Background:

Elsa Harcatha was born to a minor noble clan in the ice cloaked land of Irrisen. From birth she was different from her peers, her powers seemed different, more primal. On her 12th name day she realized her sorcerous potential and fearing she would be put to death by her ultraconservative fellow nobles she fled south into the Grungir forest. Here against all odds and probably with the help of some higher power she survived for the weeks it took her to find a small gnomish village named Delmon's Glen. She lived with the gnomes of Delmon's Glen until her recent 18th nameday when several gnomes were found dead in the forest, frozen with slivers of ice in their hearts. She knew this was a sign that the Ice Witches had caught up to her. Her adoptive mother the druidess Bavakanka
Winterlisp escorted her to the coast and paid a galley from the Linnorm Kings to take Elsa south into Varisia where she hoped the warmer climes would keep Elsa safe from the wrath of the Winter Witches.

Niles, looks 'çool'.
But you forgot you get a bonus feat pick from:

*Blend with the crowd: When in a "busy" crowd, you get a +2 to stealth for hiding amongst the masses.
*Native to Varisia: You get a +2 to Kn. Local in Varisian settlements.

Grint's background:
The Mavric family is long known for its strong warriors, able fighters and ranking offciers among the Korvosan guard and military. Grint as the eldest son of his father is no exception, though he is still very young and has much to prove.

Grint excelled in the archery part of his basic soldier training back in Korvosa, he could easily swing any weapon, but his best feature was his sight and his almost unerring shots at twenty paces (around 100 feet) from the mark.

After his initial training, the Korvosan Guard wanted to groom him into an officer for their archer divisions, but his father intervened.
The Mavric family has a long standing tradition that military men and women should head out of Korvosa, see the world, hone their skills and make a name for themselves before coming back.
To put it in his father's words as a former mercenary: "Go out there and enjoy yourself Grint, see what's what, gather some fame then come back when you're satisfied. This bureaucratic cesspool of a city will still be here when you get back."

His father had arranged a caravan to other outskirts of Varisia to take Grint with them, Grint serving as a new scout on horseback for them.
The caravan life consisted mostly of going ahead of the caravan, scouting for any sort of trouble, then seek a solution for it, either by word or by sword.
The young lad of the Mavric family quickly learned that a good eye and speed made a good scout, after all that was why they were on horseback. Though not used to riding himself, he quickly got the hang of it, he had to though, else they would leave him at the next stop and seek a replacement.

That mentality carried through in Grint's thoughts and social life amongst the members of the caravan; Duty before leisure. Grint didn't want to get sent away and did everything he could to do be the best scout he could be. Cleaning his weapons, waxing his bow, keeping every part of his gear in top shape, even keeping guard when he didn't have to.

Although archery and scouting is his life now, Grint is growing tired of it. The festivities in the city of Kharum, a center of trade he passed by many times, is giving him an opportunity for a welcome break and later join a different caravan heading another direction. For now it's a time for him to recharge and relax.
Though he is troubled by the fact he sees several of his old companions and colleagues nod off or get drunk along the days of festivity. Grint can't help but think of keeping watch over the people here; after all somebody should do it, why not him?

Personality:
Grint Mavric is someone that seems distant, mostly because he puts his job and duty before almost anything else, which makes him not that much of a chatty person.
Discussing tactics and approaches to problems are more of his kind of topic in which he will eagerly participate.

I adapted Lyssa's stats so she doesn't have a 7 before applying racial modifiers. With racial modifiers her lowest stat is now a 6 for Charisma, but besides Charisma nothing else falls below 10. Might do some more tinkering, but I'm currently happy with how the stats are.

Still working on a background, etc.

Lyssa, your stats are incorrect. Humans don't give a penalty to ability scores when taking dual talent. So your char is still 8.

Is this still open? I've been meaning to play a PbP game. Thinking about making a wild rager if so.

Open untill fri 18th 24:00 GMT+1.

Though, a wildrager archetype in the middle of a busy city? If fighting starts they, according to description, "can't tell friend fom foe." Which seems risky with so many people in public during the day.

