Nothing said it but real world dynamics... a man with a broken glass bottle will not have the same reach as say a man with a ladder.
he would effectively, since there's nothing stopping him from attacking stuff right next to him, like the pointing end of a long spear would.
basically, nothing says a weapon has the reach quality if it's long enough, natural reach is based on the characters size. so nothing says in the rules you gain reach, you can ask your GM though if he will be willing to allow you to gain some improvised weapon with the reach quality.
in fact reach weapons that the monk of the empty hand uses, are treated as quarter staffs which do not have reach, so... you know... pathfinder physics.

Guess what? This game doesn't care about real world physics or dynamics. It has elves and fireball.
So unless a rule says "you gain reach with an improvised weapon" then there is absolutely no improvised reach weapon.

RAW doesn't cover any of this. By the rules, you're out of luck. Reality and the rules often don't see eye to eye.
IMO I think some improvised weapons should gain other abilities. For instance, a length of chain would be better at tipping than a plank of wood so adding TRIP makes sense. Same with a 10' pole and reach. So ask your DM if he'll allow it as a house rule.
