Healing with auto combat

Advice

Hey all I'm currently using a Inquisitor (ranged) and honestly I'm putting out the most damage atm. 1D8+6 with rapid shot (divine favor and weapon of awe) It's gotten to the point where I have to make a call between doing good damage or healing a player that does less (I am the main healer atm) Party consists of a magus, ranger, monk and rogue but the rogue seems to just use his crossbow without sneak attacking, the monk is running around provoking attacks so he can make opp attacks and so far the magus just isnt impressive damage wise. The ranger is the only one doing almost the same damage. Anyways that said I'm thinking about going with a cleric for more heals but I'm trying to figure a way so i can heal but still impact the combat. So maybe go with a focus on summonings or maybe go the mystic theurge route? Currently playing kingmaker lvl 4 with no magic items atm

Buy a Wand of CLW. Kill Enemies. Heal in-between encounters.

You'll never be able to heal more damage than the enemy deals. So in-combat healing is usually not very good. (Except for Paladins and their sweet Lay on Hands ability). Kill the enemies before they can do additional damage, use the resting time to put that want of CLW to work.

Thats the main idea but I'm finding out that I'm coming up with having to hold up on combat to bring someone up from the dead. I'm really thinking the gm is trying to kill us soo the thought of switching it up some

if the monk is provoking AoOs then let him take them and drink a potion on his own time. Down the baddy then, if he isn't dead, use a want on him. With a party of 5 baddies should not have time to put out much hurt unless some of their builds are a joke.

Hate to say it but I did a double take when the rogue rolled 1 damage for his turn. (crossbow) The magus seems to be the one always getting to 0 or very close and as i said I really havent seen that massive of damage (best I think was 8 damage to 2 opponents) The gm meanwhile keeps throwing these 3 rangers at us (with pets) last fight they were rapid shooting us (1D8+3 and something like +9 hit) not to mention their wolves had armor (19 ac) plus a druid was flying above with a ac of like 24 (we are lvl 4) It was a ridiculus fight and the only way we survived was because he threw 4 lvl 5 npcs (that he had rolled up) in to save us. Seriously almost tempted to leave the party at this point.

it sounds more like a DM problem than a player problem, to me.

He's throwing encounters that are way off the APL at you guys, then rushing in with his own backups to save you. Its like a game with himself, you're just spectators

I'd sit down with him and talk about it like adults, ask if he'd be willing to let you guys be heroes, but throw easier encounters at you that doesnt need his backup

Well, in his defense, one bad encounter is not enough to mark him as a bad DM. Balancing encounters can be difficult to learn, and only experience will teach him how to do that well.

If this happens too often, you should really talk to him about encounter building.

Remind him that a CR 6 creature is not a challenge for a 6th level character, it's a challenge for a party of 4 6th level challenges. It's a mistake I've seen many inexperienced GMs make.

Sad thing is he is a experienced gm (we are all in late to early 30s) When he pulled out the rapid shot I even made a point of saying that is a bit rough but he still went with it. Just as Weables said, I felt like a spectator at that point.

Well to be fair, if the other party members aren't pulling their weight even a normal encounter is going to be rough and drag on. 3 rangers and a druid should have been rough, but not a death sentence. Team work and using your abilities to their fullest helps, and it doesn't sound like either of those are happening.

Quick Channel (UM p154) allows you to channel energy as a move action but costs two channels. This would allow you to heal AND use a standard action in a single turn.

Other options: spells such as obscuring mist will nearly halt combat if used correctly. You can start healing your allies under the cover of the mist and then drop the mist (standard action).

Regarding the GM overwhelming you. Not all combats should be stand up and fight combats. For example, the Kingmaker AP is known for producing casualties because it is easy to get into an area that you should not be in.

Use obscuring Mist when you are over your head. 1st level spell that prevents targets from seeing you if they are 10feet away. Great thing, you can still use channel energy on your allies.

Fog cloud also rocks since you can drop that on the enemies.

Example of how I would have handled such a combat (with a cleric):
Move action to heal everyone (burns 2 channels). Then use a standard action to cast a spell that slows down the combat significantly.

Yeah I agree Gauss if I was using a cleric I might have had more options but atm I'm using a inquisitor (which is why I'm thinking about changing) Quick channel is really cool! I agree Skylancer I could see running into this but we were heading back to Oleg's place and it was under attack by these guys. I voiced a comment by email to the gm asking if maybe our party should leave the lands and head west :P

Silver Crusade

Having run kingmaker to 8th lvl thus far, that's got to be a home-brewed encounter and unbalanced for your levels. I'd surmise a CR8 or 9, which should be lethal for 4th level PCs. Anyways, beyond this unbalanced encounter, folks should be playing smart enough that healing in combat should be a rarer event than it seems to be now. As noted, a rogue crossbow wielder isn't going to help much, and since a good offense beats a good healing defense, things need to adjust. Went through a similar learning curve with a new player in our group who tried the ranged rogue and wasn't contributing to combat.

Also, no magic items at 4th? Ouch.

Yeah he had 4 lvl 5 npc come in and save us Flame cleric, 2 alchemists and a fire wizard. Honestly my old gm voice was screaming Noooo! Well I'm hoping the email might help...that or I'll get booted from the party.