Only if he chooses to rage, which is something he has been avoiding his entire life due to.. Back story!

Backstory!:

The pain woke him, followed swiftly by the smell and taste of blood. Ivan slowly came to and assessed his surroundings.
Self assessment: injured, evidently self inflicted as he noticed his hand still grasping the ax lodged in his thigh. Slowly pulling it free, he contemplated the events that lead to his current situation.
Thoughts after the rage came slow, like pulling a log through thick mud. Logs... yes he had been working outside the city of Kharum as a logger, seeking an honest life cutting trees. Just then he noticed the other bodies around him.
Two males, still wearing the wolf headed masks of Malar, and a woman and child. Isadelle and Bella. The widow had been kind enough to rent him her spare room in her cottage. Ivan stopped himself from checking their wounds, best not to know who had done what. Nonetheless their faces brought clarity to his hazy mind. He had returned to the cottage yesterday evening after a day of logging, to find the malarites had tracked him. Tracked him right to innocent Isadelle and her child.

Seeing their wolf-faced masks reminded him of his childhood, of living among them. Those of the clan knew not their parents, they only knew the pack they were born to. From an early age the elders knew something was special about him. He borne the mark of a claw upon his chest, a blessing from their bestial master. A blessing that was the rage. Ivan recalls the first time the rage had consumed him. He remembered the cacophony of voices in his skull, screaming for blood and death, for destruction and consumption. His voice of resistance was but a whisper, and it too was destroyed and consumed.
When he came to, the boys who had been picking on him as well as the boy defending him lay dead at his feet, his bloody hands still wrapped around their throat. Oh how the clan rejoiced, a boy blessed by the god they served, one whose animal instincts had the power to control him. Ivan has horrified, he was host to a monster, a rage so consuming it threatened even his life. He fled the clan, wandering for years seeking a peaceful life, yet always pursued by the followers of Malar, seeking to reclaim their lost prophet.

Ivan stood, wincing at the pain in his thigh. He needed to get moving, soon more malarites or wardens would arrive, with questions he had no answers to. Saying a quick prayer for Isadelle and her child, he silently rebuked himself for getting so attached, had he not perhaps the Malarites threat on their lives would not have caused him to lose control. He would go to the city. The malarites wouldn't dare track him into such a well guarded and populated area.
Turning away from the bodies behind him, Ivan hoped that his thinking was correct, for everyone's sake.

Let me know what you think GM Chyro!

EDIT: I know Malar isn't a PF god, but I can't find a suitable god of the hunt / bestial god. Let me know if that is a problem.

You can find deities in categories, for your convenience, but no i don't really mind. Gorum comes to mind though, being a god of battle. Barbarians are among his worshippers.

If you don't mind then I will keep it as Malar, for character advancement purposes :)

And hopefully I explained the wild rager in the city to your satisfaction.

I'm working up a Varisian harrow-deck fortune teller, a young woman who travelled with her family and inherited her mother's harrow deck when she was killed by a drunk Chelaxian. She has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about Chelaxians, but also knows that she has to be able to live around them in the modern world. Has been trying to make a living as a fortune teller and a scam artist, but really wants to do more in the world. (Mechanically, a bard.)

It's the 16th guys. :)

@ rknop, how's your varisian coming along?

Update on the completed subs list.

Varisian is mostly done. I'll get her posted today. I'm suspecting I'm going to wish that this book came out two months earlier once it comes out....

I submit Malena Omoroi, Varisian Fortune-Teller and Bard, for consideration for the game. If accepted into the game, I will create a message board alias for this character.

Crunch Summary:

Malena Omoroi
F Human (Varisian) Bard/1
Str: 10 Dex: 13 Con: 10 Int: 14 Wis: 14 Cha: 17

Full character sheet and character portrait here

Description and Personality:

A medium height, slim, young Varisian woman. She generally dresses in traditional Varisian garb, hammed up a little bit for the tourists she seeks to earn a living from by telling their fortune from with her inherited Harrow deck. Her features are sharp, her eyes bright, and her hair long and black. She often wears it in a long braid that either hangs down her back, or (when that starts to bug her) is tied into a knot at the back of her head.

