Investigator & Alchemist Multiclass

Rules Questions

If, for whatever insane reason, you multiclass in Alchemist and Investigator, would your effective Alchemist level be your total Character Level for determining Alchemist levels for available Discoveries, or would you only be able to take the higher of the two Class Levels?

Your effective alchemist level would be your alchemist level.

If you mean extract level, it would be the higher of the two based on: While a character can multiclass with these parent classes, this usually results in redundant abilities. Such abilities don’t stack unless specified. Well, they don't stack at least, but they should overlap as it says nothing about that. So a level 4 Alcehmist/4 investigator has a 4th level formula level, possibly twice.

Now the poison ability overlaps as well, but having resist poison +2 twice is still only a total bonus of +2. Yikes!

If you mean extract level...

I'm referring to my Alchemist level, not Extracts. The reason I ask is because of this:

"Alchemist Discovery (Ex): The investigator can select one of the following alchemist discoveries as an investigator talent: combine extracts, concentrate poison, dilution, elixir of life, enhance potion, eternal potion, extend potion, infusion, mutagenUM, and poison conversionUC. When selecting an alchemist discovery, he must be high enough level to qualify for that discovery, using his investigator level as his alchemist level to determine if he qualifies. This talent can be selected multiple times; each time grants a new alchemist discovery.

If you were an Alc5/Inv5, it seems like you would just count as Alc5/Alc5, but I didn't know if there was precedent for you counting as Alc10 from other similar multiclass builds (from archetypes, etc.)

That's a good question. I believe your effective alchemist level is still 5 based on RAW. I could see a GM allowing it to be 10 (I don't think its OP in the least) but I'm almost positive its not RAW.

Related to this topic. If you have Investigator 5 / Alchemist 3, do you have two different "caster" levels for your extracts (5 and 3) or just one (5)?

Two different ones.

The Exchange

I understand at int 18, level 1 investigator, level 1 alchemist only get 1+1 + 1+1 extracts per day.

Right now I am assuming that extracts/spells learned from the investigator extract/spell list on are shared with the known spells of the alchemist. That is if I learned CLW from investigator, I don't need to learn the alchemist way of concocting the CLW elixir/spell too?

Maybe the question is this, is the formula book for these two classes cross compatible? One book or two.

Can the discoveries taken by one class (investigator) be used by the Class(alchemist)?

The rules are quite specific the abilities do not stack unless specified, and the section on discoveries does not state it stacks. What you end up with is two different alchemist levels for discoveries.
