I thought it was 6 inches = hand. But, google says 4 inches to 1 hand. I figured Eothain would talk in hands, which is how horses heights are measured.

Unfortunately, there were only 4 horses to begin with and Eothain and Findegil had them all with Folc and Haleth. All the horses are gone.

By last light the party retraces Eothain and Findegil's steps eastward and emerge from the fog at the end of the marsh. It's almost too dark to see, and you venture a little closer, to within a few minutes walk from the base of the Hill, reckoning that, while Orcs do indeed see better in the dark than you, their vision is not without limits, and you can reasonably approach as dusk settles. The landscape is flat but gray, so that you can blend in as long as you move carefully, keeping low and staying in a line, with Amalina in the front.

The Tower of Dol Guldur disappears into the blackness of the sky. The Shadow is oppressive, pressing down on you like an oxen yoke. Your bodies are tired, though your senses are keen from heightened danger.

The train of excrement baearers has ended for the night, and you can see there is a small portcullis with a wooden guard station outside. You see two large orcs manning the post, but you cannot see inside from this vantage point. You would need to get closer.

Cereidh can confirm this is her "secret" entrance. Obviously, things were different half a millenium ago.

If you want to get closer, you will probably need stealth. Whatever you decide to do now, include appropriate rolls. You are up!

I must enter!

"I am not the quietest, but I will do my best to approach quietly as a rearguard. Regardless, we must prepare to swiftly slay orc sentries whether we are seen or not. I suggest that the quieter members of our group approach first and silence those watchers."

If no objections, Findegil will take a rearguard position:

Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Stealth, disadvantage from ring mail: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Thorgrim takes in the scene before him, noting the grand Secret entrance, and a plan comes to mind.

"Nay nay, pause for a moment, friends. I have a plan that may better suit us.

There are but few of us that can hide in the shadow of a leaf, and it takes, O, many sword blows to fell an orc before he should cry out. So let us not count on stealth! And instead feed to their strengths.

The hatred between Orc and Elf is well known," he says, indicating Cereidh, "so methinks that they would go far if they caught one unawares. And an elf maiden to boot!

So let us present them with what would appear the perfect gift: As those guards stand their watch, what if they heard the sounds of someone thrashing about in the darkness, and the words of an elf-girl trying to quietly call out to comrades that seem to have left her? If those orcs heard a comely elf saying 'Confound! Where are you, my fellow elves? I have been lost for some long time and you should come to my aid soon before I am found by some dirty, dumb orc!'

What then would they do?

They would grin at each other and advance, eager for fun and sport. They would NOT call out for aid, for but one elf girl is no match for two hulking warriors as they, and if they called for more orcs, they might be robbed of their fun! Who has ever met an orc that would rather share a thing that he thought was his alone?

Hence, they advance, with murder and rapine on their minds. And then the see fair Ceredih, lost and confused, and their hearts rise and they rush forward!

And that, my friends, is when we all of us rise from our positions and pounce upon them.

With luck, we will cut them down before they can call out. Though this might not be the best plan, it is one in which we have -ALL- of our blades in the mix, and not one of us must needs carry the burden alone.

What say you?"

Cereidh's eyebrows raise, and her expression seems torn between offense and amusement. "While I see the virtues of such a plan, and will not say that it is easy to underestimate an orc, does this bring us any closer to entering the Tower, or do we plan upon slaughtering every single servant of the enemy in silence before we simply waltz in?"

*heh* As a vault of useless knowledge, I think the term you are looking for is "span."

Thorgrim raises his hands in helplessness. "Once the guards are done in, many options can be availed. We know this is a servants' entrance, so we could grab a bucket and pretend to be servants. Who would notice a bent load-bearer who is already inside the walls?

Or we could allow you to blend with the shadows and stalk about inside, perhaps "re-claiming" clothes of a different sort for us to pantomime with?

The problem of the guards was put before me, and I hath answered, milady," he ends with a mock bow.

Amalina listens quietly to the various ideas, whittling away at a piece of wood to slow create a short pointy wooden 'dagger' that she eventually slips into her belt. She nods toward Thorgrim as the warrior lays out his plan.

"Thorgrim's idea seems the most workable to me. Much better to try to slip into the servants entrance using a little than scale a tall stone wall or fight our way through who knows how many of the enemy." She says. "It might even be possible to pass Winter off as a skinny warg." She adds with a chuckle as she ruffles the big dogs fur. Definition 7 of hands works as intended.

Éothain listens to the conversation and finally replies, "Aye, if Cereidh wants to act as bait, we can kill the orcs. We need to kill every servant of the Shadow who we encounter. They have no honor and deserve none."

My first post was apparently eaten.

Alright, good plan. Cereidh, go ahead and roleplay your actions, and roll Deception. If anyone else wants to explain where they are waiting, that would be great, otherwise I'll just assume somewhere nearby. Also, once the ruse is on, will you try to sneak attack the orcs, or just run at them?

In theory, we all hide within a circle of about a 30 foot radius, centered on Cere. That should be enough distance so that we don't need to bunch together, as well as give us a plethora of hiding options. Hence, once the trap is sprung, we just need to take a move action and then attack.

"Leave them," Thorgrim says, making a dismissive gesture. "You have the right of it. They'll no more fear thy weapons than you would a child with a butter knife.

Now let's be about it. They'll not kill themselves for all the difference it'll make."

Thorgrim crouches down and does his best impersonation of one trying to be stealthy. He has no great hope here, but so long as they do not shout bellowing warcries, it would take a skilled hunter indeed to discern a troop's strength based on naught but the song of the grass.

