A group of seasoned adventures were sent to Tian Xia on a mission of great importance for the Pathfinder Society.. As they were wrapping up that mission they came across a skeleton of a man.. Among the man's possessions was a satchel containing a diary.. The man's name was Tan Dae Gun and after further reading you all discover he was a prize fighter of some renown, well according to him anyways, and that somehow had met an untimely demise here in the wilds.. Skimming through the diary that last page stands out to you all..
"The Ruby Phoenix, Hao Jin, is certainly dead. Why else would the collection that so dominated her life—the greatest assembly of wonders Golarion has ever known—be made a prize for the winner of the fighting tournament that now bears her name? I weep at the thought of the Ruby Phoenix in a perpetual state of ash, but from her demise will rise a champion of as much renown as she earned in life, and with his chosen prize, he shall continue her legacy. I will be that champion!" But it was not to be, for he did not win..
Among the rest of his things you all find an entry ticket for the next Tournament held once every 10 years.. This is that year, and the Ruby Phoenix's treasure hoard is said to be the largest in the known world.. A chance at a selection from that hoard is to much for yall to pass up..
Having dominated one of the qualifying tournaments your band sets off to Xieland Island, setting for the tournament.. Your mode of transportation , a packed fishing boat full of contestants, spectators, and residents of the island.. Excitement stirs through the crowd and you all meet many new people..
This is where ill give yall a chance to do some Diplomacy/Know(local) to find out more information on the tournament..
GM Pox |
Well you'll certainly have a chance to do that, but fishermen? That's gonna give bad rep for the Society..
Belsiard the Wanderer |
Belsiard wakes up with a start…I feel like I used to be a Bard…disgusting thought that…
hope I am not the only one reusing a profile :)
After sharpening his 5 daggers and putting them about his person, Belsiard goes straight to a pub looking to see what the scuttlebutt is on this tournament, and particularly see what he can learn about the competition.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 diplo
GM Pox |
Well atm you guys are on a ship sailing towards the island.. You have several hours till you reach port though.. Ill use that dip roll for info on the boat though..
30th decennial games in 7201 ic (4701 ar), marking
300 years of the tradition. To honor the occasion,
instead of the traditional 64 entrants, an extra round of
competition was added, bringing the total number of
competing teams to a record 128.
In the last Ruby Phoenix Tournament, a sorceress
from Lingshen was disqualified just prior to the final
round for cheating. She swore vengeance upon her
competitor, the de facto victor Marthysan the Righteous.
While some believe she may strike soon, the event
happened a decade ago, and many believe the sorceress
has forgotten about the perceived slight or moved on.
More than 30 of the 128 entrants in the thirtieth
tournament perished in unrelated accidents, or exhibition
combats not covered by the tournament’s strictures on
ethics, honor, and safety. More than half of these deaths
were attributed to the dragon Huyanwo, whose defeat
has long been the ambition of Ruby Phoenix contestants
hoping to make a name for themselves outside the arena.
DC 30: The 7201 tournament’s legacy was further
clouded by a surprising number of gambling-related
murders in Goka, attributed to a spike in organized
criminal activities surrounding the games. Some believe
the Golden League, one of the most influential criminal
organizations in Tian Xia, has its sights set on ensuring
this year’s tournament provides it even higher returns
on its gambling books.
You all may make these checks when you have off time and when a significant NPC is met, in which ill notify you all to roll..
GM Pox |
As some of yall talk to other contestants, villagers on past tournaments a young woman approaches your group.. She wears typical Goka fisherman clothing and has the standard conical hat.. Once removed however you all she is obviously Avistani, with auburn hair and sharp chellish features.. She carries a large pack across her back.. "So you guys are going to enter in the tournament? How exciting! My names Risha and this is the first year I've been able to afford to come and see the festivities! So tell me, where are you guys from? Yall look handy with those big swords.."
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
You get the feeling she has an ulterior motive.. Perhaps she is attempting to gather information on the groups origins and combat techniques..
Belsiard the Wanderer |
got ya…then i go boozing on the ship!!
Do we count as one entrant or 4? Belsiard ponders aloud to anyone who will listen
Seventh |
Whoa whoa gameplay!
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
K.Local: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 Useless...
Do you see now why do I like Int?
Seventh knows one thing for sure: everything in this tournament was dangerous. Information was the first step to victory, and oh, he would not handle what he knew. This was not the time to make friends, this was the time to gain prestige!
"We're from many places miss. Each of us has come from a different place, to try our luck at the tournament. Pretty standard. What about you? You're alone on this one?"
Kuras Narvel |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (4) + 19 = 23
Kuras nods at the woman completely willing to speak to her, but a cat suddenly appears over his shoulder yawning.
Marius Bergan |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
The cat suddenly bites Kuras on the neck, and begins to roll about on the ground waiting for a belly rub.
