PM me if you are interested or need a writing group for your fiction. :)

We have an informal deadline of Thursday to have an outline. I repeat informal if you want to bounce some words around PM me, there's still 90some days left! :)

And sent the last one! Now all I have left to do is cross my fingers!

I've been running Emerald Spire recently, and I've been trying to fluff out the area around the Spire and Fort Inevitable. At some point, it occurred to me that I was working on River Kingdoms content. ^_^

Would it be inappropriate to submit content tied to the Emerald Spire Superdungeon? Might be NPCs (Weal & Woe or otherwise), might be info on local barbarian tribes or hobgoblin forces, might be interesting threats.

Any of this sound interesting?

The Emerald Spire Superdungeon is on the Community Use Approved Prodcut List.

Fair game.

Thank you!

More general questions, to my fellow writers:

Does this sound interesting or useful to people?

Are any of you thinking along similar lines? If so, feel free to let me know - coordinating on such work might be interesting.

Hi, Brian.

Yes, the deadline is still the same. Good luck!

Sorry if these are stupid questions... I'm new to the idea of submitting to the Wayfinder magazine and just wanted to be clear.

1) If I submit something (and I'm lucky enough to get it picked up), I can't do anything else with it, right (in terms of adapting it and turning it into something for sale)?

2) If I submit something and it doesn't get picked up, I can take what I wrote and do whatever I wish with it, right? (Like rewriting it to exclude Golarion specific references and publishing it as part of a 3PP product.)

Welcome! And no, these aren't stupid questions. I'm not as eloquent as Tim or Paris, but I can take a stab at these:

Yeah, you can. You still retain copyright to your submission (or your art, if an artist). However, if you submit your article/art to another publisher (or publish it yourself), you can't prohibit Wayfinder from continuing to distribute the article in the existing PDF or print editions.

Yep, as long as strip out/rewrite any Paizo-specific intellectual property.

I hope you decide to submit. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick response, Ambrosia Slaad!

I'm really excited to hear I can still do something with it if it gets picked up. I understand Wayfinder still can too, but it's nice that it isn't exclusively Wayfinder content if it gets picked up. I'm even more excited now! Submission on its way!

Of course, I doubt my first try will be a success, but natural 20's happen sometimes, right?

My first time (Wayfinder #14), one of my submissions was accepted.

Hi, All!

Our favorite Slaad has it mostly right.

Basically, the way it works is that you retain the rights to your art and writing work published in Wayfinder. You can publish them on your own website or allow others to publish them. (They're even free to pay you for that work, if they wish.) HOWEVER, you are giving Wayfinder (and Paizo Fans United) to use that work in the issue of Wayfinder in which it is published and any future publications we may put out. As such, other publishers cannot use your work in a way that prevents us from using it at all. (It's a nuance, but AS's post mentioned only the current issue of Wayfinder, while our rights extend a little beyond that.)

For articles that don't make it in, you are absolutely free to do whatever you wish with that material. That said, whatever you do with it has to conform to the requirements of the OGL (and the Pathfinder Compatibility License, if it applies). If you keep any Pathfinder Campaign Setting information in your work, your use of that material must conform to the Community Use Policy, just as Wayfinder does. If you're going to be doing anything with the PFRPG rules or setting, it's important to familiarize yourself with the requirement for both of those.

I hope that helps!

Paris

Thanks, Paris! Always good to know all the details. My submission is in and I look forward to seeing what becomes of it.

On my first try submitting, I got everything I submitted into the issue (#14). (Mostly. Two articles ended up being merged into one, but I think that still counts.) Don't count yourself out! :-)

Hmm, I'm thinking a weal/woe this time...not sure what else...

Thanks, Meraki! (And yes, I think it counts.) I just see so many people submitting (or planning to submit) this time I feel like I don't stand a chance. But my entry is submitted and I won't know unless I try, right?

And hey, either way I got write something that may or may not turn into something else later!

