I'm prepping for PaizoCon this week, so posting will be slim until next Monday. Is anyone else going to make it?

Just a suggestion here. Totally fine if people would rather not. But what do you guys think of assuming the default of Mandraiv's checking every door for traps, etc, and having the DM roll his check when there actually is one to see if we trigger it or not in the interest of streamlining the process of getting through this dungeon?

Just edited to obfuscate a bit, since I have not been announced yet.
It didn't happened at PaizoCon, strange enough, but came together after that.

So I have a confession to make: I misjudged this adventure. I thought it would be fun to do a retro-type dungeon crawl to try out the new D&D rules, but it's kinda turned into a long, slog with little point other than rolling dice. The original adventure had the obligatory final confrontation with Bargle, but it was boring even for 3.5. I had already changed it, deciding that Bargle had decided that he couldn't beat you guys, and had run off to his black dragon friend/mistress/boss. Even though I had fun watching your PCs interact, and interacting with them from time to time via monsters and NPCs, that has not been enough.
It would be a lot of work for me to rewrite this adventure to turn it into something interesting (from my perspective), time that I currently don't have, so I present a two options.
1) We simply call it a day and end this experiment/adventure.
2) We call this part of the adventure a day and move on to something else, perhaps continue past this dungeon to where you are tracking down Bargle and the dragon.
How does everyone else feel?

I quite like the group personally and would vote for option 2, but I must admit that it's gone very slowly for me - Ironically meaning that I'm struggling to remember to post at all. I'd like to keep playing with a one-post-per-day 'assumed minimum postcount' (not actually a rule, but at least an aim).
Because it went quiet, I've kind of found myself putting off replying to the game thread (on the grounds that it's going to sit still a while anyhow, or something - I'm not really sure....). I appreciate that by doing that I'm contributing to my own problem and predominantly leaving Mandraiv and Aredhel to do the heavy lifting in terms of driving the action along - well done and thanks for that you two, by the way. :)
I'll fully confess to being a PBP newbie - I'm finding one of the hardest thing is contributing when I dont really have anything to add. My default is to sit quietly, smiling and nodding - fine at the table but kind of tough on the rest of you to know I'm still there. :/

I like our group, and I enjoy your DMing style. I think we started out really strong rp-wise, but have slowly degenerated into a minimalist approach in order to get through the dungeon as quickly as possible.
As such, I vote for option #2.

Sounds like we have a near consensus. I'll wait for Oso to chime in and then will post a summarization of the rest of this part of the adventure!

Something that would greatly help me plan out our future endeavors, is if you could post something about your PCs other ambitions, life goals, hobbies, dark secrets (other than getting revenge on Bargle).

Ambitions
Aredhel's one glittering ambition is to become a Swordmaster of the Tower, based in her home of Riverspire. Or so she tells herself. She's repeated this resolution to herself so many times that it's become the gospel truth - which is why she's not quite sure why she so breathlessly followed Aleena out of her homeland and into a life of adventure.
When their group disbanded, Aredhel returned to her training with a heavy heart. She willed herself to excel at her training, but something was missing; that light touch of excitement, that uncertainty as to how the day would pan out; the righteous sense of seeking out evil so as to destroy it where it hid.
When the call came to avenge Aleena, Aredhel leaped at the opportunity. Even today she will claim with steadfast loyalty that her sole desire is to become a Swordmaster - but under breath, those paying attention might hear her whisper, but perhaps not just yet.
Hobbies
Aredhel's martial nature and direct manner have proscribed the nature of her hobbies and amusements, such that she's never put time into the traditional elven arts of music and botany. Instead, she delights in sword play and practice, finds peace in cleaning her armor, and more than anything enjoys simply being around other races and people, so that she may witness their mercurial joys and profound sorrows. Her greatest fascination lies with witnessing the sheer variety of the world, in realizing how diverse and manifold its riches are, and she's content to sit at the back of a tavern, chin in hand, and simply watch locals drink and laugh and carouse without feeling any need to join.
Dark Secrets
Aredhel loved Aleena with a quiet passion she never gave voice to. While her own society is relatively open about such relationships, she never dared spoiling her own friendship with Aleena by voicing her attraction. Nor has she dared bring it up to her other companions. Instead, she has buried that love and simultaneously refuses to think about it while using her pain over Aleena's loss to fuel her vendetta. Guarding this secret and denying this aspect of herself has in part fueled her martial fixation and the attraction to discipline and order that forms such an integral part of her life.
Best Quality
Loyalty. Having ventured beyond her home, she assuages her fear of wild unknowns through which she travels by building trust in her companions. In turn, she would give her life for them.
What does she fear?
An eternity filled with meaningless ritual and stultifying solitude. More and more as she travels and adventures she feels that these few years that she's stealing away from her training by adventuring are the only 'real' years she'll get to experience - after which, she'll retire to her post as Swordmaster, and her life - as she enjoys it - will end.
Who does she look up to?
She admires Oso tremendously for his sheer vitality of spirit and the intensity of life that radiates from him. She could never dream of being as he is, but envies him his passions and rages. She admires Mandraiv for his calculating intelligence and cool and patient reason, and Imsh for his caring and empathic nature. She's fond of Artius, seeing him almost as a younger brother.
What offer would be irresistible enough for you to betray your companions?
Having Aleena returned to her.

In all honesty we have travelled much further into, this dungeon then most groups would and that is largely due to the efforts of some of you.
I agree that a change is needed, especially when its the GM suggesting. I've stuck it until now because these games require stickability. Unfortunately my summer is filled with all manner of real life issues and so for that reason I would like to drop out. Losing Paizo access at work has simply made matters worse.
GM BrOp thank you so much for the chance to play with everyone and I wish you all the success with this adventure.
Cheers

Thanks for letting us know, Oso. If you like, feel free to make a closing post to help wrap up your character's involvement in the ongoing storyline.

So here's a bit of a strange question. Do you want to continue using the 5th ed rules, or would you rather switch to Pathfinder?
The reason I ask is because the 5th ed adventure I was writing for a friend of mine will no longer be using the 5th ed system (it's a long story). I'm happy to continue with either system as I no longer have as great a need to "test it out" (other than getting to know it better for my own personal edification).
Any strong opinions either way?

I'm not very good at pathfinder anymore (I haven't played it for quite a while now and never really new the rules very well anyhow). 5E would be my preference as I can remember the rules when I'm posting away from my RPG books (which is nearly every post).
GM BrOp |
No worries, Aredhel. I still consider myself a beginner in this system as well, judging by the amount of time I spend looking up rules.
GM BrOp |
Hi guys,
I feel like I've had to say this a lot lately, but I've been dealing with some personal issues on my end, including a trip to the ER this time. I'm a lot better now, but that kept me out of commission for a while. I apologize for not letting you know sooner.
I also have a Paizo writing assignment due on Monday, so I won't be posting anything new until Tuesday at the earliest.
If you are still interested, we'll continue then.
Best,
BrOp

I'm finally back! Sorry it's taken so long, but I had some medical issues here that have kept me busy, plus the writing assignment on top of that. Nothing life-threatening or debilitating, thank goodness. If everyone is still interested, I could continue.