Kuras now swearing begins to rub the cat's belly with a resigned look on his face.
GM Pox |
She smiles, showing pearly white teeth.. Do fishermen keep care of their teeth? Hmm.. "Well i bet your very good with your little sword as well hahah.. Me? Oh no no, I'm no contestant, just here to watch and enjoy the festivities.. Oh by the way would your group like to purchase a map of the island? I have a spare one if your interested.." Before waiting your response she starts digging in her pcokets.. Seemingly unable to find what she was looking for she stammers.. "Well its seem I've lost my extra.. Excuse my gentlemen I must go look for it.." She takes another good look at the group and their gear, almost sizing you up before turning and sleeking away..
The rest of the boat ride is uneventful and a few hours latter you arrive at New Habor, as you all arrive, townsfolk shower you with cherry
blossoms and hand out ceramic cups filled with warm, pungent liquor. The crowd forms a reception that leads to the center of town, where a crowded noodle house, Yon Loi’s, serves as the hub of all activity in
New Harbor. The noodle house is a large, open-air structure centered around a courtyard filled with long, shaded tables for commoners. Smaller round tables fill a roofed balcony surrounding the courtyard, from which wealthier patrons and the tournament elite may look over
the establishment. The kitchen sits on the ground floor, behind a short partition. The townsfolk help in seating and serving the newly arriving contestants. Each receives a complimentary bowl of salty noodle soup containing fish and vegetables.
As the air clears you all notice many small competitions already breaking out among the many contestants here.. Arm wrestling competitions along with feats of flexibility, and stamina are going on around the noodle house.. There is a number of gamblers placing money on these small competitions, leaving no doubt that this whole tournament is a huge betting pool.. Feel free to join in if you like just let me know.. On betting or competing..
As you all set there an obvious Avistani man approaches your table and introduces himself as Marthysan the Righteous, Paladin of Iomedae, and the last tournaments champion.. He has heard a group of pathfinders had swept a preliminary and wanted to meet them himself.. He makes it quite obvious he wishes your group to win the competition and offer his assistance over the next 5 days anyway he can, including information on past competitions etc..
Bug Eater |
"Arm, wrestling, bah, that's for you silly civilized folks. Why limit things to an arm? Back with us Shoanti we take these things seriously. We do try to not kill each other, but that's about it. "
GM Pox |
Ok Marthysan basically will tell you all of the above information on years past, so i dunno why there's even dcs for it.. Feel free to read the sopilers on the history of the tourney..
Belsiard you see a couple of contestants wagering gold on high kicks and tranversing the low bar.. They will allow you to join in with a bet of 10gp.. This is a pure dex check.. Best total out of 3 attempts wins, round down..

Bug, at your words a human monk looking fellow approaches you.. "You talk big.. Care to test yourself against me in a wreslting match?"
You all see this peeks the intrest of the crowd and a placed is clear out front of the noodle house in anticipation of a brawl..
You notice a odd creature on the overlook of the noodle house.. It seems interested in the match.. From the flowering robes you would guess that it is female..
This is a Kuwa Oni.. An evil spirit.. You may know more depending on what you rolled..
Belsiard the Wanderer |
Belsiard puts down his 10 gp and goes to town
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 perception
GM Pox |
Clearly impressed by your display the 3 men pay up and offer to buy to a drink at the bar.. They ask questions about your technique and training regime to achieve such flexibility..
To Bug: "I do not do "Arm Wrestling", thats for children.. My name is Chung Po.. When you are ready you may meet me outside.. Non-Lethal only yes? I do not wish to hurt anyone seriously before such a huge competition..."
He heads outside to the prepared spot and people start placing bete like mad men..
I was hoping i didnt have to run this grapple guy.. Never have before so i might have to be corrected on some stuff..
Init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Once in the ring he assumes what appears to be the snapping turtle position..
Bug Eater |
"Yeah, no point in getting anyone killed before we get killed in the arena to please the crowds. "
init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
right before they begin he will use martial maneuvers to add improved grapple, deperate battler, and greater grapple
This will add +5 to his CMB and CMD against grapple.
Bug will activate crane style, fight defensively, move in and grapple the target.
grapple: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (14) + 19 = 33
AC is now 28, CMD to grapple should be 39
Seventh |
Whoa whoa, this is going to be easy for you.
Perception: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (9) + 18 = 27
[ dice=K.Planes]1d20+Not possible[/dice]
Seventh gets distracted with the paladin's conversation and watching the weird fellow in the back rows, so much as to not realize Bug Eater was really going to accept the challenge. "F*~@! Excuse me Marthysan, I gotta watch for someone's life." The warpriest moves to carefully watch the wrestling from a position where he can see the odd creature.
