Between my rounds,

Kajetan looks round wide eyed for some one not involved in combat that could maybe help him out, seeing that everyone else is busy, he tries his best to avoid becoming rat food.

Heading water-skiing tomorrow so will be out for a couple of days. Mothman, feel free to act for Laithe - he will do his best to help Kajetan out if he remains threatened. Otherwise he will make haste up one of the ladders and take the easiest route to one of the snipers. Assuming you don't spring any major surprises on us in the next round or so...

Alright, I’m going to assume that Alton and Keildrithe delay till after the bad guys.

The remaining rats surge forward, hissing and biting.

The rat at B7 bites Laithe for 2 points of damge. Roll a Fort save.
The rat at E6 bites Kajetan for 3 points of damage. Roll a Fort save.
The rat at E7 moves to F5 (no AOO from Kajetan who does not have a melee weapon in hand) and misses Nicolai.
The rat at I5 misses Alton and the rat at J5 moves to I6 and misses Alton.

Up on the walkway, the nearest rat-man discards his bow, draws a thin sword and attempts to strike at Pharris across the corner of the walkway, a strike turned aside by the woman’s chainmail. moves from D11 to C11 upper.

The one at the far side of the walkway likewise discards its bow, draws a blade and runs around the other side of the walkway, seeking to flank Pharris. Double move to D5 upper.

The third creature fires again at Alton, striking the halfling a glancing blow for 1 point of damage.

The entire group is up now.

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Sorry for the delay folks, it's been a brutal week with very long working hours... what can I say, year end reports to funders, Board meetings... yeehaw, what fun... not...

DM Mothman wrote:

A rat snaps at Kajetan as he loads his crossbow; it misses, but the oversized teeth are enough to unnerve the wizard, and his bolt goes wide.

Back in the other chamber, the kobolds hiss and chatter amongst themselves, before Raspit hurls a barrage of questions at Keildrithe: “What’s in there? Why did you come back? What’s that smell? Why do you look green? Where are the devils?”

Keildrithe hugs the wall, sweating bullets and dry heaving. "That... smell..." He gags and nearly vomits as he attempts to answer Raspit's question, then shoos the kobold off with a wave. "Ne-ne nevermind... Stay here and hide... behind... urgh... some clothes racks and you... should... urgh... be fine. Don't... go in there... urgh... until we say so..."

Feeling ashamed for having momentarily deserted his companions, the green-tinged Karand takes a deep breath, draws his sword, steps gingerly past the acid puddle, and attempts a vain stab at the rat that threatens Nicolai. The awful odour in the room overwhelms him yet again and he instead vomits on it, splashing Nicolai in the process...

Attack: 9 + 2 - 2 (sickened) + 1 (inspire courage) = 10. Should now be standing in G4... but not in the puddle! Now back to work... :-(

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Murmuring a thankful prayer to the spirits, Pharris steps up into the corner and slashes at the one ahead.

The cloak swirls behind as the greatsword cuts in towards the creatures left leg.

Attack roll=11, Damage=3 (inc bard song and sickened)

She looks around to see if the other door is about to spill out more opponents.

Kajetan lets out a howl of pain as the rat's foul yellowed teeth sink into him, despite it's small size he can feel the power of it's muscles, this thing is stronger than me. The panic is starting to rise in side him, but he is secretly a little relieved that one rat heads towards Nicolai and saves him from facing two.

Fort Save after nasty rat bite. (1d20+1=15)

Invisible castle is being kind to me again. Current AC 11, HP 4, but wow am I a liability in combat?

Heh, yeah, casters rock! BUT Melee + Caster = 'Squishy' ;P

Nicholai, still grinning from seeing the effects of his flame burst, lowers his arm and ducks back behind the Urn. His smile quickly fades as he realizes that the only thing that saved him from having a rat chewing on his femur was the lucky timing of his turn and good heavy boots!

"Easy fella, nice critter, maybe we can find you a nice bone to chew on? Besides the one in my leg?! Hey Keildrithe, a little help here!" He says, making 'shoo-shoo' motions with his hands while his eyes dart about frantically looking for an escape.

Keildrithe obligingly leaps back in to assist Nicholai and Kajetan, but his coughing prevents him from skewering the tiny hissing beast.

"Thanks." Nicholai mutters wryly as his eyes continue to dart about, taking in the activity on the catwalk as best he can before looking back to his new feral friend. In spite of the seriousness of the situation, a smirk creeps back onto his face.

"More roast rodent, coming right up!"

Waiting on my turn, Can you confirm please Mothman, There are only 3 rats left? 1 on Alton, 1 on Kajetan, 1 on me flanked by Keildrithe, any more?