In personality, she's naturally mischevious, curious, and tries to maintain an air of mystery about her (in keeping with her trade as a fortune teller). At the moment, she doesn't have a single grand goal in life, but like many of the young has several conflicting grand goals. (She's going to be a Sczarni boss, she's going to be a ship captain of her own merchant ship, she's going to be the most famous entertainer in all of Varisia, she's going to become world-renowned as a collector of arcane lore, she's going to pass the Test of the Starstone, etc.) Given that she doesn't have a specific direction in life, she gets through day by day as an entertainer and a fortune teller, living off of the traffic of people coming through the port city, and sometimes trying to deflect the unwanted advances of sailors who think she might be another kind of entertainer.

Recent tragedy in her life has cast a cloud over her. While in public, she maintains the performance of the spirited Varisian woman full of life, privately she struggles with maintaining the will to get out of bed and earn her daily bread.

Background:

Malena's family comes from a long, storied line of Varisians. Some of her cousins are members of the Sczarni, although her immediate family never was. Her parents were part of a merchant caravan, and she grew up with the merchant life. Her mother was always a very mystic woman, carrying on with the airs of a harrowed fortune teller. Malena's mother introduced her into the mysteries of the Harrow, teaching her how to read the Harrow Deck... and how to carry on the showmanship that customers demanded just as much as the reading itself. On Malena's 16th birthday, her mother gave her the Harrow deck she had herself inherited from her own mother.

Later that year, both of her parents were killed. Half a day's travel outside of Magnimar, a group of Chelish thugs who fancied themselves part-time Hellknights confronted her caravan, accusing them of being "Sczarni scum", and of stealing jewels from a Chelaxian noblewoman in Magnimar. It wasn't true, but the thugs didn't care; they just were out for the laughs, and for the blood, and for pretending to be Hellknights. They killed most of the caravan; Malena survived by hiding.

A month later, she got her revenge by making sure that actual Hellknights in Magnimar knew that there were thugs out there taking their name in vain. Although the Hellknights had little respect for Varisian merchant caravans, they would not tolerate bandits and murderers pretending to be of their order. The thugs who killed her parents were brought to justice.

Malena tried to move on. She moved to Kharum, thinking she might one day move to Riddleport. However, she found that she was able to make a living in Kharum, performing music in taverns and putting on airs as a fortune teller. She's starting to come to think of the place as home.

Looks cool rknop. A local this time. :)

GM Chyro wrote:

*No sweat Wolfgang.

*Bolgrim, how do you have +5 to craft?

I'd like to add, please no min-maxing. No stats below 8 before racial modifiers.
A question asked: Can we take leadership later?
-No.

Talented Blacksmith +1

Rank +1
Class Skill +3

EDIT: Whoops, just realized, I forgot to do the -1 for Int

EDIT: Fixed

There is a "lady"/"young woman" working at one of the stalls in the market place of Kharum.

Sabel: "Purify your food here! Come here to cleanse your food and drinks!"

On the other side a skeleton in suit and top-hat, named Hank, is handing out flyers for the stand.

"click clatter clatter click?" The skeleton hands someone a folder "Clatter Clatter!"

It is a very quiet day today with very few costumers. She has only cleansed 2 meals from the kebab stand next to hers, which isn't surprising at all considering there is more fly then meat being sold there.

I wish life could be more exciting once in a while

She whispers something softly and waves her hand over the third kebab being brought. The flies disappear and the meat takes on a healthy color, as far as half burnt meat can take any color.
She closes down for the day hoping the next might bring an exciting adventure upon her path.

Grint is reporting in, with a finished alias.

Ready to rock and roll if chosen.

Cool, another local.
The skeleton servant is funny, though it's an unusual choice, undead assisting a shopkeeper in public. Several religions have their church in Kharum, there's bound to be Pharasmans in the city. :)

Is raising the dead an evil act?

