My build (an alchemist with a slight flaw in her character) is coming along.

![]() |

Probably gonna actually go the Rogue route. Trapfinding and Disable Device should be boss, and Rhodes just feals much more roguey to me. I don't know if I'll do an archetype yet. I don't typically use archetypes.
Should have my character ready in the next few days, though.

Sylvia Pari |

I was wondering about some of the alchemist class skills. Why Disable Device? There's only so much they can do without being a rogue. Are there other alchemical things for them to 'disable'?
I should go read up on alchemists, I guess. They are an odd, odd class.

Alastríona Eichmann |

There's a lot of Rogue overlap in the Alchemist. Especially once you get into archetypes that give you stuff like sneak attack and trapfinding.
That said, I can't speak for CH but in my games DD is the go-to skill for really any kind of mechanical equipment (along with Knowledge: Engineering). So an Alchemist who knows his/her way around a laboratory or engineer's table would be using DD on most of that stuff, along with appropriate Knowledges and Crafts.
----
I believe I'm done and ready to go.

Sylvia Pari |

Yeah, I see a lot of overlap, but sneak attack damage doesn't apply to splash weapons, does it? Plus, multiclassing would drop the BAB significantly, so I don't see much point in doing that. But alchemist can't disarm magical traps... it's odd. I'll be glad to have a rogue in the party who can do real roguey things.

Rhodes Rhomaino |

Stats mostly done. Still need to finish up spending gold on items and completing the backstory. Need more time at the library to do so. Only had 55 minutes to work on it today. Will think more on what else to spend my remainder on at home and will have the character completed tomorrow morning or afternoon likely.

Sylvia Pari |

Backstory done, stats corrected, still equipping. I should be ready by the time we're a go!
Oh, and my pic is no longer an Orthos twin.
I figure 'studded leather' for an alchemist is probably a metal-reinforced leather duster and pants, stained by various chemicals.

:-k I wonder how jousting works in PF. As a Lance has reach, it'll hit before the Horse does. Thus does the horse attack, or do you need Ride-by-attack? (Or does the rider delay until he's within reach and then attack - then the mount completes it's movement & attacks?)
Or should I wait until the mount gets a +6 and go for Lunge?
Anyway Jerry is nearly done.... sort of.
Although I'm seriously thinking of a Lion Mounted Beast-Master.
At 4th level, a Medium beast rider can also choose an allosaurus, ankylosaurus, arsinoitherium, aurochs, bison, brachiosaurus, elephant, glyptodon, hippopotamus, lion, mastodon, megaloceros, giant snapping turtle, tiger, triceratops, or tyrannosaurus as his mount.
However none of these are Large according to the AC stats?

Sylvia Pari |

Puffin and I are pretty much done. We will be able to hit the library daily (usually twice) to read and post, so we'll have no delay on that end. We may have August 2/3 out of pocket as we drive to Colorado and get set up there, but will have full access after that.
I have to finish equipment but that's all. Gods, I hate shopping.

Caladrel Inthesial |

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Caladrel Inthesial. As you can tell from my appearance I am an elf. Click on the avatar for the crunch. Still working on the back story, but it is coming along well. Also, I plan to spend a great deal of time wild shaped. I was thinking of creating a second avatar that I can use to post and show stats when I am in my wild shaped form. Most of the time that form will be an eagle at this level.

I think they scale up to large once you reach a certain level.

Yeah, looking at it precisely - it seems like they might scale up at Level 7.
However why does the archetype allow you to take any of them @ level 4 - if you cannot actually take them until level 7? (as it does say that you cannot take a mount until you can actually ride it.)
Anyway, apologies for the questions. Just trying to ensure Jerry won't be a hindrance to the party mechanically.

Orthos |

I'm honestly not sure. Might be a question for the appropriate forum. My knee-jerk guess would be that since the archetype specifies they're allowed at that level, they're assumed to already be sized-up. But that's not really clear from the text, so it's hard to say.

I recommend posing that in a rules forum and let me know what responses you get.
If you were wondering, however, dinosaurs will be a no-go for this campaign. There are other animals on that list that are viable, though. Is that the direction you are thinking of going?

I believe he said Lion a few posts up >_>

That he did. My bad!
The lion will certainly draw attention, and will probably startle some of the gentlefolk who are accustomed to seeing such creatures safely in the zoological gardens, but it certainly works.
The SRD lists lions as large, so that should resolve the size issue, should it not?

On the charge/lance question, I did some checking on the rules and on threads where people have asked that question previously.
The rules indicate (and the forums tend to agree) that if you have a reach weapon but your mount does not have reach, you must choose one or the other at the end of a charge. In other words, you can end the charge 10' from the target and attack with the lance or 5' from the target so the mount can attack, but not both. Ride-by attack circumvents that limitation nicely.

Yep, lion or tiger. In keeping with a Safari/Tarzan-esque theme. Of course if it's not suitable then that's fine. I was thinking that Jerry rescued the lion from a carnival, or some travelling circus. Certainly it'll draw fear in towns, but might have at least a glimmer of acceptance from his chums that think him 'eccentric'.
Jerry still needs to sort out his 3rd feat, and buy some equipment. Though Mounted Combat & ride-by-attack might be essential (or Lunge for the mount at higher levels) - this can easily work as Cleave looks not to work on a charge.