Cereidh looks about for a likely scrub-bush or mud puddle. Looks a little self-conscious, like someone playing at a game too young for them.

Starts to rattle the bush or tree, hissing slightly too loudly, "Thorgrim! Oh no, you left me to find firewood, but my maidenly hands cannot even skin this hare you left for our supper! Friends, you cannot have ranged so far afield, have you? How intemperate must I be to reach your fine elven ears and call you back to me? This truly is a foul wood!"

She continues in this vein until her companions fall upon an encroaching orc.

Paizo's dice-roller really let you down, eh? ;) In the interest of rewarding a good plan, I would probably have made any roll a success.

The party positioned itself within earshot of the two orc guards without arousing suspicion. They converse briefly in Orkish (and if any of you understands it you pick up that they are acknowledging the new batch of human slaves just arrived), but quickly resolve themselves into a disciplined routine, which is mostly just staring ahead into the darkness. Nevertheless, they appear to be both stout and spry, as it seems likely the Necromancer would not tolerate undisciplined or undersized servants.

A cool breeze blows fetid air from the west, but the smell of the excrement pile is not so easily diverted, which is lucky for you, or the Orcs would likely have picked up on your scent. Quietly, you reorient yourselves for the ambush.

Cereidh puts the plan into action. By the glow of torchlight sifting through the closed portcullis, you watch the orcs turn on her voice and quickly raise their spears. Then, they freeze, as if not knowing exactly what to make of it, but soon enough they stalk forward toward your trap, splitting wide to flank the source of the intrusion.

Orc 1 is within 30' of Cereidh, Amalina, and Eothain
Orc 2 is within 30' of Cereidh, Thorgrim, and Findegil

Éothain wipes the gore from and sheathes his blade. While Thorgrim picks their pockets, the red rider reviews their dress. Do they have a uniform cloak or tunic that could disguise them from a distance?

Éothain finds the orc armor is damaged but might still be useful as a disguise, if worn on appropriately large humanoids. They do not wear helmets, so unless you find another way to augment the ruse, your faces would obviously not be orcish, even at a distance.

Your first swing was a miss. These orcs were AC17.

"There's mud enough, for concealment," Cereidh suggests, wrinkling her nose at her own words.

And yes, Thorgrim, you find a single skeleton key on one of the orcs.

The ring demands much.

"Well done, Cereidh. Aye, it would."

Findegil kneels down and starts to apply the muck to his face and to take the shine off his equipment.

"Sure enough, I have a key here. That will come in handy.

And are we agreed then? This is the plan? Fin and Eothain will take on the mantle of orc guards, and the rest of us will be bent and bowed and following obediently in their tracks?"

Amalina nods along with the plan and begrudgingly begins to smear mud and muck on her face. Seeing her hesitation, Winter takes a certain joy in deciding to help her and everyone else while adding to his own disguise. The big hound turns the act into a game rolling around in the muck until thoroughly covered and then shaking hard enough to splatter the entire party. Thus giving the whole group that extra muckified look while at the same time turning himself into a muddy, bedraggled looking wolf.

Hey all, I've got day-long, offsite, work meetings over the next three days, so I may not be able to post much until Thursday.

I was really hoping you would use the excrement pile to add color. ;P

Findegil and Éothain remove the armor from the dead orcs and reassemble it over their own. It reeks foul, but the mud on your faces does mute to odor to a bearable degree. No extra AC but no penalty.

Thorgrim approaches the portcullis, finds the large keyhole, and with a satisfying click, the gate is unlocked and is then easily lifted.

The gate room beyond is lit by a single torch, enough to see that it hides no other immediate obstacle to entrance. A narrow affair, ten feet wide by sixty deep, two pairs of large double-doors lead east and west, but so do the wheel tracks of excrement wagons. If the visual clues weren't enough, the smell seeping through those sets of doors tells you exactly what you would find behind them.

At the end of the corridor, stairs lead up. Some thirty feet above, the corridor appears to be similarly dimly lit.

Cereidh, you recall that the cave-in was near the entrance, so you have never been further inside Dol Guldur than you are now.

Party order? I'm thinking: Findegil and Éothain (with Folc in his shadow) in the front row, then Amalina and Winter, and finally Ceriedh and Thorgrim. Please advise if different. How far back behind F&E will the rest of the party lurk?

Findegil bears the muck stoically as he moves in front with Eothain.

Cereidh will be willing to take the rear-guard with Thorgrim.

The party ascends the flight of stairs, pausing to peer down the corridor to see the area is not vacant, but far from active. The hallway continues to run north for another 120', and it is 20' wide. At the far end, another 10' wide stairway leads up out of sight. Flanking the far staiway on either side are barred iron doors which open in your direction.

Along either side of the corridor are wooden doors every 15 feet (8 doors on each wall). Most of the doors are closed except for the fifth one down on the right, where a pair of orcs similar looking to those you just killed exit and proceed toward the stairs. That door remains open.

I leave it to you, an experienced group of adventurers, to roll appropriately for all actions. If you forget to make a perception roll I will assume you are not actively listening and looking (which seems unlikely but we're not going to get bogged down on prompting for those kind of rolls), and I'll default to PP. Same for Stealth, etc. I expect you are not trying to make a lot of noise but that's different than being stealthy. You are up!

Cereidh glances questioningly at Thorgrim, and then at the orcs, although not promptingly.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
