought to life with just the adjudication of simple machines into a single masterpiece. Not to mention that this is as old as it is, it is a sign of an advanced culture to have mastered them so. This would be a great piece for a museum." He examines the thing to see if maybe he could figure out a way to get it out of the tomb.

Once he is satisfied with the information he can glean from the vehicle, he will also take a cursory glance at anything else of possible value, either historic or otherwise, once the rest of the group moves more eastward.

"Just so you know," Alexander says in a tone as dry as dust, "probably the only reason Akhentepi's chariot hasn't rotted into mulch yet is that there's a spell of preservation on it."

He calls to warn Neferteri and Kachu: "There is preservation magic on that chest, as well. And there are magical items inside of it. I do not know what kind; I am having trouble telling one aura from another today..."

The old man glances into the next room and grunts. "Magic on the diorama, magic on one of those shields. Nothing else. 'Ware less esoteric treachery! Also, be careful of that diorama. Shields are normally enchanted to be more effective at protecting, but that diorama might be another trap like the flaming mirror..."

Holbrecht examined the chariot, looking over it inch by inch trying to figure out both its historical value and its possible value to a collector of such things. He also was very interested in exactly how this item had got down here in the first place. The chariot was a light chariot by design, it would have had to have been fully restored and painted outside of the tomb, then disassembled, and brought down here piece by piece, and reassembled in this chamber. Time had still taken a toll on the chariot, such that using it as a vehicle would be dubious at best (though a make whole spell would fully restore it). While Holbrecht believed he could rig a pulley system to get the pieces out he did not have the expertise it would require to disassemble it. Maybe he could hire a carpenter from town to disassemble it so they could bring it up. He judged that the chariot would easily bring 100 gold on the open market as it was or 150 gold if time was taken to restore it to real working order. While circling the chariot Holbrecht took note that the animal skins were probably trophies from Akhentepi’s hunting expeditions, and had no real value, having suffered the ravages of time. He also noticed that the shield devices in each of the corners of the room were actually elaborate torch holders.

It was cooler in the tomb than on the surface even if just a little. Though perhaps that was not a good thing. Death was cold, as cold as sand that had gone untouched by the sun for thousands of years. Everything in the room was older than all of the gathered adventuring group combined, and everything seemed to imbued with a chilly aura. The kind that came from dealing with the afterlife, an austerity that existed in museums and private collections. It almost seemed like that if they touched anything, a curator would appear and angrily berate them for disturbing the silence and peace. Holbrecht had the same chilly feeling run along his back as he entered the hall and looked at the funeral masks. They were beautiful ... but also haunting. There was no magic to them, of that Alexander was sure, but sometimes magic wasn't needed to evoke a feeling, to inspire a tension and make a man break out in a cold sweat. Each one seemed to represent a different god but which one would require closer study. Each mask was gold plated and Holbrecht estimated them to be worth around 75 gold each.

Meanwhile nearby Neferteri knelt at the ornate chest with his thieves tools rolled out in front of him, already going through the picks and prods to select the right size, while he was leaving the heavy lifting to Kachu he wanted to be ready if he spied anything that could be of assistance. Carefully he now awaited the strange blue creatures attempt.

OOC:

You are welcome to include a Knowledge Religion Check on the funeral mask if you end your turn in the hall.

Slowly, carefully, Alexander makes his way into the next chamber. He looks around at the masks, his expression... empty. The old man's eyes may be taking in the sights, but his thoughts appear to be elsewhere for a moment. Then he shakes himself and takes out his journal, commencing to take down notes.

Neferteri watched the little Kachu tackle the trap with professional awe and wondered if he will ever be able to match such skill. Still he takes solace in being able to help some. with the efforts.

Working on the chest, Kachu felt the hidden blade snap out of place, all tension gone from the trap. Thankfully they hadn't broke it as both he and Neferteri knew that collectors would pay more if the trap was still intact and functioning. Most didn't even plan on using it for its function, but instead as a piece of art. Slipping his lockpicks into the ornate keyhole, he worked at the mechanism there with advice from Neferteri, together making short work of the lock. Though ancient traps were often dangerous because they were very prone to degradation and using more obscure preoperative methods, older locks were vastly easier, rust an ally and the basic way in which a lock worked never changing. With a satisfying clink, the lid popped open and the two got a good view of what was inside.