IMHO, it is about 95% of the time. There are "white necromancers" who do not use undead for evil purposes.

ANIMATE DEAD
School necromancy [evil]; Level cleric 3, sorcerer/wizard 4
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (an onyx gem worth at least 25 gp per Hit Die of the undead)
Range touch
Targets one or more corpses touched
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no

The evil descriptor makes it an evil act yes?

Yes, insofar as any good aligned cleric or person cannot cast the spell. Neutral characters technically can, but it is frowned upon by literally every good aligned PC.

It's not an evil act i can assure you :) It's the revelation spell of an oracle:

Raise the Dead (Su): As a standard action, you can summon a single skeleton or zombie to serve you. The undead creature has a number of Hit Dice equal to your oracle level. It remains for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier. At 7th level, you can summon a bloody skeleton or fast zombie. At 15th level, you can summon an advanced skeleton or zombie. You can use this ability once per day plus one additional time per day at 10th level.

And yes it would only have been for half a minute of flyering but good marketing is very expensive. ^^

Btimmy wrote:

The act might not, but the impression on the public remains the same though. Even if you're not a necromancer by class, people will look upon you with caution, since you're the master of an undead.

That indeed might be true. The only real purpose of the summon is for major fights, since Sabel is fairly bad at melee and better at range. I wanted to give the intro a bit of fun, but that might not have been the best idea :(

The idea was fine. We're not playing the story yet, are we? So it's just a funny and flavorful recruitment post.

Lyssa's browsing the wares of a stall close the kebab stall when she notices the purify stall. When Lyssa walks over to see what's going on she notices the skeleton. She takes one of the folders it's handing out. "Thank you, mister skeleton."

Purify your food... Huh, so there's bad food being sold?

With a quick glance at the kebab stall Lyssa understands the situation.

I see... that person's poisoning others...

Lyssa walks up to the kebab stall, taking out a piece of soap and her waterskin. "You!" she yells at the person selling the poisonous kebab, "You're selling poisonous food, and by doing so you damage the population of this fair town! That is against the law! I command you to stop commiting this crime, and repent for your sins by washing your mouth with soap!"

After forcing the kebab vendor to wash his mouth with soap, a process Lyssa enjoys with the most evil grin imaginable, Lyssa commands the kebab vendor to leave. "Irori has witnessed how you repented for your sin against the law. Now leave, and better your life."

"You, what's your name?" Lyssa asks the woman in the purify stall, "My name's Lyssa Kail. You did a favor to all who bought poisoned food. I thank you for that, and Irori smiles upon you."

I finished Lyssa's background, etc. I also updated Lyssa's stats so Dual Talent is applied properly, and I switched a trait and skill to better reflect Lyssa's background. (Some training in Knowledge (Local), because Lyssa likes laws so much.)

Here is my paladin if it's not too late. (Void Dragon).

You still have your human bonus feat Xarian. The haggler is a free bonus feat. ;)
Any personality or appearance description?

He dropped the bonus feat and skilled for dual talent which allowed him to have a 16 charisma. Appearance and personality are soon to follow.

Thank you for the comment :)

"Thank you my name is Sabel Ae'tari." Next she said with an apologetic smile "And you might put me out of business by doing that."

Sabel invites Lyssa over to the shop with a beckoning hand.

"Here i'll do this one time for free." She said while pointing at the plate on the stall. "I like people who do their best for other people."

This is Wolfgang's 80% complete and extremely late character, if you aren't accepting anymore entries I completely understand, I'll go about finishing the few missing sections in the character sheet now.

Good luck everyone!

Ok, it wasn't easy choosing with colorful backgrounds and all.
Here's the picks.

Grint Mavric
Jadwiga Elsa Harcatha
Lyssa Kail
Malena Omoroi
Sabel Ea'tari

The discussion is attached for you to dot in. I'll write a short intro a bit later tonight, you can rp away at the gameplay until sunday evening. Due to a concert (Yay) it'll be likely be between 22:00 and 23:00.

To the others; thank you for the submissions. You guys have colorful backgrounds and i hope they'll get into another campaign.

