Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A new Pathfinder explores the vaults of hidden relics and treasures beneath the Grand Lodge. This is what he signed up to the Society for; access to these relics in order to further his own aims and goals. Ever since he'd left Jalmeray, he'd known that his physical training would help him attain a position that he could exploit for his own furtherance.

A swift glance tells you much about this individual; his musculature is well-defined although not overly bulky and he appears lither than most. His armor is of excellent make, although if you were to scan him with detect magic you would find few magical auras aside from the wayfinder hanging around his neck. Odd, for someone in the Archives. Perhaps the greatest oddity is the presence of a shield, but no discernible weapons about his person.

"Yes?" he asks as he notices your presence. His manner is distant, not callous but certainly as though he isn't used to small talk.

Dark Archive

A Varisian half-elf walks in, grumbling to herself.

In Varisian:
"Finally back after all that time wasted by that idiot Cal. Now to find that tome and pick up where I left off."

Noticing Feshud's attention, the half-elf answers him in Taldane.
"Oh, don't mind me. I'm just here for research."
With that she walks off into the stacks.

Dark Archive

Feshud raises an eyebrow as the half-elf speaks in two languages he doesn't know, before disappearing again.

Vudrani:
"Well, that's an odd one."

Dark Archive

A young woman with dark features, obviously a Chelaxian, wearing a dark robe with strange bone patterns all over it, walks into the area with a skeletal wolf with a few bags slung over it trots along side of her.

She carries a decent sized tome and sees the Vudrani man standing around. She does something which causes the undead beast halt its movement and then turns to the Vudrani. "Greetings Vudrani. You seem a bit lost within the Archives. Is there something I can help you with?" As she speaks in a accented common tongue.

Just a bit funny to me, but Taldane is the original name for Common. Though other nations will only call it common, in spite of its origins. ^_^

Dark Archive

The half-elf from several minutes ago emerges from the stacks with a large tome under her arm, which she takes to a reading table. Once there, she unpacks two notebooks (one of which looks like a repurposed spellbook) and other writing implements before finally cracking open the focus of her study.

Dark Archive

Feshud fixes the woman with a piercing stare, looking her up and down before studying her 'pet' for a moment. His eyes return to her.

"I am not lost," he replies, "Merely giving the place the once over. An interesting companion you have; do you have much trouble with our more liberal brethren?"

Dark Archive

When the Vudrani man replied, she simply nods. "That is good then. There are things within here that can end your life, or worse." She states.

When he comments on the skeletal wolf, she shrugs slightly. "Well, there was one Sarenite that came through here a few times. He said that he would... Redeem it." She sighs. "Honestly, it is an undead creature. Anyway, I simply replied to deal with a plague ogre zombie I have guarding somewhere around here." She gestures around her.

Dark Archive

A pale-skinned human boy, no older than eighteen wanders in. He has a chain shirt and a spiked gauntlet, but no other major items of note. A visible shadowing of the light (not quite enough to drop it a 'light level') seems to follow him around. He has long black hair that falls in front of his eyes, though a few strands are dyed red.

"Whatever, he doesn't understand true darkness. He doesn't get it, no one does." he says in a monotone voice as he tries to unsuccessfully shake the hair from his eyes.

"Whatever, he's probably lame. No one understands me."

He looks over a few books on a nearby shelf half-heartedly.

Dark Archive

Feshud raises an eyebrow at the mention of the zombie.

"It hardly raises my level of faith in our procedures if you are unsure as to where you placed your undead," he replies flatly. "Perhaps an overhaul would be beneficial."

As Janus saunters over, Feshud regards him with mild amusement.

Dark Archive

A convocation of shadows? I love the dark!

A bemused tiefling sporting a set of fine daggers glances about. His eyes slightly smolder as if long removed from the embers of hell.

Dark Archive

Selena waves off the reply. "I mean, it patrols the area. And makes sure nothing leaves here without consent." She states. "We wouldn't want anything in here being let loose upon Absalom. It would be a terrible public relations crisis."

When others walk in, she mentally takes note of each one. Hm, one cloaked in shadows, and a roguish tiefling. Possibly devil blooded. She thinks.

The human gives an off-handed harumph to the tiefling.

"Whatever" he says in a hushed town, as if this was some attempted barb. "You don't know what real darkness is about. You don't truly understand, no one does. Except for me."

Again, he tries to shake the hair from his eyes in a half-hearted sway of his head, which only succeeds for the briefest of moments.

Dark Archive

A teenage girl wanders in, her long, bright red hair flowing behind her, and her bright green eyes wide with wonder as she looks around. Her bright clothing and cheery smile just seem out of place in the Dark Archive.