On top were two vials of a clear watery liquid and one filled with a smooth dark orange substance. Beneath them were two books, the sheen of gold glinting from the shadowy illumination of the dancing lights in the room. Though the vials were fairly plain, and likely worth what one might expect, the two books seemed to have a far greater worth. Putting the potions aside the two could almost feel the gold building up, as the books had thin, but solid, golden pages between covers. Moving over a few, Kachu or Neferteri couldn't understand a word of the two books, but Alexander made up for it with his better grasp of ancient Orisani. The first seemed to be a brief biography of Akhentepi, the second a list and description of his various military campaigns conducted for the Osirion empire between 2350 and 2450 AR. Though they were worth quite a bit, their solid gold pages made them considerably heavy, about 25 pounds.

Leaning in a bit closer, Alexander almost had to convince himself that the masks weren't alive. He was a bit more certain of both that and that the hall was not trapped in any manner since both he and Holbrecht had now breached both sides of the hall without incident. All four aligned appeared to be representations of gods. The first two both Holbrecht and Alexander knew, and likely most anyone from Orision could recognize. They were Pharasma and Abadar, two of the most popular gods in the region after the displacement of the old pantheon. However the other two were much older and harder to place, Alexander could not quite put his finger on who they were. Though the masks were not magical, they were certainly valuable.

As Alexander slowly hobbled into the next chamber he noticed something very odd. With a sculpted landscape and tiny stone and wooden statues, the diorama depicted an ancient battle between the city of Wati and an unidentified enemy. However as you watch three of these tiny wooden dolls that are part of the diorama begin moving and start clamoring down the table leg the diorama sits on. Nulyth notices Alexanders surprised look and then sees the three tiny animated dolls as they move in for the attack.

Holbrecht is busy inspecting the masks when the others get the chest open, or he would have almost run them over to get a look at those books. This is one of those situations I was talking about where you could either add a DC'd spoiler for the religion on the masks or the arcana on the dolls (as knowing things are not actions). Or even ask for the appropriate checks when introduced to a knowledge situation. It eliminates the guess work of rolling all knowledge skill as an if/then just in case (as I can do all of them untrained)

Holbrecht, much like Alexander previously just could not seem to put his finger on the identity of the final two mask.

OOC:

Alexander, this is a surprise round so you get one action, I assume you take a 5 foot step and then cast mage armor but can not attack yet.
Holbrecht, Since you did not get to act in the surprise round I will apply the knowledge checks against the dolls on your first round action. I don't like to spoiler things unless the checks are a success. You can always give me a single general roll for all knowledge's on a subject and I will apply the correct school. I try to give a knowledge hint like I did above by telling everyone in the OOC spoiler that a knowledge religion check would be required on the mask so that they would know that everyone would know it was religion.

Alexander's mind raced under the sudden attack just moments ago he had walked by Holbrecht in the hall with the mask. But the moment his foot came down, striding near the diorama, something changed. Subtly at first, the dolls scattered across the diorama and it shifted in place. Moved from side to side as ancient clay infused with magic began to crack and creak, a spell weaved more than two thousand years prior finally flaring to life. Then Alexander saw them, three tiny figures leaped from the table at rest against the northern wall. Tiny in size, they were just barely over a foot in height, faces painted and lifeless. Yet their spears were very real.

Alexander limped a step backward from the diorama and chants a spell, focusing on keeping the dolls off of him. The magical field of force quickly coming into place with a slight flash of light and then fading as the energy field fell snuggly into place around him. Meanwhile Nulyth had spotted the strange dolls as they begin to swarm around Alexander and he rushed forward in a charge, slashing at the nearest doll. The paladin's scimitar flashes in the magical light as it cuts through the air toward the doll; however, Nulyth was not prepared for the small size of the creatures and his attack is thrown off! Scimitar smashing into the floor where only a doll had been moments ago.

The first of the three warrior dolls leaps at Holbrecht, catching him off guard he managed to jerk one leg away but he winced in pain as the tiny spear flashed and drove into his shin. The other two leap after their original target of Alexander. As they leap at him Alexander strikes one with his sword cane but the blow does not penetrate the hardness of the wood the creature is made of . The two strike at Alexander in unison and the two spears flash and drive into his calves and feet, small trails of blood left in their wake as gashes a few inches in length began to cover his legs.

Round 1 Results
With as close as the things had gotten so suddenly, and the injuries that Holbrecht had suffered because of it, there were two things Holbrecht realized he needed to do right away. He dropped his sling, as it would do him no good in such close quarters, and then he drew his warhammer. Next he backpedaled a bit and released a burst of positive energy as he griped his holy symbol. The burst went out with a flash of light encompassing all that was nearby. Holbrecht tried to grasp in his mind exactly the magics that caused these things to be brought to life but under the current stress he couldn't recall any weaknesses or even what their proper name was.

