PbP GameDay 2: PFS 5-05 The Elven Entanglement (7-11)

Recruitment

A Pathfinder Society Scenarios for levels 7–11.

Nearly every nation has contributed to the Mendevian Crusade, but few are willing to send additional aid to assist the Pathfinder Society directly. Owed a favor the elves cannot refuse, Pathfinders travel to Kyonin to secure a force of some of the finest demon-hunters in Avistan only to find that the hunters are missing in action. Can the Pathfinders extract the lost elves from the depths of Tanglebriar, or will they become the latest casualties of Treerazer’s domain?

This scenario will be run as part of the Pathfinder PBP Game Day 2: A Hymn of Wind and Fire event. Boons will be available, as is the norm for conventions.

The game play thread will open on April 5th, 2014, and we must finish by July 5th 2014.

Please only sign up if you are fairly certain you will be able to post at least once every 24 hours (it's okay if stuff comes up, but please make a best effort to be attentive).

The Exchange

Sahar Hasna
9783-2
Human Barbarian 2/Witch 6

Scarab Sages

If you still need fresh blood, I'd love to play!

Balik Ulfenssen
#1904-5
Human Monk (wanderer) 4/ Witch 3
Also, slightly mad. But only slightly.

Silver Crusade

I hate to see a game fail to get off the ground, but here's my story. I had everything all set to go in anther game so this character would be free on April 19th and the game would start after (it was already a delayed start).

Well, someone realized that ComicCon was the same weekend as the PFS event. So that event is now on May 10th. It's all season 5 stuff. The only scenarios I haven't played are the high-tier ones, since my top two characters just barely got into level range for them.

In my experience, a PBP can run in 4-5 weeks if everyone is posting at around twice a day during the week or somewhat on weekends. Should we all be able to commit to that kind of schedule, I be quite interested in this game. If not, no worries. I certainly don't want to force my schedule on others.

Osric Longstride
#85794-1
Human Ranger 8

I'm committed to keeping things moving but I can't make any guarantees on making a deadline. This is a fairly combat-heavy scenario with a couple opportunities for RP. We can skip the optional encounter to help cut down on time.

With you three we're looking at 7-8 with the four-player adjustment and a pregen. I'd give you the choice of your pregen and let you decide if you want to control it by committee or have me play it.

If any of you are uncomfortable playing with three players, I'll understand if you wish to back out. Of course there's still a few days before we have to make that call.

I don't have a character available in tier to add to the game...but if you're in a pinch I'd be happy to play a pre-gen; with the caveat that this scenario has a reputation for being somewhat deadly and pre-gens have a reputation as being "less than optimized." 8-)

But I'd hate to see this game not happen...so I'll run whatever pregen will round out the party if that works for folks.

Grand Lodge

Tempted to jump in so this can go off. I have a 7.2 Bard (Archaeologist) that Osric had adventured with. My only real issue is that I have GMs this and know how deadly it can be. Super tempted. Let me ponder it for an hour or two.

Scarab Sages

Ha! I'm less than optimized! I should be a pre-gen!

...

What's a pregen?

I can post multiple times per day and at least once per day on weekends.

Plenty of time to ponder (well, two days).

I've played this before, and it can indeed be quite deadly. From reading the GM forum discussion, I've found that some of that deadliness can be ameliorated with careful application of the written tactics and avoiding certain assumptions (such as surprise rounds for NPCs where they shouldn't get one).

It also helps for the PCs to be prepared for the kinds of things you tend to encounter in high-level play.

A word about my GM-style, for those still deciding: I play things as close to RAW as I can and I don't fudge rolls. I will adjust tactics to scale to the power and skill level of the group, but for higher level play I try not to softball players. I am not, however, out for blood, and I am very much against antagonistic GMing.

I've found that PbP can be disadvantageous to players (bonuses get missed, turns get skipped), so if we get in a situation where someone's near death, I'll slow things down to make sure they have the best chance of pulling through.

---

A pregen is a pre-generated character. They're built at levels 1, 4, and 7 and are decidedly mediocre (although I've found that level 7 Amiri and Kyra can still be pretty helpful to a party).

Scarab Sages

I know. But Balik's a little insane. And also a fictional character; the idea of there being multiple identical copies of people walking around your world would be terrifying, wouldn't it?

The Exchange

Just being honest here, but I'm unlikely to want to play something which is described as deadly with a self-proclaimed under optimized build and 2 pregens.

Not that Sahar is the most uber-optimized by any means...

Silver Crusade

I've played the 7th level Amiri pregen, and she can hold her own. Just don't get a pregen into a 10-11 game!

Osric IS optimized to a degree for demon hunting. Evil outsiders are his +4 favored enemy, and with a little buffing goes from a glass cannon to a titanium railgun against them. That said, his to-hit should probably be 1 or 2 points higher and he still has no reliable way to fly outside a potion (no celestial armor).

I was going to play him in The Waking Rune until my schedule got jacked up. So I'm ready to give him a real challenge. But not one that is ridiculous.

As far as schedule goes, I'm in. I have two level 7+ guys committed. Oneof them is bound to be done by the 10th. If not, I'll try to work into other games or *gasp* play a pregen at the convention!

EDIT: I remember Flinders very well! That heroism spell is awfully nice. I can also pick up some seeking arrows via my custom order boon. They work wonders against mirror image...

Silver Crusade

Obviously we haven't had any new bites in a day. What's your feeling on the status of this one GM? And the other players, too? Is everyone still in? Would we have 4, or be willing to run with a pregen (or more if we get a player to steer)?

Scarab Sages

I think I should back out if it's going to be a combat heavy fest. Balik is definitely not optimized.

Probably a smart idea not to go forward. Having run this, I think we'd need someone more damage heavy. My PC is mainly support, so I think we would be relying on Osric and Sahar.

*I think if there were a heavy hitter fighter type and a dedicated healer, it'd be fine, but as is....kinda scary.

**I think Osric is ideally suited for this scenario and having played with Sahar before, I think she would be fine. Obviously, I don't know anything of Balik's build, but having played my monk/sorcerer in some high tier stuff...he was fun at lower levels, but at higher levels, his weakness are really exacerbated.

Silver Crusade

Yeah, it seems that way to me too. Osric can do well if he's got someone to hide behind. And help out with damage.

I just played him in my first ever 7-11 game. We had a paladin, two rangers, and an oracle. But he combats really weren't too bad (it was from Season 3). And I rolled 3 crits in one game, which we all know is not to be relied upon!

If we had a full table of six, with just one or two dedicated front-liners, we'd be much better off. So I'll back out too, that way there's no worries about keeping Osric free for his upcoming event. He's signed up for 2 Season 5 games there, so I should get plenty of chances to shoot demons! (Or at least a T-Rex, if one game's cover is accurate. That's what I call Big Game!)

Based on the uncertainty, I think it's best to cancel. I do encourage you all to play the scenario sometime.

Just be careful ;).