Nicolai Auf derMaur wrote:

I have it as 5 rats, 1 fighting Laithe (B7), 1 fighting me (e6), 1 fighting you (f5) (Keidrithe is not flanking it as he is technically beside you in the door way, Alton is facing two of them (i5 and i6).

The Exchange

I agree with Kajetan for what it is worth.

AH! ACK! Got it, thx, completely missed those others! Will try to re-draw my map tonite. Have to go and pretend to work now.

Sorry for the confusion guys; we’re not standing on ceremony (or initiative order) at the moment, so if you haven’t taken your turn this round (Kajetan, Nicolai, Laithe, Alton), feel free to do so now, in any order.

Kajetan has it right.

Kajetan will scuttle away from the rat facing him and attempt to climb the ladder, this will draw an attack of opportunity against AC11, HP4. Assuming you don't drop me to 0HP or below he will intone words of magic, wave a feather around and throw tiny tarts at the ratman nearest (the one in D5 upper). thus casting Hideous Laughter on him, will save DC-15 to resist.

Just realised I am missing a feat for being human, I will correct that tomorrow.

The rat that Keildrithe attacks darts nimbly away from the bard’s unsteady blade (and appears none the worse for being splashed with vomit).

Up on the walkway, Pharris swings her greatsword down and around, trying to cut her opponent’s legs out from under him; but in her sickened state she does not take into account the handrail. Her sword cuts through a section of it, but the flimsy timber slows her blade enough for the rat-man to jump aside.

Kajetan panics and breaks away from combat, but the rat bites painfully into his calf as he goes for 2 points of damage plus make another fortitude save. Adrenaline pumping through him, he hardly notices the wound, but scrambles up the ladder, already mouthing the words of his spell as he goes. The rat-man (well, rat woman actually by the look of things) that is his target suddenly collapses onto the walkway, rolling about in pitches of hideous, high pitched, uncontrollable laughter. In fact, she is laughing so hard that she rolls right under the handrail and off the walkway, falling with a loud splash into the vat of filthy water below D6.

Sorry ADMAE, I keep rolling really well when the rats attack you (a 19 in that case). On the plus side (for you) I rolled a 1 on the spell saving throw, so gave you a bit of extra bang for your buck there.

Still got Alton, Nicolai and Laithe this round.

Result! I am glad for that one, or I could of been in real trouble. It is fun playing a wimp.

Alton kicks, trying to get the rat to back off as he finishes climbing the support. Getting his balance on the catwalk, he moves towards the nearest archer, drawing his blades and grinning almost menacingly "Lets dance my dance now."

Sorry for my absence; I was visiting some friends. Also, my spacebar is dying, so apologies in advance for any run-together words that I missed.

Sorry, trying to reconstruct my map. (It seems I forgot to save it the other night) trying to see if I can 5' shift to a safe casting distance, and safely flame burst some more rodents. If not then I'll havta MM a couple instead so I dont hit us!

Sorry for the delay! BAck soon! (I hope!)

Okies, can I get new positions for everyone? Trying to make a map.
If I'm reading mine right, I'm pretty much surrounded, I can take a 5' step, but that won't take me anywhere except next to another rat! When I figure out where I/everyone is, I'll cast and quit delaying everybody!

EDIT-cast defensively, Burning Hands on the rats at E6 & F5.

Concentration check: 1d20+6=18

Nicholai, realizing that he has nowhere to go, attempts to stare down the rodent licking it's chops at his leg, while he very slowly reaches out with both hands, and clenches his fingers around air. Once more the space inside his fingers begins to glow a sullen red. Smiling at the rat(s), he says casually, "Fuego!" as he thrusts out his hands. And another sheet of flames rolls over the two rats closest to him and Keildrithe.

Burning Hands Dmg: 3d4=8

The flames briefly light up the dim, odorous room. Granting him a brief, clear glimpse of his companions who have successfully made it to the rickety catwalk before plunging once more into gloomy half-light.

"You play with fire, you get burned. You play with ME, you get roasted!" He spits, still smiling, at the two hopefully! blackened rodents.

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

I believe that I should still be standing in G4, in the doorway.

Alton kicks at the nearest rat, then scampers the rest of the way up the column Climb: 17+3 = 20. The rats snap at him, but both fail to catch the nimble halfling as he climbs away.

Nicolai unleashes another gout of flame, this one at the two rats that harass himself and Keildrithe. The creatures catch the full brunt of the flame, and fall about, dead or dying. The stench of charred flesh and burnt fur threatens almost to overwhelm the foul chemical smell in the air. Rats at F5 and E6 down.