Only a few feet in height, the puppets were barely half the stature of a halfling or gnome making them difficult targets to fight against. Curved blade awhir, Nulyth shifted doing a deadly dance with the animated statues that were attacking Alexander. Slashing downward at the closest one and this time making contact. Yet the nature of the of the dolls, and indeed what they were made of, turned what would have been a felling blow into a minor wounding one, a small chip of wood flying free of its form. A normal foe might cry out in pain and fall to the ground as blood began to flow, but these dolls showed no such hesitation or feeling.

Neferteri on the other hand had an almost instant recall of what the creatures were as he began to rattle off to the others, "Warrior Dolls, Animated objects, Tiny construct, darkvision, low-light vision, although not very good eyesight, no hearing. about as tough as a armored breastplate, fast, not much tougher than a normal commoner to defeat if you could get past the hardeness of their material, immune to death effects, disease, mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects), necromancy effects, paralysis, poison, sleep, stun. Not subject to nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain. Not at risk of death from massive damage. Might be susceptible to grappling attacks." then it clicked in Nefer's head, he had found a weakness in his foe. "They are vulnerable to Fire!" the halfling screamed in excitement.

Kachu rushed forward to assist. scampering up to attack the one that Holbrecht moved away from just a second ago. Slashing at the doll with a claw to swipe it away. The claw scrapping across the hard exterior of the doll but not even leaving a scratch in its wake. Fairing little better Lin threw a magical orb of acid toward the creature and watched it leap into the air and avoid it as it sizzled into the side wall of the tomb just below a funeral mask. Meanwhile around the corner gasping with pain, Alexander stepped back to give the holy warrior room, and sweeps his blade at the little horrors again, trying to knock at least one of them down and off of him but unfortunately the animated toys were just to fast. At that moment the dancing lights spell put up a minute ago when Neferteri entered the first chamber fizzled out. Luckily where Lin was now standing at the edge of the masked hall her light spell kept the illumination good to the back of the Trophy Room.

The first of the dolls that Nulyth had nicked with his scimitar a moment ago leaped in the Paladin's direction, it left the doll vulnerable and Nulyth slashed downwards with his scimitar and bit into nothing but the solid stone floor of the crypt, the doll having leaped free of the blow and preparing to launch itself back at the Paladin. Though the Paladin paid for his attempt, as the doll he faced jabbed with its spear, point piercing his armor and causing a small stream of blood to run down his abdomen from where it had pierced.

The second doll again leaped toward Alexander. Alexander swatted at it again trying to fend it off but it was almost pointless as the creature was a blur of activity. The tiny spear struck Alexander multiple lashes this time in the abdomen and on the upper thigh, blood spurting from each gash as the tiny surgical incisions were made with deadly accuracy.

The third doll continued toward Holbrecht leaping at him once again. Holbrecht instinctively slammed his warhammer down hard but came up short as the blow landed in the sandy floor of the tomb. It was all Holbrecht could do to keep the doll from scoring another blow, close combat not his expertise and use limited in such close confines. Weaving and dodging as best the dwarf could but could not manage to fend off both of the dolls quick attacks, this time the tiny spear catching him directly on the shin cutting and gashing against the bone.

Unlike fighting a living thing, or even something imbued with the energies of undeath, these automatons didn't show any sign of mirth or fear when their attacks landed or missed, faces painted on their wooden bodies and unnerving in their complete lack of life.

Given his options are limited, Holbrecht just tries to stand his ground and offer more healing to the others. It is minimal in this situation, but he can't do much more unless he also survives. Once again tapping into the positive energies, he channels to try and help the others. As soon as he does, he takes a chance and tries to move out of the way of the cone Alexander is talking about.

This covers Hebrecht, Nulyth and Neferteri only.

Holbrecht again grasp his holy symbol and channels his deities positive energy outward in a burst around him, The light pulse from it reaching everything around but weaker than the one a few moments before. Holbrecht then went to move to a safe distance but the warrior doll struck at his heels one last time but the blow did not penetrate his armored foot.

Given that his last attack barely knocked the doll, Nulyth makes savage backhanded, downward slash in an attempt to destroy the minuscule warrior doll! But again the doll showed its quickness as it darted between his legs and the blow again struck the ground missing the tiny menace. Nulyth then shifted to get out of the wizards way.

