A Tale of the River Kingdoms

Game Master ZetaGilgamesh

Chapter 2. Shadows on Glass

Set in the River Kingdoms

15 point buy
Standard Races
Standard and Advanced Classes
2 Traits (with approval and appropriate backstory inclusion)
No Evil Alignments (LE may be approved, but I am going to make you a subordinate of another PC)
Level 1
Average Starting Gold (per Starting Character Wealth Table)
No starting magic items, no starting masterwork items(unless per trait)

Post submitted characters on Paizo and please use the following template: Demo template. I recommend copying the template into a document program, editing and then posting it as a character on Paizo.

This will be at least a single adventure. Depending on how well this runs, I will probably roll the characters into one of the campaigns, so the better you are at keeping up with posting, the more likely we will continue.

Be disciplined. Treat this like a journal. You don’t have to post an epic tome every day, but I expect you to post something every day, even if it is just a couple of sentences.

I promise to keep you informed as to any changes in my personal status, but as I have a steady 8-4:30 job, I expect little problem with posting on a regular basis. If I go on a temporary duty to an offsite location…well that is why Paizo sells the books as PDFs.

I expect the same courtesy from you to the other players: keep us informed and always attempt to find a way to post.

The Exchange

Dotting. I wish to apply. I will put something together and submit it.

I have a gnome cavalier that I ginned up for a Kingmaker campaign, but didn't get to use her. I already have her as one of my profiles, but she will need to be set to 15 point buy and set to your formatting. So I will post her here when I get that done. Likely tomorrow, as I have a RL pathfinder game to DM tonight.

I am interested in this game may want to play a ranger.

I would also like to join. I've not played pbp, but have loved D&D since the mid 90s.

I will get a character together by tomorrow.

Liberty's Edge

I believe I will be submitting something as well tonight, probably a summoner just because I haven't played one yet and have been wanting to, otherwise a more fighter-type since that is out of my norm.

A couple of quick questions though:

Can we get a little more information about the adventure you have in mind? Would it be better if our characters were local and somehow are connected with or at least know a faction or can they be from anywhere? Is there a specific region in the kingdoms it is set in?

Are you looking for the stats of a character, the background, or both? I think the answer to the above questions would do a lot to help for an interesting background to be made, otherwise certain parts will be left more generic so they can fit into the story.

Finally, do you prefer a more combat heavy or RP focused game as DM?

Count me in if ya have a spot, brother. I am working up a halfling bard.

Would a bard or a rogue work better for the game you have planned? I have both, but will post the prefered class for your game. It appears to be a combat heavy group of folks that are interested so the rogue or bard can be skill focused also. I like the rogue for the River Kingdoms as it is that kind of place. Let me know so I can create the backstory.

Is guide archetype from the APG is okay right.

The first adventure will be essentially regionless. You will begin the adventure hitching a ride on a wagon from Artume to the riverside docks at Gralton. You can be local or not. The good thing about the River Kingdoms is that anyone can have a good reason to be there. Chelaxians are about the only group that would actively face trouble in all parts of the Kingdoms due to the local take on slavery.

You need the stats to play, but it is the background that will determine if you are selected to join.

As for combat vs. RP: the honest answer is that there will be pure combat encounters for folks to enjoy, as well as complex encounters that can be tackled as creatively as you wish. The more interesting the solution, the more fun I get to have. I firmly believe that there should be at least opportunities for every player to play their character.

I would like to avoid adding the archetypes at this point. Some of them are more limiting than really helpful, and I do not want to be approving or disapproving each individual archetype. Please stick to the basic core and advanced classes.

I don't know what the mix is going to be. I would prefer that folks have options for most situations. Making a one-dimensional character will inevitably mean that you sit on the sidelines at least half the time. Make what you want, if there needs to be a tweak because the party lacks social graces, I will make the suggestion later.

I will make a rogue for this game then; I have him all worked up stat wise. I will get the story taken care of today.

I humbly submit Mathieu Rordene. Cleric of Pharasma, healer and herbalist. (Can also be the face of the party if need be.)