When do we get notified if our submission is picked up? I know it will be after the deadline, which isn't until the end of December, but are we talking early January or...?
Just curious. (First timer here)

By the way, for anyone doubting the good work that Wayfinder does...

On the strength of my recent Wayfinder submissions, I was asked to write for the upcoming Aethera Campaign Setting (currently on Kickstarter). If you're thinking about submitting something to Wayfinder, do it. You never know where it could take you.^_^

Hi, Kelly. Great question. Glad to know you're interested in submitting!

The amount of time between the closing of the call for submissions and the notification of authors whose articles were accepted depends on two key factors: the number of submissions we receive and the level of "real life" chaos that Tim and I have going on around that time. Our goal is to have all articles read and selected within a couple of weeks after the deadline. Since our odd-numbered issues of Wayfinder are printed for free distribution at PaizoCon, we have a solid deadline that we have to meet. Because of that, we usually focus on making sure selected articles are handed out to our editors before we notify the authors about acceptance.

We understand folks are curious and anxious to know if they were selected, so we don't like dragging things out, but life does happen. As we frequently point out (hopefully not too frequently), our Wayfinder staff is made up entirely of volunteers. Unfortunately, job and family responsibilities have to come before Wayfinder.

For Wayfinder #14, the call for submissions closed on 30 June and we posted the list of accepted authors on August 1st. I think that a typical timeline for us, so if you don't hear anything from us about Wayfinder #15 by February 1st, no one will fault you for pinging us. :)

Thanks, Paris! Very helpful. And I totally understand real life taking precedence. No-one can fault anyone for that. :)

My submission is in (hopefully you got it.... do you confirm by email that you get submissions?), so I'll sit tight until February.

Again, real life got in the way....yes, I did receive your submission. Do we usually confirm receipt? No usually, because I would be doing that 100+ times. However, if the submission politely asks for it, I usually pop a quick reply.

We really do try and be as interactive as possible. Our priority is to our families, our paying jobs, and then to keeping the issue on track and on schedule. If we have the time to do extra, then that's great.

I vaguely recall that for the first few years, the only notification I got that an article had made it into the issue was when I got the issue and saw my name in the index of articles.

I get that we live in the future now, where everyone is on MyFace or whatever, and gets instantaneous mass feedback from 20,000 'friends' whenever they Tweet their latest thought/meal/thing their cat did, but Wayfinder's a free product, a labor of love. Speaking for myself only, *I* don't need to know whether I got in or not (although the editors have been doing a great job of making contact these last few issues!), and my appreciation for the fanzine or excitement to read it will not be lessened by my name not being in it.

Indeed, if I don't come up with a less deadly dull article than the submission I'm sitting on, this issue might be such a one. :)

Indeed, that was how it worked early on. But, when I took over at #5, I really wanted to be responsive and let people know with acceptance/rejecting letters, so that they'd know. That was easier when we only got 50 submissions, often from only 20 people. I think I only managed to pull that off once or twice before it took too much time away from actually doing the zine.

Now....it is way more work than we have time for. Alerting those that made it in is sort of a precursor to the editing process, plus we need authors to agree to terms and conditions for using their submission. But....it still is quite a bit of effort. And we appreciate everyone's patience, for sure!

Well now I feel like a jerk for asking.... just trying to getg an idea of how it all works. (*looks sheepish and properly chastised*)

And that's why I didn't quote you, in my comment, so as to not seem like I was playing the internet bully or threadcop or singling you out (since your question would have been asked, probably sooner than later, by someone else). It's not my place to chastise anyone, and I just wanted to stress to *everyone* (self included) to have some patience and not expect the sort of immediate feedback that this world of social media has primed us to expect.

That said, I'm as much a victim of that, and cannot for the life of me imagine how I used to play Play-By-Mail games, in which a single 'turn' of the game could take a month to cycle around. Yeesh. Half the people I play with don't even the patience to wait for their turn to come around the table these days, before they are playing some other game or texting on their phones. :)

Oh, shoot. I just realized that the deadline here matches the end of NaNoWriMo. Probably should have submitted something before.

