A Song of Ice and...Well, Actually, Just Ice: DM-Phil's Reign of Winter (Inactive)

Game Master Phillip0614

The time for Irrisen's new monarch has come and gone with no sign of the infamous Baba Yaga...and now, winter is encroaching onto all of Golarion! Will our heroes be able to find the fabled Witch-Queen and restore balance to the world?

Yikes. That does sound like something that would be a nightmare for any enemy. Dang tank pally.

My understanding is that maths wise (which isn't my main interest in the game anyway) it breaks down in the mid teens. You can have crazy HP and DR but basically the heights by which you can drive your AC are far more resource intensive compared to attack ability in the game as a whole and the theory is basically that things fall apart from there as far as "resource efficiency". It is easier to kill than to not be killed, it is claimed.

But I dont care about that. I totally want to make a dwarf that can't die. Then the alchemist or the druid can blow up or maul whatever we are fighting. That may not be the most "efficient" but I think it will be damn fun. I like the math elements of this game to a certain extent but its not why I play.

Amen to that! Sometimes it's enormously fun to be able to step out in front of everyone, hold out your hand as the giant swings an axe as big as you are at your head, only to have it glance harmlessly off of you.

...Imagining that situation, and how the laws of physics would deal with it, makes me smile.

Female Human(Iresseni/Taldan) Witch(Winter Witch Archetype) 1

I'm all in favour of Dwarven meat shield ..every witch should have one

Female Half-elf Alchemist (Chirurgeon/Vivisectionist) 1

I got to flip through the People of the North book yesterday my FLGS, and I think that the book itself is meant to be taken as the Player's Guide. Or at least the last few pages anyway. I don't know whether one will be released as a free DL. I mean, the 1st adventure is now out.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

yeah, and as I look over it again, it actually says "Reign of Winter Player's Guide". I wonder if those last 2 pages will be released as a free .pdf?? maybe a paizo blog??

Campaign Traits listed are:

Adaptive Magic- +1 Know (arcana) and UMD (now class skill)
Blood of Giants- +1 sunder and +1 CMD bull rush and overrun
Failed Winter Witch Apprentice- +1 Know (arcana) and Spellcraft, Skald or Hallit bonus language
Northern Ancestry- +1 Fort save and ER/2 cold
Restless Wayfarer- +1 Know (local and geography) chose 1 as class skill, bonus language
Vigilante Witch Hunter- +1 sense motive (now class), 1d4 hex nails
Warded against Witchery- +1 saves and spellcraft checks vs. evil arcane casters

Sovereign Court

Traits that boost my saves? Yes please!

Aaaand the official PG is now released! Things are gearing up to start! As soon as the PDF gets released when the book ships, I'm going to get us all started.

Having a hard time deciding on a trait for my Taldan Barbarian entry into whichever RoW game I try to enter...I guess either Blood of Giants or Northern Ancestry. What do y'all think? Character profile is here

Female Half-elf Alchemist (Chirurgeon/Vivisectionist) 1

I think I'm going to go with Warded against Witchery. My mother was from the north. A superstitious woman, she made sure to place wards against evil magic upon me as a child.

Also, regarding the redhead on the cover of the player's guide: Hubba hubba!

Sovereign Court

Updated. Took Northern Ancestry and Restless Wayfarer as my traits. Warded against Witchery was tempting but I like the static Fort bump and the wayfarer trait helps me with my notion that Trelck is actually a bit of a wanderer. Besides I wouldn't want my witch to feel like I didn't trust her, I mean there has to be a lot of trust bewtween a witch and her meat shield right? ;-)

I wish there was a way to view a game on the campaign page before we post in the IC thread. Are other folks having that same challenge?

Female Half-elf Alchemist (Chirurgeon/Vivisectionist) 1

You have to choose your traits from different types (e.g. Campaign, Combat, Social, etc...) unless DM-Phil rules otherwise.