Darn, I really liked this game idea. Oh well, better luck next time. Congratulations to everybody that made it, fun gaming!

I am hereby re-opening recruitment for 1 character.

Sadly we've lost our bard which i'm botting through an encounter.

I post daily, twice if the pace keeps up, possibly more keep combat going.
The party started with average gold and have hit lvl 2 1 day ago (ingame). So max start gold for the replacement, since the party is walking on their initial stuff as it is.

The current party:
Mobile fighter (ranged)
Oracle
Sorceress
Monk

Setup on creation

Spoiler:

-20pt buy
-1 feat
-2 traits, no drawbacks.
-Average class start wealth
-Classes: Core and Base, with exception from Gunslinger, ninja, samurai and summoner.
Archetypes allowed, but none that are leaning to evil.
-Races: Core, though gnomes aren't native to Varisia.
-Alignment: Good and neutrals. Non-chaotic
-Level at 2, lvl gain goes after events.
-Hp max on lvl 1. On gain, half +1 or roll.
-No min maxing, 1 stat allowed at 8.

No 3rd party content.
RP is encouraged, creativity can get you a long way.
I'm looking at a 1 post minimum a day, preferably 2 if you want to pace it up.

Your character can choose 1 of the following bonus feats:
*Haggler: When selling weapons or armor in Kharum, get 105% of it selling value if passing Bluff or Diplomacy DC13. 100% Otherwise. You must haggle alone without aid.
*Blend with the crowd: When in a "busy" crowd, you get a +2 to stealth for hiding amongst the masses.
*Native to Varisia: You get a +2 to Kn. Local in Varisian settlements.

I'd like to introduce the character over the weekend, so recruitment till friday July the 11th GM+1 (24:00) and introduction Sunday July the 13th.
Picking will be between me and my current players.

Have a look at gameplay to get a feel of the story thusfar.

Grand Lodge

I'm interested. This is my PFS Bard, I would love to us him as the base and just make some minor tweaks. I love being the guy who helps the other players get ALL the glory. I look to buff and try to provide a laugh. Let me know if I can move on to the 2nd interview for this position, and anything you need from me or my character.

What would the you and the party like to see for a class GM Chyro? I could make anything, though, but before I start making something I want to know what has the best chance of being accepted.

As one of the players (the Mobile Fighter) I'd say we know our weaknesses atm, I'd say someone who could use DD properly would be highly appreciated.
That's mostly because we are now searching for keys and what not to open doors and chests.

Also I would prefer another male PC, but that's just because I'm the only male on four females. I want someone to share the load with.

^
^
^
(Has unofficially been dubbed packmule by the women)

As Grint suggested someone with some utility skills.
We have 1 pure melee and Grint is a secondary if needed.

Very well, I have a character that I will reset to 1st level and reuse. The character is a Bard Archaeologist with DD. Originally, though, the gender was female. Just pointing this out. I will make a background in my spare time at work today, and then make the crunch this evening when I return home and have access to Hero Lab. The background will be the most fun.

You can still keep her female if you want, having another male character isn't obligatory, just a hope of Grint himself.

Vixen, your char starts at lvl 2.

Don't forget (like many of the 1st applicants) you get one of the custom bonus feats.

Ooh, level 2. I will keep these things in mind. GM Chyro, do you have any particular plot threads you want me to keep in mind while making the background? Or just use what info you have currently available?

No plots to tie you down to.
2 players had even picked to be stand holders.

You are visiting the city during/or because of the annual 3 day festival for your own reason. It's currently midday of the 3rd day.

My 1st post in the gameplay gives some introductions to the city itself.

I had seen the original post, though I just wanted to be sure. I will make a sufficient reason to be at the festival. In a city this large it will not be difficult at all.

I am opening this up to the players. One of my 1st level spells may be chosen by all of you. Once selected, please get back to me as soon as is reasonable and I will add it to my spell list. The other selection I will pick something suited to the bard's role.

Grand Lodge

I guess Vixen is in? Bummer. If another opportunity rises, please pm me. Thank you.
