prestige classes and skill ranks

Advice

my buddy is looking at a prestige class(shadow dancer). He is wondering it requires stealth 5

does that mean minimum lvl 5 or if he gets the bonus from skill focus or class skill that he can go into the prestige class before lvl 5.

I used to have the same confusion, but from reading a bunch of things scattered around(*) I figured out that the skill requirement actually means required ranks in skill, and if they were going to require a certain level of accomplishment in skill not tied to rank they would specify something like {whatever_skill} +X.

(*)I figured this out from information scattered around in various places, with no convenient single place to link to.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's ranks, and you have to have that before going into it, so earliest is taking it as your 6th level

after i posted i looked at the character sheet closely and noticed its rank +temp+.... = total which means total is different then rank so he needs to be lvl 6.
i just wish it was written out in the books a bit better

Skill ranks one of the most reliable ways for the developers to limit classes/feats/etc to a minimum level. Most other metrics have ways of being bypassed, or can vary by character.

Most Prestige classes don't let you get in before 6th level without some kind of shenanigans, since they're supposed to represent accomplishment and often a reputation with certain organizations.

I wonder why they couldn't just write "Character Level 6" as one of the prerequisites?

And the tricks for early entry have been removed by the recent SLA FAQ nerf (which reverses an only slightly earlier ruling that allowed them in the first place).

Yeah, I wasn't sure if there were other early-entry tricks out there, but that one's closed - though it only effected a few, relatively weak PrC's anyway.

Character level would probably preclude monsters with class levels or something, though they possibly could've used hit dice.

Eh.