Neferteri seeing Holbrecht pull back from the hall retreated and took up a position on the stairs with his morning star in his hand.

What would it take to stop the animated horrors before them, it was like something that small children might have a nightmare about, their toys coming to life. But this was no toy or game, these horrors were real and they had to find a way to stop them and do it quickly.

Round 2 Results (Final)
This covers Alexander, Lin Zi and Kachu only.

Lin snaps her fingers and gasps with effort as she dismisses Kachu; running into the other room she tries to draw some attention from Alexander and Nuylth.

Alexander meanwhile unleashes a firey burst upon two of the dolls searing them as the wood they are made of turns black.

The first warrior doll again leaps at Nulyth but he was ready for the leap and Nulyth slashes through the air with his scimitar only to barely miss the creature by only mere inches. Nulyth managed to fend the little doll off for the time being, though he had the feeling that slashing and cutting at the dolls was doing them little good, their thick and hardened wooden bodies difficult to cut through when the things were moving about.

The second doll continued its assault on the old wizard, Alexander side stepped a quick jab from the tiny spear but wasn't so lucky on the second blow. The second blow came in a unsuspecting slice toward the tendon on Alexander's left ankle, the spear tip jabbing and twisting into its mark.

The third doll continued chasing after Holbrecht, the cleric instinctively smashes at in with his warhammer but again the mighty warhammer just pounded into the ground missing its target. The tiny doll leaps into the air jabbing for Holbrecht's chest area, both jabs of the spear connecting in rapid succession. Holbrecht falls to the ground with the doll on top of him, blood pouring from his wounds.

Holbrecht has taken a beating this fight, and is a step shy of falling to this little construct. "I've done what I can, and I'm at the end of my resources." He apologizes, before stepping away from the thing and healing himself. "Nefer, Alexander's been using fire, you said it was a weakness. I've been carrying an alchemist's fire for you, use it on the fantastic little bugger." With that he drops the conjoined packs he's been carrying at Nefer's feet.

What is it with these horrible rolls?!?! I would try to grapple with the little things, but of course I'd draw on AoO with my attempt. Plus knowing the rolls we've been getting I'd miss my attempt, draw an AoO (which will hit...) and then I'll get tagged two more times...

Nulyth attempts to slash at the brutal doll, but once again... his attack cuts through nothing but air as the doll ducks his weapon. He chances a glance back at Holbrecht and notices the dwarf barely on his feet. "Everyone fall back to the next room and close the doors! I will try to keep these two in here until you can make your escape!" He shifts back a step to start blocking up the hallway...

Ugh... yeah I didn't think about that... Looking back at the map that's going to be pretty much impossible. You know, Paizo had a great idea with the Combat Maneuvers, except for the AoO's that come with them unless you burn two feats just to avoid AoO. I hate that fact.

Tiny creatures do got get AoO unless they are in your square and you leave it more than 5 foot without using the withdrawal full round action. Alexander would provoke for leaving the square with the one that is on him but would not provoke from passing the dolls.

Round 3 Results (Final)
This covers Neferteri, Kachu, Lin Zi, Alexander and the Warrior Dolls.

Neferteri springs into action, retrieving an alchemist fire from his pouch and lobbing it at the third warrior doll in front of Holbrecht. The alchemist fire flask arcs over Holbrechts head and lands directly atop the tiny warrior doll cracking open and bursting into flames. The tiny doll is quickly consumed and crumples and chars like a burning piece of kindling. Unfortunately the flaming splash from the flask splatters burning fluid onto Holbrecht's arms as he quickly pats the flames out as they blister his flesh.

Lin Zi focuses on the little dolls tormenting her comrades. "Edan Li, Hound of the House, I call for your blessing!" Smoke bursts up next to her and from it erupts a Chongqing dog with brown-red fur that attempts to tear the doll worrying Alexander to pieces. The dog however misses with its attack as the doll again shows its speed. Following Nulyth's order she steps back into the other room.

Desperate, Alexander draws on the thread of power running through his sword cane and uses it to drag a spell out of the aether -- a spell he cast only moments ago: "Nimbus ignis!" Again, a cone of flames roars out, this time only to strike the doll attacking Alexander himself, since the alternative would be to shoot Lin in the back... The second doll dodges Alexander's spray of fire but the flames remain close enough to finish searing the wood as the doll falls over not to move again, all magics that were animating it completely gone. With a wrench and a tug, Alexander makes a break for the next room.