Following right behind her, a rabbit with exactly the same color of bright red hair hops along, its nose twitching as it sniffs in every direction.

"Oh, so this is the archive where all the powerful magic is kept!" she says, looking around in wonder in every direction. She seems almost too excited to be here.

She looks at the others in the room, as if noticing them for the first time, then begins speaking to them. "Paracountess Dralneen wouldn't let me come in here until I finished my training to become a field agent. I haven't been on any missions yet, but I've been studying the arcane arts, and I hope to learn a lot being here", she tells them enthusiastically.

"But where are my manners? My name's Zoë Saugin, and this cutey widdle bunny wabbit", she picks up the rabbit, and scratches him behind the ears, "is Aleph."

She looks at the others for a moment longer, then continues, "So I thought it was called the Dark Archive because the arcane arts are sometimes called the 'dark' arts. I didn't expect everyone here to be so gloomy and serious... and physically dark." She looks at "Bloodangel" when she says that last part. "Is the name more of a reflection of the members?"

"Psha, run home to the Silver Crusade, 'cuse you don't get it. It's called the dark archive because there evil artifacts here, which is kinda alright, I guess. I mean, if you're into that sort of thing. Children's stuff mostly, but like, they could hurt some normal people. No one here understands true darkness, but at least dark archivists are a bit more with it then the sheeple in the rest of the society. Whatever." Penderghast leans against a bookshelf and tries to pull off the 'too cool for school' look.

Dark Archive

Selena eyes the girl that wanders into the archives. Who is this? Oh! Another Arcane Practitioner. Hm, she's a witch... I wonder what she knows. Though maybe a bit too excited for this line of work. She wonders about the red head.

She runs a hand over her robe before greeting Zoe. "Greetings Miss Saugin, and... Aleph." She glances her eyes towards the gloomy man before cotinuing. "Not often does it reflect the members. But it references the dangerous artifacts we have within these halls." She gestures to a area behind her, where there are a couple loud footsteps before going quiet again.

Selena smiles ever so slightly when she turns back to the redhead. "It is nice to see more practitioners of the arcane. May I ask if you follow Nethys?" She pulls out a symbol of the god. "The reason why I ask, is that you sound like you're awfully excited about magic."

Dark Archive

"Yes, I want to learn whatever I can about the arcane. I think Nethys has blessed me with a quick mind to be able to study and learn things easily, and maybe he's the one that sent Aleph to guide my magic."

"And I came here to study the dangerous stuff. That's the point. How will I defend against it if I don't know how it works?"

Dark Archive

The Chelaxian woman clearly smiles with the redhead responds. Ah, such an interesting girl. So enthusiastic, so useful. She looks to the skeletal canine beside her. "Well, in addition to that dangerous stuff, there are also guardians we have within as well. Best get used to undead and outsiders as soon as you can." She smirks and does a quick gesture.

The skeleton shrugs off the bags that were upon it and trots slowly up to the redhead and sits in front of, and stares at her with its empty eye sockets. Selena continues to smile. "Case in point, my pet here. A skeleton wolf. It can still trip like it's living counterpart, but it has the sturdiness of a skeleton. Unless it is hit with a blunt weapon."

Dark Archive

"Oh! That is... interesting."

She's clearly taken aback, and clutches her nervous bunny closer to her. She doesn't step back from the skeleton, though it's obvious that was her initial reaction, and she's just struggling to maintain her composure.

Just to be clear Mare has 3 definitions

1. Equine Female
2. Dark spot on the moon (or planet)
3. Inducer of Nightmares

I expect mother chose 3, but if it was 1 perhaps having a name that inspired conflict would be a convoluted gift indeed

Swirls of shadow surround the man as he steps away from the bookshelf, a rumbling from an indiscernible place makes itself known as it gets louder and louder, and those within 20 feet of the kinetisist begin to feel strange fluctuations in their weight and the weight of things around them. This ends abruptly when the kinetisist launches a blast of black energy which lands on the floor five feet from the wolf, clearly damaging the floor with blunt force trauma alone

"Yeah, it's really hard to come by bludgeoning damage." he replies snidely before resuming leaning on the bookshelf.

The half-elf studying in the corner raises a hand and introduces herself. She doesn't look up from the tome or her notebooks.

"Cathran Casrua. Welcome to the Archive."

Cathran's head whips up and she leans protectively over the reading table.

"Hey! Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to pull a stunt like that in here?!"
She finally notices all the people that came in since she sat down and runs an appraising eye over them. Something about Zoë seems to catch her approval. She sends another angry glare at Janus before returning to her work.