NPCing Laithe: The wolf tears into another rat, flinging it’s broken body aside and darting around between the vats to seek more targets. Laithe takes down rat at B7 and moves to H7.

The knockers stay where they are for now.

Round 4:
The Bad Guys: 17 (Ratmen at C11 and I11 on upper level and D6 (in vat). Rats at I5, I6)
Alton: 16 (L5 upper level)
Keildrithe: 16 (G4)
Nicolai: 16 (G5)
Pharris: 12 (B10 upper level)
Laithe: 11 (H7)
Kajetan: 7 (B5 upper level)
The Kobolds: 6 (E4)

The rat-man facing Pharris attempts to strike at her again, but again misses. His companion fires across the walkway at Alton, and his arrow hits the halfling in the shoulder for 3 points of damage, before he stows his bow, preparing for close combat.

The two remaining rats on the ground flee back through the door they entered the chamber by Laithe gets an AOO on one of them, with a 20% miss chance for the shadowy conditions.

Pharris, all the doors from the walkway remain closed.

The group is up, in no particular order.

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

"Phah!" Keildrithe puts his hand over his mouth and nose, wiping away some bile and trying to block the stench of the burnt rats and the sickly odour of the chamber. He steps past Nicolai, unsteadily, and makes his way to the edge of the vat in which the ratman fell, wanting to make sure that it is indeed dead. He keeps his sword at the ready, hoping for the best, but anticipating the worst... and trying to hold on to what little is left in his stomach...

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Pharris strikes down hard, her blade slashing at the lycanthrope's neck.

Attack roll 2+5=7, Damage=4pts. (sickened and bard song included)

As the ratman steps away from the blow, she takes a moment to spit out the gunk in her mouth.

Keildrithe, the murky grey water in the vat, its surface thick with soap-scum, roils and splashes – it looks like something is alive and moving down there, though you can’t make out much.

Pharris, still unsteady with the fumes, misses her attack. She’ll be back to normal next round.

Everyone else left to go this round.

Go to Map template. Sorry no people on it, but it Mothman's list above makes that easy. Prints out best in Portrait.

Kajetan grows in confidence now no one, or no thing is threatening him directly. He scuttles up behind Pharris (B9) and casts Daze on the rat man in C11, Will save DC-13. If that ratman is dead before he gets there, he will reload his crossbow.

The wererat facing Pharris seems to succumb to Kajetan’s spell, standing somewhat limply with a glazed expression on his whiskery face.

Male Human - Karandic Druid/4

Retrospective: Fort save vs rat bite 9 + 5 + 1 = 15 (might also get some extra from the potion quaffed before the fight? AOO vs fleeing rat 4 + 4 + 1 = 9.

Laithe snaps but misses the back of the fleeing rat, and rather than giving chase, stops and takes a quick look around. Seeing no remaining rats he looks towards the balcony and decides he would be of best use trying to get inbetween the two ratmen above. He quickly wills himself back into human form and leaps for the nearest support beam, attempting to climb to the walkway above.

If the walkway that sticks out into the centre of the room has support beams, Laithe will begin climbing immediately onto that (to upper G8). Otherwise he will move closer to the wall, attempting to climb up to Upper G11, F11 or E11 - whichever one is more doable. Climb check 16 + 1 = 17.

I missed the centre walkway off the above map.

Yes, you can climb up at G8. That climb check enables you to make it.

I'm assuming that would be a full round action? If not, Laithe will then move to H11

I'm here, waiting on resolution to above actions to see where I'd be the most useful! At this point I'm thinking about lighting up a coin and tossing it up so they can all see better.

Nicholai takes a final look at his fiery handiwork and sniffs in approval. He immediately regrets it. Breathing thru his mouth to minimize the impact of the caustic cleaners and burning rat hair on his sense of smell, he looks around the room for other dangers. Seeing three of his companions are now on the walkway, he glances at his crossbow, still lying next to the Urn where he placed it, and back up,...

You can make it to H11.

Alton and Nicolai.

Glancing back up, Nicholai squints, then hisses, shaking his head in annoyance.

"Too dark, I'd perforate Pharris, or one of the others." He swiftly adds as an afterthought.

"Keep an eye out?" He asks Keildrithe as he glances with a brief, worried look at the direction the rats left. He deftly plucks a coin from his vest pocket and lifts it to eye level. He lifts an eyebrow as his other hand also raises to head level. He cups his hand toward the coin and whispers a few syllables in a hissing tongue. In response his cupped palm fills with warm, golden light, which then flows towards and into the coin.