The remaining doll, emotionless and without fear again leaps toward Nulyth. This time however Nulyth was poised, it had happened to many times. He had watched the dolls and learned their attack style and this time he would not miss. Slicing through the air with his Scimitar he cleaved the tiny doll into two halves while it was yet in the air, both halves crashing to the floor sliding to a stop against the wall.

And just like that the tiny dolls were no more. The combat was over. However the battle had left its mark on the room, The horse T bracket of the chariot was now completely in ruin, however the chariot itself was unharmed by the fiery explosion that had left its blackened mark upon the floor and the ornate chest in the southwest corner had some minor marks from the splash of the fire. The smell of burning wood fills both chambers now.

Breathing hard more from the excitement than any exertion on his part Neferteri advises Let us gather what we can of value and depart from this place. We are wiser now and need to better equip ourselves, tend our wounds and restore our magics.

Male Dwarf Cloistered Cleric of Brigh 1 (AC: 16 [T: 12 /F: 14] +4 vs. Giants; CMD 13 [+4 w/Stability]; HP: 8/8; F+2, R+2, W+5 [+2 vs Poison, Spells, and Spell-like]; Init: +2; Perc: +3 [+4 more w/Stonecunning, +2 more for Ancient Osirion C or S doors])

As the battle comes to a close, Holbrecht is relieved and sighs heavily. When he takes stock of the room and ensures everyone is still standing, he notices the damage to both the chariot and the chest, "Oh, no!... No, no, no!.... This isn't good,... what can I do?... I have Brigh's blessing... yes... I'll try that... is must do something to help." He busies himself with the chest, and then the T-bar or the chariot, casting the same spell over and over.

Once he is satisfied that either it will not work, or he has done all he can to repair them, he gathers his backpack, and Nefer's. Then he makes his way over to the one uncharred figurine and scoops both halves of it up. He stows it in his stuff to study later.

Mechanics:
He will cast Mending repeatedly on the damaged objects, in hopes of restoring them. I don't think it would work, but it's worth a try.
Then, he will move to where Nulyth killed the last one (not sure which square), and collect both halves.

Holbrecht gathers up his backpack and the small pack of Neferteri's, he then calls out for his gods assistance and a pale blue light engulfs his hands as he starts slowly methodically passing his hands over the damage on the ornate chest, careful to not come near the contents. As he works the damaged burn spots on the chest flake off and the chest is restored to its original state. Once completed he turns his attention to the T-Bar of the chariot but parts of it are completely burned away and he knows the magic will do little good. Again appraising the chariot that is left he believes now if the chariot was to somehow be brought to the surface it would only be worth 75 gold pieces unless magic was used make whole to restore it to working order, if that was the case then they could probably get 150 gold pieces out of it.

With his work done Holbrecht moved to the other room and collected the pieces of the doll that Nulyth had split asunder. Lin Zi's summoned dog vanished from existence in a puff of smoke, Alexander renewed his dancing lights spell as appropriate and everyone got a few minutes to catch their breath and regroup as Holbrecht worked.

Nulyth lets out a sigh of relief as they finally take the fight out of the horrible dolls. "I hate to retreat so early in the day, but I agree that most of you need to rest and soothe your wounds. Perhaps this be a learning lesson for us... Again I do ask to allow me to clear a room of threats before we charge in." He glances over to Alexander for a moment.

He will offer to carry whatever he physically can out of the tomb before they leave. "Perhaps we should open these chests first, before we take our leave of the tomb? We may be able to fill them with some of these books and masks?"

The group pauses momentairily to take stock of both rooms contents, the ornate chest worth 200gp and weighs 25 pounds that was previously opened in square DD still holds the three vials, two of which are a clear waterery liquid and the other is a smooth darkk orange liquid, the chest also still holds the two books with thin, gold-plated metal sheets for pages. each book weighs 25 pounds and is worth 300gp

The diarama has not been inspected or appraised, however Alexander did detect magic from it. There are five unopened and unchecked chest that are sealed with wax in the room with the diorama, there is also a weapons rack on the southern wall and a shield rack on the eastern wall, Alexander detected a magic aura around on of the shields earlier. A unopened wax sealed urn sits in front of the weapons rack as well.

The four mask have been inspected but not gathered up yet. Each mask is gold-plated and worth 75 gp.

OOC:

You can either use perception to identify the three potions by touch taste and smell or by using spellcraft and examining them. Spellcraft will be required for the shield and the diorama to identify.
