True Primitive Archetype Ban

Pathfinder Society

I was looking at the additional resources page and noticed that the True Primitive archetype has been banned in PFS. I've been trying to find where it was said it was banned, and also how characters who already have levels in True Primitive are handled.

If you have levels in True Primitive, are you grandfathered into the campaign and allowed to keep your archetype?

Do you have to retrain to a basic barbarian?

This was probably discussed or mentioned somewhere already, but I have been searching and can't find it.

Here is a discussion of the banning

I believe that when an archetype is removed from the campaign you are supposed to rebuild the character.

I suspect you can take a different archetype for free, but cannot change classes, abilities, etc.

I might be wrong about all of this. The best I could find was several posters (mostly VCs) who said "it's covered in the guide." I read the guide, and this isn't specifically covered, but it seems a reasonable extrapolation of what is covered in the guide.

That kind of makes me sad.

One of my players was already on the fence about Society play. Her only character is a True Primitive Barbarian (the one I mentioned in the thread linked by DesolateHarmony).

But I guess my thoughts on the matter were already voiced there.

What shall we ban next?

Hammers. I think we should ban hammers.

Sorry, Nefreet. Just trying to cheer you up.

Oh dear erhmm....'whistles' Not as intended, sorry my friend.

This ban took me completely by surprise because I was 100% convinced this archetype was illegal from the very start.

I have no idea how I came to that conclusion.

I can understand the ban. The archetype doesn't make a lot of sense for being a member of the Pathfinder Society, but I had a lot of fun putting ranks in Profession (Scribe) and Linguistics, making my picture books and trying to figure out how angry words looked.

Oh well. I guess someone (Probably Kreighton Shaine, he hates picture books) is going to strap him into a chair and force him to learn how to read.

How are they supposed to read the memo telling them they've been fired?

We just went in and fixed the glitch, so they won't be receiving a paycheck.

The rest will work itself out. See if they can read between those lines.

You were probably thinking of the Feral Child Druid, which is also banned.

In other news, Absolom today is mourning the deaths of fifteen singing telegram performers....

I also thought it was banned, as a point has been made that all Pathfinder Society characters need to be able to speak Common. This was brought up when Feral Child was banned and also as the reason the alternate Dwarven Racial Trait Xenophobic is not allowed.

Nothing prevents a True Primitive from speaking Common.

Darn, I liked the restricted equipment list. Those are so rare.

I would think the rebuild rules posted in the old blog banning several archetypes would still be the ones that apply:

Mike Brock wrote:

With that said, I understand the time investment and care put into a character’s background and the planning that goes along with making sure the character fits exactly how you envision him. If you have a character affected by the changes above, I am offering a rebuild along the following guidelines:

  • You may rebuild any class levels affected, to levels of other classes as necessary. (For example, if you have a 10th-level character with one level of rogue and nine levels of the synthesist summoner archetype, you may rebuild the nine summoner levels into any other class or another summoner archetype).
  • You may retrain any feats that directly apply to the changes above as necessary.
  • You may sell affected equipment for the full price paid when you purchased them (as listed on past Chronicle sheets).

I am saddened by this because Mike Brock actually DMed for my True Primitive.

Ben Dan will never be the same.