Oh, well. Maybe I'll find time towards the end of the month, or maybe I'll wait til the next issue.

Hey, KC. NaNoWriMo ends in November. The deadline for Wayfinder #15 is the end of December. You've got a whole month after writing your novel to get something together for WF! :)

Would some Kingdom building meta be out of theme? I have dabbled in it in another AP (Wrath of the Righteous) and learned alot while also home ruled a fair bit but if I talk about this can I mention Ultimate Rulership or not? I know it isn't Paizo. I want to do a much more in depth look at terraforming and some mythic magical stuff.

My other thoughts where about that ghostly river town and make some traits or a feat for interacting with it.

A little over a month to go until the call for submissions closes. I will definitely start shouting about it once we hit December!

We always welcome Kingdom Building articles. You can absolutely reference Ultimate Rulership, and we will list it in the OGL section.

Ghostly river town sounds good too!

And then you'll get buried under them around Christmas...

The Exchange

Well, there I was just tinkering with some ideas for submission. Then my computer hard drive croaks and I lose everything.

But you know what, it's good! I can now try again, and the added pressure might actually stimulate me to bang something down and send it in.

(But the expense for fixing the computer? Bad, very bad...)

Sorry to hear about your computer. :/

Good luck putting your submissions back together, though.

Following the topic of 'what can I do with my article, afterwards?', a few of us were approached after WF10, and asked if we would allow our articles to be translated into Original D&D (and Portugese), for a Brazilian fanzine.

And we agreed, as long as all the requisite OGL legal disclaimers were included.
So it does happen.

And a couple of early articles have become official PF canon, but I can't remember which.

Silver Crusade Contributor

I believe something Crystal Frasier wrote in one of the early issues was used for Inner Sea Gods - that's where the zonzon doll of forgiveness comes from, if I recall.

Sovereign Court PaizoCon Founder, Wayfinder Editor-in-Chief

UPDATE!!!

As of right now, we have 17 submissions in TOTAL.

We also have 28 days remaining until the end of the Call for Submissions.

We obviously need more submissions to make this issue an actual magazine and not a pamphlet, so distill those ideas into words, and submit by the end of December, OK?

Some Wayfinder content was canon when published or later canonized by Paizo. For example:

Canon fiction by Elaine Cunningham and Dave Gross was published in Wayfinder #4.
Crystal Frasier's description of the Crystalhue holiday and Zonzon dolls from Wayfinder #2 was canonized in Inner Sea Gods.
Lissa Guillet's Dawnflower dervish of Sarenrae base class from Wayfinder #1 was canonized as a bard archetype in Inner Sea Magic.
The einherjar, a creature template from Wayfinder #6, was canonized as a standalone creature in Bestiary 4.
The nycar from Wayfinder #6 was canonized in Bestiary 4.

Looking through Bestiary 5, I would add the storm hag to that?

Silver Crusade Contributor

Does the storm hag originate in Wayfinder?

It predates Bestiary 5 for sure - it's in Book 6 of Reign of Winter. Check my article. ^_^

As for submissions, I know pH unbalanced has something in mind - I should talk to her about that.

I had an idea for a Weal and Woe, but I'm not sure if it's what you want...

It's a changeling spiritualist with the haunted archetype (the Weal) and the phantom of her hag mother (the Woe). She acts as a wandering fortune-teller and faith healer.

I had considered posting the breakdown of those 17 by category, but frankly, we need more of ALL types.

One thing we are commonly short on each issue? Gazetteer articles. Taking that spot on a map or that one sentence mention of a place in the Inner Sea Guide, and expanding it into a full write up. I love that, and I don't think people send enough of those anymore. The River Kingdoms is FULL of that stuff.

Regretfully nope. Storm hag I wrote for Wayfinder is different from official Paizo storm hag that appeared later in one of AP's Bestiaries and (I assume) is the one in Bestiary 5...