The Exchange

Male Human Desk Monkey 2/ Logistics Guru 3/ Over-educated 2/Gamer 6

For some reason I always thought you had to choose two different ones unless they were campaign...Hmm. Not a problem, not a problem.

Meh, it doesn't bug me at all, Devon. If you've got a story reason for wanting Trelck to have two campaign traits, I'll allow it.

I like the idea of him being from a line of frost bitten, far flung "northern" dwarves, so there is a bit of going back to the ancestral clime there. Otherwise the resistance from that feat just fits his theme. For the other I picked it because ultimately I plan on playing him as "game to travel" which just seemed to fit the Wanderer trait.

Gameplay thread has been created!

Y'know what sucks? Having the flu. Having the flu sucks really bad.

Word. On that note my apologies for my absence, I have been having some health issues of mine own.

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

so we're waiting on Salvi and YYY...?

Sovereign Court

I wait for no...witch or half-elf....

Unless I have to to get my adventure started :p

Yup. Just like a couple of females, ain't it?

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Phil- mind if a switch my non-campaign to frostborn? it will likely get more use than animal affliction.

Don't mind at all, Wildir. We haven't gotten into any situation where that trait would be relevant, so it's fine.

Hey guys! I've been trying to compile all of your character information into a HeroLab file and, for various reasons, am having some problems getting some of your character information integrated into the program. I'm going to post here and ask each of your about the issues I am having, if there are any, so I can get this stuff fixed in HeroLab.

Please be patient with me as I'm trying to get this worked out. Thank you!

Wildir:
Wildir, you have Power Attack listed as a feat on your character sheet, which normally requires a BAB of +1. Is there some aspect of being a Bear Shaman (or something else about the build) that allows early qualification for Power Attack?

Drew:
What's your campaign trait? I'm assuming it's Restless Wayfarer, since you list Skald as a language, but even if that is the case, HeroLab still has you one language down from where you should be.

Trelck:
Which of your feats do you want to count as your 1st level bonus feat? I'm ok with allowing either, but HeroLab isn't recognizing Toughness or Steel Soul as a "Combat" feat, so I'm gonna have to finagle one of the configuration settings for Trelck's HeroLab file to get it to stop coughing back an error there.

Ykatarina:
No problems with you. Whew!

Salvianella:
No problems with you. Woohoo!

Sovereign Court

Phil:
Is Toughness not on that list? Whoops! That would be my bonus as conceived but I can take it later to keep me on the right side of things...

Trelck:
Nah, I'm not gonna be so anal about it that I'm not willing to give you Toughness as a bonus feat. I assumed it was a combat feat myself until I came across the problem. It's a simple enough fix! Dun worry 'bout it! With the way my number generator is rolling you'll need every extra HP you can get. :P

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Phil:

Looking over the character (I use Hero Lab as well) it looks like I am good for languages. I should get +1 for Intelligence, +1 for Linguistics and +1 for the trait Restless Wayfarer. I start with Halfling and common, then I added Skald, Tien and Minkaian. It looks good on my copy...do you want me to PM you a copy of my .por file for Drew?

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Phil:
DOH! my bad. Wildir's a retread PC that originally took Barbarian first level before switching to Druid. I dropped the level of Bbn, but didn't make sure my feats are kosher. I'll switch it out... if I live.

Wildir:
Gotcha! I'll let the first PA you scored on that zombie stand. I think y'all will need the extra damage assist. :P

Drew:
Ah! That's it. You don't have "Tien" listed on your character sheet under your known languages. That's where our discrepancy is. Got it fixed in my file now. Thanks!

EDIT: Restless Wayfarer also gives you a +1 bonus to Know(Geo) or Know(Local). Where would you like that extra point?

M Ulfen Bear Shaman

Phil:
Is it ok if I rejigger both my feats? I'm thinking Aspect of the Beast (retractable bear claws) and toughness. I'll just waive the bonus hp at the moment and still go down, but maybe i just auto stabilize. KOed by zombies. oh, the humanity of it!