Sylvia Pari |

My build is complete and so is Puffin's. He wants a better backstory and I need to complete my equipment, but the crunch is done and we're both ready to go.

Sylvia Pari |

OK, Mr. GM, sir, I was going to buy some alchemical items and thought it silly because, y'know, I'm an alchemist and all. Can I make a few creation rolls/gold spends in this thread to make my own stuff?

Luce the Beast |

ROAR! (this is Jerry's lion.)
He rescued her from a travelling circus/zoo run by tinkers. Upon seeing her sorry state, he nursed her back to health - feeding her on deer on his fathers' estate. She sleeps in a lean-to stables next to the chimney breast in one of the out-buildings. (seems that old Jerry has a thing for helping distressed ladies)
Anyway they are both now done, I believe. Jerry still has some money to spend, but being a fiscally responsible chap is saving up.
Luces HP: 4d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 5) + 4 = 23

But not so much for distressed ladies of the family Cervidae. I imagine being eaten by a lion would be distressing. :P

I've been getting acquainted with crafting rules and alchemical items and may I just say... yikes!.
First, for crafting days, Sylvia brews up a nice elixir of crafter's fortune to add a +5 bonus, and uses her +2 lab. All bonuses stack because Paizo jiggered things that way. With the spell, she ends up with a +22 check.
Craft(alchemy): 4 (ranks for 4 levels) + 4 (INT bonus) + 3(for class skill) + 4 (competence bonus for alc class level, class feature) + 2 (circumstance - lab) +5 (luck - crafter's fortune) = 22.
I created a spreadsheet with costs and DC's and everything so I can put in the rolls here and spit out the crafting time. CH, I'd be happy to put it somewhere you can see it if you want to check.
Alc grease, cost 1.67, DC 15: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (13) + 22 = 35(success, 6 hours)
Vermin repellent, cost 1.67, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (11) + 22 = 33(success, 4.25 hours)
Armor ointment, 10 gp, DC 15: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (16) + 22 = 38 (success, almost 4 days)
Alchemical glue, 6.67 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (12) + 22 = 34(success, 2 days)
Alchemical solvent, 6.67 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (19) + 22 = 41 (success, 2 days)
Smoke pellet, 8.33 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (20) + 22 = 42 (success, 2 days)
Tindertwig, 0.33 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (20) + 22 = 42(success, <1 hour)
Weapon blanch (silver), 1.67 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (20) + 22 = 42 (success, 3+ days)
Weapon blanch (adamantine), 33.33 gp, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (10) + 22 = 32 (success, 1 week)
Bloodblock, 8.33 gp, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (3) + 22 = 25 (success, 3 days)
Sunrod, 0.67 gp, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (15) + 22 = 37 (Success, <2 days)
Acid, 3.33 gp, DC 15: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (9) + 22 = 31 (success, <2 days)
Alchemist's fire, 6.67 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (8) + 22 = 30(success, 2-1/2 days)
Shard gel, 8.33 gp, DC 20: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (4) + 22 = 26(success, 3-1/2 days)
Pellet grenade (iron), 16.67, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (8) + 22 = 30(success, 5 days)
Bottled lightning, 13.33 gp, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (16) + 22 = 38(Success, 3 days)
Tanglefoot bag, 16.67, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (11) + 22 = 33(success, 4-1/4 days)
Thunderstone, 10 gp, DC 25: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (12) + 22 = 34(success, 2-1/2 days)
Banshee ballerina firework, 25 gp, DC 30: Craft(alchemy): 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (18) + 22 = 40 (success, 5 days)
Anybody interested in checking over the math is welcome to do so. @_@

That was probably more complicated than it needed to be. The crafting duration is irrelevant since you have as much time as you need, and I would be okay with taking 10 on any of those checks at this stage. (In-game, if time is an issue, taking 10 may not be an option, but during character creation, I would allow it.)
All the same... Kudos for learning those rules!

Sylvia Pari |

It was a good exercise, though it turns out for those that didn't match their sp cost, I'd need a roll for a second week. *sigh* Still and all, there are tons of fun alchemical stuff and I can make almost anything during breaks, if we get 'em.
I updated the spreadsheet to create the stuff in the spoilers above, including the die roll text string, so I can copy/paste what I want.
I admit it. I love Excel.

I can do that, and I'll give you a 33% discount off standard retail pricing! The alchemical items have really been expanded from the basic tindertwig/alchemist's fire.
I even made a grenade!
HAHAHAHAHA!

Okay, I am going to get moving.
Caladrel and Smitty, could you send me a brief blurb about your backstory via PM or put it in a spoiler in your profile? It can be formatted however you like, but I'd like to know more about your backgrounds.
Rhodes, could you expand yours a bit, same as above? I am piecing together that you are a bit of a scoundrel and most likely from the city, but I could use a little more.
Since your backgrounds are likely to be revealed gradually, I will get started anyway and you can fill that stuff in when you have time.
The other 3 look pretty solid at this point.
I did not proofread everyone's stats, but at a glance I did not notice anything glaring.