Blinking to clear his vision from the sudden light, he lowers the now torch-bright coin and flips it up high into the air. Another pointing, commanding gesture, like commanding a recalcitrant dog, and the coin hangs in mid air, slowly spinning in place as it sheds its warm radiance across the room.

"NOW let's see you hide fang face!" He mutters towards the balcony as he reaches for his crossbow,...

OK, I cast Light on the coin, then used my already active Prestidigitation to keep it hanging in midair. Since I didn't move or anything I'm hoping I can do that all in one round? And now we don't have a 20% miss chance,... of course now we have firing into melee,... ;P

Nicolai, yes, I’ll allow it. It’s probably stretching the 20 foot radius of bright light just a fraction, but it looks like you can just about catch both ratmen left on the walkway in the light.

Nicolai casts his illumination spell on a coin, which he then flicks upwards and causes to move slowly across the room, bathing most of the southern portion of the upper walkway in bright light. No miss chance on the ratmen up there in their current positions.

DMNPCing Alton: Alton races around the catwalk to flank the rat-man that Laithe faces. Double move to J11.

The trio of kobolds move cautiously up to the doorway and peer into the chamber, wrinkling their scaly snouts.

Round 5:
The Bad Guys: 17 (Ratmen at C11 and I11 on upper level and D6 (in vat).)
Alton: 16 (J11 upper level)
Keildrithe: 16 (E5?)
Nicolai: 16 (G5)
Pharris: 12 (B10 upper level)
Laithe: 11 (H11 upper level)
Kajetan: 7 (B9 upper level)
The Kobolds: 6 (F4, G4)

Pharris is no longer sickened. This is the last round that the group is effected by Keildrithe’s bardic music.

The two rat-men up on the balcony fight desperately, knowing they are all but surrounded, attacking not only with their thin blades, but also trying to bite their opponents with the long crooked incisors in their muzzled mouths, but neither is able to connect against Pharris or Laithe (respectively).

The water in the vat next to Keildrithe continues to swish around violently – presumably the rat-woman within is still alive and still under the effect of Kajetan’s magic. There is no further sign of the fled rats.

Our intrepid heroes, post as you will.

Male Human - Karandic Druid/4

Obviously a touch out of order, however...

As Laithe closes in on the Ratman, he dives forward, changing into wolf form as he goes, and causing his opponent's desperate attacks to swing through the air over his back. Landing on all-fours, he then pounces up at the creature, snapping powerfully at it and hoping his fangs do more damage than on their last encounter.

To hit 16 + 5 + 1 (inspire courage) + 2 (flanking) = 24, To Damage 5 + 3 + 1 = 8

Male Human (Karandic) Bard 4 / Ranger 1

Still somewhat unstable and nauseous, Keildrithe readies to strike the moment the rat woman should attempt to rise from the vat.

Yes, standing in E5, readying attack. If the rat woman should stand, attack = 11 + 2 + 1 - 2 = 12; I'll guess that's a miss.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

As the worst of the nausea leaves Pharris, she cuts down again at the desperate ratman with renewed vigor.

Attack roll = 21, Damage=7pts

"Surrender or die at my blade!" The greatsword is poised for its killer blow back over her head, pointing forwards at the ratman's face. On the balls of her feet, the woman tries to manifest strength and power.

Intimidate=7.

While below, Keildrithe holds his blade ready to attack anything that should emerge from the tub, Laithe and Pharris both attack their respective opponents up on the catwalk.

Laithe easily gets in under the rat-man’s guard, distracted as he is by Alton coming up fast behind him. The wolf’s powerful jaws crunch through the leather armour and close around the creature’s thigh … but again meet that strange resistance, as though biting into dense wood. Laithe feels blood in his mouth, and the creature cries out in pain, but the wound does not appear as bad as it should.

Pharris likewise easily strikes her dazed opponent, but again the blade does not seem to bite as deeply as it should. At her ultimatum, the rat thing screeches and spits, showing no sign of surrender.

Alton, Kajetan and Nicolai in no particular order.

Kajetan loads up his crossbow and takes aim on the rat person Pharris is fighting.

Crossbow bolt at the ratman fighting Pharris, 1d20-6 (+1 dex, +1 base attack, -4 firing into melee, -4 cover?) (1d20-6=-5, 1d8=8)

Twang! Something goes terribly wrong with the shot and Kajetan squints through closed eyes in fear of what it is.

A natural 1, for a total of minus 5 (or minus 1 if it has no cover from Pharris or the railing), have fun with that.

