Game Master Pirate Rob

13th Giantslayer Map

Greetings!

I am looking for ~4-5 players to join me for Giantslayer using 13th Age.

This is a campaign mode Giantslayer game for pbp game day 5. (Starting ~Monday August 29th). I'll make my decision on who to take by August 20th at the latest. There will be heavy differences from the AP as printed.

What is 13th Age you ask?

It's a streamlined, player driven, high fantasy d20 RPG by Johnathan Tweet (3.0 Player's Handbook, Over The Edge) & Rob Heinsoo (4e lead designer)

Experience with 13th Age is not necessary (a plus though), but a willingness to learn and at least a basic familiarity with any d20 system (such as Pathfinder) should do just fine.

There are a handful of pre-gens available here, you are also welcome to make your own character. All the rules are available via an SRD here. (lvl 2 characters, 28pt buy)

So go ahead and post with your interest, and when you get a chance add some details on character concept/background. (Even the pregens have no stories attached to them and the player will need to provide it.

Here is my previous Adventure Path/13th Age crossover if you want an idea of what the game will be like.

Also you can peek at the discussion thread for some more useful links and an example of character creation.

One last note: I like to run my pbps quite quickly. I expect multiple posts most weekdays. I do occasionally disappear for long-weekends for cons, but always with plenty of warning. I'm working more than I have been recently but I should still manage multiple posts most weekdays.

This will be a fast paced, action packed game and I expect it to run for the entirety of the game day. It is very probable we will not get through all 6 books during the gameday but it is possible.

Thank you for reading.

As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to let me know.

I'm interested in joining as a cleric. I wrote up most of the character sheet on the profile and I'll try to finish it and write a background as soon as possible.

Excited to see you're interested.

I'm guessing from your fast sheet you already have at least some familiarity with 13th Age.

Taking a quick peek at your posting history, you look quite new to the Paizo forums, but also a speedy poster, which makes me unbelievably happy.

Let me know if you have any questions, as a reminder it'll be a few weeks here until we get started to align with the pbp game day.

I've never played it, but I do know the rules (from the SRD). And yes, I only started posting here a short while ago, though I have been signed up for a while longer.

I have no fear of looking stupid! Where do I sign, and how much do I pay you?

Hey Pirate... thinkin' about that half-orc bard I made for your 13th Age Shattered Star recruitment.

Will have to grab her stat block from home, since it looks like I never got it into her profile. I'll do that this evening and see what needs tweaking.

Glad to see some more interest, as always I'm happy to help with any questions you might have.

Can someone put a link up to the SRD or a link to a PDF?

It's in the original post.

LTR Raltus haha

It looks like I never finished creating Bethany. I'll do that this weekend.

Please note, if you have gotten here from the pbpgameday link, this is indeed Giantslayer and not Reign of Winter.

So we have a bard and a cleric. Do we need a standard party makeup for 13th Age?

Not at all, you should make whatever you think you'll have the most fun with.

Some of it depends on what level of complexity you want to take on. I will note that the rogue functions much easier when you have a companion who wants to be in melee. Judging by the
Hrarsk's attribues and domains that's unlikely to be an issue.

There's a nice little mini class guide in the discussion thread and in the book but I'll repost it here for ease.

Classes:

From the simplest character class to the most complex, the
classes go like so:
• The barbarian is designed for the player who wants to roll dice and slay without worrying too much about the rules.
• Like the barbarian, the ranger relies on base attacks augmented by class talents instead of a power list.
• The paladin also relies on a short list of class talents instead of powers. Like the ranger, it can be slightly more complex if you choose its more involved talents.
• The fighter is simple to play but asks you to make interesting choices between flexible attacks before and during combat.
• The cleric is probably the easiest of the spellcasters. It requires a touch of patience.
• The sorcerer is probably more complex than the cleric because of variant spells and the option to cast spells for double the effect in two rounds. Not a decision that new players may feel comfortable with.
• The rogue can be more complex than other classes because you are tracking whether or not you have momentum, constantly disengaging, and trying to use your Sneak Attack damage effectively.
• The bard has a variety of options that include battle cries, spells, and songs. Figuring out how to use these options in combat and during roleplaying is probably best for a confident player.
• The wizard is the most complex class if you choose all the options that allow improvisation and ad-libbing; without those free-form talents, it’s no more difficult than the sorcerer

Hey Rob! Oladon is busily convincing me to take the leap to the 13th Age! I have studied the rules for the length of one bus ride (across the Bay Bridge, so that's something) and I'm thinking I'll go for it.

Based on the complexity order you gave, and a quick read of the races, I'm leaning toward a wood elf ranger, but that might change some as I read on.

Sounds good, we'd be happy to have you Khelreddin. Any questions I'm happy to help answer

Raltus: Are you still around and interested? I'd like to hear a little more about what you're looking for in a pbp. I tried looking at your posting history but it looked like you were just applying for all the pbps in sight. Lemme know.

Hrarsk: Just checking in, I'm happy to have you, we're a little over a week away from getting started to line up with the pbp game day. Just wanted to check that you're still interested and see if you had any questions.

Sczarni

This seems very intriguing and I might see about making room on my PbP plate for it if there is still room.

Kysh: I could probably squeeze you in. :Þ

Take a look at the rules and such, lemme know if you have any questions etc.

Would a Necromancer be a possibility? Or would the summons slow down PbP to much?

No problem with the Necromancer. Having summoned types things around is much less of a problem in pbps than face to face where making your turn take 2 mintues to figure out instead of 1 is a serious problem.

That said, the Necromancer is one of the classes from the 13 True Ways expansion book. I own it, and have read it once. I'm much less familiar with it than the core classes.

You're welcome to play it, just be aware you'll have to figure out more of the details yourself since I'm less familiar.
