Dear website designers,

First of all, congratulations on the new designs, overall I find it to be very clean and easy to navigate once you unlearn the navigation of the old site.

One particular feature of the new design is an absolute show-stopper to me, though: the nigh-indistinguishability of bold-face.

In order to give that some background, I cannot emphasize enough how important a clear bold-face is to the online play crowd. In a typical game, the consensus is that every single line of dialog is put in boldface. On top of that, a lot of GMs, including myself, use trackers to call out players, using boldface item lists. These list are now somewhat ineffective.

I know it is a big ask to change a font after a website design. Given the amount of player complaints I have seen so far, though I would want to bring it to your attention for consideration.

Many thanks and best regards,

Alex (Kludde)

To add a bit of context to Alex's request, it's become apparent that the new site works better with some browsers than others.

Here's what I've experienced. I hope this info helps.

On my Macbook, Chrome (which is my preferred browser) does not show bold text in the forum, but otherwise the site works; yet on Safari, bold text does show up but the menus are borked.

Oddly, on my ancient university windows 7 laptop (that really is nothing more than a client PC) the site and menus appear to be functioning normally under Internet Explorer 11.

(All my browsers are latest version).

Agreed. When I’m in Firefox, I can barely tell regular and from bold text. When I’m in Safari (i.e. my phone), bold works fine, but looks weird when zoomed out.

Grand Lodge

I can still distinguish bold font on my iPad in Chrome, but it does not look as distinctively bold as it once did.

Hmm

The Exchange

Pathfinder LO Special Edition, PF Special Edition Subscriber

Windows 10 Chrome and I can still distinguish. However it is less noticeable as before.

Chrome on windows 10, works fine.

Safari on my iphone, I can tell it's bold but it has weird lines in it that hurt the readability.

What platform are you running Firefox on, and what version? I ask because my Firefox (58, 64-bit) on Win10 renders bold just fine.

Scarab Sages

Chrome on my Android Samsung S6 Edge Pro has very distinguishable bold face.

Windows 10. And.... it seems they've fixed it since I last checked the boards on my computer. Go figure. Well done, Paizo! Good job!

Firefox 58.0.2 shows the bold just fine on a Win10 system

This (link) is what the forums look like for me. Chrome on OSX. It's slightly more pronounced on Firefox (link) and Safari (link), but still faint in my view.

A quick look at the page source & styles doesn't show anything being done for bold other than using the standard tags. That puts the rendering firmly in the hands of the browser.
Looking at those images, it looks like your standard font is heavier than normal, but your bold font is about normal for bold. This could be down to the choice of font for the site (font-family: 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica', 'Arial', sans-serif; if I've found the right bit of style)

Same here Kludde. No bold visible using Chrome in OS 10.11.6. So far been absolutely maddening in all my PbP games.

This looks to be fixed (for Chrome on Mac at least). Thanks!