Male Halfling Ninja/1

Dm-Phil:

I took it in Know-Geog.

Wildir:
Of course! Given the confusion about the Bbn/Drd thing, I don't blame you for wanting to. Rejigger away! I'll edit your HeroLab file as appropriate. You're thinking of "Aspect of the Beast - Claws of the Beast" for the feat, correct? Auto-stabilizing for now seems like a fine compromise to me. My apologies for not asking about this before the kerfuffle started!

Drew:
Done and done, sir!

Male Human

Medical status update for you guys: After consulting with an oncologist in Warner Robins, Georgia this morning, I have learned that I have either a grade 2 or grade 3 astrocytoma. It IS cancerous. It is NOT the really bad kind. The oncologist I spoke to told me I have already begun the process of scheduling an appointment at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas with a very experienced neurosurgeon there. I'll find out tomorrow morning when exactly my consultation appointment is but it's almost definitely going to be either next Tuesday or next Thursday and my surgery will likely follow within a couple days of that.

For at least a few days following the surgery, it's probably a safe assumption that I'll be incommunicado with everybody..which I hate, because I love you guys!

You take it easy Phil and get better...I'll miss seeing you here and at our other games. Best of luck!! You need anything just say the word!!

Well mixed news for sure but more good than bad I think. In an odd sychronicity I have another person in my life going through a similar situation (much more dire prognosis however. Anywho I'll root for you the whole way and like Daniel said if you think of anything let us know. In fact you should PM me an address. I still moonlight at a comic/game shop and a care package for just this sort of thing is in order if you have an interest ;-)

Glad-ish to hear it is not as bad as it could be though still scary. Houston has some great docs so you'll be in good hands.

and that is about the ONLY nice thing i'll say about Houston ; )

Male Human

Medical Update: I'm at MD Anderson in Houston going through new patient stuff today. Very busy schedule until early afternoon meeting with different specialists and getting the actual surgery scheduled for tomorrow. I should be able to post again tonight, but after that I'm not sure when I'll be able to post again.

They're telling me to expect a local recover of 7-10 days, but it's really all gonna depend on me, so expect me to be incommunicado for around a week or so, beginning tomorrow. Sorry for having to do this to you guys! As soon as I'm able to, I'll let you all know what's going on. My wife has told me she'll sign on for me tomorrow after the surgery is over to let you know how it went.

Best Wishes for a speedy recovery, PHILLIP! We'll be thinking of you.

Phillip is feeling fine... well, as fine as one can feel after an all-day brain operation. They think they removed over 95% percent of his tumor. We'll know for sure after he has a post-op MRI.

He's awake, talking, walking, about to get to eat something... Just letting everyone know he's okay like he asked me to do!

Hey gang! Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm back home, recovering from the surgery. Got some very good news from the neurooncologist. The mass that they found in my brain is a grade 2 astrocytoma, the lower grade it could've been. The neurosurgeon was able to remove (according to him) 95-98% of the tumor with the surgery, which my wife has already told you.

At present, because the tumor is grade 2 and the nature of grade 2 astrocytomas is that they are very slow-growing, I do not require any follow-up treatment in the form of radiation or chemotherapy. Moving forward, the treatment plan seems to be that I'm going to have to have an MRI done roughly every quarter to check and see if the tumor has started growing again. When it does, it is at that point that I'll need to seek out radiation/chemo or whatever. But for right now, I am hunky-dory!

Great news Phil...Glad it has worked out as well as it could be expected!!

Where are we with this? How are you doing Phil?

Phil's had a couple of minor problems resulting from the surgery..give him time I'm sure he'll be ok

well, i do have a back-up concept should Wildir end up as dragon chow. He does seem to be a damage magnet.

I'm not going out of my way to target Wildir, I promise.