Dark Archive

A whipcord lean, but obviously muscular man with a polearm of some type enters the room at a run. He slides gracefully to a stop and looks piercingly around. Those who spend time in the Dark Archives or who practice with the Swords are likely familiar with the Seeker, Marcellus.

perception: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (4) + 27 = 31

He takes in those present, the flesh-impaired wolf, and the fresh damage to the floor. Gauging those present, he still asks, "Did one of the artifacts or documents activate? Is anyone hurt here?"

What you might notice:
He looks Chelish by descent. Though armed, Marcellus wears no armor. He has a spell-component pouch on his belt.

** spoiler omitted **

Cathran just points at Janus with one hand while turning the page with the other.

Dark Archive

"Not the artifacts. Just one of our members showing off."

Zoë makes use of the distraction to distance herself from the skeletal creature and approach the newcomer.

"Hi, I'm Zoë, and this is Aleph. We're new to the Dark Archives. Is it always this weird around here?"

"Psh, yeah, might be dangerous if you don't truly understand darkness. But I do, so, like, whatever. So lame."

Dark Archive

Marcellus notes the indication made by Cathran as he looks over the area, and studies Janus for a moment. He turns his glance away to Zoe, and gives a quick glance to Aleph.

"Yes." He nods in assent. "It is often weird around here. You may have heard of the flooding not too long ago? It comes with the territory. Though, for something over a century now, all of Golarion has been 'weird'. Different areas in different ways. Even many would say someone with a familiar is 'weird'." As if timed for it, a small arachnid comes from under Marcellus' shirt and focuses on Zoe, as if studying her.

"Anyways..." he continues, "I'm Marcellus. It's one of my self-assigned duties to look after things here. You'll find some helpful types around."

Dark Archive

"Marcellus is good people. My mentor Dr. Phil Moore Love and his mentor Meri Doc both speak well of you."

The tiefling notices his hand has strayed into a light beam and shifts position to avoid it.

"My own time in the Darkive is limited. I expect it will be gathering rather than reading."

Dark Archive

Selena looks towards the shattered tile and sighs. "I am not cleaning, nor paying for that."

She recalls the skeletal canine to her side and begins to load it back up with various bags before pulling out a thick tome and resting it onto a nearby table.

She looks up and notices Seeker Marcellus arrive and Selena seems to become somewhat shy. "Ah, um, Greetings Seeker Marcellus. I-it is nice to greet you again." She keeps a sentence going through her head. Don't call him Thrune. Don't Call him Thrune. She takes a deep breath to regain herself and looks around the room. She nods in agreement with the tiefling 'Night Mare'. "Yes. There are many here that are willing to help. And I am quite sure that Sir- Er, Seeker Marcellus is one of the more helpful ones."

Cathran mutters something to herself.

Perception DC 5, in Varisian:
"Whatever, don't come crying to me when you piss off one of the artifacts and it tries to eat you."

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Zoë lets out a sound like a cough, and then covers her mouth quickly, as if trying to stop from laughing out loud.

Yes, she's fluent in Varisian.

Dark Archive

Feshud had waited silently, observing the ongoings of the Archive.

"Well, while this visit has been... enlightening, I'm afraid I must depart for my next venture," he says while heading for the door.

Dark Archive

Selena raises an eyebrow when she listens to Cathran's retort, and Zoe's reaction.

Linguistics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14 ...Really? Sheesh. I think that might get the gist of it. Maybe. Though she at least knows it was in Varisian.

She frowns slightly as she barely gets what was said in Varisian. But then smirks slightly as she opens the thick tome she placed onto the table. If I got that correctly, I think I prefer that then other things. She thinks while going through her spellbook.

When the Vudrani mentions he is heading out, Selena can't help but to speak up. "Be careful out there. There are many dangerous and weird things that most likely want to consume a part of you."

Dark Archive

Cathran closes the tome with a sigh.

In Varisian:
"Well, that was a waste of time. It seemed so promising, too."

She packs up her things and returns the heavy book to its proper place.

Dark Archive

Neither a linguistics student nor a conversational Varisian speaker, the tiefling stares off at his shadow playing amongst the tomes.

Dark Archive

Aleph the rabbit jumps out of Zoë's arms and runs for the door.

"Oh! Aleph is right. We shouldn't stay too long. Venture-Captain Valsin told us to meet at the docks later today for my first mission, away from Absalom. I should be going."

"Goodbye, everyone. It was nice meeting you all."

She doesn't seem so sure about that last part.