I did find that with a 15 point buy, things don't come as easy as the 20 point buy that I'm used to. I did take a subdomain from the APG, Thought. If this is not okay, I will change it. Thanks for the consideration.

The Eastern Mysteries trait is a regional trait of Qadira. Your background has nothing in it to account for this. I would suggest choosing a Chelaxian regional trait, as it appears that is a major component of your backstory.

I would suggest the Theoretical Magician (Cheliax) trait as a replacement. It gives a +2 bonus on Spellcraft checks.

Have you ever found you've lost something important to you due to the act of another? Well friend, today is your lucky day. the name's Seamus Fleetfoot, repo man extraodrinaire. Now it 'ill cost ya to get back what ya lost, but I never leave my customers disappointed. So you say it's a person what's been taken from ya? Then that is a different story. Kidnappin' is something that has never set right with me and my fee will be covered by those which done ya wrong. You can take comfort in the fact I'm on the job and what was yours will be again.

Thanks ZetaG, that fits. Is it from the Cheliax Companion? Do you know if there's a compilation of traits and sources anywhere?

Yes I do have the Chelaxian supplement. In answer to your question: there is a decent compilation site out there that can be used, but I urge the purchase of the supplements to get the essential flavor of the regions and their associated traits: Nethys

A stunningly tall viking woman approaches, brushing the mud from her cloak. Her long golden hair is tucked back in a tight braid. A battleaxe and flail are tucked into her belt, and she carries a steel shield. Despite her haggard looking equipment, she exhibits an air of excitement. She tugs absentmindedly at holy symbol of Torag that dangles from a chain around her neck.

Seamus, you need to redo your stats, they aren't correct for a 15 point build. To get an 18, you would have to have 2 "9"s and all other stats at "10".

The anatomist trait is geared for university students, undertaker/morticians and necromancers. If you want to make an alteration saying that you worked with an undertaker and your interaction with the bereaved family members led to your current profession, that might work.

Something along the lines of "you kept hearing of all the problems from the family members of your "clients": thugs, hoodlums, crooked lawmen and con-artists who targeted the family in their time of grief. It made you realize that there was an opportunity to help people...while helping yourself a bit too. So you became a returner."

The thought domain is fine. The cleric sub-domains don't alter/focus the characters as badly as the archetypes do.

I am ready to hunt.

This is Meowzebub's gnome cavalier. She is ready to go with a full profile.

Her traits are Deft Dodger and Poverty Stricken from having lived on her own in the forest from a young age.

If selected, I will add the stats for her wolf mount, Thistledown.

I will make the corrections to the story and see what was up with the math on the Stat block. Hero Lab may have steered me wrong, lol.

Edit: I just checked the math an it was right. Str +2=10, Dex +10 build points =16 + 2 racial =18, Int +2=12 and Cha +1 BP=11+2 racial=13. Grand total is still 15 BPs with no need to gimp a stat as far as I can tell. If I am wrong somehow, let me know. I was looking at the Core Rules Table in order to verify the math in Hero Lab and it worked out the same. It was the racial modifiers that made the stats look over built.

Seamus is a halfling with -2 str +2 dex +2 cha so those have modifiers on them his original stats were 12 16 10 12 10 11.
12-2=10
16+2=18
10+0=10
12+0=12
10+0=10
11+2=13
the 16 costs 10 points
the 12 cost 2 points but double since there are two of them
the 11 costs 1 point

10+2+2+1=15
That is the math for them it includes modifiers.

I updated the background inforamtion to be a bit more noble and to reflect the Intelligence stat and Anatomist trait. I like the working on the sly for the constabulary better than in it all for me approach. If there are any further issues, please let me know.

I stand corrected and I like the new background. We will get this party started shortly.

No problem. I think that the new background is more reflective of a hero and a good alignment than the previous one I had posted, too. Plus, it can open up room for quite a few NPCs and adventure hooks should this turn into a substantial campaign.

The lineup is:

Quillin
Seamus

A Tale of the River Kingdoms

Thank you all for making this recruitment so successful.

The first post is up. Let us begin.

Will there be a discussion thread for this as well? Just wondering.

Thank you for including me in this adventure.
