Battling Karzoug


Rise of the Runelords


I'd love to know a little about how this final encounter went down. Things like how long the fight lasted, how tough Karzoug really is as an opponent, etc. So far, I haven't found much like that in this thread.

My group's about to start AP # 5, so the end is in sight!


My story is here to be read. Battle tok bit over ten rounds and was hard and fun to play. Only bad thing was that cleric of the group fell too early so he just watched other playing the game. So don't let cleric fall first if he is only one that can heal.

The fight lasted about 12 rounds. I had changed up a couple things in the campaign so

I added the Seven swords of sin and allowed them to partially awake all the swords except for greed since the champion has that one. I also established through their study in the library under Jorgenfist that the Runelords never battled each other, rather they had their champions battle for them. There also was never a recorded time where the Runelords fought either their champions or other champions. Thus setting up that they couldn't use the swords on Karzoug. That made the first few melee rounds crazy as three melee characters had those sword and two didn't have a suitable backup weapon!

Two people also had the Sihedron Amulet at the end so I had Karzoug listen in and pick his spells to use against their planning, plus both characters were spellcaster so I made them make concentration checks for every spell since Karzoug could talk through them and mess up their casting.

The battle went something like this.

Karzoug cast quickened maze on the storm giant (One of the players lost his character by a destruction spell in the fight against the Lamia Harridans so I let him play one of the giants freed from a slain Rune Giant for this fight), then Timestop with a couple spells including forcecage and silence inside the cage to trap the cleric, but reflex was made. Giant immediately made his save for maze and drank a potion of fly the next round and after an additional round made it to Karzoug. Before that happened the rest of the party had to move out of silence and get flying spells cast. Karzoug cast Wail of the banshee and killed only one character, who was saved by the cleric with Breath of life, then a heal.

Karzoug started to get cornered by meelee so he cast dimension door then quickened a repulsion spell. Only the Giant and cleric made the save to be able to move towards him. The giant hit him hard so Karzoug wished for another maze to cast on the giant. Then used another wish for a heal spell the next round.

One of the casters cast dimension door to the main fighter one round, then cast it the next round at Karzoug to let the fighter hit him. The giant took two round this time to get out of the maze.

At this point the heavy spells were cast and it was just a matter of time. The Giant and the fighter were close to being dead at the end but both had lived.


My story. We wiped. 1st action was a quickened wail of the banshee that one shotted half of the party including the cleric, the magus and the archer. gg.