Of the catwalk critters, which one has been 'hit' more? (even if its DR doesn't let it show) OH, Nevermind, in the pace of combat I really wouldn't be able to tell unless I was watching the entire time. I REEELY don't want to fire into melee with a crossbow! I'm as likely to hit friend as foe!

Nicholai starts to bend over, reaching for his crossbow, and then hesitates. Uncertainty clouds his features as his eyes quickly flick from Pharris, to Laithe and Alton, trying to see if any are seriously hurt.

"Blast it!" He mutters, barely loud enough for Keildrithe to hear, forgetting momentarily that Laithe, Alton and Keildrithe can hear him plainly thru the message spell.

"I was saving my energies for the Imps, but I'm not that good a shot!" He mutters.

He reaches out to the side with both arms, the fingers of both hands closing once more around nothing, which begins to glow a shining blue-white in response. He takes a half step, and thrusts his arms forward. The brilliant blue gleams launch from each hand, arcing across each others path as they travel upwards to unerringly strike a ratman each.

Cast MM (2 bolts), 1 for each ratman. I'll let the DM (randomly?) assign which took which dmg.

1d4+1=2, 1d4+1=5

Kajetan attempts to fire his crossbow, but there is an ominous sounding ~twang~clunk~ and the bolt appears to jam in the mechanism. He’ll probably need to reload it before trying to fire again.

Nicolai’s magical missiles sweep towards their separate targets, one striking the rather burly looking rat-man fighting Pharris, the other scoring a glancing blow on the slightly weedier humanoid between Laithe and Alton.

Alton is up.

DM Mothman wrote:

Very kind of you, I was bracing my self for a shot in the back of Pharris or a fall off the walkway.

Female Sylvan Elf of Olidammara

Lucky Mothman's the DM. I'd have made a player roll again, on a 5 or less bad things happen.

Pharris' concentration tightens into focus and she waits for the creatures next action.

"I am the blade, the blade is death, I am death," she murmurs.

Kajetan Armann wrote:

Very kind of you, I was bracing my self for a shot in the back of Pharris or a fall off the walkway.

Nah, seems kind of unfair to spring a serious consequence critical fumble on you now when I haven’t used them in the game prior to this. The crossbow will probably take a move action to remove the stuck bolt and another to reload, that’s penalty enough.

So as not to hold up the fight, I’m going to DMNPC Alton again this round:

Alton furiously attacks the rat-man with his rapier-sickle combination. Both blades hit, but where the sickle seems to slide of the things skin with no effect, the rapier digs in – not a kill-strike to the heart as Alton had thought it might be, but deep enough to draw blood. The creature shrieks in frustration, pain or fear.

Alton confirmed a critical with the rapier there.

Round 6:
The Bad Guys: 17 (Ratmen at C11 and I11 on upper level and D6 (in vat).)
Alton: 16 (J11 upper level)
Keildrithe: 16 (E5?)
Nicolai: 16 (G5)
Pharris: 12 (B10 upper level)
Laithe: 11 (H11 upper level)
Kajetan: 7 (B9 upper level)
The Kobolds: 6 (F4, G4)

Keildrithe is no longer sickened, and bardic music effect has expired.

The dirty water in the vat beside Keildrithe erupts as a bedraggled and half drowned human looking woman bursts upwards, gasping for air. As she does so, Keildrithe swings his longsword at her, but the blade is turned by her wet leather armour.

The two rat-men up on the walkway attack furiously, aware they’re fighting for their lives, and in both cases their re-doubled efforts are to some effect; although both fail to bite their opponents, Pharris is struck by her enemy’s blade for 3 points of damage, as is Laithe for 4 points of damage.

Our heroes. Keildrithe, I’ll count your strike as an AOO rather than a readied action as such, which means you get another turn this round.

EDIT: by the way, the one that Laithe and Alton are on is looking very badly wounded and desperate now.

Sorry folks; school got into gear and so my schedule's a little hectic this week.
I believe its my turn, yes?

Alton grins savagely in triumph as his rapier digs into the rat-man's chest. Wrenching his blade free, he jabs forward again with the bloodied weapon, simultaneously making a poorly aimed sweeping blow with his sickle.

Atk (rapier) 30 (possible crit); Dmg 5. Atk (sickle) 9 (nat. 1); Dmg 7 Crit confirmation roll 16; Dmg 4 Forgot the +2 flanking bonus and bard song in those rolls; retroactively added.

Alton again stabs the wererat, who gurgles and slumps to the walkway. His features twitch, then twist and change, until he appears human … and dead, or close to it.

Kajetan spends this round trying to fix his crossbow, cursing under his breath the whole time.
