Advice on protecting familiar in combat

Advice

What are good magical items to help protecting familiar in combat, specifically from 1 attack of opportunity it will get while disengaging an enemy after delivering touch spell. Except magic armor, i mean.
Its a Lyrakien (so flying humanoid).

I know that best advice is to not let your familiar into combat in the first place. Cloak of elvenkind does not give enough to its poor acro to make a difference in the avoiding AoO.

Maybe somethign that grants concealment? Best thing i can do is cast greater darkness on it, but 90% of creatures have darkvision anyway.

I know there are spells that instant teleport your familiar if damaged.
But honestly, if it's gonna be delivering touch attacks against enemies, you might either want to get Improved Familiar or cash out some gold on items for it.

I edited the post, it is indeed Improved Familiar.

Technically, she'll provoke just entering the opponents space to deliver the attack. She's tiny, with a reach of 0.

If you've got summons or a team going, ask them to provoke the AOOs before the familiar goes. Not full proof, but it can help.

Rod of Reach spell and Vanish to give it invisibility after the touch. This method would take two rounds (one to cast the touch spell, and a second to allow the familiar to deliver and get invis cast on it - time it faster and you'll end up not only eating the AOOs but also possibly a full attack)

Cast long-arm on it to give it reach (would at least not force it to occupy the opponents square).

I don't think there's a guaranteed good way to do it; high risk, high reward?

Provoking AoO before is a nice idea, there is actually a wolf with Mobility in the team...

Spell

This is the only spell I know.
Otherwise, you can always Shield it, that's +4 AC, Mage Armor, that's another +4.

That would put it at 24 without Natural Armor Bonus. Or Improved Invisibility, would help too if enemy relies on sight.

On the other hand, you can give it reach.

Long Arm

With this spell no more AoO.

I am afraid it will be "corpse teleports instead" im my case XD

Recalled one thing i found before - Nightmare Boots from Ultimate Equipment. 50% concealment can help, i guess.

improved invisibility works, but you should probably be casting it on your melee guy instead of your familiar.

High ranks in Acrobatics helps with the AoO, and don't forget fighting defensively and everything else you can do to get an AC bonus for the AoO to miss.

Grand Lodge

Darting Duplicate

Not sure what class you're playing, but this is a fun little spell that lets you draw the AoO and only costs a swift action to cast.

I'm quite fond of the Alchemal Discovery Tumor Familiar. Whenever you are anticipating combat, absorb the familiar into your body. It can't be targeted anymore.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Duplicate Familiar and send in the spare instead.

Blur is an awesome spell. And it is one of my favorite buffs.

The spell Illusion of Calm on a wand might do.

The feat Evolved Companion can give the Reach evolution to allow it to attack without entering the space.