Gamblers, Enemies, Bandits and a dragon, all trying to kill you... We really should have had a nice conversation to avoid this kind of dangers... Oh Bug Eater...
Will we be able to rest tonight or is there a fight scheduled fr today?
Belsiard the Wanderer |
Belsiard pockets the coin and cheerfully accepts the offer for drinks, he then tells them
Double or nothing on the wrestling match. I will lay it all on my companion there.
he says watching the match over his ale.
GM Pox |
As you approach him.. "Ah.. Crane Style! Very Nice" Almost certain Crane style only applies to melee attacks that would otherwise hit you, and not to combat manuevers..
You move in and a move that would have grabbed most people he simply avoids.. He counters in his own grapple attempt
Greater Grapple: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (3) + 22 = 25
If im not mistaken you dont do damage the first round of a grapple..
There are no sceduled fights today.. Btw the Paladin paid in full for yalls lodging and food at the noodle house, which has an adjacent building with living quarters..
The men are quick to take the bet.. "Ive never seen Chung Po defeated in a wrestling match, Double or nothing it is.." Not a moment later the two men are toe to toe putting to use their grappling techniques..
Had to edit because you cant make more than 1 grapple a round.. Well unless your a certain archetype that he isnt.. He can make 2 if he has you already grappled however.. Regardless you both have high cmds vs grapple so this might take a while..
Kuras Narvel |
Perception: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (6) + 28 = 34
Kuras points out the small creature to his cat, and whispers to it.
"Go meet that woman and make a friend, or see if she wants to have a drink."
Kuras then sets Richard down on the ground, and goes closer to observe the match.
"GO GET HIM BUG!"
Marius Bergan |
Richard quietly slips away from the room, and goes around the back of the building. Once there he will fly to the top of the building, and go around to the creature speaking to it.
Stealth to not be noticed leaving: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (8) + 19 = 27
Btw Richard has Tounges, and speak with animals on constantly.
"Hello there friend. Care to join the rest of us on the ground? It's not particularly safe up here, and you could get a drink down there."
Bug Eater |
You are correct, no damage when just grappling. Ok, well he's where I wanted him anyway, so time to administer a beatdown.
non lethal
to hit: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30 damage: 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
to hit: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32 damage: 1d10 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
to hit: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 miss most likely
to hit: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 miss most likely
BTW he just lost his dex bonus to AC since he's grappled.
GM Pox |
The creature turns with black teeth glistening and speaks to the cat.. "I do not partake in mortal food and drink, but thank you.. Now I wish to be alone Sir Cat.. Tell your master that if your group participates in the extra events you will see me again there.. I judge them.." And with that she turns around and continues to watch the grappling contest..
GM Pox |
The tien takes the two punches and grits his teeth.. "I thought this was a wrestling match.. Dishonorable I see.." There's talk among the crowd and more bettings are made..
Are those bonuses including twfing, crane style and power attack penalties?

Yes, I'm running hero lab and it's doing all the math, but I didn't power attack, it it would have been +17 damage
"Dishonorable? You made one condition chum, non lethal. I'm following your condition. You want rules, you better specify them in advance. "
GM Pox |
"I figured a Wrestling Match would be self explanatory, as would a boxing match etc.. No matter you will lose regardless.." And the crowd erupts in cheers..
lol im rather having fun with this online dming.. I hope im not doing terrible so far.. Ive tried to be as explanatory as possible.. If i need improvement in any areas yall please fell free to let me know..
Belsiard the Wanderer |
Belsiard attempts too increase the bet another 10 gp to each (I win I get another 60 gp, I lose I lose 40
Marius Bergan |
Richard rolls about on the roof, and looks over at the woman.
"So do you sell information as well? I would personally like to know more about that Avistani woman who met us on the boat, if you had any information about her. Of course I would expect you to name your price before speaking."
Richard gauges the woman as she responds to his question.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30
GM Pox |
After seeing there man take a beating the men's excitedness reduces a bit, but in the end believe the tien's word.. "Sounds good.."
The Creature cranes it head around unnaturally at the cat.. "I am an Ancient Spirit bound to judge this competiton and to keep everything fair.. Now I would suggest you leave me be or I'll remove your team for bribing a judge! Am i clear little one? Now be off!" "Dishonorable indeed.. Ill have to keep an eye on these guys.. Could be Golden League Thugs.." She stairs holes in Richard as he hopefully retreats..
There is no bluff in her voice..
Marius Bergan |
Richard turns around without a word, and jumps down to the back alley of the building. Rushing back through the room he climbs up onto Kuras, and whispers what he has learned.
GM Pox |
I dunno why the module put the oni there.. It specifically says she turns down questions about other competitors, so why even have her there.. Interesting turn though lol.. Been in town for 5 mins and a judge and a whole crowd are looking at yall differently lol.. Good thing im not messing with all this combat performance bs..
