Oracle Revelations and Multiclassing

Rules Questions

I am currently playing a 5th leve Battle Mystery Oracle and am planning on multiclassing into Mystery Cultist when I reach 9th level.

My question is this:

Many of my Revelations grant additional abilities when I reach specific levels, such as Weapon Mastery granting me Greater Weapon Focus when I reach 12th level. I am wondering if that means 12 total character levels or if it means 12 oracle levels. Other classes specifically state you need "X" number of class levels to gain the ability, but these do not.

What do you folks think?

Thanks for your time.

Whenever a class feature mentions levels, by default they refer to levels in the class granting the feature. Levels in classes other than oracle do not improve an oracle's revelation class feature even if they improve the oracle's spellcasting ability (such as most of a mystery cultist's levels).

blahpers is correct. The general rule is that whenever an ability refers to level it is referring to class level, not character level. Unless something references character level specifically, it is not talking about your total level.

Just to add to the above. Read every entry in a class as if no other class in the game exists unless the class area refers to that class. It doesnt matter f it talks about class level or level or ranger level its all hte same thing.

the exception is character level, which is not used alot in class entries (that im aware of)

There is some Prestige Classes that use Character levels and combine abilities from other classes, such as Sneak Die for Rogues. It just doesn't happen very often and is usually specifically mentioned and clearly indicated when it does.

Your Oracle Curse would continue to advance, though, since that is specifically called out as doing so.

If anybody is curious about the official language on the presumption of single-class characters, it's in this FAQ.

Class entries in the Core Rulebook are written assuming that your character is single-classed (not multiclassed).

As Nefreet noted, the Curse ability specifically references how it progresses if you have levels from other classes. Since the Mysteries entries don't mention progressing with other class levels, they don't.

Correct, though it progresses more slowly for non-oracle levels/hit dice.

I wonder why some class features specifically mention levels in that class while others only mention levels? That is what confuse me. Everything you guys mentioned sounds reasonable.

Because the design team/writers/editors are human and lacks perfect consistency. And that's okay. : D

Cool. Well, thanks everyone for your thoughts.