Technically, she already had the mission - GM credit from running The Consortium Compact last weekend. At least now, she'll have some real equipment to bring to her first actual mission.

Dark Archive

Bolt walks in eating a loaf of fresh bread from the bakery, a sack of books held over his shoulder. Taldoran in face, he gave off a coy smile under his tricorn hat.

"Am I missing something."

"May Desna smile on your journey."

When the Taldan enters, Cathran takes immediate notice of his sack of books.
"Oh, is that a donation to the Archives? You wouldn't need any help sorting it, would you?"
Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Sense Motive DC 11:
She really wants a look at those books.

Dark Archive

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

Selena raises an eyebrow as she looks up to the new comer and then looks towards the Half-Elven woman. [i]She really wishes to see what books he brought. Hm. I think I am slightly curious as well.[/ooc]

Turning back to the man, she greets him with a nod. "Greetings. Er." She looks around the archive room before returning back to him. "Ah, just some debate about philosophy and whether or not one could reliably have a weapon for just the right time." She clasps her hands in front of her, turning her attention to the sack of books. "So, are those books to be turned in for review? If you'd place them on a table, I am sure one of us will be happy to go through them for you."

Dark Archive

"Yea, some tomes and what not from an expedition that need deciphering. They were going to go into the Overflow, but I swooped in on 'em before that could happen. Names Bolt by the way, Jaune Bolt," he says greeting the two. He swing the sack of books around to give to her.

"Think there is a minor ward on the bag to prevent any possible curses or what not attached to them from suddenly going off."

Dark Archive

She rubs her hands together before receiving the sack of books. Selena is caught a bit off guard by the weight, but manages to place the sack on a nearby table. Looking towards the sack then to Mr Bolt, She nods. "Thank you for notifying us about the ward, and the possibility of curses upon these books."

She bows her head slightly. "My name is Selena Malicdor. Of the- Erm..." She sighs. "I have to remind myself not to get into that whole spiel. Too many around here are a bit too touchy about family subjects."

Looking back to the sack, she nods. "This should be fun. I have a decent understanding of Linguistics." She reaches for the opening before pausing, her hands slightly away from the opening. Wait... I should be careful.

She quickly incants a spell and commands something to hold the opening of the sack up. She then casts a following spell which opens the sack.

Spellcraft 16:

Selena has cast Unseen Servant, then cast Open/Close on the sack.

Dark Archive

spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

Marcellus frowns a bit from his position by the wall. He holds his polearm at the ready for something ... strange to come bursting forth. He remains quiet, however, letting the Necromancer perform her task without interruption.

Dark Archive

A human of average height hoisting a crate above his head with ease walks by. The crate is marked, "Cursed, useful object" in bright red letters.

He pauses to examine the arrayed Darkive members, slides the crate into the deposit slot and ambles over.

Dark Archive

Selena steps closer to the sack and looks within without touching it. Nodding, she steps back and commands the invisible force. "Alright then. Remove each tome from the sack, and place them gently onto the table in a neat row." She points to the sack, then to the table as she commands it.

And invisible force moves the tomes, one after another, and places them neatly upon the table. Once the last one is place, she lets out a sigh of relief. Well, looks like everything worked out properly. Now lets see what we have. She looks towards the Varisian Half-elf that was interested in the tomes as well. "Care to examine these with me?" As she gestures to the tomes.

Dark Archive

"But of course. I'm always eager to aid my fellows."

Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Sense Motive DC 11:
Eager is a bit of an exaggeration. She mostly just wants a look at the books.

Before she can begin her perusal, however, a messenger comes down the stairs, hands Cathran a letter, and leaves.

"Oh, what now?" she says with obvious exasperation.

After reading the letter, she gives a last, covetous glance at the uncatalogued tomes before letting out a sigh.

"Looks like I'm on duty. I need to go get some cold-weather gear. May Desna smile upon you all."

Dark Archive

"Well," he bows almost in a joking way, "the pleasure is all mine. I do say there seemed to be one on old Varasian magics and Summoning techniques. Very interesting."

Dark Archive

Shayd picks up a book opens and closes it. Takes a few practice swings (one and two handed).. shrugs and walks back the way he came.

Dark Archive

Looking to Shayd with a raised brow, "Umm, can I help you sir?"

Dark Archive

I was examining the books as directed. A metal bound tome might be useful in my future repo missions. I think a two handed swing could be especially effective.

Dark Archive

Cathran returns, talking to herself as she enters.

In Varisian:
"Now that that nonsense is done with, let's see if those books have been sorted yet."

She rubs her hands in delight when she sees the stack of tomes.

"So, do you still require assistance cataloging these?"
